Amity and King compete against a new enemy in the Gland Prix: Eda and Angel make a promise.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Action Survivor: Hekapoo and her companion are seen trying to survive in some sort of destroyed building in another world.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Jacob Hopkins appears as a child during "Eda's Requiem" rather than an adult and before his debut in "Yesterday's Lie".
  • Affectionate Nickname: Tito calls Nina "Kitten", a name she seems to be fine with him using.
  • An Arm and a Leg: When Eda hallucinates Angel in Raine's place, she's missing an arm.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Donna Masterskull is this, apologizing before using a spell that ends up knocking Celine out of the race.
  • Attention Whore: Felicia and, in a gender-inverted case, McScream both try to keep people's attention on them to the point of bordering on having It's All About Me mentalities. Felicity forces her daughter to stay by her side to boost her ratings while McScream tries to get people to focus on him.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Three cases: Belos manages to kill and/or capture most of the resistance against him, the Inner Demon captures Raine with the intention of using them as leverage, and Emily wins the Gland Prix and uses her interview to declare war on Hexside.
  • Badass Biker: After reading a book she got from Gus on human motor travel, Amity creates a motorcycle from abomination goo and sports an outfit to complete the look. She does it to cheer Luz up about not having a staff by giving her a ride.
  • Berserk Button: Like Gus, Cain doesn't take it lightly if someone speaks ill will of his mother.
  • Bookends:
    • Like the last chapter, the first and last scenes are set during Eda's first time on Earth.
    • The last chapter started with Eda entering the human realm and this chapter ends with her going back to the demon realm, albeit with Angel.
  • Break Them by Talking: Emily taunts Amity during the race by bringing up how she disowned her family. Amity's well aware of what she's doing and King shoots a plant glyph at Emily to shut her up.
  • Call-Back:
    • Emily admits to vandalizing the Owl House with Stella to Luz, Amity and King.
    • The Boiling Zit incident is brought up again. Only this time, a victim who was cursed is the focus instead of Luz.
    • Just before the attack on the BAT's at the tavern, Shawm reminds Goonla that he's back to fulfill the threat he made in "Socket to Me".
  • The Cameo:
    • A young Jacob Hopkins appears in a flashback set in Gravesfield, seeing Eda's ears and confusing her for a Martian.
    • Severine is shown as part of Graye's group when they ambush Lilith and the other rebels.
    • Vee and the Greater Basilisk are shown being experimented on and tortured in a flashback.
    • Abigail spies on Eda and Angel as Eda agrees to take Angel to the Demon Realm before leaving the scene.
    • Geist, Edric, and Emira watch Witch Rick getting arrested.
    • Mattholomule, Bo and Eileen appear with Gus watching the race at Eileen's house. Willow is later shown watching Emily's declaration of war on Hexside with Gus.
    • Hunter shows up to question Ludo again only for Belos to arrive and explain Ludo was moved.
    • Eyepatch is seen in prison asking Witch Rick what he's in for.
  • Continuity Nod: Amity wears the pink jacket she got from Luz's closet in "Blindsided" again as part of her Badass Biker outfit. She also uses her abomination suit in her fight against Darius.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death:
    • Seaweed gets shot in the head and his body falls into the Boiling Sea.
    • Darius appears to have been torn apart limb from limb, stains of blood, and abomination goo all over the spot where he was murdered.
  • Darkest Hour/Downer Ending: The BAT's are basically eradicated, Raine's taken prisoner by the Inner Demon, Rick's probably looking at a Fate Worse than Death, Darius appeared to have been Killed Off for Real, the Owl House crew has to take in Levi's unhatched sister and Glandus High just declared all-out war on Hexside.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Continuing from the last past, Eda's the central focus.
  • Death Glare: Emily fired one at Eda that no one notices.
  • Despair Event Horizon: No one in the Owl House is in high spirits after being forced to forfeit the Gland Prix and learning most of the rebellion has been slaughtered or arrested.
  • Dramatic Drop: Boscha does this with her drink after seeing Emily's declaration of war.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Abigail had been listening in on Eda and Angel in the abandoned house after Eda told Angel she was a witch. After Angel gets Eda to agree to let her live in the Demon Realm, Abigail takes her leave.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Several members of the Bards Against the Throne are murdered by the coven heads during the surprise attack.
