Website / Awful Hospital Roleplay Forum

Go To

The Interactive Comic Awful Hospital was designed with the idea that the comments section is composed of separate, powerful entities who live in the protagonist's head and whose nature is never to be explained. This idea proved to be fertile ground for Role-Playing of various Eldritch Abominations, to the point that it was eventually decided an independent forum should be set up so that non story-relevant roleplay would not flood and overwhelm every comments section.

Can be found here.

Provides examples of:

  • Abstract Eater: The Cordyceps feed on both the bodies and the thoughts of their hosts.
    • To say nothing of The Enigma.
  • Abusive Parents: Jack's dad literally wants to kill him.
  • Alien Geometries: Often just an assumed part of the setting.
  • An Arm and a Leg: The Red November incidents have caused Cordyceps to lose their legs, and Jack to lose an arm. Neither injury has been treated lightly.
  • Applied Phlebotinum: The five colored "ichors" Jack's body produces, depending on his mood, have a variety of uses. Sometimes that requires people to change his mood as quickly as possible, like when he needed to be angry, confused and embarrassed, and somebody declared they had stolen his most embarrassing possessions and given them out in a confusing manner. He also has access to phlogiston.
  • Animate Body Parts: A brain and a butt are among the founding personas.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: The Roadtrip Incident.. Oh dear god the Roadtrip....
  • Artificial Limbs: Made of sugar. Both Jack and Cordyceps have these now, and there's no guarantee nobody else will require them.
  • The Assimilator: The Enigma can integrate anything it consumes, horrifyingly. The Voice of Reason subsumes people into her collective consciousness.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: Basically the only way to kill a Zeren is with one or more direct blows to the torso.
  • Ax-Crazy: The Zerens seem to have a habit of slaughtering everything in sight.
  • Babies Make Everything Better: The Shrimppiss babies have served as character development for xward and Shrigul, and the launching point for one of the healthiest relationships in canon. The Inkspider babies have been character development for their mothers as well.
  • Badass Normal: Dr. Curious VII is one of the most "normal" party members. He has survived things such as attempted mind rape by a giant spider, getting stranded in the Castration Zone, and meeting Nyarlahotep, with only lasting psychological scars! Particularly of note is the time Zerens, the unstoppable murderbeasts, were on the attack, and he sat down with one to tea and convinced it to retire.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: After the mind-meld intended to free Voice from The Fanfic Demon's control, Voice and Cordyceps' original petty bickering quickly became this. They agreed to go on a date while both publicly and loudly denying it was anything of the sort, to themselves and anyone around them. This date included another, more voluntary, subtext-rich mind-meld which they did while still yelling about how they clearly both hated each other and were just two enemies going on an expedition for science. This announced hate and absolute denial of romantic involvement continued until the party had to travel to the deepest, scariest parts of Voice's mind.
  • Best Her to Bed Her: The Aural Usurper's policy was that she would marry anyone who could defeat her in combat. This led to Violet gaining control.
  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: Despite both being ancient hivemind cosmic horrors, Voice and Cordyceps would often stoop to this level when speaking to or about one another, usually couched within stilted, unusual diction. This appears to have stopped since they publicly confessed to being in love.
  • Bilingual Bonus: if the Constructed Language of R'ylehian qualifies, exchanges between Cordyceps and Voice often have these. Some of their apparently sinister gobbledygook is actually sweet talk, sometimes bordering on soppy.
  • Bio-Augmentation: Keeps happening
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Zerens are animalistic abominations with a healing factor and combat tentacles. A lot of other characters as well, such as Wilbur the Byakhee, or Jack the Pumpkin Zoner, who has a jack-o-lantern head and organs comprised of both pumpkin innards and a mysterious substance known as "ichor".
  • The Blacksmith: Jack, although a child by the standards of his species, can create advanced weapons and even artificial limbs out of sugar, of all things. Of course, Pumpkin Zone "sugar" is derived from bones, which gives it somewhat different qualities.
