"Yes. You read that title right. It's a holiday miracle."

What If Frieza Turned Good? is a Dragon Ball What If? fanfic by Lawrence Simpson aka MasakoX of Team Four Star fame as part of his Dragon Ball Discussion series of Youtube videos. This particular topic started on December 17th, 2019, and is the forty-fourth entry in the overall series.

As the title suggests, he explores his interpretation of an alternate version of the story where Frieza is inspired to reconsider his villainous ways. As of this writing this storyline is now complete. Masako is continuing the story as a bi-weekly audio drama called Revelation 'F' (tropes for it can be found there).

The playlist for the main story is here, and the playlist for Revelation 'F' can be found here or on other digital audio platforms.

What If Frieza Turned Good? has the following tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: King Cold is this. It's implied he genetically engineers his sons to be exactly what he desires and to act as a Puppet King for him. So long as they live up to his expectations, he treats them nice enough...but the moment they stop, he'll throw them away like trash and replace them. He did this to Cooler before the story began, and promptly does the same to Frieza as well. Understandably, all of his children hate him and want him dead though only Trogen actually went through with it.
  • The Ace: Frieza, being so naturally powerful that at Yardrat, he is able to learn how to clone himself, heal and Instant Transmission.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Frieza becomes stronger than he was when he went to Earth the first time, thanks to Cuit's ugrades to his mechanical parts, able to defeat a stronger Vegeta without much effort. As of the end of episode 5, he's even going to Yardrat to train. After 6 months of training, he can feel a "great power" growing in himself, and Pybara can sense it, too. He starts training by himself, in addition to his training with Pybara. He learns Instant Transmission and the cloning technique to better train and becomes Golden Mecha Frieza in part 7. Presumeably, it's True Golden Mecha Frieza, since he mastered the Spirit Control. He can also sense power levels and use Healing Hands.
    • Vegeta also gets training on Yardrat, so he knows Instant Transmission and can create a clone of himself, but doesn't know Super Saiyan, yet, until getting it in episode 6. He also gets Super Saiyan 2 earlier than before, due to training with Cooler.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Berryblue is revealed much earlier than she was originally.
    • The green-skinned street urchin that Frieza breaks up a tussle between her and somebody she stole from is strongly implied to be Cheelai, who wouldn't appear originally until the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie that takes place 16 years after the events being depicted. Episode 4 confirms that it is Cheelai.
    • Broly and Paragus show up in episode 7.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Frieza, as evidenced by this What If. He eventually develops feelings towards Cuit and Cheelai, as well as Yardrat.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Gohan is never stated to have gone into the Room of Spirit & Time, so he never gained Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2.
  • Adapted Out: Present Trunks isn't born, since Vegeta left for Yardrat before hooking up with Bulma.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Cuit calls Frieza "Droidy Boy". At first, Frieza is quite angry about it, but later accepts it.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Frieza gets his mechanical arm broken or torn off twice. First, was by King Cold when he initially banished Frieza and the second was when Trogen breaks it during their fight.
  • And the Adventure Continues: After Frieza kills Trogen, he and his crew head off into space for more adventures. Masako eventually started releasing audio adventures of Frieza and his crew called Revelation F.
  • Anti-Hero: Frieza has evolved into this, along with his crew, which consists of street urchin thief Cheelai, as well as antisocial Gadgeteer Genius, Cuit.
  • Appeal to Inherent Nature: How Frieza gets Cell on his side. Frieza appeals to the Saiyan in Cell, telling him that his brother is even stronger than himself.
Masako: Careful, Cell. Your Vegeta is showing.
  • The Artful Dodger: Street urchin Cheelai seems alright with her lot in life, but loves it that Frieza brought her out of her former life. She's still very clever, with Frieza calling her his "passepartout", meaning "someone who can go anywhere", literally "Master key".
