Everyday Life with Ultimate Girls is a Danganronpa fanfic created by wesst1.

After accidentally finding himself being assigned to the girls' dormitory because of his luck, Makoto Naegi finds his time in Hope's Peak becoming exceptionally bizarre. While the girls first don't trust him, they soon find that Makoto is far from what they thought he'd be. Growing ever closer, they soon find themselves starting to see the Ultimate Lucky Student as something more than a friend.

There are also several Hotter and Sexier spinoffs written both by wesst1 and Putain de Plagieur. This list includes:

Everyday Life with Ultimate Girls provides examples of:

  • Above the Influence: Makoto is able to withstand being around the girls and not giving in to his desires, even when they make it very easy to fall to them. The biggest example is after Chisa gets drunk after the revelation of Kyosuke and Juzo's real plans. Despite the fact she constantly tries to get intimate with him while drunk (trying to have him search her for her keys when it's in her breast pocket, making him change her clothes after she gives him a drunken striptease, giving him Marshmallow Hell and having him carry her bridal style), Makoto resists his hormones and does his best to help her, knowing she wouldn't get drunk for no reason.
  • Abusive Parents: Quite a few of these show up.
    • Of course, there's the canonical examples from the parents of the Warriors of Hope.
    • While Mikan was simply implied to have these in canon, here, it's confirmed outright. Her parents despise her and subject her to brutal physical and emotional abuse, and not even her grandparents are fond of her and are thus part of why she is the way she is.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Junko has a new personality she never had in canon: a nerdy personality denoted by a lisp, Nerd Glasses, and buckteeth.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Because Makoto interfered in her plans, Junko becomes a much better person. While still mischievous and teasing, she has no intentions of harming any of her classmates ever again, being happy with simply teasing her classmates and tempting Makoto every now and again.
      • In canon, Ryoko Otonashi is simply Junko's amnesiac self, made after she tested the memory-erasing process she'd use on her classmates to set off the killing game. Here, she's instead an alternate personality that serves as Junko's conscience, trying to keep Junko from going through her despair-inducing plans and out of trouble, calling her out for how little she cares for how badly hurt her classmates could be from her plans. While she initially fails, she is eventually able to help Junko out of a catatonic state with assistance from Makoto after she undergoes a Villainous Breakdown. As a result, she becomes a personality that stays with Junko, reminding her every now and again to not squander their second chance.
    • Similarly, Mukuro is able to break free of Junko's influence and begins putting her foot down, warning Makoto of Junko's true talent and also working to ensure that her plans do not go too far.
    • Since their older sibling figure was Makoto rather than Junko, the Warriors of Hope don't go on their anti-adult crusade, and instead become Makoto's little siblings. In particular, Monaca has the biggest improvement in morality; while still mischievous and playful, it's far less malevolent than her canon counterpart, and she does genuinely love Makoto and want the best for him, and also comes to genuinely see her classmates as friends. This is mostly seen during their suicide attempt, ironically: Monaca in canon planned to back out at the last second, but here, Monaca plans to join her friends in their suicide attempt.
  • Adaptational Jerkass:
    • A light example with Hajime Hinata, who just got out of a conversation with Nagito who preyed on his insecurities about being a Reserve Course student with no talent. He overhears Makoto saying he shouldn't have accepted to come to Hope's Peak Academy without hearing the full context (Makoto was talking about how he felt that he had been causing the school a lot of trouble ever since he entered). Hajime ends up punching him in the jaw, giving him a "The Reason You Suck" Speech and cutting ties with him and Chiaki all together. Thankfully, they manage to work it out and restore their friendship after Jin announces the Ultimate Talent Development Program, although things are still awkward between Makoto and Hajime.
    • Juzo Sakakura. In canon, he was portrayed as a violent brute who let his fists do the talking, and would even kill people who opposed his best friend Kyosuke Munakata; despite his actions, however, it was hinted that he truly wanted to help, with mixed results. In this story, the only positive quality shown so far is his loyalty to Kyosuke, and nothing else, as in Chapter 19, when his friend Chisa asks him about her failures as a teacher concerning Hiyoko almost being raped and sold, he coldly reminds her that her job is just a cover-up for Kyosuke to become Headmaster and that students are just a distraction. Him considering Makoto the root of the school's problems and agreeing to Kyosuke's plans doesn't help either.
