    In General
  • Dub Name Change: In the original Japanese, the various Field Spells representing their planets shared a Theme Naming denoting what number each planet was. In the English translation, this is changed to having each planet named "[Word beginning with P] Planet [x]".
    • "Fourth Broken World - Reiphobia" became "Primitive Planet Reichphobia".
    • "First Broken World - Pelreino" became "Primeval Planet Perlereino".
    • "Sixth Broken World - Paraisos" became "Pressured Planet Wraitsoth".
    • "Fifth Broken World - Calarium" became "Peaceful Planet Calarium".
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: In comparison to past stories, the effects of the cards reflect the events they're depicting much more closely.
  • Recurring Element: Each archetype always has two features that ties them together outside of Visas Starfrost.
    • A leader with "heart" in their name, that physically resembles Visas Starfrost to an extent, and possesses an evolved form based on a Special Summon mechanic. They are all Level 4 Warrior monsters with 1500 ATK and 2100 DEF, which is the inverse of Visas Starfrost's statline of 2100 ATK and 1500 DEF.
    • A Field Spell representing their home planets with similar names.
  • Theme Naming: The various planets are represented by a group of Field Spells, each one sharing the naming scheme of "[#] Broken World = [x]". This is lost in the English version due to a Dub Name Change. Additionally, each archetype tied to this lore has a name that evoke a negative emotion or feeling like fear, sorrow or wrath.
    • The Scareclaw's homeworld is represented by "Fourth Broken World - Reiphobia".
    • The Tearlament's homeworld is initially represented by "First Broken World - Pelreino". After Reinoheart's defeat, it's instead represented by "Tearlaments Perlegia".
    • The Kashtira's homeworld is represented by "Sixth Broken World - Paraisos".
    • The Mannadium's homeworld is represented by "Fifth Broken World - Calarium".
  • Uniformity Exception:
    • To highlight how the first three "heart" monsters don't truly belong with each of their archetypes, they all have different types and attributes than their "servants", which extends to their evolved forms, each one being a different Extra Deck Summoning Method to contrast Visas being a Main Deck monster.
      • The Scareclaws are a series of EARTH Beast types. Reichheart meanwhile is a DARK Warrior, his evolved form Tri-Heart and Super-Deformed form Light-Heart being DARK Beast-Warrior Link monsters.
      • The Tearlaments are a series of DARK Aqua types. Reinoheart meanwhile is a WATER Warrior. And while his evolved form Kaleido-Heart becomes DARK attributed and is a Fusion monster, he changes to a Fiend type, which is contrasted by Kitkallos aiding Visas Starfrost and defeating him, retaining her Aqua typing but going from DARK to WATER attribute as Rulkallos afterwards to signify her becoming the new leader of the Tearlaments.
      • The Kashtira are a series of Psychic monsters, their initial three members being WATER, WIND, and EARTH attributed. Riseheart meanwhile is a FIRE Warrior, his evolved form Arise-heart being a DARK Machine Xyz monster.
      • Downplayed by the Mannadium, as they are a series of Fairy monsters with different Attributes. Riumheart is a LIGHT Warrior, like Visas Starfrost, and his evolved form, Prime-Heart, is a LIGHT Fairy Synchro monster.
    • The Mannadium act as this to the other Archetypes overall, in particular their "hearts" compared to Riumheart.
      • The other three archetypes depict their main deck monsters as being subserviant to their hearts. The Mannadium however are more the wards of Riumheart, as Riumheart acts to protect them from Vicious Astraloud and acts more like their caretaker.
      • The three "hearts" resemble darker or twisted versions of Visas Starfrost, most prevalent with Riseheart looking like a flat out Evil Counterpart to him, and share similar cases of Red Right Hand. Riumheart however resembles Visas Starfrost the most, looking identical to him outside of an ethereal golden glow, and possesses unique legs rather than a Red Right Hand.
      • The super modes of the other three "hearts" have them becoming more demonic in appearance, changing to the DARK attribute and looking horrific. Riumheart's super mode, "Mannadium Prime-heart", is much more angelic in appearance, resembling a Knight in Shining Armor, and retains Riumhearts LIGHT attribute.
      • Visas' reclaiming the hearts of the others ends up corrupting him. Visas' merging with Riumheart restores his sanity however, allowing him to become Visas Amritara and unite the remaining worlds as one.
      • The other three archetypes can function without the need for Visas Starfrost, representing how, lorewise, Visas is largely fighting them while trying to claim the "hearts". The Mannadium meanwhile are designed to work with Visas Starfrost, having effects that trigger upon destruction and focusing on Synchro Summoning, befitting Visas' destruction based Special Summon effect and being a Tuner, and representing how, lorewise, Riumheart is the one who stops Vicious Astraloud's rampage and restores Visas to sanity.
  • Time Master: Veda Kalarcanum is strongly implied to control the flow of time. Its Pendulum Effect gives it 3 counters every time a monster is destroyed, much like how the major phases on a clock progress in quarters, and when the "clock strikes 12" (Kalarcanum gaining 12 counters) it can Special Summon itself from your Pendulum Zone. Once on the field it can effectively skip your opponent's turn if they attempt to summon a monster from the Extra Deck by banishing 12 cards from your hand, field and/or Graveyard.

