Shipping / Genshin Impact

Go To

Unsurprisingly, due to how huge Genshin Impact is and how attractive most of its playable characters are, it’s unlikely that one can venture into the fandom without seeing mixed and matched combinations of characters, with or without canon interactions, with some being more popular than others. In fact, there are so many ships in the Genshin fandom that its shipping-related tropes warrant their own page.

Beware of unmarked spoilers!

    Die For Our Ship
While there aren't many canon ships in Genshin (and the few that are canon are exclusively between NPCs), this doesn't stop some Vocal Minority shippers from wishing death on anyone who gets in the way of their preferred pairings:
  • Both Travelers have Ship Tease with nearly all playable characters regardless of gender. However, suggestions of Aether in heterosexual relationships have particularly gained the ire of many Het Is Ew shippers, especially Yuri Fangirls, due to popular interpretations by (presumably often male) self-inserters of Aether as a lustful womanizing Harem Seeker and his targets as blushing Satellite Love Interests and Clingy Jealous Girls, diverging significantly from the Traveler's canonical characterization as a genuine Nice Guy who prioritizes looking for their sibling over romance as well as the unique personalities of the women. He can be so hated that even standing beside a female character can prompt a knee-jerk reaction, especially if the game forces the player into a few maybe-dates during a character's story quest/hangout.
  • Furina's story may have endeared her to the fandom, but she's not immune from many Wriothesley/Neuvillette shippers' wrath who, hoping their pairing would be as (seemingly) heavily supported by canon as Alhaitham/Kaveh, went ballistic towards her after the Archon Quest made it clear that Neuvillette cares for her instead. These shippers disregard her role in saving Fontaine while exaggerating her genuine personality to paint her as an immature, infantile figure that Neuvillette has to care for, or pair her with the Traveler or Arlecchino so she's out of the way. Surprisingly, a few of them are alright with shipping Neuvillette with Focalors, but that may be because she's already dead, so she's not a threat to their pairing.
  • Ayato is extremely loathed by radical Ei/Yae Miko shippers even before he appeared in-game, just for the heinous crime of Ayato and Yae Miko working together to save Inazuma and him being able to one-up Yae Miko's The Gadfly tendencies. The hatred intensified after Ayato and Yae Miko worked together in a few limited-time events where they're shown to be quite friendly, and even a little flirty, with each other. This led to radical shippers proclaiming that "Yae Miko is a lesbian and hates men" and the death threats even spilled to anyone who shipped the two together, or even any male character just within breathing distance of Ei and Yae Miko.
  • Even though Guizhong has been dead for millennia, she's despised by many shippers, especially in the Chinese community, simply because there were theories suggesting she was "close friends" and ruled alongside Zhongli in the past. It's believed that this led to the removal of a book about their past from beta because it hinted at a romantic connection between them. The hate only cooled after the Lantern Rite event where she was paired with Streetward Rambler without any mention of her relationship with Zhongli, much to the disappointment of many Zhongli/Guizhong fans.

    Foe Yay Shipping
  • There are quite a few players who ship both genders of the Traveler with the Fatui Harbingers. Tartaglia deserves special mention, as he's rather friendly even as he openly intends to fight the Traveler.
  • To say nothing of the Raiden Shogun/Ei, who is frequently paired with the Traveler in various circles, even though the initial interactions between the two were... less than pleasant. Granted, she did have a change of heart, but the initial duels between them were so memorable that it stuck in a lot of players' minds.
  • The Cicin Mage is also sometimes paired up with the Traveler as well, mainly due to her rather erotic voice.
  • After the "Unreconciled Stars" Event, some players ship Scaramouche with either the Traveler or Mona. Fans of the latter like to have Mona acting all smug towards Scaramouche after he demands to know how she recognized him as a threat. The announcement that Scaramouche would become playable under the moniker "Wanderer" seems to have only boosted the ship's popularity.
  • After Enjou reveals himself to be an Abyss Lector, he claims that he had many reasons to want to kill the Traveler. However, after spending some time with them, he admits that he came to a few reasons against killing them and even says he prefers them over his boss, the Ruler of the Abyss Order.
    Enjou: I rather like you.
  • Kujou Sara and Kokomi is a popular ship due to their mutual respect for each other's military expertise despite being on opposite sides of the Inazuman civil war.
  • Some fans ship Neuvillette and Zhongli, despite Neuvillette intending to put Zhongli on trial as an Archon and Zhongli deliberately avoiding him.
  • Some fans are fascinated by the manipulative past between Dottore and Scaramouche and how it may have changed after the latter became the Wanderer and swore to hunt him down for revenge.
  • Lyney/Wriothesley gained a small following after their confrontation in the Fortress of Meropide.
  • Many Yuri Fangirls love Arlecchino/Furina precisely because of the Fatui Harbinger's contempt and dominance over the Archon of her land of birth while Furina became so shaken up by their encounter that she'd rather not think about it, yet is compelled to regain control.
  • Dainsleif is popularly shipped with the ruler of the Abyss Order (mostly Lumine over Aether) due to their implied closeness in the past and possible lingering feelings of loyalty towards them despite having parted ways on bitter terms.