Juzo: School needs to put these fuckers on a tighter leash. These students are out of control.
    • Also applies to Kyosuke Munakata, who is portrayed here with a personality close to the one he had in Side:Future. His cold attitude is already shown at the beginning of Chisa's chapter (like him showing disdain with the concept of Lucky Students by the tone of voice), but it goes further when an incident happens (see Sonia and Akane's chapters), when the man is either unreceptive to Chisa's main concern and focuses on the school's next actions, or when he starts blaming either Chisa or the student in question. It's only later on when Chisa finds both of her classmates at a bar, in a drunk state, that he reveals his intentions: becoming the Headmaster to keep the status quo by blackmailing the Steering Committee using Chisa and Juzo's work. If what he said during this is true, then he also planned to not only get rid of the Reserve Course altogether (and possibly of the Lucky Students) but 'reform' the Ultimates to get rid of their wild behaviors and make them act like ladies and gentlemen, completely ignoring the fact their quirks were the reason they were enrolled in the first place.
Kyosuke (drunk): We'll preserve the world's order and guide it to a brighter future on no one's request! It is what we must do! The Act of Charity from the Ultimates of Hope's Peak Academy!
Chisa: Act of Charity?! Do you even hear yourself?! You talk as if you own the Ultimates!
Juzo: That's what he's saying! He's gonna be Headmaster soon, so he's got to tell people who's in charge and how things should be!
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Kyoko's grandfather, Fuhito, is the reason why Kyoko was separated from Jin as he needed a new heir just like in canon, but, in this fic, it is expanded further. After the loss that tainted his perfect record fifty years ago, he goes downhill and vows to never forget this humiliation, considering his job as sacred, which is why he basically kidnaps Kyoko when she was young. After she contacts him and says she's not coming back after hearing the full story from her father and grandparents from her mother's side, he goes to Hope's Peak Academy to try to force her back to him using his connections in the law system, but at the reminder of the one who broke his perfect record, who is Reiji Naegi, Makoto's grandfather, he has a Villainous Breakdown not unlike the culprits in Ace Attorney and leaves enraged, vowing to make Makoto pay. A vengeance in progress as we see him being contacted by MEXT in Chapter 18, ending the chapter with him thinking that his revenge is coming sooner than expected...
    • The following chapter reveals that the man whom he was sent to find was Kyosuke Munakata, the latter who has lost Chisa's affection and does not react to Makoto's name well. He also hasn't changed his goals with Hope's Peak Academy, and is seemingly very glad to be given a shot at revenge.
  • Berserk Button: Because of his desire to reconcile with his daughter Kyoko, Jin Kirigiri has an intense hatred of Abusive Parents, and it takes all his effort and training from his father to not lash out when he hears Makoto's concerns that the Warriors of Hope are in abusive households.
  • Beta Couple: The spin-offs show that Komaru Naegi and Yuta Asahina become a couple as well in the future.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Makoto is generally considered one of the gentlest people that one can know, and is an absolute Nice Guy and All-Loving Hero. However, he does not take kindly to seeing those he cares about being threatened in any way, which also makes him a Chick Magnet, though he is somewhat oblivious to this.
  • Big Brother Worship:
    • While not related by blood, the Warriors of Hope do call Makoto "Mako-nii" and give him the nickname of Legendary Hero. While they were untrusting of him at first as he met them as a substitute teacher in the uncaring Hope's Peak Elementary, because of his kind nature, hard work to help them in their studies, attempts to deal with their bad home lives, and eventually him saving them from committing suicide and helping them find new homes (with Monaca even getting formally adopted by Makoto's family), they greatly all admire him.
    • In addition, Komaru Naegi also looks up to her big brother due to his kind heart, which leads her to pull a gender-flipped version of My Sister Is Off-Limits to see if any of Makoto's dormmates are worthy of dating him.
    • Akane Owari's siblings all look up to her due to her Promotion to Parent, and even start to see Makoto in a similar light when he comes over and not only cooks them fresh gyudon but also teaches them to cook the aforementioned meal. This leads to them becoming Shippers On Deck for Akane and Makoto, as they realize that Makoto knows of Akane's kind side, and they also want someone to look after her like she does with them.
