Everyone Can See It / Fan Works

  • Advice and Trust:
    • Subverted. Shinji and Asuka used to be unable to see it, but in the beginning of the fic they at last realized each other's feelings. However, they are keeping their relationship secret out of fear of being separated, so they pretend they are still stuck in that phase, and everyone believes they cannot see it despite it being obvious.
      • Misato particularly thinks it is painfully obvious but they are oblivious and she must help them to realize it.
    • Played straight with Touji/Hikari. Asuka lampshades the absurdity of it and Shinji points out what they were doing the same thing.
Asuka told him about Hikari’s raging crush on Touji. She’d been only slightly surprised when Shinji mentioned Touji’s matching infatuation with the petite Class Rep that he thought no one knew about. Asuka had laughed at the foolishness of the two of them liking each other but failing to see it was mutual, just dancing around each other for months… until Shinji had given her a smirk and a stare.
  • In the Kim Possible fanfic Aftermath of WannaWeep, nearly everyone thought Kim and Ron were already a couple and wonder why they haven't dated. Even Tara and Josh, whom Ron and Kim are dating respectively, believed they deserve each other.
  • The Amazing Spider-Luz in: Across the Owl-Verse!: The mutual crush that Luz and Amity are developing on each other is fairly obvious to others around them. Eventually, their closest friends and family openly encourage the two of them to get together during Grom.
  • Aunt Salem: Pyrrha's interest in Jaune is so blatantly obvious that everyone assumes they're dating. In fact, when he asks Weiss out, her initial objection is that she refuses to be party to cheating on his girlfriend. Jaune, on the other hand, assumes Pyrrha is just a tactile person, because she has never been shy about informing him about how they are going to study or train from now on. If she wanted to date him, she would have said "we're dating," and that would be that. Nora and Ren are a platonic variant: everyone can see their devotion to Jaune.
  • In the Avantasia Protag AU series, everyone knows Gabriel and Elderane have feelings for each other except themselves. They think they're best friends. Even when they start realizing their feelings, they don't believe the other feels the same. When they do eventually confess, they decide they have to tell Gabriel's family and all three of them at the same time respond "we know".
"You don't hide it well." Aaron said flatly. "You hold hands like...everywhere."
  • Becoming a True Invader: Zim and Gaz's attraction to each other, beneath the constant bickering, is obvious to everyone (except Dib, who is willfully oblivious to it).
  • The main pairing of Beyond Heroes: Of Sunshine and Red Lyrium is gradually recognized by everyone who spends more than five minutes with them. The only reason it takes them more than thirty chapters to get together is the fact that Varric doesn't know.
  • The Bolt Chronicles: Implied regarding Bolt and Mittens and their attraction for each other in "The Ship." Rhino and Penny's mom definitely suspect they have fallen for each other, and Penny has at least some inkling.
  • The Child of Love: Subverted. Most characters, including Hikari, think it is evident to everyone Asuka and Shinji like each other; but others, like Misato, do not realize Asuka’s feelings towards Shinji go beyond friendship.
  • Child of the Storm has Loki/Sif. Even Amicable Ex Thor (for Sif) and Fandral can see it — and ship it. They themselves are aware of their feelings for each other, but Loki's density and obliviousness to Sif's feelings for him, along Sif's lack of patience for said density are why they aren't together yet. It gets to the point where the post-script of a letter from a future Harry contains a rather irritable exhortation for Loki to open his damn eyes, and Fandral literally forces them to kiss.
    • There's also Harry and Carol. By the time Ghosts of the Past starts, literally everyone, even people (or monsters) who met them five minutes before, can tell that they're more than Just Friends. Harry, though, sums up their mutual response in a short speech on the Just Friends quotes page - in brief, they both admit that they love each other, and more than platonically, but they also know that they're not ready to go further because both of them have epic issues and if they do get together, they want it to be because they're ready for it. Which they do, in chapter 46.