    Ghost Shipping
  • Guizhong with either Zhongli or Madam Ping, both of whom had been very close with her and still mourn her in the present time.
  • It's not unusual to see Kazuha shipped with his deceased friend (often named Tomo by fans) who was killed by the Raiden Shogun. The fact that Kazuha keeps his friend's Vision with him also helps, although he ends up leaving it on said friend's grave after successfully reawakening it and ending the Vision Hunt Decree.
  • Even if Focalors is technically still alive as Furina, there is a small following for Neuvillette/Focalors for those who headcanon Furina and Focalors as separate entities. It helps that Focalors acts more maturely than Furina, which some fans feel is a better fit for him than her (supposedly) histrionic human counterpart.
  • Occasionally Arlecchino is shipped with La Signora, though the only interaction Arlecchino has with her is expressing outrage towards Pucinella and Pantalone for holding themselves up in Snezhnaya while Signora died in the line of duty.
  • "The Song Burning in The Embers" animated short introduced Clervie as Arlecchino's (Peruere) late childhood Best Friend who inspired her to rebel against the previous Knave, kill her, and reform the House of the Hearth into something closer to the Orphanage of Love that Clervie dreamed of.

    Incest Yay Shipping
Per usual, two characters being related or in the same adoptive family doesn't stop some fans from shipping them together.
  • It's not unusual to see NSFW works of the twin protagonists being romantically paired with each other.
  • Diluc and Kaeya are adopted siblings that are not blood related and a popular ship, though Kaeya, who was adopted into Diluc's family, has left the family sometime before the events of the game. Whether you consider the "Incest" side of the ship as still applicable is very much subjective. Different sides of the fandom have gotten into heated arguments about this, and not helping is that Hoyoverse does not seem to have any plans to clear this up any time soon.
  • Occasionally, you may see Barbara shipped with her older sister Jean due to how the former looks up to the latter very much.
  • In Shenhe's character trailer, her interactions with Chongyun struck a chord with some fans. The revelation that Shenhe and Chongyun are aunt and nephew just made those fans more excited. Japanese fans are especially ecstatic with the ship due to the "onee-shota" (mature woman x young boy) dynamic, to the point where the term trended on Twitter after the trailer dropped.
  • Shenhe and Ganyu are Cloud Retainer's adoptive daughters, though they did not meet in person until after Interlude Chapter Act I. Their interactions during 4.4 Lantern Rite then sparked interest in them as a romantic couple.
  • Collei has been shipped with Tighnari or Cyno.
  • If not with the Traveler, Lyney can be shipped with Lynette or Freminet other due to their closeness and how protective Lyney over his siblings, or even Arlecchino.
  • After Arlecchino's animated short, "The Song Burning in the Embers" released, people were quick to ship her with her adoptive sister Clervie.

