I have no idea who Urkel is but his trope has rather low wiks and inbounds for as old as it is.

The Urkel found in: 148 articles, excluding discussions.

This title has brought 72 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.

That's not all that many.

If this is ever used correctly, I'm not finding it. Even the work pages are about the trope namer.

Well, I can attest to quite a few of the examples on the page I recognized to be accurate. While I am still rather surprised you don't know Urkel it's an Amero-centric thing so I cannot fault you for it,I mean I'm still ashamed for attempting to say that The Münchausen was an unknown term that would never pass the "Name That Trope" game.

So let's say we do rename it in an attempt to help it, what do you propose we call it? Nerd In Denial? Nerd Thinks Hes Cool? Cool Geek?

I am American. I still have no idea who this guy is and while the page may be right, it's not working off the page and it's not getting inbounds. It needs a serious rename.

What differentiates this from Casanova Wannabe? Is it a subtrope?

[up]It does look like a subtrope - Wannabe Casanova Geek, as it were.

[up][up]I only recognized the name as belong to a baron - have never heard of his work before(though that might not be the first time I visited that page, which just makes it a doubly crappy name).

My understanding of the trope is that he's the usual Hollywood nerd package but without the shyness/social inadequacy that usually plagues them and seems to actively go out of their way to be the life of the party. The Casanova Wannabe segment is mere part of that whole "Nerd trying to live it up" package.

Firstly, I've never heard of this guy and I'm an American.

Secondly, given that virtually every wick shown in the OP is a sinkhole to the Trope Namer, I have to ask whether this is a real trope at all or not.

Considering the sheer amount of X Just X on the on page examples, I'm really not sure.

I'm American, and I've never really heard of him either.

Something along the lines of Nerd In Denial sounds good, should the page be kept.

To be honest, I think a large reason for the low amount of wicks is because this is a very uncommon trope.

People haven't heard of Urkel? Honestly, I couldn't tell you what show he was from, but I definitely recognize him even if I never watched the show. Anyway, the name seems to obviously be hurting the trope even apart from that. I suggest a new name like Oblivious Nerd.

I'm pretty sure it is a trope. The hyper-extroverted nerd. And it's not necessarily being in denial; the trope namer was more just oblivious.

Howard from Big Bang Theory is probably another example. He knows he's a nerd, but chooses to ignore the fact and try to act like he's cool, in the hopes that he'll eventually fool someone — preferably someone female. In his case, it probably is denial.

I admit that it helps to have some familiarity with the trope namer to grok this the way it's currently written.

A character-named with widespread usage for the Trope Namer instead of the trope is more or less a short-circuit for renaming. Character-named tropes are not good.

I've seen Family Matters, and I still couldn't guess this trope. As usual with character-named tropes, the character has many traits other than the one that defines the trope.

Nerd In Denial is very nice.

[up][up]did you mean "witter" (pointless babble), or did you mistype "wittier"?

Do we need an rename crowner? There's honestly been no one defending this name at all.

I think we can skip the single prop in this case, since no one has offered any defense of the current name at all.

However, I'm not fond of Nerd In Denial, mostly because this character often isn't "in denial"; instead, they honestly don't know they're a nerd. "In denial" has a strong connotation of "Knows very well that they are, but won't admit it." In fact, the first definition I found is "a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence". The second one is "'In denial' means a refusal or unwillingness to accept something or to accept reality."

All right, then I'm going to list the current titles we've come up with so that people can brainstorm a better name.

Of them, I think Extroverted Nerd is the clearest. The others have a lot of connotations that make it unclear what they're about. Nerd In Denial sounds like someone who is in the closet about being a nerd. Oblivious Nerd sounds like the type of nerd that just seems oblivious to the fact that there's a world around them. (The opposite of this trope.)

It's a real trope. Steve Urkel is the Most Triumphant Example (sorry) of it, but it exists. In short it's a nerd who thinks he's cool and can't be convinced otherwise no matter how many people scream "NEEEERRRRDDDD!!!" at him in unison.

I'd go with Dork In Denial over Nerd In Denial since there are characters out there who are uncool-but-convinced-they're-totally-hip but aren't "nerds".

Well, it's getting a rename at the very least. Do you have any suggestions? I'm really not sure that there are characters other than the trope namer. The on page examples just list names.

You could always cut it and then YKKTW Dork In Denial to try and get some examples listed before it's launched. It might turn out to be too rare to trope.
