The apparent deuteragonist of the story and a student of Neo-Daten University. Steph is a rather strange lady with even stranger habits. Apparently, Steph also has several workers inside of her soul-room...
- Ambiguous Disorder: Has multiple of them, apparently. This is mostly played for laughs, until the next few episodes.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Steph has a rather strange personality and holds even stranger eating habits that were Played for Laughs at first... This becomes Harsher in Hindsight once it is revealed that she has multiple mental disorders and apparently has an illness that is slowly killing her...
- Basement-Dweller: Steph Tsunade doesn't actually live in her parents basement, but she's 20 years old and still lives with her mum, who is implied to be still taking care of Steph... Mainly because of her multiple illnesses.
- Big Eater: Steph is this, as she once devoured a hamburger in one gulp...
- Brain Uploading: She's a human that's capable of achieving this with the USB port inside of her neck... Once she jacks herself into an electronic system with a cable, her workers are able to see through her eyes.

- Small, Secluded World: Steph's body acts as an entire universe for the cells inhabiting it, in episode 5...
- Stomach of Holding: Using anime physics to her own advantage also allowed for Steph to store mangas, anime dvds, miscellaneous items and junk food within her for safe-keeping. It also comes with its own disadvantages, such as frequent indigestion.
- Vision Quest: Steph goes on a vision-quest in episode 6
- "Oh no, don't you dare try to attract me with your- fairy... glamour...."
The apparent protagonist of the story and a self-proclaimed detective of the occult. He's been reincarnated as a student in Neo-Daten University multiple times, and his current self was recently inducted into the Student Council.
- Audience? What Audience?: Yumeko appears to be unable to hear the narrator... to an extent.
- Absurdly Powerful Student Council: Is the fourth member.

- "Please... G-give this to my half-sister... Tell her... Tell her to go fuck herself."
A one-shot character who makes his appearance in the first episode by getting hit by a truck.
- Affectionate Parody: Of an Isekai protagonist.
- The opening details his offscreen adventures in another world, which include questing, monster-slaying, building a harem, and ultimately being run over with a chariot.
- "Sure, you may think you're untouchable, but that just means you've never tried!"
The dragon-like gym teacher of an as-of-yet unnamed highschool. While not actually a student at the university, he seems to have a few unsolved mysteries of his own.
- Agonizing Stomach Wound: He receives one courtesy of Lucia. Suffice it to say, it's not pleasant in the least, and it puts him in the hospital after the fight with the Nightmare is over.
- Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Introduced as such, and he's a master of both kendo and aikido.
- Black Blood: Taken literally. He bleeds black upon being injured by Lucia, something Yumeko tries to avoid lampshading.
- Breath Weapon: He can breathe fire, which can be used as a strong weapon. Sometimes, during emotional moments, he accidentially triggers it.

- I Sense a Disturbance in the Force: That specific disturbance being when another cat person is around, apparently. As according to him, There Can Be Only One.
- Overly Long Name: Absolutely Played for Laughs. Kosugi's full name very roughly translates to "Small Japanese Cedar Releasing Shit in The Village in The Middle of Ferryside", with or in a Honda Civic.
The "Exorcist Prince", or so he claims. One of the students at Neo-Daten, Izuru has a split personality that manifests into a demonic Nightmare-like creature when he's unconscious.
- The B Grade: Has a secret fear of academic failure.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Disappears after episode 4.
- Chuunibyou: A very stereotypical example, since he's meant to embody the archetype itself.
- Somewhat justified, because he actually does have latent dark powers, just that he doesn't know about them.
- Demonic Possession: Got possessed after getting a concussion by Hiroji.
- Horns of Villainy: Gained them after getting possessed by some sort of demon, although he himself is not evil.
- Superpowered Evil Side: His demonic-side acts as this.
- Tap on the Head: The first significant thing he does onscreen is getting a concussion after being neck-chopped from behind by Hiroji. This later becomes a source of Foreshadowing when his body is possessed shortly afterwards.
The youngest character, being an elementary school student. Terebi tends to talk with the Narrator and directly break the fourth wall, unlike the rest of the cast.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: While his original appearances were sparse, he has completely vanished by episode 4.
- My Significance Sense Is Tingling: He has "plot relevance" senses, causing him to randomly appear before or after important events—but ironically, rarely during them.

- Art Initiates Life: With the aid of her magical pen. She considers summoning deities with the ability at one point.
- Otaku: A Rare Female Example—makes sense, considering her profession. She's shown holding a volume of Tokyo Mew Mew in her first appearance.
- Power Incontinence: She randomly teleports around seemingly no reason. Yumeko thinks that she might have "Attention Teleportation Syndrome", although she has yet to be diagnosed by an actual doctor, as Yuu noted.
- Sequential Artist: Dreams that she would be an actual manga artist and has ideas of her own.
- Token Religious Teammate: Apparently is Christian and is open about her beliefs. Her father runs a church, which she brings up when offering to exorcise Izuru's Demonic Possession.
A black cat who, bizarrely, introduces himself as a student at the university. He's often seen around Kosugi and Izuru, being fond of the former's affectionate hugs.
- Expy: His personality and species are inspired by both Speedy Cerviche and Team Rocket's Meowth.
- Ironic Name: His name comes from "kazu", meaning harmony or peace. Kazuo is quick-tempered and boisterous.
- Token Non-Human: He also talks despite looking exactly like a normal stray cat, shocking Yumeko upon their first meeting.