  • Broken Pedestal: Chisa suffers from this in Chapter 19 towards Kyosuke and Juzo, when both of them, drunk, reveal their plans to her concerning Hope's Peak Academy. Kyosuke wished to use the result of his friends' investigation to blackmail the Steering Committee, whom he said was the source of all problems, to make him the next Headmaster, without fixing any of the problems there if not making them worse. While Juzo doesn't mind this in the slightest, Chisa, who genuinely wanted to help everyone in school and 'not just a selected few', falls out of love with Kyosuke, sprays both of them with her drink, gets Juzo fired after telling Makoto and Jin about their meeting, and ignores Kyosuke's calls and messages afterward.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Mahiru's father is this, stating that Ultimate Photographer isn't allowed to date until she's his age, much to her embarrassment.
  • Broken Tears: Junko sheds these while in a Troubled Fetal Position during her Villainous Breakdown.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Junko targets Makoto primarily because he scolded her for mistreating Mukuro, her sister.
  • Cerebus Retcon: Junko's Mood-Swinger tendencies get this, as they are revealed to be the result of her Sanity Slippage as Makoto becomes more and more of a Spanner in the Works for her plans, ultimately culminating in an attempt to outright murder him before ending up falling into a Villainous BSoD. That being said, this trope is downplayed when one sees that she still has her Mood-Swinger tendencies after Makoto helps her perform a Heel–Face Turn, but she is in far more control of them than previously, able to switch between them at will.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Makoto is this for sure. He can't see that all the female members of his upper class (including their teacher) and most of the female members of his fellow class hold a romantic interest in him.
  • Cooldown Hug:
    • Makoto gives a lot of these to his friends.
      • He gives one to Ibuki after her disastrous reunion with her old bandmates.
      • Sonia receives one from him after ranting about her country's torrid history with dictators and rebellion.
      • He gives one to Mikan after her fears of being ignored are brought to the surface, resulting in her breaking into tears.
      • Kotoko gets one when Makoto unintentionally pushes her Trauma Button (the word "gentle") trying to help Nagisa accept help when the track marks on his arms are revealed.
      • Celeste and Chiaki each get one after they mess up in their attempts to help Makoto with his chores.
    • Mahiru receives one from her father after she finds out she had called him lazy when he had actually suffered unjustly from Japan's mistreatment of the mentally unwell.
    • Hiyoko gets one from Mahiru and Mikan after her Heel Realization, tearfully apologizing for how she made Mahiru break her camera and mistreating the Ultimate Nurse.
  • Cute Kitten: Miyabi is a Calico Japanese Bobtail found as a stray by Makoto, and she becomes Peko's pet, choosing her when brought to the dorms. Everyone is absolutely smitten with her, and Miyabi eventually manages to save Peko when she is Driven to Suicide.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Jin never wanted to leave Kyoko, and after Kiyone's (his wife and Kyoko's mother) death where Fuhito wouldn't let Kyoko see her, Jin tried to take her with him, but Fuhito forced him to let him keep Kyoko, saying he would make the courts see him as unfit to take care of her otherwise. As a result, Jin had no choice but to give Kyoko to Fuhito, but on the condition that she could meet with her maternal grandparents so that she could get some proper love.
  • Dirty Old Man: This Fatal Flaw is what brings down the Steering Committee. They're revealed to have installed a camera in the girl's locker room, and Chihiro uses the feed to track down one member and find the others. Junko even refers to them by this trope.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: In canon, Mahiru's father was simply a lazy bum, but the fanfic has him suffer from an anxiety disorder, brought on by learning that his war photographer wife was injured due to a bomb explosion, losing his job after he suffered an anxiety attack. Because of Japan's conservative opinion about the mentally unwell, he hides his condition from his daughter, remembering how sad she was when she tried to tell her peers her mother wasn't there because of her job and instead said Mahiru's mother abandoned her and feeling that it would worsen if she found out he was "crazy".
  • Drowning My Sorrows:
    • Chisa ends up doing this once she comes back from her meeting with her now ex-friends, busting into Koichi Kizakura's office and drinking his liquor. Just like she said mere moments before, she doesn't take the alcohol well. Thankfully, Makoto ends up taking care of her needs in this state, although not without her teasing him a lot. When she wakes up the next morning, she's beyond embarrassed.
    • What Fuhito ends up reduced to after losing custody of Kyoko, all the while ranting at Makoto for stealing his heir and Makoto's grandfather for ruining his perfect record.
