Lan Qiren and Lan Wangji observe that some students have been behaving strangely lately, and suspect that Wei Wuxian has something to do with it.
- Balloon Belly: Downplayed. Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang, and a few Lan disciples become comically round and plump thanks to the Loophole Abuse of the rule to not eat more than three bowls of rice per day. In fact, they become so fat that they can't bow to someone without 1) tearing the sash of their robes, 2) struggling to get up and stand still after a few seconds, or 3) losing their balance when they get a slight shove.
- Exact Words: Wei Wuxian is able to skirt around some of the Lan Clan's rules by taking advantage of how some of the rules are phrased (for example the rules say to eat no more than three bowls of food per day but don't specify the size limit).
- Loophole Abuse: This episode is all about the disciples in the Cloud Recesses circumventing around the strict rules of the Lan Clan, thanks to Wei Wuxian's suggestions.
- No eating more than three bowls a day? No one said anything about how much food you can put in one bowl or how big the bowl itself could be.
- No killing animals in the Cloud Recesses? Then hunt outside the Cloud Recesses. Wei Wuxian even smugly points out that there's a stone that serves as the border between the Cloud Recesses and the grounds outside the area.
- No entering or leaving the Cloud Recesses past curfew by jumping over the wall? Jump over the door instead.
- Not So Above It All:
- While Jiang Cheng normally gets exasperated with Wei Wuxian's antics, the fact that he put on a lot of weight shows that even he can't resist the latter's idea of exploiting the amount of food one can eat in three bowls while they're living in the Cloud Recesses.
- Despite the Lan Clan's strict adherence to their rules, some Lan disciples follow Wei Wuxian's lead in getting around the rules and even comment on how his manual was of big help.
- Puppy-Dog Eyes: Wei Wuxian puts on an innocent and piteous expression when he tells Lan Wangji that he's still eating his first bowl of rice today and proceeds to show his giant serving of food.
- Rules Lawyer: Wei Wuxian uses his knowledge of the Cloud Recesses' 4000 rules by applying Loophole Abuse to get away with things. Whenever Lan Wangji tries to scold him for breaking a rule, Wei Wuxian quickly points out that he technically hasn't broken any rule, and the former has no choice but to let him be.
- Say My Name: Lan Qiren screams out Wei Wuxian's birth name in rage after reading the manual the latter wrote about taking advantage of the loopholes of the Lan Clan's rules.
- Staircase Tumble: Two Lan clansmen (who have gotten plump) bounce down the stairs when a fellow clansman accidentally bumps into them.
- Title Drop: "How to Survive in the Cloud Recesses" is the name of Wei Wuxian's rule-circumventing manual. It gets name-dropped when the Lan clansmen bring it up in a conversation, and the cover is shown onscreen when Lan Qiren reads the manual.
