First played straight, then subverted: as he's sucked into his adventure without warning and has a lot of responsibility out on his shoulders, he learns to carry the burden and save the day. Along with his friends, too, but that depends upon if you've got a multiplayer game or not.

Spender appears to take this to heart, and then proceeds to blow his top the first time he comes across a suspicious-acting spirit and through several short-sighted actions nearly get his students killed.
