The Witches and The Watchers

    In General
  • Numerical Theme Naming: Utilizing the Goroawase Number, the main characters consist of Morihito (1), Nico (2), Miharu (3), Kanshi (4), Keigo (5), and Nemu (6). Bonus for another Meaningful Name, each in every watcher's entry.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Mostly due to Nico they don't kill their enemies.
  • Three Plus Two: Originally consisted of Nico, Morihito, and Kanshi. Later Keigo and Nemu join. With Miharu officially joining the household as a watcher, Nemu becomes the Sixth Ranger instead.

    Nico

Nico Wakatsuki

Voiced by: Yuuki Kyouka (vomic)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nico_wakatsuki_4.jpg

A young, fledgling witch. After finishing her witch training, she got sent by her mother to live in Otogi Residence, much to her excitement at the prospect of having a budding romance with her childhood friend, Moi. However, she is sent for protection as a danger looming over her, due to her status as the Thousand Witch, in the near future.

  • Badass Pacifist: While her magical strength is not as dominantly displayed as her familiar's supernatural powers, Nico is somewhat capable of her own in doing magic. However, as strong as she is, she is also insistent on not taking Warlock's life upon defeat, even though the Warlocks are after her life.
  • Bodyguard Crush: to Morihito, her familiar and childhood friend.
  • Childhood Friend: with Morihito and Kanshi.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Nico wants and is eager to invoke this relationship with Morihito, albeit the latter thinks of nothing but a best friend of her.
  • Damsel in Distress: Sometimes, her role is reduced to this to make way for showing off her watchers ability and teamwork.
  • Hot Witch: Invoked and played for laughs. There are some instances of Nico trying to make herself more attractive, by using her magic (deliberately or accidentally) and Kanshi's help, but that mostly doesn't end well in her favor.
  • Iconic Outfit: Nico often dons a vintage smock dress with a waistbelt and magic wand attached. Said smock dresses were a gift from her French grandmother witch.
  • Nice Girl: A good girl all along, Nico has her best interest in helping people around, with or without magic.
  • Lethal Chef: All she makes is often has a slimy appearance and tastes disgusting, per Morihito's review.
  • Our Witches Are Different: Nico uses her wand for flying instead of swinging them for conjuring spells. Her familiar is also not a mere pet like a little cat, but four males with animal ancestries who comes from the familiar lineage in their blood, effectively serving as bodyguards (dubbed as watchers).
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Nico's hair is as bright as her personality.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She is the only girl living in the Otogi residence.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The English version used the more typical romanized spelling "Niko" until a couple chapters in when "Nico" appeared on her door in-series, after which existing chapters were edited to always have that spelling.
  • Sweet Tooth: Nico likes one and often eats sweets to restore her magic after using them in a large amount.

    Morihito

Morihito Otogi

Voiced by: Kaede Suetsugu (vomic)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/morihito_otogi_5.jpg

Nico's childhood friend and an ogre from a familiar lineage. Asked by his father and her mother to protect Nico from the future prophesied downfall as a bodyguard.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Moi, courtesy of Nico.
  • Animal Motif: Ox and Tiger, due to his ogre lineage. However, this is not as prevalent as the others.
  • The Comically Serious: Morihito is very serious in everything, be it his ogre training, hobbies, or anything trivial, sometimes it becomes funny.
  • Friendless Background: Morihito thought of himself to be better off without friends due to his ogre lineage, making Nico his Only Friend bonded by the same supernatural ancestry they had in their childhood.
  • Meaningful Name: His name comes from 守り人 (moribito), a protector or guardiannote .
  • Motor Mouth: Becomes one when it comes to talking about his hobbies, like raising denim.
  • Oblivious to Love: He never regards Nico's advance as anything more, and while he thinks of her dearly, it is nothing more than being a best friend in his mind, much to her chagrin.
  • Promotion to Parent: Since there is no adult who acts as supervisor in the house, Morihito takes the role and is responsible for both the domestic chores and keeping others intact.
  • The Stoic: Often seen stonefaced and has difficulties in expressing his own emotions since childhood and invoked further, courtesy of ogre training he did for years.
    • Not So Stoic: That being said, the guy has his own moment, always laughs heartily whenever there is a good comedy and is passionate when talking about his unique hobbies.
  • Tranquil Fury: Morihito is rarely an angry person, but he still can maintain his calm demeanor when smashing bricks or walls in fury.
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: While he is naturally mild-mannered and hard to get mad, he can prove that he is scary by using his strength.