    Launchers of a Thousand Ships

    No Yay
  • It goes without saying that most people would recoil at the idea of pairing the Token Mini Moes (Paimon, Klee, Diona, Qiqi, Yaoyao, Sayu, Nahida, the Melusines) romantically due to their pedophilic overtones, and ships/sexual content involving them are often regarded as Squick material.
    • This hasn't stopped a minority of fans from shipping Nahida with the Wanderer, though Nahida is often given an Age Lift in such ship content. Canonically, both of them are around 500 years old with Nahida being slightly older than the Wanderer, and shippers enjoy their Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl dynamics.
    • Due to the Melusines' childlike bodies and behaviour and Neuvillette being their father figure, most are likely to see them as children, and are unnerved by the implications that Sigewinne is a Half-Human Hybrid to the point of Memetic Mutation. Sigewinne x Wriothesley shippers will however maintain that Sigewinne is a working adult of a non-human race with Abyssal origins that is long-lived and naturally short, assuming that Sigewinne is Older Than They Look and headcanon that she saw Wriothesley grow up. Canonically, they have an affable and close working relationship as co-overseers of the Fortress, with Sigewinne acting as Wriothesley's second in command.
  • A small number of fans may view the Traveler as a minor because of their youthfulness and thus find any ship of them with any adult or long-lived person to also be pedophilic, regardless of the fact that the Traveler had journeyed with their twin for an unknown length of time prior to landing in Teyvat and slept through the Cataclysm 500 years before the start of the game. Similarly, the Vague Age of some characters with the medium model (Furina and Lyney for example) has caused discourse over differing interpretations of whether they are of age.
  • Due to the trauma that Dottore inflicted on Collei, one would be hard pressed to find anyone giving their ship time of the day.
  • Pairing Hilichurls with any character has been especially made infamous by a Hentai about Yoimiya getting ambushed by Hilichurls and... well, it's been memed on ever since.

    One True Pairing
Even with the absence of any confirmation of romantic feelings, some ships are more popular or more widely accepted as possible canon pairings based on the amount of Ship Tease they receive in game.
  • Beidou x Ningguang is by far the most popular Liyue ship due to their Like an Old Married Couple dynamic and the occasional implied Sexual Euphemism when speaking of or to each other.
  • Alhaitham x Kaveh's Belligerent Sexual Tension tends to be a Everyone Can See It situation, especially since the game goes to great lengths to demonstrate that both men deeply care for each other, and neither of them can stop bringing up the other.
  • Cyno x Tighnari are often depicted Like an Old Married Couple who have a wholesome relationship, banter over Cyno’s lame puns and both act as surrogate parents for Collei.

    One True Threesome
What's an option to keep the Ship To Ship Combats at peace? By shipping all of them together, of course!
  • Chongyun/Xingqiu shippers tend to consider the following options:
  • In the same manner, Razor/Bennett can also include Fischl and/or Mona.
  • Tartaglia usually has some popular combinations:
    • Zhongli and Neuvillette as Tartaglia's "dragon boyfriends".
    • Neuvillette and Wriothesley, the latter because Childe would presumably be very interested in fighting the visibly battle scarred Duke to test his strength, though it doesn't come up in the Archon Quest.
  • Beidou/Ningguang shippers also add Yelan to their relationship. One of the dialogues of the Lantern Rite 2022 is a dialogue between Beidou and Ningguang debating about inviting Yelan to a trip to "mix things up".
  • Keqing/Ganyu/Shenhe. Keqing already has a close relationship with Ganyu, while Shenhe bonded with Ganyu through their shared upbringing as Cloud Retainer's apprentices.
  • Itto/Ayato/Thoma, as all possible combinations have sizable shippers.
  • The 4ggravate group of friends of Cyno/Tighnari/Alhaitham/Kaveh have different dynamics between each other and get along generally well (except for obviously Alhaitham and Kaveh). For extra Adaptational Angst Upgrade, shippers may throw in Dottore as the villain which the Sumeru boys must overcome with a Battle of Wits.
  • Xiao/Traveler/Lyney gained traction among Xiao/Traveler fans after the release of the magician due to his flirtatious manners contrasting with Xiao's Defrosting Ice King demeanor.

    Preemptive Shipping
  • Upon entering new regions in Teyvat, shippers may pair characters that use models of similar height before even knowing their dynamic. This is exemplified with Fontaine, as the pairings Neuvilette/Wriothesley and Clorinde/Navia gained traction based on their designs alone.
  • Right after all the Harbingers debuted as a group in the A Winter Night's Lazzo trailer, despite little detailed information available about their individual dynamics or personalities, Arlecchino was most popularly shipped with Columbina due to their real-life counterparts being a couple, as well as the other female Harbingers to a lesser extent. Dottore is also commonly shipped with Pantalone as their real-life counterparts are character Foils, and the Wanderer's voice line about Pantalone's "choice of partner" and him working closely to the Doctor added fuel to the fire.
  • After Sethos is revealed as a secondary character in Cyno's second Story Quest, some fans speculate that Sethos will be an alternate ship for Cyno to Tighnari. This is more fueled by details of his character design [[{foil} that compliment Cyno]] (opposite eye colors, clothing style), his implied rivalry in the trailer, and his name being a covert pun of another Yu-Gi-Oh! referencenote