  • Ax-Crazy: There is something deeply wrong with Trogen. Unlike his brothers, he has very little in the way of restraint or long-term planning. If he wants to hurt someone, he does it as soon as the moment arises. All of Cold's children despised him, but Trogen is the only one to kill him outright the moment he tried to verbally restrain him one too many times. Even Cooler finds him disturbing. He takes it a step further later on by blowing up Yardrat just because Frieza might have been hiding there and manically demanding validation from Cooler for his action. Masako compares Cooler and Cold to Lawful Evil, Frieza (as he was originally) to Neutral Evil and Trogen to Chaotic Evil.
  • Badass and Child Duo: Frieza and Cheelai have this dynamic, and quite a few of the associated tropes. Cheelai's age is never specified, but Masako only ever refers to her as "young girl" or "girl" in terms of age. Given that it takes place around 16 years before the Broly movie and she looks like she's in her 30s at the latest in the film, her being at most a teenager in this is likely.
  • Bad Boss: Trogen is even worse than Frieza, and that's saying a lot.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: After Vegeta reveals his identity in Part 5, Frieza says that he fully expects Cuit and Cheelai to take the ship and run away. However, they explain that they owe him for getting them out of the terrible places they were in, and for protecting them from bigger threats. Frieza is genuinely stunned by this show of honest loyalty.
  • Being Evil Sucks: Frieza, and later Cooler after being stuck with Trogen, figure out over the course of the story just how screwed up their family business actually is and their own limits for how much they can stomach it. For Frieza, it comes with his huge Break the Haughty moment. For Cooler, it's a work in progress as he becomes progressively more disgusted with Trogen's horrific mounting crimes. In the end, Frieza tells Cooler that he can lead the former Frieza and Cold Force, since Frieza is not interested in ruling his empire, anymore.
  • Big Bad: Trogen, the Ax-Crazy third son of King Cold and his intended successor after exiling Frieza. Initially, King Cold's exile of Frieza and creation of Trogen causes the conflict, but he ends up dead by Trogen's hand as his drive to kill Frieza surpasses Cold's desire to leave a successor to run the empire. From there, Trogen is regarded as the biggest threat in the story.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: King Cold and Perfect Cell are active villains during the plot, but the former is suddenly killed off by Trogen and the latter is easily bested by Golden Frieza and forced to join the heroes, highlighting that Trogen is the biggest threat.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Frieza now has this to Cuit and Cheelai. When Cheelai is grabbed on Yardrat, only as a test by Pybara, Frieza immediately rushes to rescue her. It's revealed that he switches midway between learning cloning to learn Healing Hands to protect Cuit and Cheelai.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Due to his overconfidence, Trogen lets Vegeta simply go to a ship with no guards near him while planning to blow him up in said ship. Vegeta moves the bomb to Trogen's ship and easily escapes.
  • Break the Haughty: Frieza's ill-fated I Surrender, Suckers gambit completely shatters his ego, as not only did his power fail him against Goku, so did his cunning. His further humiliations at King Cold's hands serve to utterly break him until he's literally limping away from his homeworld into self-imposed exile. This is ultimately what makes Frieza redeemable: with his pride broken and left with nothing, he is forced to rely on others and actually develop empathy for them. Oddly enough, it's incredibly similar to what canon Vegeta goes through, but in a fraction of the time.
  • Bullying a Dragon: The patron of the eating establishment that Frieza went to provokes Frieza. Frieza nearly kills him with one punch.
  • The Caligula: Trogen in spades.
  • Canon Immigrant: Cooler shows up alongside his armored squadron and participates throughout the story.
  • Car Fu: Well, spaceship-fu, but Cuit rams Trogen's flagship into him, just before Frieza and Trogen start to fight, and drives the ship into the sun with Trogen still on the front.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: After Cooler vehemently disagrees with Trogen's command to kill Vegeta, Trogen viciously beats him within an inch of his life before derisively calling him a "goody-goody".