  • Children of an Elder God: Everyone knew what Shinji and Asuka were falling for each other. However, Shinji kept saying "It isn't like that!" and Asuka kept protesting "He's just a friend!" whenever someone brought the subject up, until they got together.
  • Played with in Children of Time, as Beth Lestrade is very aware of her feelings for Sherlock Holmes and quickly confides in Sally Sparrow. Ironically, the Great Detective seems to be the only one who can't see that Beth is in love with him — indeed, is quite uncertain of his own feelings for her. His actions make that painfully clear.
  • Code Prime: By the time R2 starts, practically everybody in the Autobot-Black Knight Alliance can see the attraction between Lelouch and Kallen. Kallen's mother Akari even jokingly refers to Lelouch as her future son-in-law at one point.
  • The Kingdom Hearts/Pokémon: The Series crossover Colosseum of the Heart applies this to both pairings: Serena's lingering crush on Ash is obvious to everyone except him (though to Ash's credit, he has realised in hindsight that she had feelings for him during their Kalos journey). Even Sora picks up on it quickly. Meanwhile, the trainers immediately pick up on Sora's crush on Kairi just from how he describes her.
  • A Crown of Stars: Everyone could see that there was something between Shinji and Asuka… but Shinji and Asuka themselves. Hikari lampshades it:
Hikari: There is something going on! I knew you two cared about each other! Everyone could see it!
  • In the Invader Zim fanfic Curiosity, everyone can tell that Zim and Dib have a thing for each other. When they agree to pair up on Valentine's Day, it turns out that their entire class placed bets on when they would hook up.
GIR: I always knews it wud work out wit' 'em!
Gaz: About time, you idiots. About damn time.
Random Girl: I KNEW IT! Retch, you SO owe me ten bucks!
Retch: What?! Billy, you said there was no way I could lose this bet!
Billy: Aw, come on, dude! How was I supposed to know the two would hook up before the end of the year?
    (entire class explodes into chaos)
Ms. Bitters: STUDENTS! In case you're forgetting, I was the one who put the idea [about the bet] in your worthless heads.
  • In A Dance on the Mats, Rainbow feels a crushing desire to defeat Anon. The other Rainbooms can see that she is deeply attracted to Anon even when she can't.
  • The Darwin Chronicles: Before she and Scott Summers got together officially, Jean Grey claimed time and again that she loved Scott like a little brother. Nobody believed her. According to Warren, even total strangers could tell she wanted him.
Warren: See, Jean was in a bad mood even before we left for the fair because Dr. Lensherr — this was before he went Magneto on us — had been making chicken hawk comments. He knew she was interested in Scott — strangers on the street knew she was interested in Scott — and he was having conniptions.
  • Invoked by Weiss in Describing The Series Via References, where she pretends to believe Jaune's dating Pyrrha in order to get him to stop trying to ask her out. Ironically, she doesn't really believe this, and is stunned to learn that her actions actually did result in the two of them getting together.
  • Discovery (Marvelouswrites): Well, maybe not everyone, but Rex all but suspected that Anakin and Padme were in love with each other and romantically involved to some extent.
  • In Entirely Out of Spite, Lumine barely needs a few minutes watching Ajax and Zhongli interacting together before deciding they're married. When Ajax actually proposes to Zhongli, the whole town is floored because they assumed the happy couple had already done the deed a long time ago.
  • The Equestrian Wind Mage: By Season 2, it's obvious to everyone that Vaati and Luna are infatuated with each other. However, both are hesitant to act on their feelings, especially Vaati, who can't quite get around what he perceives as bestiality.
  • Evangelion 303: The only ones who did not realize what was going between Shinji and Asuka were Shinji and Asuka themselves (up to chapter 5).
  • Fairy May Cry: After Lisanna returns from Edolas, everybody in Fairy Tail can see the attraction between her and Natsu.
    • Bisca and Alzack like in canon. Even Modeus can see the attraction between the two after being with the guild for nearly a week.
  • In Fairy Without Wings Kalina, Lucy, Mirajane, and possibly even Jellal are already jumping on board with noticing that Lelouch and Erza might think of each other as more than Just Friends.
