It's the day of the Hungry Ghost Festival. As Jin Ling sends out a lantern for his deceased parents, Wei Wuxian is forlorn that no one sent him anything while he was dead.
- Apology Gift: Lan Wangji giving Wei Wuxian a lantern (and then a bunch of other gifts the latter wishes for) is hinted to be his away of apologising for not sending any offerings during the 13 years his companion was away.
- Burning with Anger: Jin Ling flames up out of annoyance when he overhears Wei Wuxian mocking people for believing the dead can receive messages.
- Cross-Popping Veins: Cartoonish veins pop up on an irritated Jin Ling's head while he yells at Wei Wuxian for belittling the lantern tradition.
- Due to the Dead: The episode focuses on the Hungry Ghost Festival (also known as the Zhongyuan Festival), an event where people pay their respects to the dead and send lanterns out so that their deceased loved ones can receive their messages. Jin Ling gets a lantern for his parents and mockingly suggests that Wei Wuxian received no offerings because no one wanted to waste their money on the notorious Yiling Patriarch.
- Harsh Word Impact: As Jin Ling hypothesises why Wei Wuxian didn't receive any offerings while he was dead, the latter gets hit multiple times by the phrases "no one sent you lanterns", "a waste of money" and "really a loser" popping up and crashing onto his head.
- Hypocritical Humour: Wei Wuxian mocks Jin Ling for believing in the Hungry Ghost Festival traditions, only to get excited when he receives a lantern from Lan Wangji and sends it out on the river. Jin Ling rubs it in his face.
- I Will Wait for You: The reason Lan Wangji didn't send any lanterns to Wei Wuxian during the 13 years he was gone? Because he never truly believed the latter was dead (or would at least stay dead) and decided to wait for him to come back instead.