  • Cassandra Truth: When Future Trunks shows up, neither Mecha-Frieza nor Goku appear on Earth as per his timeline, which means the rest of the Dragon Team is less inclined to believe his stories about evil Androids or Goku suffering a fatal heart virus.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Vegeta is on the receiving end of 3 so far, against Mecha Frieza, 5th form Cooler and 2nd form Trogen.
    • Yamcha is simply tossed aside by Frieza.
    • In Part 9, Cooler is KO'd by Trogen and Android 17 is dominated by Frieza.
    • Part 10 has Frieza first stomping both 17 and 18, before Cell absorbs them. Frieza then goes Golden and stomps Perfect Cell.
  • Cyborg: As in canon, Frieza gets turned into a cyborg after his fight with Goku. When he first unlocks his Golden form, the raw power is actually more than his cybernetics can handle, necessitating an upgrade to make them stronger.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Trogen blows up Yardrat, killing everyone there. Luckily, they are brought back by a wish from Porunga.
    • Androids 17 and 18 aren't brought back to existence after being absorbed by Cell.
  • Designer Babies: Trogen is specifically made as a ruthless, Ax-Crazy killer, lacking the "flaws" of Frieza and Cooler.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Frieza heals Goku, to the surprise of everyone, including Cuit and Cheelai.
  • Diminishing Returns for Balance: Goku's Healing Hands has this downside, with it not being able to stop Goku's heart virus due to this.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: Vegeta and later Frieza learn this technique on Yardrat.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Frieza has one of these, after Vegeta gives away Yardrat's location to King Cold, Cooler and Trogen, which Frieza sees.
  • Enemy Mine:
    • Cooler proposes an alliance with Vegeta, to bring down King Cold. Later, Cooler and Vegeta team up with Trogen, after Trogen killed King Cold.
    • Frieza tells Goku that "He has finally seen sense' and asks for Goku to train him in martial arts. This is in part because Frieza now hates Vegeta more than he ever did Goku after Vegeta's actions get Yardrat destroyed..
    • The end of Part 10 has Golden Frieza trying to get Perfect Cell on his side to fight Trogen. He ultimately does side with them...only to save his own life.
  • Enfant Terrible: Trogen is pretty much a newborn infant, but he's practically born completely Ax-Crazy and even more insane than his brothers. So much so he mercilessly kills King Cold without batting an eye.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even Perfect Cell is horrified by how completely and utterly insane Trogen is.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When a junk dealer, Cuit, genuinely thanks Frieza for doing a job, Frieza is left confused, as no one has ever shown him genuine compassion or gratitude before.
  • Eviler than Thou: Trogen proves this to Cooler and Vegeta as well as King Cold, who he effortlessly slaughters when he gets tired with him.
  • Fantastic Racism: Frieza naturally hates the Saiyans, but Cheelai also does, revealing that Vegeta and his crew were the ones to attack her planet and possibly orphan her.
  • Flawed Prototype: How King Cold sees Cooler. While Cooler was powerful and competent, he was too similar to Cold in personality and thus unable to be easily controlled as Cold desired. As such, he threw Cooler away and replaced him with Frieza. He comes to see Frieza the same way, which is why he replaced him with Trogen.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Cuit, the junk dealer from the junk planet of the Cold Force, is able to upgrade and repair Frieza's mechanical parts significantly better than King Cold's mook's were able to do. Later, he upgrades him even more, as well as his ship. After Cuit reveals he's been laid off, Cheelai suggests Frieza let him join them.
  • Genre Shift: As Masako describes it, the developing scenario ended up shifting from a battle shounen to something more akin to a Space Opera.
  • Giggling Villain: Trogen is a a giggling madman who is far crazier than King Cold anticipated.
  • Golden Super Mode: Vegeta goes Super Saiyan and then later Frieza becomes Golden Mecha Frieza.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Cold made Trogen with the expressed purpose of him being far stronger than Frieza ever was and different from himself unlike Cooler who he found too similar to himself. He succeeded in both, but unfortunately 'different from himself' turned out to be 'a raging psychopath' who is also far stronger than himself. Trogen kills him the instant he gets tired of his orders. Frieza even points out that in his rush to create a superior version of Frieza, he ended up creating a monster that would leave his empire in ruins.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Frieza is much better, but still haughty with plenty of jerkass tendencies. He is still Frieza, after all.