    Kanshi

Kanshi Kazamatsuri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kanshi_kazamatsuri_8.jpg

A boy from the Tengu clan. Like Morihito, he also got asked to be one of Nico's guardians by their parents.

  • Animal Motif: Crows, befitting his image as someone from Tengu lineage.
  • Blow You Away: As a tengu familiar, he can manipulate wind as well as use it for fighting.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Kanshi's strength is as loud as he sounds whenever in a fight.
  • Butt-Monkey: Big time.
  • Guyliner: He wears a red one under his eyes.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is homophonous with 監視 (kanshi), meaning guarding or observation.
  • Money Dumb: Kanshi is poor with his money management and is often seen spending a lot of money on trivial things like snacks or Gacha Games (both in microtransaction type or actually playing gachapon in reality). Thus, he needs to do some part-time jobs mainly to maintain his cash and pay the rent in the Otogi household.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: He is frequently changing his part-time job and there are even recurring chapters for his shenanigans on the said part-time jobs, named Kanshi's Part-Time Job Diaries.
  • Nice Guy: Incredibly good-natured and nice. Tellingly, despite having feelings for Nico himself, when he learns about her feelings for Moi he instantly jumps into trying to help her get with him.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Nico and Moi.

    Keigo

Keigo Magami/Wolf

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/keigo_magami_6.jpg
Click here for his alter ego upon transforming.

A snooty hipster from Morihito and Nico's class who eventually befriends them. Keigo was a warlock underling who can transform into another persona named Wolf, due to his werewolf ancestry. He agreed to join as one of Nico's watchers later on, after feeling indebted to Nico for saving him, from the warlock, and his mother to a full recovery.

  • Animal Motif: Wolf, noted by his image as a lone wolf and his power to transform into a type of werewolf.
  • Beta Couple: He and Nemu essentially play this role in relation to Nico and Moi's persistent Will They or Won't They?
  • Consistent Clothing Style: Keigo always wearing baggy clothes with simple pants so that whenever he transforms into Wolf, accidentally or not, Wolf will still fit into his clothes thus avoiding damage to his clothes upon the de-transformation.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He first appeared as far as the fifth chapter and had an episode with the gang before actually being added as the main character later on.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Always brings one and rests it on his shoulder to invoke his lone-wolf image and hipster persona at first. He rarely does so now by the time he moves into the Otogi residence.
  • Hidden Depths: Was a pro-skater in his childhood, before retiring due to Wolf's awakening and the accident. He also can create games, although often boring and too niche for people's taste.
  • Lunacy: Being a werewolf does not make him become wolflike, but instead he has a more violent alternate personality that comes out whenever he sees a crescent moon. It does not have to be the actual thing, either. Basically, any picture or legible drawing of a crescent symbol will have the same effect.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is homophonous with 警護 (keigo), meaning bodyguard.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: He develops a split-personality, of Jekyll & Hyde variation, upon transforming instead of being a werewolf.
  • Ship Tease: With Nemu.
  • Werewolves Are Dogs: His role in the team is basically the watchdog when necessary.

    Miharu

Miharu Kiryu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miharu_kiryu_7.jpg

A middle-high school kid who is prophesied as the last watcher by Nico's mother. He comes from a bat ancestry, effectively making him a vampire.