  • Driven to Suicide:
    • After Natsumi ends up attacked by Sato, the Kuzuryu clan leader declares Peko no longer part of the clan, and with no purpose left, she feels the only way to atone for her failure and regain her honor is to commit Seppuku. It's only interrupted by her new cat Miyabi and Makoto, who works with the rest of the dormmates to keep her from going through with it.
    • As in canon, the Warriors of Hope end up finding their terrible home lives too much to bear, especially when they feel Makoto is fed up with them. Thankfully, like Peko, Makoto is able to save them, and they end up in much better homes.
  • Et Tu, Brute?:
    • Hiyoko has a version of this after Mahiru finally puts her foot down against her bullying. Seeing her greatest enabler turn against her causes her to run out of dinner in tears.
    • Chisa has a much darker version when she sees that Kyosuke and Juzo simply wanted to place Kyosuke as the headmaster of Hope's Peak, devastating her as she legitimately wanted to fix the problems in Hope's Peak.
  • Good Feels Good: What cements Mukuro's Heel–Face Turn, seeing that love feels much better to her than despair ever did.
  • Happily Adopted: All the Warriors of Hope become this after Makoto saves them from their suicide attempt. Masaru is taken to his second cousin (Himiko Yumeno) and her father, Jataro is adopted by Chihiro Fujisaki's family (his mother was the sister of Taichi Fujisaki, Chihiro's father), Kotoko lives with her aunt, and Nagisa lives with his grandparents. As for Monaca, she is adopted by Makoto and Komaru's parents, making her Monaca Naegi and, therefore, Makoto and Komaru's little sister.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Mukuro and eventually Junko change from agents of despair to genuine friends of Makoto, averting their plans for global despair.
  • I Have No Son!: Fuhito disowned Jin as a son when he chose to focus on talent rather than detective work, only coming back to try to take Kyoko as his heir when no one else proved worthy.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Makoto is able to prevent Peko and the Warriors of Hope from committing suicide.
  • Lap Pillow: Makoto gets this treatment from Mukuro, noting how soft her thighs are. For bonus points, she lets him rest while she cleans his ears.
  • Lighter and Softer: Most definitely. Compared to the Deadly Game in canon, this fanfic is a Slice of Life Harem Genre. That being said, it's not unwilling to go into territory just as dark as canon did, but for the most part, it is considerably more comedic and light-hearted than canon was.
  • Loving a Shadow: What Chisa was doing with Kyosuke. While the two were classmates, Chisa thought that Kyosuke sent her to try and help everyone in the school by exposing the corruption of the Steering Committee, but it comes to light that Kyosuke intended to blackmail the Committee into naming him as the next Headmaster so he could essentially turn Hope's Peak into an Assimilation Academy. At this, Chisa is utterly horrified, falling out of love with Kyosuke.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Gender and age inverted. Komaru and Monaca each keep an eye on Makoto's dorm mates and decide who they think is worthy of being their big brother's girlfriend. Currently, Komaru is shown to be fond of Aoi because of her Nice Girl nature and recognizing the beginnings of the Ultimate Swimming Pro's crush, while Monaca leans more to mischievous girls like Junko, Celeste, or Hiyoko, disliking the idea of Sonia taking Makoto to Novoselic.
  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • Makoto's mother is named Momo Naegi.
    • Sato has her full name as Fuwa Sato.
    • Kyoko's late mother is named Kiyone Kirigiri.
  • Never My Fault: Just as in canon, one of Junko's traits is that she never takes responsibility for the consequences of her despair-causing plans. When Ryoko chastises her for being responsible for getting Akane's siblings lost in Aokigahara Forest, Junko claims she didn't make them go there. One aspect of her Heel–Face Turn is that she finally starts taking responsibility for her actions, apologizing for the first time in her life and even asking if she said the words "I'm sorry" correctly.
  • New Friend Envy: Suffice to say, Sato does not take Mahiru's friendship with, and later crush on, Makoto too well. Namely, she is jealous of how Makoto's words of encouragement against Natsumi's bullying hold more weight than hers did, and it spurns her, with encouragement from Junko, to frame Makoto for her attempt to murder Natsumi.
  • Official Couple: Hilariously, the first couple isn't between humans, but cats. Celeste's cat Grand Bois Chéri Ludenberg becomes the mate of Peko's cat Miyabi, with Miyabi even about to give birth to their kittens and Grand Bois Chéri Ludenberg looking out for them.