  • Healing Hands: Goku gains this ability to heal others during his now extended time on Yardrat. It's notably not as good as Dende's healing, though. Frieza also learns it as well.
  • Heel–Face Turn:
    • The entire point is Frieza having one.
    • Cell ends up performing one due to simply having nothing else to do but go explore space and figure out a purpose other than the one he was made to have.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Cuit pilot's Trogen's ship into him at lightspeed in an attempt to drive him into the sun and kill him. Unfortunately, Trogen proves too strong for that to work.
  • History Repeats: Goku and Frieza point out that Trogen not perfecting the 5th Form was basically like Frieza using 100% power on Namek: He burned through his energy too quick. This gets lampshaded by Goku and Frieza.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • Frieza's attempt to trick Goku into thinking he's helping him escape Namek alive so he can kill him in space backfires big time, resulting in him losing everything.
    • King Cold is ultimately killed by Trogen, who he created to replace Frieza.
    • Trogen transforming into his fifth form was his undoing, because he didn't bother to perfect that form, unlike Cooler did, resulting in a quick drop on stamina and power. Frieza even lampshades this by saying that history repeats itself.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: Frieza, Emperor of Universe 7 formally feared as the most powerful being alive, ultimately flees his empire a broken wreck, physically and mentally, with nothing left but the ship he's on. Gets worse in part 2 when Frieza is forced to perform menial labor just to repair himself. Lampshaded by King Kai, who outright tells Goku that Frieza's no threat to anyone in his current condition. This is important, as Frieza is only in a position to be redeemed due to having lost everything and had his pride broken.
  • Humiliation Conga: Frieza choosing to attempt an I Surrender, Suckers gambit on Goku ends in complete failure with Goku besting him again and throwing him into space and Namek's proximity right as it explodes directly in his face. King Cold is sickened by Frieza's failures and strips him of his title to retake the throne himself while also belittling his son, and then Frieza attacks Cold in a rage only to get curb-stomped. All this humiliation completely crushes Frieza. Frieza is then forced to perform menial labor just to repair himself.
  • Hurl It into the Sun: Cuit attempts to kill Trogen by piloting Trogen's ship into him at lightspeed and crashing both of them into the sun. Unfortunately, Trogen proves too strong for that to work and just powers up to his final form to escape.
  • Hypocrite: Frieza's condemnation of the Saiyans for their genocidal actions and refusal to forgive them. While this would be perfectly understandable coming from any other character, at the end of the day, it's still coming from Frieza. Even if he's turned over a new life, he still committed just as many horrible crimes as Vegeta.
    • Cheelai counts too. While her hatred is even more justifiable than Frieza's, she's still this trope for a couple of reasons. She won't forgive the Saiyans, but she holds no ill will towards Frieza and wants to forget all about his crimes. Despite him personally killing and destroying just as many planets as Vegeta did, possibly orphaning many other children out there like herself, and putting them all through the exact same trauma she went through at the hands of Vegeta. Her hatred even extends to the good-natured Saiyans like Goku (who did nothing to her)and Broly (who she was initially friends with for a good portion of the story). Even if Frieza never gave the order for Vegeta and his crew to attack her world, his family still gave the Saiyans the ability to space travel in the first place, and Frieza personally chose to take Vegeta under his wing instead of just killing him, Raddtiz, and Nappa along with the rest of their people. So at least some of the blame for the Saiyans' senseless destruction throughout the universe (including Cheelai's homeworld) can be directly placed at Frieza's feet. Cheelai never once considers any of this. To be fair though, some of these facts were never exactly revealed to her. And she still is just a young child going through a lot of grief, but still.
