"This encounter, quite frankly, will be anything but brief."
MasakoX

What If Goku Landed at Capsule Corp? is one of the myriad What If? Dragon Ball scenarios created by MasakoX of Team Four Star. The playlist for this series can be found here.

In this particular scenario, Goku gets adopted by the Briefs after his escape pod lands at Capsule Corp, raised as Bocksa. As he grows up, he ends up meeting and making some surprising new friends, and naturally joins his adoptive sister when she starts searching for the Dragon Balls.

See Masako X - Dragon Ball What-If for other scenarios of this nature.

What If Goku Landed at Capsule Corp? includes examples of:

  • Adaptation Name Change:
    • Because he landed at Capsule Corp., Dr. Brief names Kakarot "Bocksa" to keep up with the undergarment Family Theme Naming.
    • Similarly, Bocksa and Chi-Chi's son is not named Gohan, he is named Longjohn to maintain said theme naming.
    • Piccolo and Kami's fusion is referred to as Kamiccolo at first, before sticking to Piccolo.
    • Inverted with Androids 17 and 18, who go by their real names of Lapis and Lazuli.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: Due to the change of "Goku's" upbringing, growing up at Capsule Corp and in civilization, this changes both his Temperament and later "Gohan's" as well.
    • Bocksa is a full-blown Guile Hero as opposed to Goku's Idiot Hero. He's more willing to think outside of the box and use pragmatism to rationalize his actions rather than sparing enemies for the sake of a future fight.
    • Longjohn's characterization meanwhile is quite similar to Kid Trunks', being something of a Bratty Half-Pint. Bocksa and Chichi have a better balance of allowing Longjohn pursue both academics and martial arts and this leads to him growing out of his Cowardly Lion stage quicker than Gohan did.
    • Piccolo ends up getting raised by Mark to set him down a heroic path from the get-go. While he is still an Aloof Ally to Bocksa, he also doesn't have any interest in trying to take over the world as his father did.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Although Piccolo still sacrifices himself to protect Longjohn, it's actually his relationship with Mark that goes about setting him down the path of being a hero.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: The Daizenshuu following the manga's first conclusion reveals that Lapis and Lazuli were originally delinquents who were captured and restructured by Dr. Gero into Androids 17 and 18. Here, the two are children of Red Ribbon soldiers who died in the line of duty, and they volunteered for Gebo's android program to honor their legacy.
  • Adaptational Badass: Bocksa, Mark, and Bulma meet Grandpa Gohan during their quest for the Dragon Balls and all receive training from him. Then they, Yamcha, and Krillin receive training from Master Roshi. Roshi later gives Launch training.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Bocksa meets Mark (the guy who grows up to be Mr. Satan) during karate lessons. The two became fast friends and he wishes to train at the Satan Dojo.
    • While technically present during the Red Ribbon Arc, Dr. Gero isn't introduced until the Androids saga. Here he is introduced properly.
    • Gebo runs into Dr. Myuu and forms an alliance with him during the Namek Arc.
    • Commander Magenta appears during the Android Saga.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Bocksa is smarter than his canon counterparts, such as knowing how to build and receive education.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance: The Ginyu Force aren't involved with Namek. Instead, King Cold sends them to lead an invasion of Earth after the Namek Saga.
  • Adaptational Wimp:
    • Though Bocksa is smarter and more disciplined than Goku, he is slightly weaker since he isn't as fight-happy. He loses to Launch in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament and gets knocked out and captured by the Red Ribbon Army.
    • General Blue kills Bora with a handgun. In the original, Bora was Immune to Bullets.
    • Downplayed, but Mark grows up to be a bit shyer than Mr. Satan and does not develop his bombastic personality.
    • Longjohn is even more of a scaredy cat that Gohan is and doesn't unlock his rage during the fight against Raditz.
  • Adapted Out: The Ginyu Force doesn't show up on Namek due to events progressing too quickly for Frieza to call upon them.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: The Namekians pity Piano for being a mutant, incensing him greatly. The worst moment is when Guru coldly snubs Piano while he unlocks the others' true potential. Piano runs off with frustrated tears in his eyes. Though once he had proven himself to be their savior, the Namekians do welcome him as one of their own.
  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: Averted. Thanks to Master Roshi's training involving mental discipline, Good and Bad Launch can now remember what the other does.
  • Amazonian Beauty: After training under Roshi, Launch is far more muscular than her canon self.
  • Amazon Chaser: Mark gets even more infatuated with Miguel than he already was when she demonstrates that she can fight once she's been untied and let out of her holding cell.
  • Assimilation Plot: This seems to be Perfection's goal—there shall be eternal peace across all of time and space, because every individual has been subsumed into his will.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Emperor Pilaf traps the group in the oven room like in the original, but since Bocksa has no tail, he can't turn into the Great Ape to break them out. They are saved when Jaco arrives, breaks them out, and makes quick work of Pilaf's gang.
    • Yamcha, Launch, Krillin, and Mark storm Muscle Tower to rescue Bocksa.
    • Jaco shows up and turns the tide against Raditz.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Tien finishes off Mercenary Tao with a Dodon Ray through his skull.
  • Boxed Crook: Jaco and the rest of the Galactic Patrol cut a deal with Vegeta: either he can rot in a cell, or he can come with them to Namek to help keep Frieza from getting the Namekian Dragon Balls.
