YMMV: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Did the Siamese twins cave during the "baby hunt," or did they see Spongebob and Patrick about to sing the Goofy Goober theme song and take the fall for them?
  • Anti-Climax Boss: Subverted. Dennis is built up as a major threat but crushed by the Cyclops moments after he finally catches up with the heroes before he can do much to them... Then he comes back and the actual fight with him takes place.
  • Awesome Art: While the show was already know for it's Deranged Animation and use of mixed media, the movie really uses the advantage of a bigger budget to make the animation much more fluid and have live-action blend far better than the TV show ever did. The end result is easily the best-looking Nickelodeon TV show-based movie ever!
  • Creepy Awesome: Dennis and the Cyclops.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Dennis.
  • Evil Is Cool: Dennis, which is why he has so many fans. Plankton also gets it because he was able to singlehandedly mind control everyone in Bikini Bottom and rule it as king.
  • Fanon: Fans like to believe that the pufferfish in Shell City is Mr. Puff, Mrs. Puff's missing, dead husband.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Well the Trope Namer is in this movie, so it is a given that the film would do well in Germany.
  • He Really Can Act: SpongeBob is known for being goofy and immature, but in this movie, Tom Kenny does an outstanding job at making the audience cry. Especially during the gift shop scene.
    • Not to mention that brief Heroic BSOD at the edge of the trench, where SpongeBob realizes how immature he is for his age. Hearing the guy sound so panicked and frustrated with himself is quite a shock.
  • Ho Yay: Spongebob and Patrick, of course. One notable example would be when Spongebob imagines Patrick having long, woman legs with fishnets during his singing of "Goofy Goober Rock." Spongebob even gets all wide eyed and excited when Patrick does the splits with said legs.
    • Spongebob somehow knows that Patrick has been wearing the same underwear for three years straight which Patrick wasn't even aware of. Makes you wonder...
  • Jerkass Woobie: We all know that Squidward can be a real selfish jerk most of the time, but you can't help but feel sorry for him when he gets cornered and attacked by an army of Plankton's mind controlled slaves for trying to rat out Plankton to King Neptune.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Plankton finally becomes this, as he succeeds in an Evil Plan for perhaps the first time ever.
    • Possibly the best example would be Plankton successfully framing Mr. Krabs for stealing the crown, with a simple phone call. But what really makes it it Plankton smirking, listening to Neptune scream.
    Plankton: "Plan Z. I love Plan Z!"
  • Magnum Opus: If "Band Geeks" was the peek of the series' greatness, this movie is this for Spongebob as a whole.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Surprised Patrick, from his reaction following Always a Bigger Fish. Pretty odd, considering the fact that the movie came out over ten years ago and has only recently become a meme - and the fact that SpongeBob was there pulling the exact same expression, yet he does NOT have the same Memetic status as Patrick (a fact that is lampshaded in this image).
    • "Waiter! Waiiiiiiterrrrr! WAITER!"
    • Bald! Bald! Bald!
    • The Goofy Goober Theme Song.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Plankton definitely crosses this when he steals Neptune's crown, frames Mr. Krabs for it (knowing very well that he'll be executed), brainwashing and enslaving Bikini Bottom and hiring Dennis to kill SpongeBob and Patrick. He takes it even further at the climax when he brainwashes King Neptune to not only kill SpongeBob and Patrick, but also kill Mindy, his own daughter.
  • Nausea Fuel: Spongebob and Patrick binging on ice cream, the frogfish and its tongue, and the see-through monster that almost eats the main duo during their singing of "Now That We're Men."
  • One-Scene Wonder: The Cyclops and the Frogfish only have a few minutes worth of screen time, but since their scenes were so nightmarish, it is hard to forget them after watching the film.
    • David H. is quite fondly remembered.
  • Purity Sue: Princess Mindy, arguably due to her Flat Character status mentioned above.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Some old fans wish that the villains won over the heroes since the main series' Seasonal Rot made Plankton more of a sympathetic Jerkass Woobie while Mr. Krabs turned into a cheap scrappy. There are also those who think that Plankton and Dennis were too cool to lose.
  • Shocking Swerve: Spongebob suddenly having the ability to turn into a rock warrior/wizard at the climax of the film. Nonetheless, it's still awesome to watch.
  • Signature Line:
    • BALD! BALD! BALD! MY EYES!
    • "I'm...I'm...I'm... I'M A GOOFY GOOBER! ROCK!
  • Signature Scene: Everyone remembers the scene when Spongebob uses the Power of Rock to destroy the Bucket helmets and defeat Plankton.
  • Signature Song: Although the movie has its own soundtrack worth of songs, most people only remember "Goofy Goober Rock" and/or "Now That We're Men".
  • Squick: Mr. Whiskers *shudder*.
    • Spongebob and Patrick taking turns in swallowing each other's gushing tears during their Heroic BSOD. Mindy's reaction perfectly mirrors how the audience feels about the situation.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The "Best Day Ever" song sung by Spongebob during the end credits.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Plankton. Some people felt that he should have won after dealing with Mr. Krabs' jerkassery for so long and having been nothing but a loser all his life. Never mind the fact that he took over and mind controlled all of Bikini Bottom against its citizens' wills...
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Mr. Krabs. We are supposed to feel sorry for him after being sentenced to death by fire and having his secret formula stolen from him by his arch nemesis, but it is hard to feel sorry for him since he is a cheapskate who only uses others for his benefit and considering this is supposed to be the Grand Finale, it is easy to take into consideration that after making Plankton's life hell (particularly in post-movie episodes), Plankton practically deserves to rub it into Mr. Krabs' face that he finally stole the secret formula.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Between the beautifully deranged animation, great use of the Roger Rabbit Effect, and other special effects, this is one great looking movie.
    • The David Hasselhoff dummy used for some of the scenes when Spongebob and Patrick are riding his back. It is so realistic that it is hard to tell at times when the real David is playing or the dummy is.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: SpongeBob and Patrick get drunk off of ice cream, and wake up with hangovers.
    • Mind-controlled slaves, a few deaths, and a violent hitman.
  • The Woobie: Spongebob after he lost to Squidward in becoming manager of the Krusty Krab. Later on he cries again when he thinks he and Patrick aren't manly enough to go through the monster infested trench.
    Spongebob: I'm ready... depression.