    • Both characters hate Goku with a passion for what he did to Frieza on Namek. While Cheelai does admit, that the beating he gave him is what ultimately set him on the path he's taking now with her, she still hates his guts for doing that to her new friend in the first place. This is, of course, IGNORING the blatantly obvious fact that Frieza brought it all on himself. Everything Goku did to Frieza in direct response to Frieza's own crimes against the Namekians, and by extension, the Earthlings too, first. Frieza and his men killed every known Namekian on the planet at the time, save for Nail (who would've died anyway before merging with Piccolo later). He personally killed Dende with his own hands (a child who was likely even younger than Cheelai). He then goes on to almost kill Piccolo and then brutally blows up Krillin, Goku's best friend, and would've killed Goku and Gohan next had Goku not snapped and finally become a Super Saiyan. These facts never come up when Cheelai calls Goku out on the entire incident. Again, she's still just a young girl going through a lot of turmoil, and not all of the facts were given to her, but Frieza however has no such excuse to point fingers when he was the cause of the whole thing in the first place. It doesn't help one bit in the sequel that whenever his own crimes and mistakes are brought up, all he has to say is "I said I was sorry!"
  • Insane Equals Violent: Trogen is completely insane, and more violent than the rest of his family combined.
  • I Surrender, Suckers: The Nail: Frieza attempts to trick Goku into thinking he's given up and is helping him escape Namek alive just so he can throw him into space. This fails catastrophically and starts Frieza's downward spiral.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite easily beating Androids 17 and 18 down, and nearly destroying them, Cell shows up and Frieza lets him absorb them to become Perfect Cell.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Frieza has evolved into this. He cares for Cuit and Cheelai, and also cared for the Yardratians after spending around a year there.
  • Just Toying with Them: After a little bit, Frieza starts just toying with Android 17, not even bothering going Golden due to having gotten a power up from training. Later, he does this against both 17 and 18 and when Cell becomes Perfect, Frieza goes Golden and toys with Cell.
  • Karmic Thief: When Yamcha says he's not a bandit anymore and wouldn't steal from regular people, Cheelai tells him that Frieza and his crew only steal from people who deserve it.
  • King Incognito: The reason Frieza can wander the galaxy undetected despite being the "Emperor of Universe 7" is because he's in his final form. As Masako points out, very few people had ever seen him use that form before. The fact that he's cybernetic probably contributes.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Frieza's attempt at tricking and betraying Goku backfires immensely, resulting not only in him being no better off than in canon initially but ultimately losing everything.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Pybara gets killed by Trogen when Yardrat is destroyed.
  • Morality Pet: Frieza, after having his ego completely broken and being forced to wander the universe, actually begins to develop connections with Cheelai and Cuit, and begins to have Pet the Dog moments towards them.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Cuit is drawn in official art as a big muscled guy, but is still weak in terms of power levels.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Vegeta feels terrible when Trogen blows up Yardrat and he was the one to give away their location. A few seconds later, Frieza does as well and actually sheds a tear.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Frieza senses that Yardrat gets destroyed in this manner.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • No-Sell: Final Form Trogen is powerful enough to do this to an attempt by Cuit to incinerate him in the sun.
  • Not Me This Time: Cheelai asked Frieza whether it was him who ordered her planet attacked or someone else. Frieza reveals that he didn't send anyone to her homeworld, as it "wasn't ready, yet", and that Vegeta, Nappa and Raditz did it on their own.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Pybara comments that Frieza and Vegeta both learned the Yardratian cloning technique to train better by themselves.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Goku gives Frieza a chance after seeing him genuinely show remorse for the destruction of Yardrat.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Vegeta when he learns that Trogen is only in his first form when losing to Super Saiyan Vegeta. 2nd-form Trogen easily trounces Super Saiyan Vegeta.
    • The Z team when they sense Frieza suddenly appearing on Earth and then raging, before then teleporting to Goku's house.