  • Broken Pedestal: Lapis and Lazuli were originally loyal to the Red Ribbon cause, as in this timeline they volunteered to become Androids to honor their parents, who were also Red Ribbon soldiers. Boxer is able to break through their misguided image by revealing the attoricities the army commited along with how Dr. Gero tortured and experimented on him.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You:
    • Bocksa knocks out Zarbon and Dodoria and stops Vegeta from killing them, saying they need info and to prevent Frieza from knowing they are dead.
    • Nomad stops Vegeta and Trunks from killing Lapis and Lazuli, believing their Android physiology might be helpful against Perfection.
  • Cassandra Truth: When the heroes corner Bad Launch, she sneezes and turns into Good Launch, who has no idea what is going on. Bulma isn't convinced and thinks it is some kind of ploy, and is ready to beat her up before the others convince Bulma she is sincere.
  • Child Prodigy: Bocksa is capable of building as much as he is at martial arts.
  • Composite Character: As a creation of both Gebo and Dr. Myuu, the artificial life form going by Perfection is a combination of Cell and Baby.
  • Confusion Fu:
    • Thanks to Master Roshi's training, Good Launch is just as strong as Bad Launch, but fights in a different way than her. During their fight, she sneezes a few times, which confuses Bocksa and causes him to lose.
    • Mark's developing style has varying feints and misleading strikes to take advantage of his opponent's expectations.
  • Cool Big Sis: After Lapis and Lazuli joins the group, Launch takes up this role. Her blonde side wins them over with her rebellious attitude, while her blue side's calm and sweet attitude gives them a sense of belonging.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Thanks to a year's worth of training in the Room of Spirit and Time, Vegeta and Future Trunks were able to deliver one to the androids in their first encounter.
    • That said, Nomad is able to overpower Vegeta easily thanks to years of experience.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion:
    • When they meet Grandpa Gohan, who refuses to part with his Dragon Ball, Bocksa and Mark challenge him for it, but are defeated with ease. They manage to impress him enough that he trains them and Bulma, then he gives them the Dragon Ball as a parting gift.
    • Bocksa, Mark, and Bulma challenge Master Roshi and can barely touch him, though they manage to impress and surprise him a few times due to the training they received from Gohan.
  • Damsel in Distress: When the heroes storm the Red Ribbon Army base, they discover that the Army had kidnapped Miguel to force her to sing for them. Naturally, Mark goes off to rescue her.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Dr. Gero gets killed when Muscle Tower collapses on him.
    • Mark Takes the Bullet for Krillin, dying on Namek.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • Bocksa is killed by Nomad instead of by sacrificing himself to hold Raditz in place.
    • Tien and Chiaotzu are both vaporized by Nappa at the same time.
    • Yamcha easily defeats his Saibaman opponent. He is instead killed by being pierced by a blast from Nappa.
    • King Cold is defeated by Bocksa instead of Future Trunks, while Cooler is killed by Nomad instead of Goku.
  • Electric Torture: Mark finds Dr. Gero zapping Bocksa with an electric device and quickly destroys it.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When Bocksa saves General Blue from falling into a volcano, Blue cannot believe it.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Of course, the biggest nail is that Kakarot landed at Capsule Corp. instead of Mount Paozu.
    • When Master Roshi asks Bulma to let him see her panties in exchange for his Dragon Ball, Bocksa and Mark are outraged and attack him, with Bulma eventually joining in. They are no match, but Roshi recognizes that they were trained by Gohan and calls a truce, saying he'll give the Dragon Ball if they can gather the remaining six and then complete his training.
    • Instead of Roshi putting out Fire Mountain with the Kamehameha, the group puts it out with the Bansho Fan, which Roshi didn't lose. Due to Bocksa being more educated, he understands when Chi-Chi asks to be his bride, and tells her they should wait until they are older and know each other better.
    • After Yamcha joins them and they get six Dragon Balls, they meet Krillin and all of them go to Roshi's for training.
    • The group never meets the Pilaf gang at first because they always beat the gang to the Dragon Balls. While the group is being trained by Roshi, Emperor Pilaf hires Bad Launch to try to steal all their Dragon Balls at once.
    • After falling for Bad Launch's Honey Trap ploy, Roshi is ashamed of himself and decides to train himself to overcome his desires a lot earlier than canon. He also sees Launch has potential and decides to train her.
    • Launch takes Nam's place in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament. She beats Bocksa and faces Jackie Chun in the finals, with Jackie barely getting the win. Afterwards, Master Roshi decides to tell the group he was Jackie in disguise to teach them a lesson in complacency, unlike in the original where they never figured it out.
    • The Red Ribbon Army captures and interrogates Pilaf and his gang to learn all about Bocksa and his friends. When the group finds out this hostile army is after the Dragon Balls, they split up all over the world to take them on. When Bocksa tries to liberate Suno's village from Muscle Tower, he gets knocked out and captured by Major Metalitron, then General White sends samples of his blood to Doctor Gero for experimentation.
    • Dr. Gero and his son Gebo visit Muscle Tower to interrogate Bocksa and get more samples from him. His friends storm the tower to rescue him, quickly defeating Ninja Murasaki, getting Android Eight on their side, defeating Major Metalitron, then defeating General White, Dr. Gero, and his son. They evacuate as the tower collapses. Gebo emerges from the rubble to find his father dead but his research and samples intact. He vows revenge on Bocksa and his friends.