  • Flashback B-Plot: Like the previous chapter, this chapter has flashbacks to Eda's friendship with Angel.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Emily glares at Eda before the race instead of Luz. As she later reveals, it's not Luz she has a problem with; it's Eda for giving her the boiling zit curse.
    • While trying to calm down Simon, Cain says they aren't supposed to fight... yet. This hints at the future war between their schools.
    • Upon capturing Perry, Terra states that it's nice to finally meet him.
  • Freudian Excuse: The reason for Emily's grudge against the Clawthornes and wild witches in general is because she was one of the victims Eda gave the boiling zit curse to nine years ago. While she was suffering from the curse, her parents abandoned her.
  • Freudian Slip: Similar to how she once called Lilith "mom" by accident, here Amity repeats the slip-up by calling Eda "mom" as well.
  • Given Name Reveal: Eda's vampire ex-girlfriend is known as Lady Clawdea.
  • The Ghost: Simon and Cain's mother, father, and other sibling Beck are mentioned.
  • Hope Spot: Eda manages to buy Perry enough time to escape. When he makes it back home, however, he finds Terra waiting for him.
  • Immediate Sequel: Following the first flashback, things pick up from when Eda wakes up and sees she and Raine dozed off.
  • In Spite of a Nail: The BATT's get sent to the Conformatorium, Raine stays behind to buy Eda time, Gavin races in the Gland Prix, King and his partner don't finish in first and a Glandus student still wins the race.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Luz, Amity and King meet Emily and Stella, the same girls who vandalized their home.
    • Emily reveals to everyone watching her interview that Luz was the main casualty of the Boiling Zit incident, including Camila.
  • It's All About Me:
    • Felicity, as always, does whatever it takes to get high ratings, forcing Felicia to stay by her side instead of seeing her friends from her old school and ordering her to send her ghost after Luz, Amity and King when they leave the race.
    • McScream makes several attempts to get people to focus on him, highjacking Felicity's announcing to do it himself and getting mad when Principal Bump doesn't pay attention to him.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Emily points out that nobody but Luz's friends would care that she attacked the Owl House since everyone else has it out for Eda.
  • Killed Off for Real: A lot of the BAT's are put down rather than captured and imprisoned.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Gus and Boscha have no idea that Perry and Boris have just been arrested for treason.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Whatever attacked Raine, Darius, and Eberwolf left Darius as nothing more than a pile of abomination goo and blood as Adrian finds out the hard way.
  • Luminescent Blush:
    • Amity does it after Luz calls her the "coolest girlfriend ever" and after calling Eda "mom", just like when she did to Lilith.
    • Nina's whole face turns bright red when Tito questions if she's ever asked out Donna.
  • Manchurian Agent: Raine believes the reason they double-crossed the BAT's is because they've been turned into a sleeper agent. However, they're able to barely remember Terra giving them the tea she used to brainwash them.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Every Hexsidian watching Emily's interview plus the Clawthornes is horrified when she declares war on their school.
  • Multi-Part Episode: This is the second of a two-part chapter splitting up the events of "Eda's Requiem".
  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • The principal of St. Epiderm is named Headmistress Midday. The principal of Glandus High before McScream was called Principal Acne.
    • The illusionist with a mouth on her head becomes known as Louis.
  • Not So Stoic: Both Simon and Cain react with glee when they see Boris at the Gland Prix.
  • Not Worth Killing: Tres tells Lilith that she's this after he hesitates to stab her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Whatever attacked Darius and Eberwolf terrified them. The fact that it killed Darius is what causes Graye to react accordingly.
  • Parental Abandonment: Emily claims that her parents, who were wild witches, abandoned her shortly after the Boiling Zit incident, leaving her alone to suffer.
  • Parental Substitute: Amity clearly views Eda as a mother figure, even accidentally calling Eda "mom" before the Gland Prix.
  • Point of Divergence: To the second half of "Eda's Requiem": The other six Coven Heads join Darius and Eberwolf in capturing the BAT's, King and his partner are forced to forfeit the Gland Prix when Owlbert senses Eda in trouble, Luz and King learn about the raid and face off against Darius and Eberwolf, Raine is forced to betray the BAT's and gets kidnapped by something which kills Darius, and Gavin takes a dive during the race so another Glandus student wins. And Belos actually appears rather than being mentioned.