    • The Z team when Frieza lets Cell become Perfect, and then everyone including Perfect Cell after Frieza becomes Golden Frieza.
  • The Paranoiac: By his own admission, Trogen is this and doesn't trust anyone or anything but his own desire to find Frieza.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Frieza contemplates sparing Trogen for a second, but decides against it and vaporizes him.
  • Plucky Girl: Cheelai. She is possibly orphaned, having not seen her parents in years and had been abandoned by everyone else before that isn't Frieza.
  • Point of Divergence: Frieza attempting an I Surrender, Suckers gambit on Goku blows up in his face, resulting in him being sent into a downward spiral ending with him being forced into self-imposed exile, wandering aimlessly with his ego shattered, with King Cold taking his Empire back and setting to work on a new genetically engineered son to replace Frieza. Due to knowing Frieza is no threat to anyone anymore, Goku stays on Yardrat longer and learns more of Spirit Control than he did in the original timeline.
  • Punny Name:
    • Cuit, pronounced like "kit", is a repairman and junk dealer and is from "circuit". It also works as a double pun, since "kitting out" means improving something, which is what Cuit did to Frieza's mechanical parts and their spaceship.
    • Trogen is derived from nitrogen, to keep with the Cold family naming theme.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Former Emperor Frieza later is joined by street urchin Cheelai, and out of work repairman/junk dealer Cuit. Former bandit Yamcha and shapeshifter Puar also join them in the finale.
  • Redemption Equals Life: Frieza turns over a new leaf after giving up his former evil ways and gets to live as a result.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: The Z-Fighters are very hesitant to help Frieza against 17 and 18, because, well, he's Frieza. Though he doesn't really need any help...
  • Revenge Before Reason: Subverted: due to having his ego completely and utterly shattered, Frieza acknowledges that going after the Saiyans for revenge is a fool's gambit likely to just get him and Cold killed. By the time he actually does meet Goku, its to form an Enemy Mine.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Trogen kills King Cold.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Cuit tries to kill Trogen by kamikazing Trogen's ship into him at light speed to send both into the sun. Unfortunately, Trogen just powers up to his final form and proves too powerful for that to work.
  • Shapeshifter Mode Lock: Frieza is stuck in his final form, due to the mechanical repairs done to him. The mechanical parts don't prevent him going Golden Mecha Frieza, however...
  • Shout-Out: The start of most episodes begins with a "Frieza Log..."
  • Sibling Murder: Frieza eventually kills his brother, Trogen.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Cooler, Frieza and Trogen are all vying to defeat King Cold. Trogen kills Cold, Frieza kills Trogen, but doesn't want the crown and gives it to Cooler.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Android 16, Future Trunks, Cell, Cooler, and Goku survive the Cell saga.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Trogen in his 2nd Form has a lot of spikes, on his shoulders, arms and legs in addition to those on his head.
  • The Starscream:
    • Cooler is looking to depose his father and allies himself with Vegeta to this end. Eventually, after Trogen kills King Cold, Cooler and Vegeta are this to Trogen.
    • Paragus tries to get Cuit and Cheelai to betray Frieza. They have none of it.
  • Sticky Fingers: Cheelai is introduced having been caught pickpocketing a wealthy patron at the restaurant that Frieza was going to.
  • Stone Wall: Because Broly doesn't like fighting, Goku focuses on improving his defenses, turning Broly into this.
  • Street Urchin: What Cheelai was when she is first introduced. She then joins up with Frieza for the rest of the saga.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Subverted, despite Frieza getting a power up and gaining Golden Frieza, Masako has stated he's not actually Super levels of strength due to being a cyborg. While his organic parts can get stronger, his mechanical ones can't, so he's only about half as strong as his Super self. The ending of Part 12 has Cuit upgrading Frieza's mechanical parts further to better work with his Golden form, making him able to use his full Golden power and playing this trope straight.