  • Papa Wolf: Jin turns out to be this. While he did abandon Kyoko, it was only due to being forced by Fuhito to leave her to him, and as a result of his wish to reconcile with his daughter, Abusive Parents are a massive Berserk Button for him. When Makoto tells him of the abuse of the Warriors of Hope, he undergoes Tranquil Fury at how badly the Warriors of Hope are treated. When Fuhito tries to get Kyoko to come back when she learns the truth of Fuhito forcing Jin to leave her to him, Jin makes sure that he treats Kyoko with respect.
  • Polyamory: Currently, Makoto has 15 girls all deeply in love with him, but the Hotter and Sexier spinoffs indicate that the number of girls will eventually increase to a whopping 30.
  • Poor Communication Kills: In chapter 16, Everyday Life with Li'l Ultimates, Makoto, working as a teacher's aide, is put to work with the Warriors of Hope, and all of them become very attached to him and he becomes close to them as well. In doing so, he's able to figure out that something's wrong with their home lives, and works alongside Miaya Gekkogahara, Hope's Peak Elementary's nurse and his grandfather (a judge) to help them out. However, the stress of trying to help with their various problems and the reality of the bureaucracy being too slow to help out causes him to repeat the Madness Mantra "It'll all be over soon" in getting them the help they need. Unfortunately, the Warriors of Hope misunderstand what he means, and believe that they are so draining to deal with that Makoto is counting the days until he can leave. After another horrible day, they believe he's done dealing with them, and this is what spurns them to commit suicide. When Makoto comes back and sees the suicide note, he's horrified to see them apologize for seemingly upsetting him, though thankfully, he is able to save them and have them testify about their home lives, earning them new home lives free of abuse. The trope is even lampshaded.
If only they had communicated better, they may have spared themselves some of the pain that was to come.
  • Punny Name: In the vein of Ace Attorney, the important names of Novoselic are based on various phrases.
    • Dosinmatter is "Doesn't matter".
    • Cubhabben is both "could have been" or "could happen".
    • Wudagest is "Would have guessed".
  • Reformed Bully: In light of her Attempted Rape, Hiyoko becomes this. She still occasionally calls Mikan names, but rather than for the fun of it like before, she is trying to get her to stop being such an Extreme Doormat and fire back against those who mistreat her. She also drops her nickname of "Pig Barf", calling her by her real name.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Masaru Daimon is the second cousin of Himiko Yumeno, while Jataro Kemuri is the son of Taichi Fujisaki's sister and one of the potential Togami heirs. This makes him the half-nephew of Byakuya Togami and the cousin of Chihiro Fujisaki. As a result, after Makoto saves them from suicide and their Abusive Parents are arrested, the two are Happily Adopted into their respective families.
  • Shout-Out: Quite a few.
  • Shown Their Work: There's quite a lot of research put into the story.
    • Sonia's chapter looks into the culture of medieval Europe, as Novoselic's isolationism was the result of the nations believing that Novoselic's success after the death of their tyrannical king could only come from witchcraft, as per the Divine Right of Kings, kings were chosen by God to lead the country, and actions against them would be sacrilegious.
    • For Aoi's chapter, there's a look into the roles of rugby players as well as Japanese terminology, namely the concept of Yamato Nadeshiko.
    • Mahiru's chapter, however, looks into a darker part of Japanese culture: their less-than-progressive look at those with mental illnesses like anxiety. There is also a look into the psychological effects of parents being separated from their children, particularly the vilification of the present parent, and the deification of the absent parent.
    • Hiyoko's chapter looks into the fact that she solely uses a fan to have her be a practitioner of Su-Odori.
    • The Warriors' Of Hope chapter involves the fact that a school-based scandal would involve MEXT, as well as the bad track record Japan has (at least as of 2018) with reporting child abuse and the reasons behind such, incorporating it into why Makoto couldn't get them out of their abusive households until their suicide attempt.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: This trope is primarily why Makoto is such a Chick Magnet. His kindness and patience earn him the adoration of his dormmates, and they usually become a part of his harem after a major event.
    • He helps Mukuro start taking steps to carve her own path.
    • He reassures Sayaka that she'll always be the idol that everyone admires.
