The Dead Canary

    open/close all folders

     Quinn Cassidy

Quinn Cassidy

Portrayed by: Corey Dorris
''"This is what I get for trying to sober up the town drunk!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/quinn_9.png

The chef at the Dead Canary, classically trained and deeply frustrated that the people of Connor Creek seem to have so little interest in his culinary masterpieces. Dreams of one day bringing the town its first Michelin star.

  • Angry Chef: Only when people don't appreciate his cooking.
  • Angst: Gets a little of the existential variety after the werewolf mania sets in.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After ages slogging away at the barely-occupied Dead Canary dealing mostly with the drunk Dr. Edwards, the Epilogue reveals that Desmond handed ownership of The Dead Canary to Quinn after the events of the series. Quinn renovated it into a nice restaurant that has earned him the Michelin star he always wanted.
  • Eccentric Artist: Likes to add a flourish to any meal.
  • French Cuisine Is Haughty: Gets particularly frustrated that Dr. Henry didn't even taste his bouillabaisse.
  • Supreme Chef: For a man working in a bar kitchen in a tiny remote town, he has a lot of ingredients at his disposal. He is responsible for turning The Dead Canary around from Greasy Spoon it used to be, and is aiming to get Connor Creek its first Michelin star.

     Desmond Brewer

Desmond Brewer Connor

Portrayed by: Dylan Saunders
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/desmond_72.png

The owner and bartender of the Dead Canary. A man who listens far more than he speaks, and who generally tries to keep out of local politics. Also a Connor werewolf, and the current head of the clan.

  • Badass Pacifist: He tends to avoid picking fights and Artemis calls him a pacifist. But he more than proves his strength against Truman.
  • The Bartender: A bartender with a fondness for listening to his patrons' troubles and attempting to help them through them.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up just in time to save Artemis from Truman.
  • The Confidant: Admits that most people come to his bar to unload their troubles.
  • Determined Defeatist: When Artemis points out Truman plans to kill him, Desmond replies she won't need to, since she's already poisoned the town against the werewolves. He figures the best they can do is to kill Truman and sulk in hiding forever. Yet, he still fights Truman tooth and nail to stop her from destroying everyone.
  • Flipping the Bird: Gives one to Silas.
  • It's All My Fault: Blames himself for not anticipating Truman's threat.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Desmond comes across as gruff and apathetic sometimes, but he's the secret guardian of the town.
  • Meaningful Name: Desmond's last name Brewer is appropriate for a barkeep serving brews. (See also Punny Name on the web video page.) His real last name, Connor, means "lover of wolves."
  • Neutral No Longer: Once he realizes Truman is the cause of all the trouble, he steps in to save Artemis and helps her, Paul, and Madison take Truman down. The epilogue reveals he is planning to run for town council in the next election, hoping to do some good.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Barkeeping: Often seen cleaning glasses, despite the fact that he has barely any customers.
  • The Power of Apathy: Has been hearing people's good and bad news for so long that he no longer feels that the good or bad parts of life ever really change anything in the grand scheme of things. This is why he claims to stay neutral in most conflicts. See Neutral No Longer above for how that changed.
  • The Stoic: A man of very few words, prefers to listen rather than speak, and doesn't appear to take a side in the Miner Mole conflict.
  • Team Dad: Artemis calls him the town dad and he certainly has moments of literal Papa Wolf in Episode 9.
  • Technologically Blind Elders: Hard to say how old Desmond is, but he has no awareness of podcasts or Twitter (though to be fair, the rest of the town probably hasn't either).
  • Vague Age: While the actor is around the same age as the rest of the cast, his demeanor and Team Dad status implies he is quite a bit older. Plus he's a werewolf, and his story in Episode 10 implies he may have been alive when the town was founded over a century ago.
  • Voice of Reason: Is often the one to diffuse a situation at the bar.

Civic Workers

     Sheriff Madison Reynolds

Sheriff Madison Reynolds

Portrayed by: Joanna Sotamura
"I am so sorry to startle you folks, I was just brushing up my target practice in the woods."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/madison_4.png

The sheriff of Connor Creek, and Ryan Reynolds's sister.