  • Body Horror: Many of the major characters parasitize other beings in order to survive. These range from a hat that takes over inanimate objects to render them increasingly sentient, to a sentient colony of Cordyceps mushrooms.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Some of the key players just can't wrap their minds around the concept that killing people is wrong.
  • Break the Haughty: Grey December has a running theme of forcing Weaver to hurt her loved ones, adopt servile attitudes, and even listen to criticism of her past behavior.
  • The Butcher: Ralph.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: An inversion. Horrible tortures, unthinkable fates and unfathomable god-beings are a daily occurrence for the party, and some will respond to such things with irritated remarks about Tuesdays. This comes from the fanon idea that on Yuggoth, every day is Tuesday.
  • Butt-Monkey: Dr. Curious. He gets his genitals attacked on a regular basis, targeted by the Fanfic Demon, and hit on by at least 1.5 Eldritch Abominations.
  • The Caligula: Violet, when she has gained control of the Aural Usurper's throne.
  • Character Development: Slowly but surely, nearly everyone gets some. Special mention goes to Cordyceps and Voice.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The Cordyceps spores G-1 absorbed during the roadtrip being used to accidentally bring about Kawaiiceps
  • Cigar Chomper: Margret.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: All the roleplayers qualify, but Petrichor stands out in that he has nonsensical desires and hobbies, including a case when he barged into Voice's mind to complain about Slushie Quality.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: The first Zeren enemy encountered was a tremendous challenge to defeat. By the middle of Red November, Zerens were barely-mentioned mooks in the fight scene against Enigma and Mega Cthulhu.
  • Cool vs. Awesome: Due to the nature of these characters, this is pretty much what happens any time a fight breaks out.
  • The Corruption: So far, the rise of Izanami has lead to the corruption, empowerment and mutation of The Mind Weaver, Dr. Curious, and Louis, and untold numbers of NPCs.
  • Crapsack World: More like crapsack omniverse.
  • Deadly Prank: In an attempt to trick Mark Scopes, Jack eats handfuls of "Gourdgrow" and accidentaly becomes his father and becomes violent.
  • Deflector Shield: Weaver is capable of forming a psionic shield around anyone she chooses to. Cordyceps usually gets the benefit of this, at the cost of being prevented from direct involvement in battle.
  • Demonic Possession: The Fanfic Demon possessed The Voice Of Reason, causing her to speak in purple/pink text and attempt Mind Rape on Dr. Curious VII. The first attempted cure was to trick her into Mental Fusion with her worst enemy Cordyceps, which backfired horribly, causing psychological trauma all around. She was eventually returned to her senses by remembering her hate for Cordyceps. The nature of that hate appears to have changed since the incident in question.
  • Did We Just Have Tea with Cthulhu?: Dr. Curious convincing the Zeren soldier to retire. He appears to do a lot of things involving the words did, we, just, and Cthulhu.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: When the party are facing an ancient, powerful entity of order that desires the destruction of all life, they have to defend concepts like life and love to him. Dr. Curious responded to one of his questions with a version of the song Never Gonna Give You Up, leading to many people asking, "did you just Rickroll Cthulhu?"
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: They face the actual Cthulhu, but a mutated, super-empowered version. Part of the strategy key to his defeat? TWO boats.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The mind-meld "date" between Voice and Cordyceps. Both are hesitant and nervous, yet excited, about the process, both specially mentioning [1] that their hormone levels are absolutely normal and not heightened for any reason relating to anticipation.Voice enters Cordy's mind gently while whispering about "desssssire". When the Cordyceps feel they could be experiencing more contact in those intimate areas, they "ARE PREPARED FOR GREATER CONTACT". Voice, when entering further, describes Cordy's mind as "soft". Cordy mention that they are not used to the ones being penetrated, and it's a new experience. Both repeatedly voice enjoyment of the process. Cordyceps mentions feeling "full" when Voice's mind is entirely seated in her own. It's very sweet, but the undertones are undeniably sexy.