    • He snaps Ibuki out of her funk when she's booed offstage and demeaned by her old bandmates.
    • He reassures Sonia that she'll always be his upperclassman even as a queen, meaning a lot to her as all she wants is to be treated like a normal high school student. He also saves her from a sniper and takes a bullet and shows his faith in her when dealing with an attempted coup.
    • He helps Akane take care of her siblings, reassuring her that she's done as good a job as anyone in her situation could, and when she finds herself struggling to find her younger siblings in the dark, he comes to help her and reassure her that relying on others doesn't make her any less strong.
    • He works with Aoi when she gets injured and reassures her that she has her own beauty and doesn't need to be overly feminine to do so. He also takes out her date after he started belittling her and putting her down for being unfeminine.
    • He helps Mahiru realize not all men are bad and also reconnect her with her father, and also works to help fix her friendship with Hiyoko.
    • He gently assures Mikan that she does matter to him, and that he is thankful to be her friend. He also gets Hiyoko to finally apologize for constantly bullying her.
    • He works with Hiyoko, making her favorite meals so as to reconcile with her and then saves her when she nearly gets raped, calling for help and refusing to give her up.
    • He bonds with Celestia via board games like in canon, but when a competitor uses her real name against her, he reassures her by telling her both names fit her and regardless of what her name is, he cherished their times together. Him playing her fantasies as her C-Rank knight certainly helps matters too, unlike in canon.
    • He helps Peko feel more human and happy, and he fights for her place in the Kuzuryu clan after her attempted suicide. Although it doesn't work, it helps Peko understand that she has more value than just a weapon.
    • He also helps Kyoko with her family drama, reconnect with her father, and make her think of what kind of detective she wants to be, although it also results in her parting ways with her grandfather Fuhito. She literally says that Makoto is the reason why she began to care about the girls in the dorm.
    • In a more familial sense, he also helps the Warriors of Hope with their various traumas, playing into their character class by labeling himself a bard and trying his best with them, much unlike their neglectful homeroom teacher. He also gives Jataro filling meals, encourages Nagisa to get rest, gives Kotoko a Cooldown Hug after learning of her Trauma Button, offers to help Monaca with her situation despite learning of her Obfuscating Disability, and while he does accidentally make them think he's sick of them and leaves them Driven to Suicide, he rescues them in spite of dislocating his arm and getting his hand cut, refusing to let go without all of them.
    • He bonds with Chiaki with games in general, but the ship sails once her friendship with Hajime is temporarily severed after their latest conversation about Hajime ends with him blaming Makoto for the school's end. Makoto stayed by her side, helped fix their friendship, and even baked her special cookies of her favorite video game characters. Even Chiaki is surprised by this outcome.
''(Chiaki) had expected to go down the "Hinata Route", but the past few weeks had made her happy she ended up in the "Naegi Ending". Hinata would always be her precious friend, but she thought that Hinata needed to learn to love who he was now before anyone could trip flags for his route. While she had been so focused on what she lost, Naegi has gone and tripped her relationship flags.
    • He's a massive help for Chisa, as he not only helps her take care of the dorm, but his various actions helping the girls, her included, make her very affectionate towards him. She even considers him to be perfect to the school's therapist, Miaya Gekkogahara, holding him to the same level of adoration as Kyosuke before her Broken Pedestal moment. Once she recovers, she chooses to support Makoto to the fullest, even insisting that Makoto calls her Chisa-chan when they are alone.
    • He's the reason why Junko changed her ways, as his involvement in her plans makes them fail at almost every turn. That frustration would lead to her slowly losing her sanity, shown by alternate personalities popping up. It would eventually all come crashing down after her failed attempt to murder Makoto, which leads to her breaking down... only to be saved by Makoto who stated she didn't need to be Despair, but herself. After this, she considers him her Hope.
  • Sins of Our Fathers:
    • What Ambassador Wudagest's motivations for his attempted coup amount to. He believes that Sonia is no different than her tyrannical ancestors and that she will ultimately turn out like them.
    • Alongside Makoto breaking Kyoko from his control, Fuhito Kirigiri also wants Makoto to suffer because it was his grandfather Reiji Naegi who broke his perfect record.
  • Soap Punishment: Makoto does a variation on this trope. With help from Seiko and Ruruka, he's able to make an especially sour mouthwash and disguise it as fruit juice. When Hiyoko's bullying becomes too much, he tricks her into drinking the mouthwash to "do something about that mouth of [hers]".