  • Stronger Sibling: Trogen is an Invoked version of this. Cold intentionally designed him to be far stronger than his brothers, and succeeded with Trogen being as strong as Frieza's Final Form in his first form. So far, he's proven able to demolish everything in his both, even Cooler and Super Saiyan Vegeta, without ever having to go past his Second form. Golden Frieza eventually takes him down after Trogen runs out of stamina due to not having bothered to perfect the 5th Form.
  • Superior Successor: King Cold intentionally created Trogen using data gathered from Frieza to make him superior to any of his other sons. As such, Trogen's first form is as strong as Frieza's final form and his Second Form is more than enough to curbstomp Super Saiyan Vegeta.
  • Super Mode:
    • Vegeta gains Super Saiyan.
    • Frieza gains Golden Frieza, but his cybernetics limit his power, making him weaker than he is in Super.
    • Trogen tortures the knowledge of Cooler's Fifth Form out of him and starts trying to gain it himself.
  • Teleportation: Frieza and Vegeta learn Instant Transmission. Frieza even uses it to teleport his entire ship and crew to Vampa. And then to Earth.
  • Theme Naming: Frieza's new brother, Trogen, is named after liquid nitrogen, to go with Frieza's family's cold theme naming.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: Defied Trope by Frieza twice, as whenever it's suggested he should get his flesh back and discard his cybernetics (which do limit him occasionally, most notably in the finalé) he immediately counters with how he needs a reminder about how horrible he was and how he can’t go back to that.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Frieza opts to not kill some guards that were guarding his repossessed ship, which prompts Cheelai to ask him why. He's surprised at himself at first and says that he didn't want her to see someone killed. He also learns Healing Hands to protect them.
  • True Companions: Frieza, Cuit and Cheelai remain friends even after it's revealed who Frieza is.
  • Truly Single Parent: It's strongly implied that King Cold simply created Trogen in a lab.
  • Tutorial Mission: The first mission that Frieza chooses for Yamcha is one that he think's will be easy.
  • Underestimating Badassery:
    • Yamcha may be one of the weakest Z-Fighters, but is still much stronger than Paragus.
    • Trogen underestimated Vegeta's resourcefulness, which allowed Vegeta to escape.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Frieza, just like in the main timeline, realizes that training will make you even stronger, but significantly earlier. After Part 7, he's Strong and Skilled.
  • Victory by Endurance: Trogen has the same flaw as Frieza did on Namek in his Fifth Form and thus while initially overwhelming Golden Frieza, quickly burns through his energy and allowing Frieza to take control of the fight.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Trogen was never sane to begin with, but has one when Frieza doesn't get angry at being told he was a coward for abandoning Yardrat and instead admits it's true and praises Trogen for not being stupid. Trogen gets so furious that he turns into his fifth form.
Trogen: No! This isn't how you're supposed to react! You're supposed to get angry! Destroy me! Make me writhe and twist with agony! Make me feel true pain! Feel alive! You're ruining MY GAME!
  • Villain Respect: Cooler refuses to kill Vegeta because he respects his strength. Strangely, he calls the Super Saiyan "The strongest being in existence" to Trogen, despite Super Saiyan Vegeta being beaten down by both Cooler and Trogen.
  • We Have Reserves: While Frieza was a Bad Boss, Trogen is far worse and even more psychotic than he ever was. As such, his men despise him. They refuse to obey him when he orders them to attack the Z-Fighter. This is followed by the utterly insane Trogen obliterating them without a second thought.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Golden Frieza can't reach close to its original power as Frieza is a cyborg and his cybernetics can't increase in power without being manually upgraded.
  • With My Hands Tied: Frieza lampshades this to Trogen, after he regains control of the fight.
Frieza: I can beat you with one hand tied behind my back- oh, wait. (waves the stump of his mechanical arm, broken off earlier in the fight) I already am.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Trogen tries to have Cooler kill Vegeta due to this. Cooler refuses, because he values his strength too much.
  • You're Insane!: Cell of all people has this reaction to Trogen bisecting his entire army without a second thought.