Archetypes

    Scareclaw
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reichheart.png
Scareclaw is a Link archetype with an emphasis on Link Summons and placing monsters in Defense Position. The Main Deck monsters can all Special Summon themselves to the same or adjacent column of a Scareclaw monster, allowing the archetype to easily swarm the field. The Level 3 monsters are EARTH Beasts that provide bonuses to a Scareclaw monster in the Extra Monster Zone.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: According to the Valuable Book, the Beast monsters are all the living embodiments of various fears, hence the name Scareclaw.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Belone grants a Scareclaw Link monster in the Extra Monster Zone the ability to inflict piercing damage.
  • Fear Tropes: The Level 3s are named and designed after different phobias. Reichheart meanwhile has control over fear, Tri-heart being a result of his absorbing other fears into himself to fight Visas, and Visas later gaining the same power after absorbing Reichheart, using it to free Kitkallos.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: Alternative prevents the opponent from summoning Link Monsters, yet Scareclaw are rather dependent on their own Link Monster.
  • Irony: Scareclaw is a Link archetype that puts monsters in Defense Position, yet Link Monsters have no way to be put into Defense Position.
  • No-Sell: Tri-Heart is unaffected by the effects of Defense Position monsters which pairs nicely with its first effect to change all monsters on the field to Defense Position.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Scareclaw Light-Heart is a DARK attribute monster, not LIGHT.
  • Support Party Member: The Level 3s have 0 ATK and have no way to damage the opponent. They exist solely to summon and then power up a Scareclaw Link Monster.

    Tearlaments
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reinoheart.png
Tearlaments is an archetype of mostly DARK Aqua monsters that focus on Fusion Summons and self-milling. All of its members possess effects that either send cards from your Deck to the Graveyard, or activate when a card effect sends them to the Graveyard. Most of the monsters are capable of Special Summoning themselves, and can also perform Fusion Summons when they are sent this way, by returning themselves and any other materials from the hand, field, or Graveyard to the bottom of the Deck.

  • Back from the Dead: Reinoheart, Kaleido-Heart and Rulkallos each have the ability to revive themselves from the Graveyard if they were sent there by a card effect. Meanwhile, Kitkallos can send a monster the player controls to the Graveyard to revive a Tearlaments.
  • The Dog Bites Back: As detailed on Tearlaments Cryme, Kitkallos, who beforehand was merely one of his many tortured and brainwashed subjects, ultimately rises against Reinoheart's tyranny and impales him from behind as he fought Visas Starfrost.
  • Exact Words: Similar to the Dark World archetype, the Tearlament archetype has effects that trigger when they get sent to Graveyard by a card effect, so anything that gets sent to the Graveyard as cost will not be able to trigger its effect. The Tearlament cards are all worded so that they send cards to the Graveyard as part of their effects rather than cost.
  • Fusion Dance:
    • Kaleido-Heart is one of Reinoheart and two other Tearlament monsters, using them as Power Boosters.
    • Rulkallos is one of Kitkallos and another Tearlament, likewise using it as a Power Booster.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: The "Valuable Book" describes the non-Heart Tearlaments as "mermaids", but aside from the Aqua-typing and frilled ears, they don't exactly look like traditional mermaids. Closest they get is their sleeves and anklets can make it look their extremities have fins, but otherwise they more resemble traditional water nymphs.
  • Power at a Price: Several Tearlaments cards have useful effects that require the player to send cards from their hand, field or deck to the GY afterward.
  • Power Nullifier: Sulliek can, if the player controls Visas Starfrost or a Tearlaments monster, be used to negate the effect of an opposing monster but in exchange will force the player to send a monster they control to the Graveyard.
  • Status Buff: Controlling either Perlegia or Primeval Planet Perlereino will grant Fusion Monsters and Tearlaments monsters an extra 500 ATK.

