YMMV / Mischief (MHA)

Go To

  • Adorkable:
    • Izuku was already this in canon, but is even more here, mostly because he has a confidant and trolling personality to balance his shy and dorky antics. His interactions with Ochako make her this a well.
    • Tenko becomes this too. Between his constant gamer lingo, his snarky interactions with Gran Torino and his unexpected Ship Tease with Tsu, he definitely gives a ride to Izuku's money on the matter of dorkiness.
    • Hirona becomes as well. While she goes back and forth between being insecure and tragic, she also presents herself as an endearing dork with her fangirl antics with Nagant.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal:
    • Hana being All for One's apprentice. Since Tenko is not a villain here, it was the only possible choice left. To be fair, the author did not made enough effort to make it a secret.
    • Doctor Reiwaru being Mephisto. While he managed to fool readers in his first few appearances, his constant Devil-related jokes made rather obvious that Tensei's doctor is Marvel's version of the Devil.
  • Crazy Is Cool:
    • Izuku himself acknowledges he is not a completely sane person, we are talking about a boy whose only friends were his Literal Split Personality clones. Still, he is a brilliant strategist genius who always manages to overcome the odds, with the most outrageous solutions.
    • Mei, even more than canon. A young Mad Scientist with access to alien technology and a genius that rivals many characters, including Izuku himself, her most daring scheme includes hacking her away across I-Island's top notch security and taking control of all the Iron Man suits being exposed at the local exposition.
  • Creepy Awesome:
    • Gorr. The man may be off his rockers, and straight out of a slasher movie, but no can deny how cool he is, specially with the improvement towards his MCU counterpart.
    • The Ghost Rider, per usual. Arriving at the fight on Hosu, and quite literally unleashing Hell upon Stain and Gorr, the Spirit of Vengeance is arguably the best example of this in the story.
    • Venom, as expected from one of the coolest alien parasites in pop culture.
    • Fumikage's Mook Horror Show after becoming Moon Knight manages to be equal parts haunting and badass.
  • Creepy Cute: The USJ Nomu, also known as "Nomy". We are talking gigantic mass of muscles with an exposed brain that acts as the world's creepiest St. Bernard dog. You can't help but coo during his interactions with Eri.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Dabi and Daken's Villains Out Shopping moment in chapter 60. Daken accidentally cutting a guy in half (guts dripping on the floor and all of that) and Dabi threatening to burn a woman alive shouldn't be funny, but this single display of genuine Villainous Friendship between two of the most apathetic members of the League manages to come out as both hilarious and kinda heartwarming in a very messed way.
  • Epileptic Trees: Ever since Setsuna gained the Venom symbiote, who was locked up on I-Island alongside Carnage, fans have begun to speculate on potential candidates for Venom's Arch-Enemy, with Himiko Toga, who often gains Carnage in many Spider-Man/MHA crossover fics, being by far the most popular. Which made the reveal of Himiko's both having a different Marvel upgrade (Being a pseudo-vampire ala Blade) and her Adaptational Heroism a massive shock, and has resulted in Wild Mass Guessing for who else could become the next Carnage.
  • Evil Is Cool:
    • Loki, per usual, displays his Magnificent Bastard status with swagger and confidence, and the readers love him for it.
    • The League gets this treatment, with Hirona being more competent than Tomura in early canon, not to mention the addition of Nagant so early in the story. It gets even better by the time they include Marvel characters to their ranks.
    • Taskmaster and Kraven are this as well. Their fight is considered one of the best ones in the story.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Given the amount of power-ups the 1-A students gain throughout the story, they are nicknamed "Class 1-Avengers".
    • Since their respective status as the Team Mom and Team Dad from the League, Nagant and Kurogiri are referred as "Momgant" and "Papagiri" by readers.
    • At Discord, Mustard earned the nickname "Musterio", since he is a Mysterio fanboy.
    • The bull criminal from the first chapter who returns on I-Island is nicknamed "Bullkugo" for his similarity with the explosive blonde.
    • After becoming the new Venom, Setsuna earned the nickname "Set-Venom."
    • Fans started to call Mei "Iron Mei-den" after her amazing feat of stealing Iron Man suits at I-Island. After she debuts on her Sinister Suit, it evolves into "Total Mei-Hem".
    • Due to being Multi-Armed and Dangerous, as well as carrying and spinning Whiplash's weapons during the fight, Shoji started being called "General Grievous", since his fighting style is similar to the droid general's.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With Back to the Beginning. The authors are fans of each other's works and often exchange ideas about each other.
    • With To Cross the Line. The authors are fans of each other’s works and often exchange ideas with each other. Kage has stated that JustaPerson1 was the person who encouraged him to publish in the first place. She also helps Kage with the chapter editing.
    • With Ignited Spark. KageNekem is a fan of Spark, and the story's version of Itsuka is what inspired his own take on the character starting with the Guardians Training Camp arc.