    • Bocksa is humbled by his capture and decides to not take on the Red Ribbon Army by himself, but with his friends. Master Roshi is angry at Bocksa's torture and joins them. As they liberate Upa's village from General Blue and send him packing, Bocksa get ambushed by Mercenary Tao and beaten up, but Tao retreats when his Dodon Ray is reflected back at him by the Dragon Ball Bocksa is carrying. Bocksa, Mark, Krillin, and Yamcha all climb Korin Tower and receive the training from Korin, allowing them to make quick work of Tao when he comes back.
    • When the heroes storm the Red Ribbon Army base, Commander Red attempts to self-destruct the base to kill them, not caring about his men, but Staff Officer Black kills him before he can do it. Before he can fight the heroes, Black gets assassinated by General Blue on Gebo's orders. Blue and Gebo go into hiding, with Gebo declaring himself the new leader and now they will work for years until they can defeat Bocksa and his friends.
    • Since the Red Ribbon Army captured Pilaf and his gang, they weren't able to steal the last Dragon Ball and put it in a Dragon Radar-proof box, so the heroes get it without having to go through Fortuneteller Baba's tournament. Since Bocksa is smarter and has his friends with him, they ask Shenron to bring back all the good people the Red Ribbon Army killed, not just Bora.
    • While preparing for the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, Master Roshi directs everyone to Fortuneteller Baba's tournament and everyone agrees to try it for fun and to get some training. Miguel and Upa accompany them. Since everyone is much stronger, Krillin easily beats Fangs the Vampire and Yamcha easily beats See-Through the Invisible Man. Launch loses to Bandages the Mummy due to luck, but Mark beats him. Mark then beats Spike the Devilman with some help from Miguel. The warrior Baba brings back from the dead to face Bocksa is his mother, Gine.
    • Since Bocksa doesn't have his tail, Jackie Chun never had to blow up the moon, so Man-Wolf doesn't have a grudge against him and doesn't compete in the tournament.
    • Bocksa defeats Tien because he noticed the truck and was able to avoid hitting it.
    • Bocksa is joined by his friends in avenging Krillin's death, so he has an easier time facing Tamborine. Master Roshi still dies attempting the Mafuba on King Piccolo, but Tien, Yamcha, and Mark all witness it and attempt to learn it. Bocksa and Mark both drink the Ultra Divine Water to become powerful enough to take on King Piccolo together. Piano escapes the battle and vows revenge. When King Piccolo produces the egg containing Piccolo Jr. as he is defeated, the team tracks the egg down and Mark convinces the others to raise Piccolo Jr. and hopefully turn him away from evil.
    • During the three year time skip, Mark and Miguel raise Piccolo Junior, tempering his anger towards Bocksa. Kami does not participate, instead watching the proceedings in the audience.
    • Bocksa and Chi-Chi marry and live in West City near Capsule Corp, so they stay in touch with everybody. Bocksa opens a car repair shop and Chi-Chi becomes a teacher so they have no money problems. Their son Longjohn and Mark's daughter Videl become childhood friends.
    • When Raditz shows up and kidnaps Longjohn, Krillin and Mark help Bocksa and Piccolo take him on. They are still mostly no match until Jaco shows up to help. Together, they knock Raditz out and Jaco arrests him. While they are celebrating, Nomad shows up and kills Bocksa with a single blast to the heart. The others try to attack him but are no match. The man says he is trying to help them. He warns them that the other Saiyans will show up in one year, so they have to train and wait a year to revive Bocksa so he can get training from King Kai. The man then disappears. The others listen to the warning and so Mark, Piccolo, and Jaco start training Longjohn.
    • Since Longjohn isn't separated from his mother and is trained by everyone instead of just Piccolo, he becomes better adjusted, becomes much stronger, and loses his scaredy cat mentality.
    • Bocksa and King Kai bond over their love of cars, so Bocksa is much more respectful of him and they get more training done.
    • When Vegeta and Nappa arrive, Jaco calls for reinforcements from the Galactic Patrol. They arrive as Bocksa is facing Vegeta and help defeat him, resulting in Vegeta and Nappa getting arrested. Because they aren't as injured and there were Senzu Beans available, Bocksa doesn't go to the hospital and goes with the others to Namek in a ship provided by the Galactic Patrol. The team consists of himself, Bulma, Tights, Krillin, Chi-Chi, Longjohn, and surprisingly, Piano, who says he wants to bring Piccolo back.
    • Mark decides to join the Galactic Patrol so he can get stronger and protect his family. While in training, a technician examines Nappa's scouter and realizes Frieza listened in and learned about the Dragon Balls on Namek. Mark and Jaco visit Vegeta's cell and cut a deal with him so he'll help them go to Namek and stop Frieza.
    • When Gebo learns of Bocksa's team going into space, he follows them in his own spaceship, still hellbent on revenge. He later finds Doctor Myuu and offers an alliance.
    • Dodoria and Zarbon are spared by Bocksa and offer to help the Heroes against Frieza. After Frieza's defeat, the two flee Namek with Bocksa and end up on Yardrat.
    • Cooler and his Armored Squadron join Frieza and Cold's invasion. Nomad joins the heroes and kills Cooler.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Bocksa thrives in mechanics.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: After capturing Zarbon and Dodoria, Bocksa and Vegeta interrogate them with this method.
  • Guile Hero: Bocksa, as opposed to his canon counterpart is considerably smarter, both on an academic level and in street smarts. This comes into play during the Namek saga, as he better coordinates with Vegeta with obtaining the Dragon Balls without raising Frieza's suspicions.
  • Happily Adopted: Bocksa enjoys his new Earth family as he grows older.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Zarbon and Dodoria decide to save Bocksa from the collapsing Namek and abandon Frieza.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Mark is traumatized after Monster Carrot turned him into a carrot, and develops a phobia for carrots to boot.

