Sandbox / Web Animation RWBY Clean Up

Go To

Stemming from this ATT discussion, there is a feeling that the RWBY pages could use a co-ordinated clean-up. While a lot of work has been done in the past, there are still outstanding issues that often don't make it through existing clean-up threads because it's a niche show that not everyone is familiar with.

Given that the work also attracts Edit War issues when misuse clean-ups are attempted (which has led to the long-term locking of the NightmareFuel.RWBY page) and shipping clean-ups are attempted (which has led to the long-term locking of the Characters.RWBY Team RWBY page), it looks like making a short-term project to organise and formalise this might be the way to go.

Short-Term Project Thread.

Issues Identified:

If a page is identified has having issues, it can be assigned to one of the sections based on the scale of work it will need:
  • No issues: move them to the No Issues folder.
  • Minor issues: Clean and then move them to the Completed folder (these could be quick wins).
  • Extensive issues: Add to Extensive Issues folder (these will require more effort to clean).

Extensive Issues

These are large and persistent issues on the RWBY pages, which may need extensive or time-consuming clean-up:

    Extensive Issues

General Issues:

  • Complaining: Complaining issues on any pages need to be cleaned up. It was added to the Complaining clean-up thread's project page for problematic works.
  • Crosswicking: Limited Character page crosswicking occurs. A lot of the troping that occurs on the RWBY Character pages, doesn't get crosswicked.
  • Wall of Text: Character Pages and some of the sub-pages suffer from this.

Complicated Issues:

  • Recap.RWBY: Many of the Recap pages had their images (and sometimes page quotes/image quotes) changed without going through Image Pickin'. Many of the changes also resulted in poor-quality replacements. It's so extensive, there may need to be a mini "RWBY Recap Image Pickin'" thread to resolve it, as doing individual threads for each image would clog up the forum. I'm putting together a list of the affected pages, original images and replacement images. In addition, episode-specific tropes that are on other pages (for example, the work and character pages) should be transferred to the recap pages to avoid potential duplication.

Straight Clean-Up Issues:

  • Currently clear of issues.

Minor Issues

These issues probably don't need extensive issues to fix. They can be cleaned relatively quickly.

    Minor Issues

Trope Clean-Ups

As a result of clean-up threads elsewhere, it's possible that certain entries may need cleaning up to meet the new requirements of that trope (be it redefinition, disambiguation, changing in sub-trope/super-trope status, misuse clean-up, etc.). While the clean-up threads will likely catch most of this, there may be complicated examples. List any such issues here.

Pages With No Known Issues:

These pages have either been cleaned of issues, or haven't attracted any problems yet. If any problems are spotted, please move them to one of the folders above, with a note about what's wrong.

No Issues

These pages don't need to be a part of the short-term clean-up project.

     No Issues

Completed Clean-Up

These pages have been cleaned and no longer have issues for now.