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Everyone who died in the Tragedy and past it is spared, since Junko ultimately pulls a Heel–Face Turn. This also includes Chiaki, who never ends up executed.
    • Additionally, Makoto is able to interrupt Sato's murder attempt on Natsumi. As a result, both girls' lives are spared.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Happens to Chisa Yukizome when she falls for Makoto. However, it's Downplayed since Chisa's (who is only four years older than Makotonote , averting a severe Age-Gap Romance) feelings are more romantic than sexual in nature, as it was Makoto's kindness and willingness to help her and her students that made her get interested in him. When he helps her after she suffers a Broken Pedestal moment with Kyosuke Munakata and ends up drunk, his loyalty, willingness to help her, and refusal to take advantage of the situation leads to her becoming part of his harem. That being said, she isn't unwilling to use her more mature body to try and tempt him, and she is one of the more actively seductive members of the group. Makoto does find her incredibly attractive and even flirts with her playfully, calling her the "Goddess of Hope's Peak Academy".
  • Tears of Remorse:
    • Sayaka gets this after Makoto's speech, because she doesn't think she's a good person after doing the bad deeds necessary to become an idol herself.
    • Mahiru sheds these when she realizes her father was never lazy, but couldn't get work due to his anxiety disorder, regretting how she had belittled him as a deadbeat.
    • Hiyoko sheds these when she realizes that those she had turned her back on still came to rescue her during her near rape. She cries over how she made Mahiru smash her camera and how she had mistreated Mikan throughout their time in school.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Why Junko saves Makoto and gives Ambassador Wudagest a Groin Attack. She feels that only she can kill Makoto.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Makoto gives an unintentional variation in his attempt to calm down Junko after her attempt to murder him fails, giving her a series of accidentally Armor Piercing Questions.
Junko: WHY!? Why is it that no matter what I try, you can stop me? I fed Maizono's fears! I set Mioda up to fail! I helped that sniper line up his shot! I [tricked Akane's siblings] into going into the woods! I set Asahina up on a date that was meant to fail! I sent Saionji to that tea house knowing she'd run into trouble! I convinced [Sato] to try to kill [Natsumi] and frame you for it! I gave Pekoyama the key to Muku-nee's weapon case! And every time you save them! That's just impossible! And to add to this list of very annoying setbacks, I tried to stab you and you suddenly roll over in your sleep!
Makoto: Well, isn't that good though? I helped them and surprised you. Ikusaba said that you were bored. Granted, she didn't exactly say that you'd go to these extremes, but if I can surprise you, then you shouldn't be bored any more at least.
Junko: Silence! I, Junko, am the Ultimate Despair! My plans are like me, perfect!
Makoto: You can't really claim to be perfect, when someone as average as me can ruin your plans. Actually, can you even claim you do things for despair? Failure wouldn't bother you this much if it was.
    Junko: No! Stop! Fail! Die!
Makoto: You're supposedly bored, but you won't allow anything to surprise you. Of course, you'll be bored if you only allow for controlled situations.
Junko: Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!
Makoto: Now that I think about it, if people call me the Ultimate Hope and you can't predict me, doesn't that mean you've been wrong this whole time and that despair is boring?
  • The Tease: Chisa, Junko, and Akane become this once part of Makoto's harem. Chisa is more than willing to tease him, Junko enjoys snuggling up close to Makoto, and Akane is more than willing to inflict Marshmallow Hell on Makoto if she can.
  • Used to Be a Tomboy: Makoto's mother used to be a rugby player, but is now a much gentler woman, one that Hina considers to be a Yamato Nadeshiko. This proves useful as at this point, Hina was having severe insecurities about her femininity, and Mrs. Naegi relates her own experiences of how she used to be considered unfeminine by everyone but her future husband, and that Hina's attitude made her too hard on herself and that she already has a feminine side.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Makoto is able to settle down the mob outside of Hope's Peak, which she had filled with false protestors she had paid, Junko throws a massive tantrum and ends up regaining her past personalities, uncontrollably switching between them. When her attempt to cure herself by murdering Makoto fails, she finds her despair-centric philosophy and perfect self-image shattered by Makoto, resulting in her curling into a Troubled Fetal Position while sobbing before going catatonic.