  • FFS, I Believe in You: Sidon's infatuation with Link is considered quite obvious and common knowledge by the other Zora — in fact, Sidon himself is one of the last people to cotton on to the fact that he's crushing on Link, only becoming consciously aware of it when he catches his soldiers making bets on when he'll confess.
  • This trope comes up in In The Fledgling Year, in which Cor and Aravis continually refuse to admit their feelings for each other, while Cor’s Unwanted Harem drifts around in the background, not wanting to come between them, and Hana actually rebukes Aravis for even suggesting that anyone besides herself marry Cor.
  • Fractures (ATLA): Sokka muses to himself that everyone can see Aang and Katara's blossoming romance.
  • All over the place in the Tsubasa -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE- and ×××HOLiC fanfic Freefall, for at least three different pairings.
  • In the Supergirl (2015) fic Future Shock, everyone who knows either of them can see that Cat and Kara have it bad for each other.
  • Hetalia: Axis Powers fanfic Gankona, Unnachgiebig, Unità: England claimed this much to his frustration. Not that he wasn't happy for Germany, Italy, and Japan of course.
"The three of you are idiots." Face-palm. "The choice should be obvious."
England shook his head. "I saw this coming from a mile away. I always knew you three were too close to be just friends." He stomped his foot. "I KNEW IT!"
  • Ghosts of Evangelion: Asuka refuses to believe that Shinji likes her... until Touji and Hikari inform her that EVERYONE thinks he's in love with her.
Hikari: Shinji confessed to her this morning.
    Touji: And that's bad?
Hikari: She doesn't think he means it. She thinks it's an act or something, to make sure she doesn't cause anyone any trouble.
Asuka: That's exactly it! If you could only see the way he acts toward me...
Touji: Uh, Soryu... Look, you know I'm not exactly your biggest fan and all, but I think you're kinda off base here.
    Asuka: Then you're an idiot.
Touji: No, seriously, what you're saying doesn't make sense. I spend more time with the guy than anyone, apart from you I guess, and he never talks about you embarrassing him or anything. He just wants to make you happy.
Asuka: Of course he does. If he makes me happy he'll get praise, and then he'll feel like he's worth a damn. Same old Shinji.
Hikari: Asuka, that's a really cynical way to look at it.
Asuka: What are you talking about?
Hikari: Well, it's true that he's always a little concerned or upset when he's talking about you, since that's just the way you two are... but even so, when he talks about something good that happened between you two his face just lights up, like he—
Touji: Yeah! He'll get this stupid grin on his face, like he's the happiest guy on Earth.
Asuka: That's... that's insane. You guys are just defending him!
Touji: You think it's just us?
Hikari: Everyone knows about it. It's, ah... it's kinda obvious.
Asuka: No, he's just... I mean, it's Shinji, he... Everyone?
    Hikari: Well...
  • The God Empress of Ponykind has Shining Armor and Cadence. Celestia picks up on their crushes right away, and in the last chapter Twilight casually asks them when they're going out. Even Luna is able to pick up on their feelings when she speaks with Cadence in The Warmistress Of Equestria and actively encourages Cadence to pursue Shining.
  • The Greatest of Them All: Peter is the only one oblivious to the fact that he's a Chick Magnet, with many of the women in his life being obviously interested in him.
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfic Guide Me Home: Pretty much the whole Southern Water Tribe team can see how Hakoda and Ursa feel for each other a mile away in Qwi-Xux's fanfic.
  • In Harry and the Shipgirls, Naka and Harder are such close friends that they have no problem taking showers together. Everyone who sees the Sendai and Gato thinks it's only a matter of time, but the duo keep wondering why people say they act like a married couple.
  • In the Bleach fanfic series Heirverse, Rangiku, the Rumor mill, Kyouka and Shinsou know hell Yamamoto probably knew Aizen and Gin were in love before they accepted it.
  • HERZ: In the past, Shinji and Asuka were unable to realize each other’s feelings even though everyone else did. That blindness nearly caused the end of the world and nearly got them killed several years before the beginning of the story.