    Completed Clean-Up
  • Analysis.RWBY: The page states to avoid speculation. A quick glance through the page shows a lot of speculation and fanon, however. Clean-up report here.
  • DrinkingGame.RWBY: There was some complaining and duplication removed from the page. See the Drinking Game clean-up thread, here and here.
  • FandomSpecificPlot.RWBY: this is supposed to be for the fanfic plots that become really bedded into a fandom because the nature of the work lends itself to that kind of plot. However, it seems to be trying to capture every fanfic idea that occurs. There's no clear way to assess what does and does not fall within scope; so this is best left to individual occasions something needs to be questioned on the Is This An Example? thread.
  • Fanon.RWBY: This page seems to record every little thought, speculation and fanfic idea the fandom's ever had. Fanon is supposed to be for something that becomes the widespread explanation within the fandom to explain gaps that occur in the Canon. The scale and limits of Fanon means there's no easy way to identify what does and doesn't count, except to address any questionable individual entries via the Is This An Example? thread.
  • Fridge.RWBY. This has two sub-pages, FridgeBrilliance.RWBY and FridgeHorror.RWBY. A quick glance shows content on the pages that isn't fridge, or which got added prematurely (being confirmed canon later on, but the entries weren't removed). There is no easy way to clean up this, given that the definition of Fridge is questionable, and the clean-up threads don't really know how to address this. It's best to leave this to the Fridge clean-up threads.
  • Hate Sink: entries need to be cleaned into sub-trope/super-trope categories as per the clean-up thread. No issues found. See report here.
  • Headscratchers.RWBY. A quick glance shows some problems with conversation, but this looks like it may have had a tidy up in the past, so it hopefully shouldn't have many issues. It Just Bugs Me misuse can be addressed in the Headscratchers clean-up thread.
  • HoYay.RWBY: There is a Ho Yay clean-up thread, and this page does need a clean-up in line with the terms of that clean-up thread. A start was made a while back, but fell through in January 2021. The sandbox still exists, containing entries that went through the Ho Yay thread (RWBY/Weiss Volumes 1-3 was the only section completed), but it would probably be best to start from scratch: Ho Yay RWBY Clean-up report here.
  • MisaimedFandom.RWBY: This is a short page with only five (wall of text) entries. However, all five have problems: complaining and a sub-bullet with more complaining; a potential non-example; a Base-Breaking Character entry; an Unintentionally Sympathetic entry (already troped as such on the YMMV page), and a legitimate Broken Base entry (already troped as such). This could end up being a page that needs to be cut. Started here, and involved a ban evader clean-up. Four examples have been rewritten and merged back into the YMMV and Misaimed Fandom pages. See here and here.
  • Moments Pages Clean-Up (Awesome.RWBY, AwesomeMusic.RWBY, Funny.RWBY, Heartwarming.RWBY, TearJerker.RWBY): There is an existing clean-up thread for Moments pages, so clean-up needs to be in line with the terms of that thread. The RWBY pages have the same problems that required the NightmareFuel.RWBY page be cleaned up. The pages are treated like Recap pages, with each episode being automatically listed and then a list of 'Moment X' occurrences in that episode being added. In other words, the entries are not audience reactions. Instead, they consist of scene summaries, character reactions, gushing, speculation, fridge, complaining, etc. The misuse needs to be removed from the page and the salvageable examples rewritten as audience reactions. This is pretty much able to be managed through the Moments clean-up threads now.
  • Sandbox.RWBY Team RWBY: This was created by Septimus Heap in response to a troper request on the Edit Locked Pages thread to do a general update of the page as it had become outdated. The Sandbox is up-to-date (but could be swept for Wall of Text issues first), but remains open, with no apparently impetus to take it back to the mods to get it swapped into the live page. It therefore feels like it's circumventing the lock at this point. It needs to be swapped back in and closed down (or an argument made that the live page be unlocked after the swap since the Sandbox hasn't attracted any ship-related edit warring). Team RWBY was split into four individual character pages by the Character-Specific Page Clean-up thread. See here, here, and here.
  • ShipTease.RWBY: This page had a clean-up a while back, so it's main problem is Wall of Text. I think the entries are as short as they can get without skipping genuine examples. I put the report here.
  • Trivia.RWBY: This page has attracted complaining in the past, as well as a need to collect every little thing the creators say, which has led to bloat in places. Probably one of the more minor page issues, however. There are no real issues here to clean up.
  • VideoExamples.RWBY: Anything that runs afoul of the video quality control and moderation threads. RWBY videos can have issues with length, trope misuse and spoiler information. The original lists that needed cleaning were reported here and here. They were taken to the Video Moderation Thread here and here.
  • WhatCouldHaveBeen.RWBY: Absolutely everything the creators tell us seems to end up on this page, basically making it a list of every brainstorming or draft idea that ever crossed their minds before they settled on the final product. Possibly a problem with What Could Have Been not being designed to cope with works that have accessible, chatty creators. It therefore needs looking at to see whether it's in danger of degrading the purpose of the trope. This could either be a very small issue (if the decision is that the trope just isn't designed to cope with this scenario, so there's nothing to be done), or a very large issue (if a lot of it is seen as misuse). There's no way to define the limits of the trope's scope, so it's too difficult to say what does and doesn't count.
  • WMG.RWBY: Per the clean-up thread, WMG shouldn't contain: debates (discussions are fine, arguments are not); stealth complaining/creator bashing; NSFW entries; trolling or out-of-context memes. I don't think there are many issues here, so it should be a quick win. There's a WMG clean-up page. If anything does crop up, it can go through that thread. There's nothing major to clean.
  • Woobie.RWBY: The entries have been cleaned up in the past, so the only issue with them is Wall of Text (all of them are very long). However, there is an indexing problem with this page that needs a resolution: all the woobie tropes are listed on the one page, meaning Iron Woobie (4 examples), Jerkass Woobie (2 examples) and Stoic Woobie (1 example) entries are falling under Woobie — if you go to one of the other Woobie pages, there's nothing to tell you a RWBY Woobie page exists for those examples. The Woobie entries were split out to their proper locations as per this ATT thread.
  • YMMV.RWBY: Only minor issues here. There are some Wall of Text issues, and the entries for three audience reactions have been flagged for containing potential misuse, but remain unresolved: They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character, They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot, and What an Idiot! (Resolved here).