  • Genius Bonus: In Chapter 60, it's revealed that the Venom Symbiote had four hosts before the story began: Peter Parker, Eddie Brock, Flash Thompson and someone named Marshall. There is no with this name listed as Venom's previous host in the comics, until you realize that "Marshall" stands for "Marshall Bruce Mathers III", best known as Eminem, who provided the end credits sing for Venom (2018). And for extra bonus, Izuku is actually listening Venom by Eminem on the flight to I-Island in chapter 50. Looks like the singer's time with the symbiote provided him inspiration for one of his best hits.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Hawks interactions with the kids during the final exam. It's great to see a fan favorite character joining the story officially, but it takes a bitter note, considering it came one day after chapter 385 of the manga, where All for One steals Hawks' Quirk and leaves him and all the heroes at Gunga Mountain near dead.
    • Chapter 58 reveals that David Shield has been replaced by a Skrull, and according to the author, this happened at least a couple years before canon. This chapter was released six days after the poorly received ending of Secret Invasion (2023), where it was never fully clarified when the infiltrators replaced the originals. The author wasn't particularly excited to reveal it, afraid people wouldn't take a Skrull reveal well so soon after such a badly developed show, but viewers appreciated and considered it way better than what the TV series delivered, leaving an opportunity for a Savaged Story.
    • In Chapter 49, Kraven manages to swiftly defeat Shishido on a rooftop before Taskmaster executes the hero with a bullet in the head. Months later, in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 mission, Don't Be Scared features Venom facing off against Kraven, before killing the hunter by eating his head off, on a rooftop at Times Square. It becomes even worse after Chapter 71, when Setsuna, fully embracing her Venom powers, goes to take on Kraven after he nearly kills Denki.
    • Chapter 69 features Mustard trapping Izuku and several of his classmates in a series of nightmarish illusions to made out of their worst fears. In X-Men '97 Episode, "Fire Made Flesh" has Madelyn Pryor doing the same thing with the X-Men.
    • Speaking of X-Men '97, the entire I-Island arc becomes this after Wham Episode "Remember It". Much like in the story, the episode features an attack by a killer robot, the Tri-Sentinel, that causes the deaths of hundreds of people, including Gambit and several others, not to mention it leaves Genosha in ruins, almost like in the end of the I-Island arc, which itself was a lot Darker and Edgier in contrast to the rest of the fic with several characters dying halfway through it, when Ultron reveals that he survived the heroes attempts to destroy him and nearly sinks the island with most of the main cast on it.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight:
    • Izuku and Ochako's Love Confession on chapter 43 happened on the same week that the two of them had one at Back to the Beginning and To Cross the Line. The three authors commented that it was a complete and happy accident.
    • In the story, not only I-Island main security force are the Iron Legion drones, but Melissa also wears a Powered Armor with technology from Green Goblin, Hawkeye and Ant-Man. Comes chapter 396 of the manga, All Might debuts his "Armored All Might" (or as dubbed by fans, "Iron Might") battle suit for his final fight against All for One, and not only the suit includes technology based on Class 1-A students' Quirks, but was also made by Melissa herself.
    • Inko's comment in Chapter 22, on how Loki always gives her stories to tell can be seen as this after the season 2 finale of Loki, which features Loki becoming the God of Stories, and protector of the Multivers, finally achieving his own glorious purpose.
    • Shoto, Momo, and Kyoka bonding over the boy's newfound love for music (with the Ship Tease happening at the same time) becomes this after the What If…? (2021) episode, "What If... Peter Quill Attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes?", where a young Peter Quill and Hope van Dyne bond over their love for 80s music. Whether the former can be seen in a romantic or platonic light, depends on the viewer.
    • Chapter 70 reveals that the pink haired girl that Ochako some very needed encouragement to embrace her feelings for Izuku back in Chapter 25 is actually a disguised Himiko, who went to the Festival to check on him. It's rather wholesome to know that a character like Himiko, who is very vocal about being true to your feelings, especially when it comes to love, ended up being indirectly responsible for one of the story's main pairings.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • All Might's duel with Thor during with during the Final Exams gets a lot funnier when you realize that the two heroes are no only similar in terms of being blonde, blue-eyed, hot-bloodded, Large Hams, and the most powerful heroes of the world, but also because both of them are voiced by Kenta Miyake. Imagine how hilarious voicing this fight would sound.
    • Chapter 48 features All Might successfully lifting Mjölnir and using it against Thor. In chapter 386 of the manga, All Might prepares himself to use an Iron Man like armor to face off against All for One for the last time.
    • Back in Chapter 22, Shoto, in his Conspiracy Theorist mindset, wondered if Sero wasn't related to Spider-Man. In Chapter 57, Sero gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gains powers similar to Spider-Man's.. Later on Chapter 28, he wonders if Izuku is aware of any secret alien force invading Earth. The following chapter reveals that the Skrulls are already infiltrated on several levels of Earth's infrastructure. This last one can be either Harsher in Hindsight or just a really fine example of Black Comedy. Or both.