  • And This Is for...: Madison finds the courage to take the shot against Truman by picturing her brother's dead body.
  • A-Team Firing: Tends to fire a lot of bullets, but doesn't necessarily hit the target with any of them. Defied in the Final Battle.
  • Bad Liar: In the podcast, Madison lies unconvincingly about finding water supply maps and huge amounts of LSD in Truman's office in order to explain away the werewolf sightings. However, it manages to convince the townspeople.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Madison is the one to finally kill Truman in cold blood with a single bullet. She then immediately turns the gun on Desmond, demanding answers.
  • Break the Cutie: In her first appearance, Sheriff Madison is sweet, friendly, and talkative, if a little awkward and clumsy. Then she finds her brother murdered in the street.
  • Cowardly Lion: Despite being afraid she'll miss because she's a terrible shot, she ends up making the killing blow against the woman who murdered her brother.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: In her first meeting, she accidentally points her gun at Artemis and Paul before giving a nervous laugh and putting it away.
  • Goshdang It To Heck: Downplayed - while she has visible difficulty with swearing, she's willing to when the situation calls for it. Shares this with her brother.
  • Heroic Lineage: She comes from a long line of Connor Creek sheriffs (except her father, an actor who played a sheriff on TV once).
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Her Establishing Character Moment shows her doing target practice. Based on the bullet holes, every bullet hit the hostage instead of the culprit.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Madison for Connor Creek, when she agrees to lead the Werewolf Hunting Task Force on Truman's bequest in order to restore harmony.
Paul: [...] The town had already sided with Truman. And Madison always sided with the town.
  • Nice Girl: Paul calls her one of the kindest, most compassionate people he's ever met, even comparing her to Mister Rogers.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Has a number of these moments.
Madison: Now don't get into trouble, 'cause I'll see ya. [beat] I mean, I hope I don't get ya [motions to her gun]... Okay, nevermind.
  • Plucky Girl: Despite all the awful things she goes through, she finds a way to rally and be positive.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As the town sheriff, she is kind, approachable, and does her best to do right by the town.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to Truman and one to Silas.
  • Secret-Keeper: By the end of the series, Madison is the only human townsperson who knows the whole truth about Connor Creek, and agrees to hide the truth to restore peace.
  • The Scapegoat: Riley and a decent portion of the town blame her for not being able to stop the murders.
  • The Sheriff: Literally the only law of the town.
  • Was It All a Lie?: After discovering the truth about Connor Creek, Madison isn't so much afraid of the werewolves as hurt by the fact that her hometown was founded on a lie, and that many of her friends and neighbors have been hiding their true nature for her whole life. She manages to forgive them when she learns of their good intentions.

     Odie Doty

Odie Doty

Portrayed by: Brendan Bradley
"I read everyone's mail, so I can confirm there are no secrets here in Connor Creek. No one gets anything by old Odie Doty."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/odie_0.png

The town's fitness-obsessed mailman, who uses his runs as a daily workout. Also a Connor werewolf.

  • Live-Action Cartoon: When he goes double-time, complete with sound effect.
  • Nosy Neighbor: He reads the town's mail, so he knows everything that's going on.
  • Rhyming Names: Not only do his first and last names rhyme, but his name also rhymes with "Oh No" to humorous effect.
  • Unstoppable Mailman: Is determined to deliver all the campaign flyers, despite the death of one of the candidates. He's also implied to be cartoonishly fast, foreshadowing that he's secretly a werewolf. Subverted since he is eventually stopped... by his own murder.
  • Voice for the Voiceless: For Crispin, the town mute, in Episode 4.
     Helen Unger

Helen Unger

Portrayed by: Gavyn Pickens
Helen: I'd keep the howling down if I were you.
Paul: What is this, a noise violation?
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/helen_43.png

The town's only parking enforcement officer, who constantly hands out tickets at the slightest possible violation. Also a Connor werewolf.

Other Residents

     Dr. Henry Edwards

Dr. Henry Edwards

Portrayed by: Carlos Valdes
"Get off it Quinn! It's a soup. And it's cold."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dr_henry.png

The town doctor. And also the town drunk.

