Sandbox / Hey The Wick Check Fainted

Go To

It's uncommon for a wiki page to faint, but the Fainting page is trying so hard to cover too many bases, poor dear.

The page, at it's peak, had a 9-way softsplit. The tropes Fake Faint and Faint in Shock have been spun off, but it's not clear exactly how the rest of the examples are being used on the wiki.

Notes:

  • If you run into references to "Monster" or "Girly Man", these should be put in the "Faint In Shock" folder. We do expect a lot of instances of Faint in Shock, as only on-page examples were transferred - we haven't done a Wick Clean yet.
  • Please use numbered bullets (#) in the folders, to make verifying counts easier.
  • Please include the entire example text, not just the work/page that it comes from.
  • If a wick is a pothole, please put a bold note after the example, and bold the pothole text.

Looking for at least 50 wicks, may check more if the check is dominated by Faint in Shock, Fake Faint, or ZCE.

Faint In Shock (Will need to be moved when we clean wicks)
  1. Anime. The Story Of Pollyanna Girl Of Love: Polly has a tendency to react this way whenever something shocking occurs. A bit of an Exaggerated Trope, given that it happens four times.
  2. Characters.Codex Equus Draconic Pantheon: (Blacktip) He promptly fainted upon learning he became the student of the ancient Ryujin, Prince Arcaniss, who is famously regarded as The Paragon among Dragonkind for his nobility and heroism.
  3. Characters.Codex Equus Federal Republic Of Ponyland: Outliving One's Offspring: Zigzagged. Due to living in poverty, Copper Wheel and Sunny Love were expecting to have only one foal when they decided to settle down, but Sunny Love unexpectedly became pregnant with identical twin colts. Unfortunately, the elder twin, Bossa Nova, was stillborn, which left them understandably affected and earned them the scorn of their wealthier neighbors who looked down on them for being poor, enraging Copper Wheel into getting in a fight with one of said neighbors once. Blue would end up outliving both parents after Sunny Love suddenly contracted a terminal illness and died while he was serving in the military during the "Second Great War" event, with Copper Wheel following some years later, sending Blue on a slow emotional decline that led to him suffering from depression and self-destructive habits, such as stress-eating. Luckily, Luminiferous was able to cheer him up with a "pep-talk", but his experiences made him greatly sympathetic towards those who had lost beloved family members of their own, such as Prince Written Word and Miracle Hymn. In an ironic twist, Bossa Nova himself continued to keep on "living" long after his premature death, something that surprised both his parents and especially his brother (who fainted from the shock of discovering this). It's noted in Bossa Nova's entry that his entire biological family was extremely proud of him when he managed to Ascend and become a Death god through doing various good deeds. pothole

While cleaning the pool in a Hazmat Suit, Carl finds the candy bar and eats it. Smails's wife takes this the wrong way. Of course, given that the candy bar had been floating in chlorinated water, it might not have been safe to eat anyway. —sinkhole

  40. Red Dwarf Season VII "Epideme": The Cat's reaction to Kochanski cutting off "her" arm. He points incredulously then keels over, and is left lying on the floor still frozen in that position.
  41. Recap.Star Trek Deep Space Nine S 03 E 16 Prophet Motive: The revised Rules of Acquisition very nearly make Quark do this. When he hears number 285 ("A good deed is its own reward") he has a severe attack of the vapors and has to sit down while fanning himself.

  45. Webcomic.ISO: Not So Stoic: Cody, despite trying to be a stoic tough guy, is incredibly easy to rattle. One of the earliest examples of this is him falling back against the alley wall at the start of issue 2, when he realizes what Doug spilling his drink tray for him means. The fact he actually does faint after finally asking Doug out one issue later is an even stronger example. potholes
  46. Webcomic. Two Kinds: As of May 16th, 2013, she's finally told him, and Trace's reaction was... well:

Naturally Lupin teases her from time to time about it, and Zenigata used it against her on one occasion to get information out of her.     Fake Faint - trying to trick someone into thinking you've fainted.
  1. Recap.Fraggle Rock S 3 E 17 Bored Stiff: Junior pretends to do this to convince his parents he's bored stiff. It becomes real when he lands too near the juice-drenched flower and gets a whiff. Note: it refers to the boredom, as it's boredom juice.

    Faint from exhaustion/overexertion
  1. Characters.Ophelia: Near the ending, she collapses from exhaustion as she walks into a convent, with a nun rushing forward to catch her and help her inside. She'd been travelling for days, possibly weeks, and recovering from the effects of snake venom, on top of going through the emotional wringer, so it's unsurprising she needs a break once she's safe. Plus, she may be in the early stages of pregnancy.
  2. Film.Carry On Cruising: Flo faints after a workout session with Mr. Jenkins. split example — other half under Faint In Shock