  • Imported Alien Phlebotinum: Dr. Brief reverse engineers the tech of Kakarot's space pod to greatly improve Capsule Corp.

    • Son Gohan I and Roshi still end up as Kakarot's masters.
    • Despite training extensively and climbing Korin's tower, Yamcha still gets his leg broken by Tien.
    • Krillin still gets killed by Tambourine.
    • Despite knowing how to fight here Bulma stays out of the tournaments, due to only seeing martial arts as a hobby.
    • The 23rd Martial Arts Tournament still goes on, with most of the matchups being the same as canon. Kami also still possess Hero, although he is not involved in the tournament.
    • Mark still marries Miguel and has Videl. Bocksa and Chi-Chi also still get married and have a son.
    • Piccolo still dies shielding Longjohn from Nappa.
    • Nail and Piccolo still fuse and Frieza still kills Vegeta on Namek.
    • Frieza still survives Namek and attacks Earth with King Cold as Mecha-Frieza. Mecha-Frieza is still killed by Future Trunks.
    • Piccolo and Kami would still fuse due to the threat of the Androids.
  • Instant-Win Condition: Gine is too powerful for Bocksa to defeat, so she tells him that if he can pull her mask off her face, she'll forfeit. He eventually resorts to doing it and she keeps her word.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Guru unlocks the potential of the team, but refuses to do so for Vegeta. Since Bocksa is now much stronger, Vegeta shrugs and doesn't try to force Guru to give it to him.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • Jaco tells Dr. Brief all about Bocksa's Saiyan heritage. Dr. Brief decides to keep the fact his adopted son is an alien a secret from him until he is older. He at least tells Bocksa that he is adopted.