  • In Home (Aragem), pretty much everyone knows that Hordak and Entrapta are at an intimate stage in their relationship, though they have not gone to third base.
  • Hotspring Souls!: It's painfully obvious that the Chosen Undead and Rhea have a thing for each other. Even Garl Vinland, whom they've just met, points this out. Solaire even goes so far as to make it his personal "mission" to get the two to hook up.
  • In Hunting Series Dean and Neo being oblivious to each other in highschool, while Bobby, John and everybody else already knows.
  • In A Sky Of A Million Stars: Midoriya Izuku and Bakugou Katsuki have blatant crushes on each other, though it doesn't become obvious until they've long since repaired their friendship.
  • Jackie Chan Adventures: Olympian Journey: While Jade is seemingly oblivious to it, Jimmy and Rachel can both easily tell that Simone has a crush on her.
  • Judgement Day (Dragon Ball): Goku’s friends are for the most part not surprised to learn he’s in a relationship with Vegeta. Krillin and Android 18 even had a bet over whether the two were a romantic couple or just friends with benefits.
  • In Kira, Sweetheart Misa and Rem notice how close L and Light are before they do (or are willing to admit it):
Rem: I take it that Kira means something to you, human.
L: Yes... Kira is the one I am sworn to defeat.
Rem: No. He means more to you than that. You're just like Misa.
    L: WHAT?
Rem: When she thinks of him it makes her cheeks go all red too.
  • Ladybug in a Half Shell: Alya has known April, Casey, and Donatello (through a speaker and camera) for only a few hours and she quickly recognizes a Love Triangle in progress.
  • Subverted in the Yu-Gi-Oh! fic Late Night BlueEyes. Seto's 11-year-old brother knows - even before Kisara and Seto start dating - that they're attracted to each other, but not because the two are obviously affectionate. (In fact, they're quite the opposite.) He knows because the number of people Seto voluntarily spends time with is just that few.
  • The Last of Us Series (Once Upon a Time, The Last of Us): Everyone that Emma and Regina meet instantly realize that the two have the hots for each other and regularly comment on it.
  • In the Kim Possible fic "Law and Disorder", when Kim is arrested and sent to prison for stealing equipment from Professor Dementor, she ends up sharing her relationship-related woes with fellow inmates DNAmy and 'Tiny'. However, although Kim was planning a date with Josh Mankey before her arrest, Tiny informs Kim that the person she's really dating is Ron (who is currently planning a date with fellow cheerleader Tara), and DNAmy admits that she thought Kim and Ron were already a couple based on how they interact while on missions, helping Kim realise that she at least has feelings for Ron.
  • Learning To Bloom:
    • Jaune's crush on Pyrrha is very obvious. Pyrrha knew of it before even he himself did.
    • Implied with Pyrrha and Weiss. Even Jaune and Neptune felt there was something between the two.
  • In Master, Pokémon?, Ash and Latias. They're clearly smitten with one another, though neither of them has sufficient relationship knowledge to actually notice for quite some time. Everyone else considers it blindingly obvious.
  • In May I Have This Dance?, Pyrrha's parents guess that she's in love with her best friend Weiss and question her on it even before Pyrrha tells Weiss herself.
  • Midnight Star: The Frozen Empire: Everyone can see Sky Slicer really likes Copper Spark. Even Copper Spark himself grows to like Sky Back. However, when Copper starts showing he's willing to reciprocate, she acts belligerent and tries to put him down every time. He's thankfully willing to wait as long as it takes for her to realize how she really feels, though it takes Copper nearly dying for her to go through with it. In the epilogue, they finally get married two months after Midnight and Wind Slicer do.
  • Mirror's Image: Everyone can see Prince Blueblood's crush on Twilight Sparkle. Everyone except Twilight Sparkle, that is.
  • The Monkey D. Haru Series: Haru (Harry) and Ginny gradually develop feelings for each other over the course of Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban, and are only an "unofficial" couple because they're simply too young for that sort of relationship yet.