  • Alcohol Hic: Often seen hiccuping, even during examinations, implying that he is drunk 24/7.
  • The Alcoholic: Is drunk in every appearance he has throughout the series.
  • Ambiguously Gay: In Chapter 6 of the podcast, Henry says this about the twins:
Henry: But you guys are great. Paul is so fun and freewheeling. And Artemis is... your sister. I’m glad [Paul] didn’t die because I love... beer.
  • Dressed to Heal: Unless you followed the Kickstarter, you would have no idea Henry was a doctor until he appears in his lab coat in Episode 4. Paul was also unaware of this.
Paul: Why is this drunk guy dressed like a doctor?
  • Frontier Doctor: While the series takes place in modern day, Connor Creek is so remote and he is so drunk that he might as well be called this (especially since the town was once a stop on the Oregon Trail).
  • Post-Treatment Lollipop: Offers one to Paul.
  • Seen It All: Seems to take this attitude towards death, especially as murder victims continue to pile up throughout the series.
     Crispin Lynch

Crispin Lynch

Portrayed by: Joey Richter
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crispin.png

The town mute. Carries bodies for the mortician.

  • Elective Mute: Established early on that he can speak, but chooses not to for unknown reasons.
  • Flipping the Bird: Does a double one to Rocky and Jewel Irons.
  • Mythology Gag: Crispin's costume is a reference to the Tanner character from the One Night Ultimate Werewolf game that inspired the series.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Crispin breaks his silence with a Precision F-Strike after witnessing Barney's death.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Is shown vomiting down the front of his shirt (which somehow makes it even worse than if he'd vomited outright).

     Vern Marrow

Vern Marrow

Portrayed by: Clayton Snyder
"When you live in a small town people value care and quality over speed and quantity. Now, we sniff!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vern.png
The Passionate Butcher

The town butcher, who enjoys his job to an almost... suspicious degree. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a Connor werewolf.

  • Red Herring: Zigzagged. With his large, hairy appearance and love of raw meat, Vern seems to be by far the most obvious potential werewolf, which also makes him easiest to dismiss suspect. Seemingly played straight when he is not among the werewolves who reveal the truth to Artemis and Paul, and then even more so when the killer is revealed to be Truman. Subverted in the final episode, when Vern reveals that he was a Connor wolf the entire time.
  • Prefers Raw Meat: Is a big fan of the Italian dish carpaccio. Likely due to the fact that he's a werewolf.
  • Pungeon Master: He gravitates towards meat and butcher-related puns... sometimes without meaning to.

     Olivia Tompkins

Olivia Tompkins

Portrayed by: Tara Perry
"Oh! I'm not a werewolf."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/olivia_40.png
The Ammo Shop Owner

The owner of the ammo shop, who looks... oddly similar to Riley, the owner of the gun shop. Also a Connor werewolf.

  • Honesty Is the Best Policy: Upon watching Paul and Helen flounder with their plan to get Madison on their side, Olivia correctly determines it is much easier to just admit to Madison that she is a werewolf and explain the full extent of what is going on.
  • Look-Alike Lovers: Exaggerated - she and Riley, who are played by the same actress, are revealed to have been in a domestic partnership for years.
  • Prefers Raw Meat: Loves her meat fresh off the bone and enjoys Vern's carpaccio tastings. Later revealed to be a typical werewolf trait.
  • Pretty in Mink: Wears a fur-lined coat around town.
  • Stiff Upper Lip: Olivia attempts to do this by going about her normal routine in the midst of the werewolf hysteria.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In the podcast, while thinking about hers and Riley's friendship: "But if one of us is a wolf, would that change things between us?? [...] I’d feel...pretty betrayed if I was best friends with a wolf and didn’t know it. That is, if a werewolf could even UNDERSTAND the concept of best friends!"
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly-girl to her BFFL Riley's tomboy, though they are never seen together.

     Prism

"Prism"/ Bethany Hurst

Portrayed by: Amrita Dhaliwal
"Miner Mole is a company just, not about connecting with the earth, more about exploiting it. They're like, dark clouds, bad energy. You guys come in, I see light, crystals, purity."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prism_7.png

The town mystic. Seems to be largely a charlatan, but she has her moments.