  • Mysterious Stranger: Nomad, the mysterious old man who kills Bocksa so that he can learn from King Kai and kills Cooler during the invasion of Earth. It is implied that Nomad is actually an older version of Future Trunks based off the artwork used to represent him.
  • No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: When Bocksa and Mark learn of the Dragon Balls, they consider using the wish to make themselves the ultimate fighters, but then they decide becoming stronger that way instead of training would be boring. They join Bulma's quest for the Dragon Balls for fun and to keep an eye on her.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Gine is more powerful than Bocksa and after their fight, he gushes about how strong she is. She comments that where she's from, she's not strong.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy:
    • Master Roshi has now mastered his desires and is no longer distracted by beautiful women, decades before he did so in canon.
    • Ranfan tries her Show Some Leg tactics on Launch. Launch points out it is useless because she doesn't swing that way and defeats her with ease.
  • Odd Friendship: Miguel and Mark with Spike the Devil Man. Here, Videl is named in his honor, and he's her godfather.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Dr. Gero's son appears. Like most members of the Red Ribbon Army, he has a color code name, Sergeant Gold, and most of the members don't know his name. He confides to Bocksa that his name is Gebo.
  • Only the Pure of Heart: Both Miguel and Mark are pure so they are immune to Spike the Devilman's Devilmite Beam.
  • Origins Episode: This episode goes into details into how Nomad came to be.

  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Since Grandpa Gohan never found Kakarot, he is still alive.
    • General Blue survives the Red Ribbon Army arc because he never runs into Mercenary Tao.
    • Chiaotzu avoids being killed by King Piccolo and Piano escapes while vowing revenge.
    • Miguel doesn't die because Capsule Corp is available to cure her illness.
    • Raditz is knocked out and arrested by Jaco instead of killed.

    • Jaco trained himself until he is an equal to Raditz.

He warns Dr. Brief about the Great Ape transformation, leading to Bocksa's tail being removed. Jaco then visits Earth from time to time to check up on Bocksa and becomes good friends with the family.
    • After training with Roshi and the others, Bad Launch becomes more peaceful, though she is still more aggressive than Good Launch.

  • Underestimating Badassery: When Jaco takes on Raditz, Raditz laughs because every other Galactic Patrolman he met was a total wimp. He is shocked to learn Jaco is actually roughly equal in strength to him.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: As the title says, Son Gohan I is no longer Kakarot's adoptive parent. He still becomes his martial arts teacher, though.
  • Victory by Endurance: Since Nappa had to fight Mark, Krillin, Tien, Chaotzu, Yamcha, Piccolo, Longjohn, and Jaco at the same time, when Bocksa arrives, he is so tired that Bocksa is able to knock him out with one punch.
  • We Can Rule Together: Dr. Gero's son tries to persuade the captive Bocksa to cooperate with the Red Ribbon Army, saying that once they rule the world, they will turn it into a better place. Bocksa refuses because he's seen how they hurt people who stand in their way.
