Fanfic / The Extended Unova Pokemon Guide

Go To

The Extended Unova Pokemon Guide is a massive Pokémon fanfiction, written as the brainchild of the fanfiction author The Gentalman Xerneas. The guide is written in universe by the quirky and well accomplished professor Fuhri (The good professor denies his name sounding like furry). In universe The guide is set up as an attempt at a professional work to teach, enlighten and warn people hoping to train Unova native Pokémon about the many trials, risks and delights of each Pokémon in national pokedex order. The guide is written in segmented chapters; each detailing the number, type, species, gender ratio, japanese name, human friendship level, description, personality, lifespan, diet, how to bond, love, battling, relationship with fellow Pokémon, warnings and summary. Each chapter is also ridden with many humorous quips said by Fuhri who stated during the guide stated that he is using an uneditable prototype which he speaks into. Therefore each thing read is essentially Fuhri's own unedited opinion, which leads to the guide feeling extra refreshing.

The guide can be found here, though it stopped updating in 2014, with its last chapter being about Stunfisk.

This Fanwork contains examples of:

  • 100% Heroism Rating: Nearly every species of Pokémon loves and respects Audino, due to how kind it is (including members of the Dangerous Seven). A human that abuses an Audino will probably be beaten up by a mob of very angry Pokémon.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Many species but especially the Pawniard/Bisharp.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Bianca somehow managed to capture a Chandelure, regarded as one of, if not the deadliest Pokémon in Unova.
  • Action Girl: Any species that are hotheaded and can have female members.
  • Animal Chick Magnet: Most of the cuter Pokémon, although anyone with an interest...
  • Author Avatar: Fuhri has been stated to share different opinions to the actual author but he still feels like an author avatar.
  • Badass Adorable: Many Pokémon; but in Fuhri's opinion Emolga is the physical representation of this trope.
  • Badass Crew: What a well treated team of maddeningly loyal Pokémon will become.
  • Berserk Button: Don't threaten the trainer that a Pokémon has feelings for. Better yet don't even looks at them. Fuhri has made it clear that most Pokémon will protect their trainers with violence if necassary. This is especially apparent with Scolipede.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: Most chapters are light hearted with Fuhri chattering away but a few chapters get awfully dark at times.
  • Character Death: Fuhri's beloved Meinfoo.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Most dark type Pokémon.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Whilst not quite "badass" levels, Stunfisk can and will electrocute you to death if you foolishly step on it. Not bad for a flat faced fish now is it.
  • Cute Bruiser: Any well trained cute Pokémon. Emolga for example.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Most dark and ghost types, although subverted in the case of Cofagrigus and Chandelure.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Befriending a Sewaddle takes time and patience, but it will be well worth it when it evolves into a loving, loyal and industrious Leavanny.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Jellicent are Pokémon who love spending time with their family, appreciate a good joke now and then, and are rarely, if ever, seen angry. The average Jellicent is also a Serial Killer who lives in a horrifying underwater castle with human and Pokémon skin as wallpaper and dines on human and Pokémon life energy for the sole reason that it tastes delicious.
  • The Dreaded: Scolipede for being powerful and murderous creatures that have haunted the region since time immemorial. They're so powerful they can take on legendary Pokémon and are extremely violent. Even tamed ones can all out yandere on their trainers.
    • In general, Unova has the Dangerous Seven, consisting of the seven deadliest Pokémon in the Unova Region. Seismitoad, Scolipede, Krookodile, Cofagrigus, Jellicent, Chandelure, and Hydreigon. Of the seven, Chandelure is deemed the most dangerous of all, due to it not being nowhere near as lenient as Seismitoad, Scolipede, or Krookodile, not being restricted to singular habitats like Cofagrigus or Jellicent, and being far more intelligent than the rampaging Hydreigon. It's noticeably one of two Pokémon regarded as national threats, the other being Hydreigon.