    Kashtira
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shangrila_8.png

Kashtira is an archetype of Level 7 Psychic monsters that focus on Xyz Summons and disrupting the opponent's plays and banishing cards face-down.

  • Dyson Sphere: Kashtira Shangri-Ira appears to be one.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: Although Visas and Kitkallos defeat Reinoheart, the Kashtiras take advantage of this moment to kidnap Reinoheart, who Riseheart absorbs.
  • Planet Spaceship: Shangri-Ira is big enough to encompass an entire planet.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Kashtira Riseheart and Shangri-Ira are both primarily red and black, and they're the main villains of the storyline.

    Mannadium
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/manadome.png

Mannadium is an archetype of mostly Fairy monsters that focus on Synchro Summons, and destroying their own monsters to gain advantage. Unlike the other Visas Starfrost-adjacent archetypes, which primarily support themselves, Mannadium primarily supports Visas himself as well as monsters with 1500 ATK/2100 DEF, which includes all of Visas's counterparts.

  • Armed Legs: Unlike the other "heart" counterparts, Riumheart does not have a unique Red Right Hand. Instead, Riumheart has unique, armored legs, which is emphasized on his card artwork. And based on the artwork of Mannadium Reframing, Riumheart and Prime-heart are implied to utilize kicks in battle.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: According to Prime-Heart's concept art, "Its arm can transform into an energy blade supplied by the aura." Riumheart could do the same.
  • Diving Kick: In the card artwork, Mannadium Reframing is a powerful divekick done by Mannadium Prime-Heart on Vicious Astraloud.
  • Light Is Good: Consists mostly of LIGHT monsters, and they're shown opposing the monstrous Vicious Astraloud.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: The main deck Mannadium, outside of Riumheart, are all Fairy type monsters. Visually however, they all resemble spheres hanging from a tree, each sphere depicting a more peaceful version of one of the various worlds with a chibi-esq figure on it, the artwork of "Mannadium Imagining" depicting Riumheart watching over them. According to the Valuable Book, this is because they are balls of energy born from the tree of Calarium cleansing the negative energy Visas had been absorbing from each world. Specifically:
    • Fearless depicts Primitive Planet Reichphobia, home of the Scareclaws.
    • Meek depicts Primeval Planet Perlereino, home of the Tearlaments.
    • Torrid depicts Pressured Planet Wraitsoth, home of the Kashtiras.
  • Power Glows: Both Riumheart and Prime-Heart glow in a soft, yellowish light. The concept art for Prime-Heart describes this as a glowing aura.
  • Reincarnation: The Mannadium Tuners (Meek, Fearless, and Torrid) have the power to help one reincarnate, which is represented by Synchro Summon in-game.
  • Shout-Out: The divekick of Prime-heart, as shown in the artwork of Mannadium Reframing, is a reference to the various Rider Kick finishers from the Kamen Rider franchise.