Ships that Pass in the Night
Just because two or more playable characters don't interact with each other, that's not gonna stop players from shipping them together. Of course, these may change since miHoYo plans on releasing regular story updates:
  • Zhongli and Ningguang have a small but dedicated following due to the potential they could have if they had actual interactions, and mainly because their designs go well together. Because Zhongli is Money Dumb, the shippers suggest that he could always go to Ningguang for assistance on how to raise and spend money without becoming flat broke. Them both also being Geo users has added a bit to interest in the ship. That said, the most "interaction" the two have had are the obligatory voiced-lines (from the story and their playable units) they have about each other, none of which suggest they have any sort of deeper connection. Not that that stops the shippers, of course.
  • Barbara and Xinyan have a small following due to the both of them being well-known musicians.note
  • As a result of both Mona and Zhongli being joked as the poorest characters in Genshin Impact, some fans also thought of shipping them together because of that similarity alone. Compared to Zhongli and Ningguang above, he and Mona don't even have voice-overs for each other.
  • Kaeya is at times shipped with Childe because they're both popular Bishounen and their snarky personalities would make for some chemistry and interesting banter. They don’t interact in canon or acknowledge each other through their voice-lines, however. Part of it also derives from admittedly-still-very-debatable theories about Kaeya, the most curious of which is a detail in his Talent that brings up the Abyss.
  • While it usually isn't romantic, many fanarts have Qiqi be paired with Ganyu, due to the whole "Cocogoat" joke.note  The fact they both have Cryo Visions, matching color schemes, and have a connection through the Adepti also might have something to do with it. They never meet each other in-story, although - possibly as a Fandom Nod - Qiqi does eventually appear in Ganyu's preview trailer.
  • Many Sword Art Online fans who play Genshin Impact tend to pair Xiao and Kazuha together, despite the two never meeting or even having a voice-lines about the other, due to how their respective Japanese voice actors, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Nobunaga Shimazaki, voiced Kirito and Eugeo in the Alicization anime adaptation, who themselves were subjected to quite a bit of Ho Yay.
  • Soon after Yelan was revealed, people began to ship her with Shenhe due to Shenhe being the next most recent Liyue 5-star, both of them being highly attractive ladies, and the aesthetic similarities between them and the often-shipped Xingqiu and Chongyun. Come Yelan's release, she ended up having no connections with or voicelines about Shenhe at all.
  • Neither Cyno nor Nilou have any direct interactions with each other, though Nilou does talk about the former in one of her voicelines (though not vice-versa). But nonetheless, they have quite a dedicated following, with fan art of the two of them together being posted on social media even before their banners were released.
  • While it's on the rarer side compared to the above-listed pairings, some shippers have taken to pairing Lisa up with Alhaitham due to the similarities in their characterization.
  • Some (often female) fans who are tired of the memes of Ayaka and Nilou being rivals in Aether's harem have shipped them out of spite, despite both girls never encountering each other in canon. As the both of them are Dance Battlers, it is common to find fan art of them dancing together.
  • Despite them being from different nations, Venti x Furina has gotten a following, believing that Venti’s carefree personality and Furina’s dramatic behavior can be fun and entertaining. There's also the fact that Venti's job as a bard, and Furina's desire to be entertained could make for an interesting dynamic.
  • Another rare ship is Alhaitham and Layla. While Layla is aware of Alhaitham (as seen in her About: Alhaitham voice-line), the only interaction they have is Alhaitham providing commentary on Layla during the A Parade of Providence event, but that is only due to his role as a commentator. Otherwise, Alhaitham doesn't seem very aware of Layla, not even having an About voice-line for her. Even so, they still have a small following among fans.
  • Gaming gained several ships immediately upon his reveal. Some Chongyun/Xingqiu shippers created a Love Triangle with him, some paired him with Yun Jin due to their shared interest in traditional Liyue performing arts, and he brings a warm and firery contrast to the cold and shy Freminet... in all cases, Gaming has yet to interact with either them as a friend.
  • Bennett is either paired romantically with Xiangling or included in her friend group with Chongyun and Xingqiu despite not having a single interaction with any of them nor do any similarities to connect. This is due to the popular National Team compositions for the Spiral Abyss, one of which happens to include all the characters in this entry.
  • Freminet/Collei gained a following based on their numerous similarities in backstory and personality yet wildly different present circumstances.
  • Because of their similar temperaments, Alhaitham and Scaramouche/Wanderer have a small but devoted fanbase when their closest interaction is their implied off-screen cooperation when investigating the truth behind Sachin's intentions with donating the Diadem of Knowledge as the prize for the Interdarshan Championship during the 3.6 "A Parade of Providence" event.