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion: Genocide: When Shinji under duress publicly admits to Asuka that he cares about her, Asuka is rendered speechless, and can only gather herself enough to wonder "He cares?" out loud. Hikari nonchalantly responds that it was always rather obvious.
  • Not the intended use (Zantetsuken Reverse): Everyone either thinks that Soma and Mina are in a relationship, or is surprised to find out they aren't. Many members of the main cast are active Shippers On Deck, with Hammer in particular teasing Soma over his inability to confess. At another point Leon gives Soma a particularly long list of all the excuses his family members have used to visit their definitely-not-girlfriends just to point out how obvious it is.
  • In Buzz Lightyear of Star Command fic One Hundred Days, it seems that even the bad guys can tell that Buzz Lightyear and Mira Nova are made for each other.
  • The One I Love Is...: Everyone could see Asuka liked Shinji and vice versa. Everyone but Shinji, of course. When Hikari told him that Asuka liked him and she believed that they were a couple, he was genuinely shocked.
  • Paradise: Luna's crush on Chosen Oak is a poorly kept secret in their herd.
  • Captain Rex in Precipice brings up that Anakin's and Padme's feelings for each other were way too obvious to anyone in the same room as them. Anakin even makes fun of himself for how bad he was at hiding his and Padme's relationship.
  • Almost everyone at Hope's Peak in The PreDespair Kids can tell that Rina is crushing hard on Peko. Well, everyone other then Peko herself.
  • Pretender has Robin/Frederick. All of the Shephards with the exception of Chrom (and he eventually finds out as well) know that Frederick has feelings for Robin and think they should get together. However, Frederick doesn't act upon his feelings at first because of Robin's feelings for Chrom.
  • A Possible Encounter for a Phantom: Danny Fenton's crush on Kim Possible is so obvious that she was able to figure out he was Danny Phantom because he kept acting like that around her.

  • Rainbooms and Royalty has Rainbow Dash's crush on Shining Armor.
  • RainbowDoubleDash's Lunaverse:
    • During the visit to the regular FiM universe during "Crisis on Two Equestrias", damn near everyone in Ponyville knows Lyra has a crush on BonBon but can't spit it out. Pinkie Pie even has a special party planned for if and when they ever get around to it.
    • Pretty much everyone can see Diamond Tiara is crushing hard on Scootaloo... except Scootaloo herself, no matter how much of a Tsundere DT is to her.
    • In the non-continuity story "Nightmares Yet to Come", every pony in Ponyville's weather patrol knows Cloud Kicker has a thing for Blossomforth (it's described as one of the weather patrol's "worst kept secrets"). About the only one who doesn't seem to know is Blossomforth herself, since Cloud Kicker is nigh-unable to talk to her (and yes, the question how then she's interacted with Blossomforth enough for the crush to even get started is asked). As Cloud Kicker explains, someone who's part of an evil not-cult telling you they've got a crush on you is usually a turn-off.
  • In My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fanfic Daring DONE, this happens to in-universe characters Daring Do and Sugar Song, where author Twilight Velvet is forced to listen to "TWO WHOLE DAYS OF LISTENING TO LUNA RAMBLING ABOUT A ROMANTIC SUBPLOT THAT DOESN'T EXIST", only to find out that even her own proofreader ships them.
...I thought the romantic subplot was on purpose? Surely Sugar Song and Daring Do are going to get together by the end of this new book? Mom, it's not even subtle. How are you missing the romantic connotations in your own work? Do you have any idea why they're so popular in the first place?
AND THERE'S NO ROMANTIC SUBTEXT IN MY BOOKS. STOP OVERANALYZING EVERYTHING YOU READ. DARING DO HAS A NICE HAT AND SHE FIGHTS MONSTERS, THAT'S IT. THAT'S ALL THERE IS.
  • In Danny Phantom fanfic Resurrected Memories: Danny and Ember/Amberline’s feelings for each other are rather obvious to all those around them. Even Zoe and Christopher, Ember’s new bandmates, are able to tell that the two have feelings for each other early in the story.