    Heart
A group of seeming identical strangers to Visas Starfrost, they are in truth the Anthropomorphic Personification of Visas' lost heart, each ruling over one of the broken worlds.
  • Death of Personality: The "hearts" can only exist as their own individuals due to developing their own "egos", but should they be absorbed by Visas Starfrost or one another, their egos will be destroyed while they are converted into energy. They each succumb to this over the course of the story.
    • Reichheart feared this occurring which prompted his fighting Visas Starfrost, but managed to retain his ego despite being absorbed, allowing him to manifest as "Light-heart" and fight alongside Visas. During their clash with Riseheart though, Riseheart managed to steal Light-heart from Visas and absorbed him, destroying his ego.
    • Reinoheart was about to be absorbed by Visas, but he was stolen away by the Kashtiras. His body was broken down into pure energy and absorbed by Riseheart.
    • Riumheart willingly destroys his own ego to purge Riseheart's ego from Vicious Astraloud.
  • Literal Split Personality: According to the Valuable Book, the "hearts" are all pieces of Visas Starfrost's own heart, having been split from him by someone else and given form. Each one in turn is the Anthropomorphic Personification of one of the core emotions from Visas' heart:
    • Reichheart is Visas' "fear".
    • Reinoheart is Visas' "sorrow".
    • Riseheart is Visas' "rage".
    • Riumheart is Visas' "joy".
  • Living Macguffin: The "hearts" are being pursued by both Visas and the Kashtira for different reasons, the former due to their being the fragments of his lost heart he wants to reclaim, the latter due to following the direction of Riseheart. Reinoheart in particular acts as this, as he is left comatose following his defeat at Visas' hands, then stolen by the Kashtira and claimed by Riseheart, Visas giving chase and prompting him to go to Wraitsoth.
  • Mythology Gag
    • The four "hearts" and Visas Starfrost all serve as references to the Yu-Boys and Zarc, being a group of identical strangers that slowly begin merging with one another, with Visas being Zarc, Reichheart being Yuto, Reinoheart being Yugo, Riseheart being Yuri, and Riumheart being a composite of Yuya and Ray. Much like the climax of ARC-V, Visas is driven mad, and undergoes a Face–Monster Turn: "Supreme King Z-ARC" for Yuya, and "Vicious Astraloud" for Visas, only being pacified by Riumheart's sacrifice and balancing out the remaining hearts, much like how Yuya broke free from Zarc and let Ray defeat him via Reira, with Yuya now housing both his own soul and the souls of his other counterparts.
    • What the four "Hearts" represent is also a reference to another set of characters from a Konami property - the Cobra Unit from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, all of whom represent a particular emotion and are broken off aspects of Visas's own emotions, and their absorption being an analogue for the journey of the man who would become Big Boss. Visas himself represents Naked Snake, Reichheart is The Fear, Reinoheart is The Sorrow, Riseheart is The Fury, and Riumheart is a Composite Character between The Joy / The Boss and The End, both of whom are the most noble of the unit. Visious Astraloud represents Visas's descent into madness, and could be seen as an allegory for Big Boss becoming the demon he is by the events of the first Metal Gear, as it's only after someone else fulfills the true meaning of The Boss's dream that he is finally freed from his suffering, much like how Riumheart sacrifices himself so that Visas can be free of the suffering that Riseheart's corruption had caused.
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: The various "hearts" that Visas fights against slowly ascend in terms of evil, starting with the darwinistic but good intentioned Reichheart, then the despotic and cruel Reinoheart, culminating in the insane and vile Riseheart. Riumheart is the only exception, as Visas himself takes the role of antagonist for their conflict, now a rampaging and barely sapient Omnicidal Maniac.

Characters

    Visas Starfrost
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/visas_starfrost.png
Based on the lore inferred through card artworks, Visas Starfrost is a fighter who travels between planets to liberate these planets from their tyrannical rulers.

  • Amnesiac Hero: When Visas first awoke, he had no memory of who he was nor any real semblance of identity, just an instinctive feeling to go to Reichphobia and absorb Reichheart. Once he does so, he gains a semblance of who he was, in that his heart had been split into multiple pieces that were given form, and that he'd regain his memory if he could restore his heart.
  • Energy Absorption: Visas possesses the ability to absorb matter and convert it into energy via his Red Right Hand, using both to absorb the pieces of his heart, and convert other material like the Kashtira weaponry into raw power. Gameplay-wise, this is reflected in his second effect, in which he gains half the higher value between the ATK or DEF of any monster he destroys in battle.
  • Face–Monster Turn: "Kashtira Akstra" shows the aftermath of his battle with Ariseheart and absorbing him, resulting in him being driven mad and turned into the monstrous "Vicious Astraloud".
  • Identical Stranger: Downplayed. The "heart" monsters, being the embodiments of his divided heart, physically resemble him to an extent, down to having a Red Right Hand. There are some distinct differences between them such as hair color and skin tone, but they share the same faces and physique.
  • Light Is Good: His card has the LIGHT attribute and Visas is depicted as a heroic warrior who liberates the worlds he travels to from tyrannical rulers.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Following his battle with Mannadium Prime-Heart, Visas finds peace with himself and becomes the LIGHT Warrior Synchro Monster "Visas Amritara".
  • Mistaken Identity: The non-heart Tearlaments are rather hesitant to trust Visas at first due to him being an Identical Stranger to Reinoheart, initially mistaking the two for one in the same.
  • Red Right Hand: His right arm is covered in silver fragmented armor. Beneath that armor, his arm looks more akin to a nebula in the shape of an arm.
  • Sixth Ranger: Visas Starfrost is supported by several cards from the Scareclaw, Tearlaments, Kashitra, and Mannadium archetypes.
  • Victor Gains Loser's Powers: Visas's second effect increases his ATK by half of the highest stat of whichever monster he destroys in battle. Lore wise, this allows him to absorb the powers of the various Hearts he's defeated, successfully absorbing Reichheart and manifesting him as Light-Heart. This ends up backfiring however after defeating Kashtira Ariseheart, as while he manages to absorb both the power of Riseheart and the already absorbed Reinoheart, doing so ends up driving him mad and turning him into "Vicious Astraloud".