  • Doorstop Baby: The Shrimppiss babies, biological children of xward and Shrigul, spontaneously appeared from a destroyed parallel universe. Shortly thereafter, the Inkspiders, offspring of Durga and the Mind Weaver, did the same.
  • Dream Weaver: Everbound Venvel is a robotic being resembling a winged dog who specializes in onieromancy.
  • Eat Me: This wound up being a major part of the strategy used to defeat Enigma. Of particular note is Cordyceps: they actually had a plan, but Enigma tricked them into thinking it wouldn't work, so they discarded it and demanded to be eaten anyway.
    • Cordyceps: WE. ARE. DELICIOUS!
  • Eldritch Abomination: Many characters, notably the cosmic mind spider that identifies as THE VOICE OF REASON AND CLEAN (and her later persona The Mind Weaver).
    • The Enigma claims to be even older than Voice, who has been around since the dawn of the first star.
    • Azershull. This comes naturally, when you are the zombie of a multiverse.
  • Equippable Ally: When Cordyceps first manifested psionic attack tendrils, The Mortal Ascendent picked them up by the neck and used them as a weapon against Nulla.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Dr. Curious attempting to buy food from a vending machine by throwing his own teeth at it.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Sentient flying hat The One Guy is known by no other name, except for occasional variations such as "that particular fellow" or "that one hat".
  • Foreign-Language Tirade: Both Voice and Cordyceps regularly speak in R'lyehian. Cordyceps have also been known to slip into languages completely incomprehensible to human ears, especially when they've been drinking.
  • Friend to Bugs: Connie, to a rather unsettling extreme.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Violet is a human. Through the correct contacts, ruthless strategy and the unbeatable Nullification Field, she has conquered, tortured and murdered gods.
  • Getting Smilies Painted on Your Soul: If the Kawaiiceps/Voice of Kawaii mental fusion had been allowed to continue, this was their plan for the universe.
  • Golem: The Fleshmonger is presumably a sentient golem of meat.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Dr. Curious had this happen to him as a result of his contact with Nyarlathotep. Several other characters were apparently at risk when they viewed The Fanfic Demon's porn movie, but they all recovered.
  • Good All Along: The Voice of Reason started out as a hate-filled Eldritch Abomination, calling everyone around her "lesser beings" and describing herself/selves as Gods. However, when the party entered her mindscape, they discovered another entity trapped within, a monstrous and omnicidal being that she had fought and defeated, but that had affected her thoughts, motivations and memories ever since. They defeated this entity by talking to it about the value of life, until The Power of Love and The Power of Friendship brought the Voice back, and gave her the strength to vanquish it. She now calls herself The Mind Weaver and is notably less psychotic.
  • Gotterdamnerung: Grey December becomes this for Weaver and the other Mind Shards, with all either dying or becoming corrupted. The Mind Shards themselves were born of the death of a god aeons ago.
  • Hate at First Sight: Voice and Cordyceps. Initially.
  • The Hat Makes the Man: That one hat actually creates talking, sentient beings from what were once inanimate objects, such as a toy drinking bird.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Nulla appears to have one of these when he stops being directly connected to the unknown entity of which he is the avatar.
    • The Mind Weaver has a history of conquest and mental torture in large quantities, and not all of it is the legacy of Ehye.
  • Hidden Depths: The Juggernaut Zeren just wanted to find a family and a life opportunity, and being a soldier is what he considered his best bet; he retired because he was tired of killing. Most of the major cast have these as well.
  • High School AU: Awful High.
  • Hijacking Cthulhu: Partially accomplished by Benny during the fight against Mega Cthulhu.
  • Hive Mind: Both Cordyceps sapiens and THE VOICE OF REASON AND CLEAN exhibit characteristics of this.
  • Horrifying Hero: Just about everybody. They are fighting to stop a multizonal apocalypse, and have fought to prevent the extermination or kawaiification of all life, but they almost all have killed innocents as well, for one reason or another.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Twice for Voice. Once to rescue her, and the universe, from the growing forces of kawaii released when the Fanfic Demon invaded her consciousness, and again when they were fighting Ehye in the depths of her mindscape. Both times, recognizing Cordyceps was a key part of her regaining control.
