Sony Music Entertainment is a division of the electronics firm Sony that is responsible for managing their collection of record labels. Originally founded in 1929 as the American Record Corporation, its current name dates to 1991 when Sony retired the CBS name. The group's oldest label, Columbia Records, dates back to 1887.

In 2004, Sony merged with Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) to become Sony BMG. When Sony bought out BMG's stake in the record company in 2008, the "Sony Music Entertainment" name was revived.

Its video game production seems to be defunct as of 2011. It also owns Sony/ATV Music Publishing, one of the world's largest music publishers. Not to be confused with Sony Music Entertainment Japan, which is directly owned by the Sony Group.