    • Several elements from the I-Island arc would also appear in the What If…? (2021) Christmas Episode, "What If... Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?", such as the entire "Die Hard" on an X situation, mercenaries attacking the place, Iron Legion drones going rogue, someone doning the Hulkbuster and one of the heroes being accidentally injected with a replica of the Super Soldier serum (in Mischief Sero gains Spider-Man powers, while Bakugo gains Nitro's; in What If Happy gets injected with Hulk serum). Ironic enough, the episode itself one is of the most comedic ones while the I-Island arc is of the darkest arcs of the story so far.
  • Idiosyncratic Ship Naming:
    • Denki and Setsuna get the couple name of "Dino Thunder", a reference to the Power Rangers season of the same name, because Setsuna loves dinosaurs and Denki is the Prince of Thunder.
    • Nejire and Hirona gained the ship name "Spiral Rose", since Nejire's Quirk creates spirals and Hirona's previous name Hana, can be translated into "flower".
    • Tenko and Tsu are called "Sand Season", because Tsu's hero sobriquet is "Rainy Season Hero" and because everyone agrees that "sand" is sounds more romantic than dust.
  • I Knew It!: From the moment I-Island had an Egyptian exposition, many fans accurately predicted that Moon Knight would join the cast, and that Fumikage would be his host.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Hirona Shigaraki, previously known as Hana Shimura. Accidentally killed by her own brother, ressurected by the God of Mischief to serve as an unwilling apprentice to All for One, whom he constantly compares unfavorably to Tenko in order to drive her hatred for society further, Hirona ends up taking an even tragic turn than Tenko went through in canon.
    • Mustard. The kid suffers from a serious case of Evil Cannot Comprehend Good, to the point he doesn't understand why it's not okay for a hero student not to use their target's greatest fears to get an advantage, but it mainly rooted in the abuse he suffered ever since his Quirk came in, being locked in his house's basement and having no interactions with people of his age until he met the League. It doesn't make any of his actions forgivable, but it's hard not to feel sorry for him.
  • Memetic Badass: Doctor Doom gained this status before even being properly introduced in the story, then his single short appearance in Chapter 62 cemented him as the most powerful being in the story, superior to gods and any other omniscient being.
  • Memetic Loser: Mustard. From the moment he made his intentions to come off as the "superior Master of Illusion" against Izuku, all readers immediately knew he would fail miserably when he tried to take on the Prince of Mischief. Come Chapter 69, and it turns out the fight was so one-sided, it barely qualifies as a Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Moral Event Horizon: While Gorr undoubtedly crossed the line with his atrocities way before the story begins, during it he does so by killing the demi-human children at the Half-Blood Camp.
  • One True Threesome: Even though there was no indication of a polyamory romance happening, by Chapter 62 fans started to see Momo, Shoto and Kyoka through Shipping Goggles lens. Then the Guardians Trainning Camp arc comes along, and with that a lot of Threesome Subtext between the characters starts to happen as well.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The Skrulls, per canon. Not only they have successfully infiltrated the HSPC, but if Loki's conversation is to go by, they have more than one mole inside U.A.
  • Salvaged Story: Amongst the main complaints from Marvel fans regarding Thor: Love and Thunder is that from a man with the title "The God Butcher", Gorr doesn't really butcher any gods on-screen during his Roaring Rampage of Revenge other than his first victim, and even then, it was totally deserved. Here though, we get to see it, starting with the jerks from Omnipotence City to the demi-god children from Camp Half-Blood, and it's brutal. The story really makes Gorr earn his title.
  • Signature Scene: The fight between All Might and Thor during the Final Exams arc, especially the Hypercane/Asgard Smash moment.
  • Squick: For the sake of your sanity, try not to think too much on the fact that Loki has a horse as a son. Or pay too much attention when he... flirts with the horses (named Brenda and Ingrid) during the flashback in Chapter 27.
  • Unexpected Character: Despite being a crossover, several character appearances caught readers off guard.
    • Wolverine and Laura's appearance, as well as their eventual addition as recurring story members was praised by readers. Colossus joining him was also well-received.
    • The Skrulls being members of the Villain Team-Up alongside Thanos and All for One, as well as already setting up a possible Secret Invasion like arc, surprised many readers.
    • Even if everyone accurately predicted Mephisto being Tensei's doctor, nobody expected the older Iida to become the Ghost Rider.
    • While it was expected that Marvel characters would also join the League to make up for the ones on the hero's side, no one expected big names like Daken, Taskmaster and Kraven the Hunter, to be the first ones.
    • The Reveal on chapter 48, that David Shield is creating Ultron was considered one of the most shocking moments of the story.
      • Going along, the surprise appearance of his Ultimate, Yellowjacket, Absorbing Man and MCU counterparts also caught readers off guard. There is also Ultrog, the gorilla version of the character that debuts in chapter 57.
    • Since the story is set so far into the future, it's expected at least one MHA character to be a Legacy Character to a Marvel. No one expected, however, that Rock Lock, out of all people, to be the current Black Panther.
    • The Guardians of Galaxy becoming the student's mentors during the Training Camp and said camp happening in Knowhere out of all places was highly praised for its originality and creativity.
    • Blade surprise appearance in Chapter 70 came out as a shock, although not a pleasant one, since he was trying to kill a non villainous Himiko.