    • Everyone with half a brain is terrified of Vanilluxe. Any living thing within 5 meters of it is instantly and fatally frozen solid. Historically, three Vanilluxe accidentally killed an entire town of 5,404 people just by wandering into the settlement and freezing everyone to death. The only reason it's not the Dangerous Eighth is because it's not hostile and actually rather friendly; it just has no control over how ungodly cold it is.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Again Cofagrigus and Chandelure, being warped human spirits instead of Pokémon spirits.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: The monkey trio's hair colors match their elements.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: The Dangerous Seven have this in their ranks in regards to each other.
    • Seismitoad, Scolipede, and Krookodile, being less 'evil' and more 'ill-tempered', are categorized in a separate category from the other four Seven, as they're far less antagonistic if left alone and are generally disgusted by the other four's murderous habits.
    • Jellicent, despite being a Serial Killer that literally papers the walls of its underwater castle in human skin, is absolutely repulsed by the fact that Cofagrigus and Chandelure tamper with the human soul.
    • Even Cofagrigus has this reaction to Chandelure, as Chandelure breaks the rule that all ghosts, even Cofagrigus follows: "Respect the dead, both body and soul." Cofagrigus may warp humans to make them into Yamask, but Chandelure outright incinerates the soul.
  • Everyone Is Bi: Made pretty clear throughout the guide with a few notable exceptions, such as Gothitelle.
  • Fantasy Kitchen Sink: The world of Pokémon with too many examples to list.
  • Hated by All: The Litwick line is feared and despised by all, due to how vicious and dangerous they are. All Pokémon will try to stomp out Litwick on sight, and even the other members of the Dangerous Seven are disgusted by Chandelure's destruction of innocent souls.
  • Hate Sink: Chandelure. First, it's so dangerous that it's one of the few Pokémon that trainers are advised to flee on site as it can instantly kill you if you're within eight meters. Secondly, it is so incredibly vile that even it's pre-evolutions despise it as it gleefully breaks the one rule all Ghost Types adhere to. Even Ghetsis found it to be too dangerous to bother with and the one trainer who has successfully trained one, Shauntal, keeps it in its Poké Ball at all times and has enough dampeners put on it that it's only as dangerous as a Litwick. The guide even notes that if by some miracle a trainer does catch one, the rest of their Pokémon will either abandon them for their own safety or attack out of some perceived betrayal.
  • I Hate Past Me: Swanna who evolved from Ducklett remember their days of mistreating their trainer, and are filled with regret, sometimes to the point of self-loathing.
  • "Instant Death" Radius: Chandelure is noted to be able to instantly kill anyone, human or Pokémon, within an eight meter radius of itself.
  • Interspecies Friendship: How humanity has survived.
  • Interspecies Romance: A lot of examples. Fuhri supports human-Pokémon marriage, telling his readers how their Pokémon are going to love them and all, and even seems to have had a relationship with his Meinfoo until an unfortunate incident.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Deerling gets very, very horny during its mating season. It will even try to get some from its human Trainer.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: A Yamask treated badly enough by its human Trainer will evolve into a Cofagrigus out of pure hate, and will take the first opportunity it gets to kill said Trainer and turn them into another of its kind.
Fuhri: If you somehow treated your Yamask so poorly that it evolved into Cofagrigus in your care; run. Run as far as you can and don't stop running until you reach the safest place possible. Your vengeful Cofagrigus will not stop searching for you until you are dead. And a Yamask.
  • Raised by Wolves: Leavanny have such a strong maternal instinct that they will raise abandoned human babies.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil / Who's Laughing Now?: The reason behind wild Eelektross's brutal and heartless personality. As a Tynamo and Eelektrik, it was constantly hunted and under threat of death by pretty much anything and everything, and when it evolves into Eelektross, everything in the general area tries to kill it before it can reach water.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Frillish's entry notes that there exist Frillish who are horrified by the idea of hunting humans and Pokemon, often protesting when their fellows go out to hunt. Some even go so far as to rescue humans under attack by other Frillish, returning them to shore. This also extends to Jellicent - there are some who live peaceful lives, with no intent to harm humans whatsoever, and may even hide them from other dangerous Jellicent.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Swanna and Escavalier are two major examples.
  • The Power of Friendship: How some Pokémon evolve. Also how to tame a lot of the more dangerous Pokémon, and what lets domesticated versions of the Dangerous Seven exist (mainly by bonding with them before they've evolved).