Ehh... What's the connection? Questioning if this is an example at all...
  7. Tearjerker.Fan Works: Blood & Sweat is about Lincoln neglecting eating and his social life in favor of overexercising in an attempt to get his body into better shape, leading to his health deteriorating and developing a bad limp in his right leg (also Nightmare Fuel). Lynn and Luna's reactions to all this (as they're the only ones who notice what's going on until things start to get really bad) is also heartbreaking, especially when they confront him for sneaking out at night to go on yet another run and desperately attempt to convince him that his workout routine isn't healthy at all, to no avail as he tries to do it again the next night. Then when Lynn catches him and they get into a fight, she freaks out when Lincoln suddenly faints with blood coming out of his mouth; he has to be rushed to the hospital as a result, and the whole Loud family spends the time that he's unconscious out of their minds with worry. When Lincoln wakes up and finally realizes how much damage he's been doing to his body, he confesses that he drove himself to such lengths because he thought Lynn was ashamed of him for not being as fit or into sports as she is, to her clear horror. —pothole

    Blackout due to injury

  2. Webcomic.Sweet Home 2017: Deadly Nosebleed/Fainting: The first and most obvious symptom of monsterization is a nosebleed, usually followed by the victim passing out. I think it goes here...

    Pregnancy Faint

    Other
  1. Advertising.Claude The Cat: Claude's owner passes out once after installing his gas heater in his room. Presumably asphyxiation due to gas displacing the air due to a fitting leak. Less likely to be Carbon Monoxide poisoning due to incomplete combustion or Oxygen Depletion due to venting directly into the space.
  2. Recap.Star Trek Voyager S 1 E 13 Faces: When Human!Torres meets her Klingon half, she passes out, as much from fatigue as disbelief. Klingon!Torres just lets her counterpart fall onto her shoulder and carries her off. Combo/open to interpretation
  3. Recap.Supernatural S 08 E 21 The Great Escapist: Heroic RRoD: Sam collapses from the transformations he has undergone by completing the first two trials and being so near the source of God's Word. pothole - redundant with the trope in use here.
  4. Series.Meet The Browns: The Colonel has a heart attack and faints during he and Edna's first wedding. This could be considered an example of Truth in Television, as although it is not always common, sometimes people do faint when they have heart attacks because of lack of blood flow to the brain. Acute medical emergency
  5. VisualNovel.Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: A lot of the mysteries depend on a witness being out cold at a crucial moment and missing a key detail. For example, Maggey fainted out of shock and kid Edgeworth was oxygen-deprived while Ron DeLite got a Tap on the Head. —multiple causes
  6. WebAnimation.Overly Sarcastic Productions:
    • Dante does this a lot in The Divine Comedy. Red lampshades it, noting that for a protagonist — and a self-insert one, at that — Dante is kind of a wimp.
    • Robert Olmstead passes out from seeing dozens of fish people in The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
Actual misuse! These tropes are appearing in media that they are discussing, not in their own show!
    ZCE/Unclear
  1. Nanaka 6/17: In the work summary: Nenji decides he's had enough with Nanaka's nagging, and tells her to sod off. She doesn't take the news well. After Fainting dramatically, she falls down a flight of stairs, hits her head violently on the pavement, and has to be taken to the hospital. There, it appears that she has complete amnesia from age 6 and upwards, ending up with the personality she had when she was 6. There's no telling when she will be back to normal, if ever... Unclear if Faint in Shock or if she's being a bit of a drama queen, and overacting turns into a real fall.
  2. Characters.Capitol Critters: entry under Women Prefer Strong Men: This trope is strongly implied by her reaction to Max killing President Cat.
    Max: "I... I killed him."
    Miko: "You were so brave!"
Max: (faints) —-Potholed possibly Faint in Shock.
  3. Characters.Twitch Plays Pokemon Emerald: The Casanova: Quite a few female Pokemon are drawn to his presence.

  6. Fanfic. The Lion King Adventures: Sarabi constantly faints whenever anyone says something in The Royal Challenge.
  7. Film.Chains: Rosa does this in court after lying on the witness stand and claiming that she was in fact having an affair with Emilio. Faint in Shock from the stress, or Fake Faint to sell the act?
  8. Funny. The Loud House: Clyde fainting after Lincoln's phone rant to Lori. Pothole
  9. Main.Medium Awareness: Must Love Ned Flanders: Naomi's aware she's in a "book" when she mentions her frequent fainting and one instance of being knocked out that she's probably "been unconscious for at least half this book." pothole
  10. Manga.Black Magic M 66: Paris faints at the most inconvenient times.
  11. Manhwa.Metal Heart: This happens to Nuri and Yura at one point.
  12. Recap.Party Of The Apocalypse Part 7: Felix does this when he sees what happened to Mitsuzane.
  13. Recap.Peeking Through The Fourth Wall Episode 23: Grammy shows the Louds a gif of a chimpanzee smelling its hand and fainting.
  14. Recap.Sponge Bob Square Pants S 2 E 6 Grandmas Kisses Squidville: You Need a Breath Mint: "FRIED OYSTER SKINS?! AAAAAHH! faints" — Pothole- presumably either Faint in Shock or just being dramatic
  15. Series. My Three Sons: Miss Pitts does this after mistakenly believing Chip beat his grandfather's dead body.
  16. Series.Para Pencari Tuhan: When Kalila just knew that Azam and Aya are going to get married by looking at a wedding invitation.
    • Also Udin when Kalila rejects his marriage proposal Probably Faint Inshock for both, but not clear...