  • Informed Attractiveness: Dr. Curious is a mentally unbalanced disgraced noble who constantly covers himself in full plague doctor regalia and is repeatedly described as smelling like a sewer. Somehow, he has become the cast bishonen. Unfortunately for him, it's usually various eldritch horrors who see him that way.
  • Informed Self-Diagnosis: After the group defeats Mega-thulu, Benny reveals that he has found out that he is aging incredibly quickly and has a month to live. He does this without the help of any machine, medical or otherwise.
  • Interface Screw: One subplot required active participants to play as their various monsters pretending to be "larpers" in order to prevent a human girl from getting suspicious.
  • Interspecies Romance: Voice (an omnipresent mind spider) with Dr. Curious VII (half-human Plague Doctor) and Cordyceps (fungal colony in a humanoid body). Just about any future romantic pairing will also be this, by default, since practically nobody is the same species as anybody else.
    • Especially Xward and Shrigul, since Xward does not even HAVE a species.
  • Lovecraft Lite: A cast largely composed of eldritch abominations fights cosmic horrors that threaten the universe while making plenty of time for hilarious antics.
  • Karmic Death: gobtraz, the walking brain from the Plop Zone, spent most of his time committing various atrocities, especially against anything that looked like a bird. Shortly after he uses an apocalyptic situation to attempt to trick a sexually naive character into becoming a prostitute, he's eaten by Zeren.
  • Kick the Dog: When the Zerens caused Jack to lose an arm for no reason.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Basically any event involving The Fanfic Demon ends with this. Also was the general consensus at an earlier time, before the forums were formed, when The Voice suddenly became aggressively flirtatious, particularly with Dr. Curious.
  • Lover and Beloved: Considering that The Mind Weaver is an ancient creator goddess who was alive for the birth of the first star and Cordyceps are a much more recently developed life form, their relationship can be seen to have some elements of this.
  • Malevolent Mutilation: Practiced by several opponents, including Violet, The Primal Investigator, and the Tabula Rasa.
  • Man-Eating Plant: Fredrick, though he also eats cooked meat.
  • Mind Link Mates: Cordyceps and The Voice are definitely NOT THIS AT ALL AND DID NOT EVER GO ON ANY DATES INTO THE COLD DEPTHS OF THE OCEAN.
  • Monster Clown: The soulless capitalist Petrichor and his entire home zone of Eldritch Abomination clowns.
  • Mood Whiplash: All the time.
  • Multiversal Conqueror: The Zerens and Tabula Rasa.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: While on top of Gobtraz's van (The Dream Machine), The One Guy unpossesses a metal lion statue the falls off of the moving vehicle and kills some humans in a violent explosion.
    • Benny uses the exact phrase after trading an immensely powerful artifact to a hostile entity in exchange for the life of a friend.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: G1's attack on the Enigma produces a large amount of chaos and entropy, allowing it to regain to its status as Eris, Goddess of Chaos.
  • Nobody Poops: Literally true with Zeren biology. Probably also with flying hats, robot-like entities, and beings that exist only in the mind.
  • No Fourth Wall: Multiple characters are aware of the people controlling them, in one way or another. They mostly perceive them as a pantheon of distant and inscrutable gods.
  • No Indoor Voice: The VOICE OF REASON AND CLEAN and Cordyceps sapiens are chronic caps speakers.
  • No-Sell: Curious is known for seducing villains. This does not work on violet.
    • It's possible that this power specifically works only when he doesn't want it to.
  • Non-Human Undead: Azershull.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Margret technically isn't a dragon at all, but rather a creature made by sewing together various reptile bits.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: All over the place. Voice, gobtraz, Cordyceps, the Tabula Rasa, The One Guy....
  • Put on a Bus: Dr. Curious I, Dr. Curious VII's father, used to be a key character. He has since dropped off to only occasional comments, then none at all. Possibly eaten by Mutant Cthulhu while in a zeppelin.