    Ship-to-Ship Combat
Due in part to the game's popularity and the communities extensive reach, the western end of the fandom has become particularly infamous for its infighting concerning ships:
  • Zhongli/Childe and Childe/Lumine shippers tend to be at each other's throats due to both of these ships being the most popular options for Childe. Not helping matters, an early mistranslation labeling Childe as a teenager added fuel to the fire, with Childe/Lumine claiming that the relationship between Zhongli, who is thousands of years old, and Childe is problematic (this was before it became widely known that the Traveler is also hundreds of years old). Following the backlash, the western branch of Hoyoverse corrected the mistake, though there are still times when both sides find reasons to attack each other for simply shipping one or the other pairing or to declare their preferred ships' superiority.
  • With the Inazuma update, arguments began popping up between Noelle/Traveler and Ayaka/Traveler shippers due to the heavy romantic themes of both characters' story quests. Naturally, this led to arguments over which girl was the Traveler's "canon" love interest. These usually revolve around where Noelle's multi-route hangout event stands canonically compared to Ayaka's story quest, which is part of the main questline.
  • Fans of Raiden/Yae got into a fight with Ayato/Yae shippers over which ship had more chemistry. Raiden/Yae shippers liked the close relationship and care the two showed for each other, while Ayato/Yae fans argued that Ayato's ability to one-up the cunning fox made their dynamic much more interesting.
  • Diluc/Kaeya shippers and Albedo/Kaeya shippers generally dislike one another. Diluc/Kaeya shippers complained that the opposing ship's apparent age gap was problematic (due to Albedo having a short male model), while Albedo/Kaeya shippers fired back by saying their ship was incestuous (due to a supposedly faulty English translation).
  • The popularity of Neuvillette/Furina skyrocketed after the conclusion of Chapter IV Act V which provided lots of material in-game and other official/sponsored media that could be interpreted as supportive of the ship. Of course, this upset the Neuvillette/Navia fans and the same-sex shippers like Wriothesley/Neuvillette, Arlecchino/Furina, and even some Furina/Traveler shippers. Any discussions between the opposing ships usually lead to an age gap and power discussion discourse, accusations of Neuvillette/Furina being an incestuous pairing (due to interpretations of Furina and Neuvillette having a father-daughter/sibling relationship based on her short female model and relative immaturity), and in extreme cases, resorting to butting heads and personal attacks.
  • Shipping Alhaitham or Kaveh with anyone else will have rabid Alhaitham/Kaveh shippers, who find the idea of people wanting to see them romantically involved with anyone else unfathomable, go out of their way to harass those who don't. God forbid pairing them with women as accusations of homophobia and/or gay erasure will be thrown around by said shippers.

    Ship Mates
  • Due to these pairs being extremely popular go-to Ho Yay pairings for the fandom, it's not uncommon to see same-sex shippers shipping Childe/Zhongli, Xingqiu/Chongyun and Kaeya/Diluc.
  • In a minor scale, Diluc/Jean shippers often pair Kaeya/Rosaria.
  • In Sumeru, the Cyno/Tighnari shippers get along with the Alhaitham/Kaveh fans.
  • From Fontaine, Navia/Clorinde shippers normally pair Neuvillette/Wriothesley. For the straight shippers, both Neuvillette/Furina and Neuvillette/Navia shippers get along with Wriothesley/Clorinde shippers.
  • Zhongli/Guizhong shippers immediately got along with Neuvillette/Focalors (instead of Furina) shippers as both sides have a similar dynamic. For those not interested in Ghost Shipping, Zhongli/Hu Tao shippers also tend to get along with Neuvillette/Furina shippers for the same reason.
  • The "Team Rocket" Shippers often pair Kaeya/Rosaria (with Diona as their pet) and Ayato/Yae Miko (with Kirara or Sayu as the pet).