  • Precious Photo: Darius is revealed to keep a photo of his family on him. When Amity's shadow finds it as she's forcibly pinning him down, it forces her to her knees to see it so she'll stop.
  • The Reveal:
    • Emily has a flying monkey as her palisman.
    • Nina has a crush on a girl named Donna Masterskull, a St. Epiderm student who is in the Healing Track.
    • Boris stayed with his cousins for a time after he left home. In present day, he's learned more about what happened to their mother.
    • Cain and Simon have another sibling named Beck. Their father is also named Samwitch.
    • Tres is the basilisk, Number 3. He vowed to kill Lilith as she oversaw the Basilisk Revival Program, which had help from Heiron Labs in exchange for funding.
    • Belos has been to Mewni before.
    • The Slave in the Magic Mirror is Grimhilde, aka the Evil Queen herself. She is also working with Bloody Mary.
    • The reason the Slitherbeast left the Knee was because it was evicted from its cave by the Shapeshifter and the Inner Demon.
    • Emily was a victim of the Boiling Zit incident. She claims it led to her parents abandoning her, as they were wild witches.
      • Felicity knew the truth about what caused the Boiling Zit incident.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Eda goads Perry to do this, telling him to escape so he doesn't get arrested and Gus won't be left all alone. Sadly, he gets captured anyway.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The movie that Eda and Angel watch together at the beginning of the chapter is John Carpenter's The Thing (1982).
    • Emily's palisman is a flying monkey, which were previously confirmed to exist.
    • Like the last part, it contains a few nods to A Blight on Bonesborough: the BAT with the Spanish number name turns out to be a basilisk who escaped the program, its hatred towards Lilith is because she headed the revival of its species. Meanwhile, Owlbert senses Eda's in trouble and interferes with his rider's chances of winning the Gland Prix and the parent of Luz's friend tries to escape after the failed raid only to be captured by Terra Snapdragon and arrested. Plus, the coven captain is named Wolffe, after her voice actress, Fryda Wolff.
  • Sole Survivor: By the end of the raid, Tres is the only Bard Against the Throne who escapes capture.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Turns out Eda kept Angel's leather jacket after all these years.
  • Trauma Button: Due to accidentally slashing Raine's arm, Eda flashes back to when she saw Angel covered in blood and claw marks.
  • Uncertain Doom: It's not shown what Bloody Mary does to Vanz, but it's implied not to be pleasant.
  • The Un-Reveal:
    • Boris chooses not to tell the Saltstar brothers what he learned about their mother yet.
    • The identity of the man with Hekapoo isn't shown, neither is where they are confirmed.
    • It is unknown how much of Emily's story about her parents abandoning her is accurate.
  • Wham Episode: The Bards Against the Throne are all arrested and sent to the rebuilt conformatorium with Ludo and Webstor with the help of a brainwashed Raine (who's kidnapped by the Inner Demon possessing the Shapeshifter, who blows up Darius) except for Tres, who tries to kill Lilith only to hesitate and escape; Goonla's egg is found by the Owl Crew who bring it home; Vanz Ator is contacted by the slave of the magic mirror, Grimhilde the Evil Queen, who sics Bloody Mary on him; Hekapoo is shown to be trying to survive in some kind of warzone; and Emily (a victim of the Boiling Zit incident) declares war on Hexside with the purpose of reclaiming its grounds in the name of Glandus.
  • Wham Line:
    • What does Grimhilde say when she confronts Vanz? Bloody Mary.
    • Emily's entire interview has a lot of notable lines, but it's her declaration of war that takes the cake.
Emily: I hope you Hexsidians are watching this. Your school is built on the bones of old Glandus after you destroyed it. Well, I think it's about time that Glandus takes our territory back, because we're done letting Hexside get away with attacking our students, including one of our top Sophomores! Because today... Glandus declares war on Hexside! Last school standing wins! Be prepared, Hexside. Because this week's going to be hell for you...
Camila: Um... is it like, a playful war like spirit week or something?
Lilith: (shocked) No. This is all-out war.
  • Wham Shot: Boris getting knocked out by Raine, who drags him to Darius to be sent to the conformatorium.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Lady Clawdea, Seaweed, and Boiling Isles Bird Person are all quickly killed off shortly after their introduction.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Simon confronts Cain about Boscha getting attacked by the rest of Glandus' top students.
    • Eda restrains Raine in order to lash out at them for double-crossing their own organization.
