Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi argue that they don't easily get scared.
- By the Lights of Their Eyes: The junior disciples' eyes are still visible when they wander around in the dark.
- Faint in Shock: Jin Ling claims to have defeated a water ghost as a child. In reality, not only did he simply get entangled in sea weed, but he mistook it for a ghost and was so frightened that Jiang Cheng found him passed out.
- Foreshadowing: Jiang Cheng's unusual expression of approval in Jin Ling's story and Lan Sizhui's confused reaction to Lan Jingyi's story are good indicators that the two tweaked their accomplishments. Sure enough, it's revealed in the end that both teens lied about their supposed acts of bravery.
- Hypocritical Humour: Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi mock each other for being a scaredy-cat and deny that they themselves are quick to get frightened. A moment later they scream and hug each other after they mistake the sound of wind for a ghost.
- Inelegant Blubbering: Downplayed. A young Lan Jingyi was so traumatised from being sent to the mountains as punishment that he loudly sobbed while clinging to Lan Qiren's leg.
- Luminescent Blush: Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi turn beet-faced when they belatedly realize that they're holding on to the other for dear life after mistaking Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji for monsters. They do it again when their lies get exposed.
- Pass the Popcorn: While Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi brag about what they supposedly accomplished in their youth, Wei Wuxian just sits in the background while munching on some snacks.
- Security Cling: A terrified Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi immediately hug each other when they think they hear a ghost. They separate out of embarrassment as soon as they realize it.