  • Rules: Elijah/L and Lily. The Unresolved Sexual Tension between them is so strong that their respective best friends, Light and Charlie, who hate each other, try to get along for their sakes, because they know their relationship is an inevitability. Ironically, this leads to Light and Charlie becoming a couple before they do.
  • Runaway Wind: Several reactions from Leon and Yuffie make it clear that they've picked up on Ventus and Naminé's mutual attraction. Cemented when Yuffie calls the two "Lovebirds", at which point Ven, who has just had his own Love Epiphany, realises she'll never let them hear the end of it.
  • The Saga of the Last Two Saiyans: When Goku confesses to Whis about being in love with Vegeta, Whis tells him everyone (except Vegeta) already knows.
  • The Second Try: Humorously inverted in this Peggy Sue fic. The rest of the cast assume this is the case with Asuka and Shinji. However, no one has any idea that not only are they a couple, but they are also lovers, have been married for over 5 years, and raised a child together.
  • Several of their companions take a decidedly mirthful view of the fact that they're all very aware that Alistair is hopelessly smitten with Elissa in Shadow and Rose.
  • Played with in The Dresden Files in Shifting Desires. When Andi claims that Harry and Molly are "a thing", on the basis that she saw them snuggling together, Georgia is skeptical - not because she thinks the idea is unlikely, but because they've always shared that level of physical intimacy.
  • In Skyhold Academy Yearbook, everyone is very much aware that Cullen is crazy about Evvy even if he Cannot Spit It Out. For some of their colleagues, it actually starts to become a bit annoying to see him so deep in denial; Evvy herself is more frustrated by him being the Master of the Mixed Message. Fortunately, this is limited only to the first story in the series, and once he finally does tell her the truth, they transition into Happily Married.
  • The Smeet Series: By the time of Vindictive, it becomes clear that Masouri's crush on Echo is obvious to everyone except Echo herself.

  • Son of the Sannin: In addition to the tradition of having everyone in a 25 mile radius be able to pick up on Hinata's crush on Naruto, most people (sans Naruto) seem to be aware of the true nature of Kiba and Tamaki's constant bickering.
  • Larissa and Sofia from The Surprising Adventures of a Glaceon in Unova go through a whole lot of Les Yay over the course of their friendship, so by the time they finally realize their feelings for each other and have The Big Damn Kiss, it's a running gag that no one they tell is even the least bit surprised.

  • Thundercracker and Skywarp from Rewrite the Stars, part of the Thundercracker's Glory series. Glory sees it and immediately sets about trying to get them to admit it. It's implied that Megatron and Soundwave know too, but don't care so long as they aren't neglecting their duties in the process.
  • To Hell and Back (Arrowverse):
    • Everyone and their mother can tell Oliver and Laurel have something going on. This includes poor Tommy, who has to watch his crush for years fall in love with his recently-returned best friend. Even so, it takes over sixty chapters for them to finally become a couple.
    • It's implied that Oliver was in a similar situation with Nyssa during his time with the League of Assassins. But, as this was the League, people knew better than to talk about it. Oliver and Nyssa themselves never acted on it, partly because they were oblivious and partly because Oliver knew that he was going to return to Starling City.
  • Almost everyone in Transformers: MHA can see that Izuku and Kyoka are clearly crushing on each other. This includes Izuku's mom, Inko, All Might, Momo, Bumblebee, Recovery Girl, Marissa, etc. Hell, even Bakugo caught on to the fact.

  • Weiss Reacts: It's blatantly clear that Weiss and Ruby have feelings for each other from the first chapter. Weiss refuses to admit it until the Music Festival arc. But when she does....
    • Lucina Reacts: Lucina and Robin clearly have feelings for each other from the get-go as well, to the extent that even Robin's daughter Morgan is sure Lucina is her mother. However, they do not confess until Cordelia, of all people, forces them to by giving them a "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