The "Hearts"

    Scareclaw Reichheart

  • Anti-Villain: According to the Valuable Book, Reichheart was merely training his subjects so they'd be stronger for when the Kashtira inevitably attack again, and only attacked Visas on instinct, thanks to knowing Visas would absorb him if he didn't fight back and fearing Reichphobia would be conquered by the Kashtira without him there.
  • The Beastmaster: Reichheart is the master of the Level 3s, having sworn their loyalty to him out of a sense of Might Makes Right, which then transfers to Visas Starfrost once he absorbs Reichheart's heart. Mechanically, the goal of the archetype is to summon Tri-Heart, an evolved form of Reichheart, and support it with the Level 3s.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: While he may look like a vicious tyrant, Reichheart is not really evil, rather he has a Social Darwinist mindset and was defending himself from the amnesiac Visas.
  • Defeat Equals Friendship: After being defeated by Visas Starfrost, Reichheart accompanies him on his travels as Light-Heart, a miniature version of itself.
  • Equippable Ally: Various artworks depict Light-Heart as having the ability to transform into a sword similar in design as the one he wielded as Reichheart, which Visas Starfrost in turn wields in battle. The art for Scareclaw Defang makes this more explicit, showing Light-Hearts visage reaching out for Visas Starfrost when Kashtira Arise-Heart steals the blade away. The Valuable Book would later clarify it's less Light-Heart turns into the sword, and more that the sword is another manifestation made from Reichheart's heart that Visas absorbed.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of the three "hearts" embodying negative emotions, Reichheart is the only one to not be flat out malevolent. Whereas Reinoheart was a despotic tyrant and Riseheart an insane conqueror, Reichheart was at worst a darwinistic ruler, the Scareclaws willingly following him out of a sense of Might Makes Right, and Reichheart only attacking Visas out of fear that Reichphobia wouldn't survive an invasion from the Kashtira if Visas managed to absorb him, a fear that proved justified when, after Visas absorbed him and they left for Perlereino, the Kashtira invaded and conquered Reichphobia.

    Tearlaments Reinoheart

  • Ax-Crazy: Reinoheart is the embodiment of Visas' "Sorrow", torturing and brainwashing other Tearlaments to satiate his ego.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: As Kaleido-heart, Reinoheart proceeds to brainwash the other Tearlaments with the sorrow he feels at their "betrayal" of him, and use them as hostages against Visas. Visas manages to free Kitkallos though using Reichheart's power over fear long enough for her to stab Kaleido-heart In the Back.
  • Whip of Dominance: In line with his use of Brainwashed and Crazy on the Tearlaments archetype, Reinoheart and his Fusion evolution, Kaleido-Heart, both wield a triple-pronged whip to assert his dominance on his followers.

    Kashtira Riseheart

  • Ax-Crazy: Riseheart is the embodiment of Visas' "Rage", driven insane from his own anger to the point he thinks he is the actual Visas, and began conquering other worlds to claim their "hearts".
  • The Corrupter: When Visas defeats him, Riseheart proves to be Defiant to the End, resisting the absorption with all the rage he can muster. This, combined with Visas' own unstable emotions and the sorrow and fear that Riseheart has also absorbed, ends up driving Visas mad, turning him into Vicious Astraloud. This only ends when his ego is purged by Riumheart's Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Evil Doppelgänger: Kashtira Riseheart looks like a mirror version of Visas Starfrost but with opposing traits, down to having a similar Red Right Hand, albeit being their left hand, wearing samurai-esque clothing to contrast Visas Starfrost's samurai-esque armor, and having long hair with red highlights to contrast Visas' short hair with blue highlights.
  • Sanity Slippage: According to the "Valuable Book", Riseheart ended up going insane from his own rage, which prompted his turn to conquering other worlds, and convinced him he was the real Visas Starfrost.

    Mannadium Riumheart

  • Good Counterpart: To contrast with the prior three hearts, Riumheart is purely benevolent, and looks nigh-identical to Visas-Starfrost, just with an ethereal golden glow. According to the Valuable Book, this is because Calarium is Visas' Mental World, and Riumheart represents the innate joy Visas still had in his heart, and was his way of Fighting from the Inside of Vicious Astraloud.
  • Hero Antagonist: Riumheart is the fourth heart monster fought lore wise, but unlike his predecessors, he is entirely heroic and benevolent. Unfortunately, he is only fought at all due to Visas undergoing a Face–Monster Turn and becoming "Vicious Astraloud", with Riumheart having to take a stand against him in the artwork of "Mannadium Breakheart".
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Riumheart sacrifices his ego so as to force the joy in his heart back into Visas and counteract the rage he gained from Riseheart, calming him down from being Vicious Astraloud.