  • All Take and No Give: Averted. The basis of his relationship with Rui (the student council president) comes from their need to release their urges, with Miharu needs to regularly sip some vitality and Rui needs to suppress his urge to destroy.
  • Animal Motif: Bat, as he is a vampire from the bat lineage of familiars.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Mistaken as a girl by the others on their first meeting due to his pretty face.
  • Immortality: Of the Life Drinker variation. He still ages and can be hurt or even impaled near death, but as long as he absorbs someone's vitality, he is practically immortal.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Prone of bluntly saying whatever he has in mind, despite having a polite speech pattern.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is homophonous with 見張る (miharu), meaning to stand watch or to look out.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Instead of sucking the blood out of a human, Miharu sucks the vitality of someone to satiate himself by pinching his target.
  • Parasol of Pain: Always brings a dark umbrella to give him shade from direct sunlight and give the enemy a beat by the sword contained on it.
  • Puberty Superpower: Becomes more aware of his vampiric power and develops a hunger to suck vitality during his current age.
  • Weakened by the Light: He cannot be standing still on direct light for a long time and prefers to do his activity more later in the day.

    Nemu

Nemu Miyao

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nemu_miyao_5.jpg

A shapeshifting witch from the neighboring city. Initially appears as some rival witch who wanted Morihito as a familiar, Nemu becomes a friend later on in their adventures.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Subverted. She looks like one in appearance but is shyer than she lets on.
  • Animal Motif: Cat, as she can transform into one.
  • Beta Couple: She and Keigo essentially play this role in relation to Nico and Moi's persistent Will They or Won't They?
  • Covert Pervert: Even in an unconscious state, she can remember how packed Wolf was when she was in his cradle.
  • Punny Name: Her surname, Miyao, is just like a cat's meow.
  • Hates Being Touched: Downplayed. Nemu doesn't like being touched by surprise, and actually perfectly fine with being touched if she gets noticed first.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: She has this thought at times as she knows she probably will not live up to her mother's expectations and deems herself not as a good witch as Nico.
  • Imagine Spot: Nemu does have one, often accompanied by the inner monologue poem.
  • Ship Tease: with Keigo
  • Shrinking Violet: She is shy and would rather turn herself into a cat whenever she tries to visit Otogi residential at first.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: She can turn into a cat at her will, and it is a magic that she specializes in well.

One of the students in Nico and Morihito's class.

  • Jerkass Has a Point: While he is having a field trip on trolling the Kan-Nico channel comment section, he does have a point in saying that their video is not that good to be uploaded, to begin with.
  • Punny Name: His name comes from komento-ran arashi phrase, meaning someone who is prone to start a flame in the comment section (of thread or forum).
  • Troll: His defining trait.

Teaching Staff

    Ms. Makuwa

Yuri Makuwa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuri_makuwa.jpg

  • Yaoi Fangirl: Stated to be one for Utsuro/Oboro pairing from Uron Mirage.

Asunaro High School Student Council

    In General
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Courtesy of the Student Council President and his hobby of invoking tropes in mind, he likes to have and gather his council members a defining trope as their trait.
Morihito: [...] come to think of it, I heard that the newly elected student council is Trope-tacular. Yeah. Basically the people on it are all character stereotypes from manga [...]
  • Custom Uniform: Everyone in the council is clearly not wearing a standard school-issued uniform to amp up their Troperrific characterization.

    Student Council President

Tenryu Kiyomiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tenryu_kiyomiya.jpg

The President of Asunaro High School Student Council. Always seen with his hand on his hat. Brother to Suzuka Kiyomiya.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his antics, he actually has some level of decency and common sense. He takes his job as student council president seriously and can have critical thinking when he needs to.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Despite having extreme logic and unusual tastes for tropey and cliched things, he does have a point in making decisions. Case example, he gives sensible reason to have Morihito and friends monitored, due to their magical and supernatural antics affecting the school.
  • Signature Headgear: Always wearing a military hat as a part of his uniform.
  • Stalker without a Crush: He is very eager to have Morihito as one of his council members and invites him to do so at every moment possible, much to Morihito's distress.

Ibu Ibara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ibu_ibara.jpg

The Vice President of Asunaro High School Student Council.

  • Custom Uniform of Sexy: She bares her midriff and wears the sexiest customization possible of a school uniform, complete with fishnet stockings and high heels.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Parodied. Her entire function as a character is to stand around looking like this and have other characters comment on how silly it looks.
  • Something about a Rose: She often has one in her possession, which can work as a stabbing weapon, as demonstrated in her debut.
  • Verbal Tic: Often ends her sentences with "kittens" or the variations thereof.
  • Younger Than They Look: She looks like she could easily be in her 20s, despite being a high-school student.