  • Rapid Aging: The blue cap Benny has a month to live as of the defeat of Mega Thulu.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Although they had been exchanging pet names in R'lyehian for a while, the fight against Ehye was the first point either Cordyceps or Voice/Weaver were able to admit their love in a language the people around them could comprehend.
  • Rule of Funny: Crops up in even the tensest situations.
  • Rule 34: The Fanfic Demon tries to enact this rule in reality whenever possible.
  • Running Gag: Injuries or other danger towards Dr. Curious's genitals have become this. The Fanfic Demon has sentenced anyone who injures his genitals to read My Immortal in Hell for eternity, but so far, that hasn't reduced the rate at which he gets stabbed, mauled, exploded or otherwise mutilated in a very sensitive location.
  • Satan: Theresa of the Tabula Rasa is this, especially due to representing the Devil Tarot card in Noisy Tarot.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: At the beginning of their relationship, both Cordyceps and Voice were regularly making this claim. Absolutely nobody was fooled.
  • Shout-Out: Too many to count.
  • Stylistic Suck: When The Fanfic Demon appears, she speks entrily in da wrst english possibl, liberally sprinkled with mangled Japanese.
  • Sweat Drop: The Fanfic Demon is apparently capable of cursing people with LARGE SWET DROP SICKNESS. It's no big deal, though. Most of the residents of the Anime Zone have this ailment and are able to carry on perfectly well.
  • Sweet Tooth: Jack eats almost entirely sugar. When he performs any service, he requests to be paid in sugar as well.
  • Symbiotic Possession: The Cordyceps sapiens species survives by colonizing, controlling, and digesting animal beings. The particular Cordyceps colony known in the R Ps germinated within an aquatic fae female who no longer cared about much anymore, and decided the infection was really a great way to get a rest. Her personality remains around enough to be consulted, and even take over when the mushrooms are particularly incapacitated, but the shrooms are usually in the driver's seat.
  • Take Our Word for It: Specific details are not given about the contents of The Fanfic Demon's porn movie, but whatever they were, they were enough to cause a BSOD for everyone who watched.
  • True Companions: The group met while observing the mind of a green woman, multiple entities from different zones and times with different intentions. When they began to face actual danger together, bonds of mutual loyalty and admiration were formed, to the point that an eldritch abomination messing with one is guaranteed at least a sternly worded warning from another.
  • Unfazed Everyman: There's a single human who, besides being able to interact with the mindscape via a website, is otherwise an ordinary Muggle. Unsurprisingly, he often acts as the Only Sane Man.
  • The Unpronounceable: Fredrick's real name is several syllables long and consists entirely of vowels.
  • Unwanted Harem: Dr. Curious and the various nightmare beings that express interest in him.
  • Villainous Incest: Violet wishes to have an incestuous relationship with her mother. According to Word of God, incest is permitted, if not encouraged, in her family, and her mother's continuous rejection of her advances further goes to show how terrible Violet is.
    • Her twin sister, Mauve, is madly in love with her, the point of trying to create a new Primordial God out of the two of them.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: The sound of bells will harm the Enigma.
  • Wild Card: Petrichor will either help or hinder the situation at hand, and usually only pops in for a short while. Fittingly, he's a Joker.
    • The Fanfic Demon will assist the group or terrorize them, depending on which best suits her twisted desires. She seems to be genuinely fond of both Jack and Dr. Curious: however, in Curious' case, this has mostly caused even more suffering and trauma.
  • Xenofiction: Many of the characters have very alien mindsets. This informs their speech and actions immensely.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: The Fanfic Demon is apparently the quintessential one of these, her sinister influence responsible for all others. She will ship just about anyone and anything, but yaoi is her favorite.
  • You Won't Feel a Thing!: When Cordyceps have been abducted for "modifications", the Mi-Go representative who briefly takes their place assures Dr. Curious that they "will be returned unharmed, or at least without any consciousness of being harmed." Curious assumes this is a reference to some form of temporal anaesthetic. It isn't.