A quiet and seldom-seen student. She debuts alongside Haruna.

- Token Minority: He's the only American and non-Japanese character so far in the story.
Stephanie's older brother, who sometimes makes appearances in spirit form.
- Gentle Giant: He is very tall and towers over the main cast.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: While Steph is into action movies and fighting, Chris is more peaceful and more interested in making flower arrangements.
- Adaptational Superpower Change: Since she is a Tengu in this adaptation, Goethe has Tengu-related powers.
- Blow You Away: Her large vulture wings allow small tornadoes and hurricanes to occur
- Body Surf: Due to the loss of her original form, Goethe tends to possess several avian animals to spy on others in the area, including the local crows, doves, seagulls and even hawks...
- Casting Gag: Like many of the characters seen in Steph's Soul Room, she's a carry-over from one of the creator's stories.
- Cool Mask: When on duty, Goethe has a red mask that's rather reminescent of a crow's beak. It also makes for a great disguise.
- Creepy Crows: A whole flock of them tend to appear whenever she is around...
- Idiot Crows: She tends to call the others "baka" whenever possible.
- The Vamp: She is known for her rather dark and gothic appearance.
- You No Take Candle: She talks like this while possessing other crows.
- "OI! ONLY MY CLUB AND I ARE PERMITTED TO BLOW SHIT UP IN THIS SCHOOL!"
A Demolitions Club member and hall monitor, Kanazawa guards the school gate and takes care of those who are tardy. Violently.

- Demolitions Expert: As per being in the Demolitions Club.
- Expy: Is a parody of Kanazawa from Blazing Transfer Student.

- Yellow Sash of Power: Takes his job as a hall monitor very seriously.
Hiroji's sister, a medical student. She enlists the help of Yumeko with the goal of freeing him from their lineage's curse.
- Gosh Darn It to Heck!: Certainly seems to prefer using lesser swear words in contrast to Hiroji's foul mouth.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: She is pacifistic and sensitive, while her brother, Hiroji, is short-tempered and violent.
A mysterious being who seems to be omnipresent. Not much is known about him.
- Interactive Narrator: The characters are allowed to talk to the narrator, however he appears to be an almost entirely different being, separate from the story. One paragraph implies that he's reading the "script" in a room, and he apparently works with the... manga editor?
The guidance counsellor of Neo-Daten and maths enthusiast, who believes that algebra can one day save the world.
- Mr. Exposition: He formally explains the story's plot to Yumeko during their meeting.

- Mind Virus: All Nightmares contain a contagious Mind Virus that spreads via contact with the Nightmare, which is why often a Dark Magical Girl need to keep a safe distance away from them while using magical powers.
- Personality Powers: Each Nightmare had a former personality which influences its own Nightmare form, and also greatly exaggerates their character-flaws (from when they were still human).
- Power Incontinence: Since their main powers were based on their negative emotions as a human, Nightmares also experience an uncontrollable burst of power at very random times. This is also why they're so dangerous to humans.
- Resurrective Immortality: Once a Nightmare has spawned, they are effectively immortal unless dealt with, via either a Dark Magical Girl, Magic Knight or a Magical Girl...
- Soulless Shell: Since they have little need of a soul-room, all the Nightmares were essentially soulless.
- Was Once a Man: Every Nightmare had spawned from a former human.
The first Nightmare to appear. Also known as Cicada Jones, she was once a student of Neo-Daten University with low self-esteen, before she started falling into a transformation...
- Insect Queen: Her Nightmare form is related to insects.
- Humans Are Insects: This is also how Lucia sees humans in comparison to herself.
The second Nightmare to appear. Also, known as Sarah Burgess, she was last seen at a carnival stall near Solar Park, shortly before transforming into a large bear-ogre with sharp claws.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Gets distracted easily by the main cast's Transformation Sequence and appears to be easily distracted in general, considering that she's still Just a Kid.
- Bears Are Bad News: Part of her Nightmare design include bear paws and the ears to go with it.
- Doting Parent: Sarah's mother was shocked when her daughter suddenly turned into a Nightmare
- Living Toys: Treats humans as a literal version of this trope.

- Our Wyverns Are Different: Hunger is actually a tape-wyvern, which is an intestinal parasite of humans.
- Poison Is Corrosive: It's able to spit acidic slime at Yuu, which damages everything in contact with it.
- Snake Talk: Hunger talks like this when it has revealled its true form.