The Treasurer of Asunaro High School Student Council.

  • Child Prodigy: Definitely appears like one, along with his hacking ability.
  • Hollywood Hacking: For some reason, he even can hack into the shonen magazine editorial department's computer system effortlessly.
  • Playful Hacker: All his hacking seemingly doesn't have any malicious intention.
  • Younger Than They Look: Looks like a grade-schooler instead of a high school student. His introductory tagline even says "Genius Shota Hacker" to emphasize it.

Others

    Jun and Ann

Jun Hourai and Ann Nikura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jun_and_ann.jpg

(at right) This is Ann. She goes to Nemu’s school.

They are a couple.

  • Birds of a Feather: With each other, down to everything.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Inverted. They quickly become a couple after some conversations, although there is no talk about marriage.
  • It Runs in the Family: They speak like that because their parents are middle school English teachers.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Their design very much comes out of New Horizon and New Crown.note
  • Punny Name: Respectively, Hourai Jun and Niikura Ann mean Horizon and New Crown.
  • Translation Convention: In Japanese, they speak as though their dialogue had been translated from an English textbook, complete with rigid grammar and un-dropped subjects and objects. The English version translates this to the kind of English that’s actually found in said textbooks, with simple sentences, basic vocabulary, and few if any contractions.
  • You No Take Candle: Averted. They speak in perfect English grammar but in a stiff, basic manner, just like the characters in the English textbooks they’re based on.

Ibuki Wakatsuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ibuki_wakatsuki.jpg

  • Seers: She specializes in divination magic.

    Keigo's mother

Keigo's mother. She is in a wheelchair due to the accident.

  • No Name Given: She is referred to only by her last name and her status as Keigo's mom.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Has no issue knowing her son is a werewolf and having friends with the same supernatural properties.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: A particular accident made her bound to a wheelchair. Thanks to Nico and her panacea, she is recovered by now.

    Miharu's parents

Masumi Kiryu and his wife

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miharu_parents.jpg

Miharu's parents. They are an ancient family who run an exorcist service as an occupation for generations.

  • Good Parents: They love Miharu, their only son, and try their best to give him a proper and normal childhood.
  • Older Than They Look: Masumi looks like someone in his sixty or seventy despite actually
being in his forties. Justified due to Miharu sucking his vitality from time to time for about five years.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Needless to say, Miharu's mother is more pleasing in the eyes than his father.

Warlocks

    In General

Warlock in general

  • Artifact Title: Warlock usually refers to male sorcerers, note  but the title itself becomes a label for those with sorcerer powers who fall into the darkness, regardless of their gender.
  • Slowly Slipping Into Evil: One way to turn into a warlock with darker powers is by succumbing to negative feelings and committing an evil act, obviously.

    Enchanter Warlock

Ayako Makinose

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enchanter_warlock.jpg

A warlock that came as a threat in the prophecy, and serves as the first antagonist in the series.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The one and only death depicted in the series so far, and it's quite the doozy. She's killed right at the moment she is about to reveal the mastermind in front of Nico and her friends.
  • Deal with the Devil: She made a pact with a mysterious figure to extend her lifespan and bring out more of her magic, with her shrunk size and a spell to trigger her death (should she try to leak information) as the price.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: While her existence in the series brings a more serious atmosphere than the usual story, she is far from being the Big Bad, as other warlocks come later in the series.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: She just wants to be someone and escape from the strict life she had before her magical power awakened.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She promised Keigo a panacea if only he agreed to be her minion. Being a warlock whose powers awakened later in life, of course she doesn't have one, as a panacea is a custom that is followed by a witch at her birth, effectively lying and manipulating him.
  • No Immortal Inertia: After trap magic is activated by the time she wants to give more detail to Nico, she rapidly ages and turned into dust in an instant.

    Water Warlock

Ryohei Fuchi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/water_warlock.jpg