  • Cold Reading: Employs this with Artemis and Paul in their first meeting. Paul is convinced. Artemis, not so much.
  • Fortune Teller: Mainly uses tarot cards to help clients figure out their problems, though she also seems to employ energy cleanses, turmeric shots, and intention candles.
  • Granola Girl: She's against the expansion of Miner Mole, as she feels it exploits the earth.
  • Not-So-Phony Psychic: While she clearly embellishes, upsells, and overcharges for her services, the reading she does in Episode 3 turns out supernaturally accurate, much to her shock and horror. She also once accurately predicted the amount of snowfall in Connor Creek, which was memorable enough to make it into the newspaper.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Her legal name, as revealed in her In Memoriam, was Bethany Hurst, but the characters only ever refer to her as "Prism."
  • Shameless Self-Promoter: See Not So Phony Psychic entry above.
  • Tarot Troubles: Does a reading for Paul in which her whole deck is revealed to be Death cards. She is pronounced dead in the next episode.

     Donny Meadows

Donald "Donny" Meadows

Portrayed by: Jon Cozart
''"Anything to get some fresh blood into this, like, one horse town or whatever... 'Cause I've, like, extinguished the dating pool at this point with, like, men, and women, and all the stuff, it's like a postmodern approach to love."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/donny_4.png

A teenager obsessed with finding love, who becomes the founder and CEO of the clothing line Wolfwear.

  • Eccentric Fashion Designer: Donny's decision to profit off the werewolf hysteria believed to be behind multiple murders in town by creating clothing that appeals to furries qualifies as this.
  • Extreme Omnisexual: Donny has exhausted the entire dating pool in Connor Creek - men, women, or otherwise. He reports all he wants is "a nice pair of lips."
  • Desperately Craves Affection: It becomes increasingly obvious he'll do anything and everything for the chance of finding love.
Donny: Also hey, if you're looking for love, I'm 17 years old. I'm blond. I'm five foot nine. And I'm really not desperate, but I could really use some love right now. Okay, please, please, come find me, SOS, save me from the town. (runs off howling)
Artemis: (beat) I'm starting to feel bad for him.
  • Free-Range Children: Even though Donny is underaged, we never see or hear mention of his parents.
  • Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places: Played for laughs, but in a much more innocent sense. Donny says he has exhausted the entire town dating pool in his first appearance. He has dating on the brain so badly that he thought the town council elections were for speed dating and that LinkedIn was a dating app.
  • Small Town Boredom: He favors the Miner Mole expansion because he needs a wider dating pool.

     Ellis & Mary Jo Walker

Ellis & Mary Jo Walker

Portrayed by: Gabe Greenspan (Ellis) & Ashley Clements (Mary Jo)
"Well, you didn't hear it from us, but [insert obvious, well known fact here]."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ellis.png https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mary_jo.png

The town florists. They are also the town's most prominent and ruthless gossips... except that they're terrible at it. .

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Are perfectly happy to point fingers at their fellow townsfolk.
  • Bright Is Not Good: Their bright floral clothes conceal petty personalities.
  • Captain Obvious: With Artemis and Paul, who were generally witness to whatever event they want to gossip about.
  • Casting Gag: Gabe and Ashley also played a (former) couple in The Solve-It Squad Returns!.
  • The Dandy: Ellis.
  • Flower Motifs: They don't just work with flowers - they are constantly decked out in floral patterns.
  • Gossipy Hens: A rare male-female example. They're also not very good at it.
  • Happily Married: While they're perfectly willing to turn on other townspeople, they refuse to turn on each other.
  • It's All About Me: Ellis's podcast.
Ellis: Well, lemme tell you about the Ellis Files. It starts with me and a tape recorder and it ends with me and a tape recorder...
  • Non-Standard Kiss: They like to rub noses with each other, and treat getting caught doing it as a Caught with Your Pants Down moment.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Ellis, suspecting Rita of growing hemlock, puts the supposed poisonous plant in his mouth. Luckily, he discovers it was actually fennel.

     Barney Fletcher

Barney Fletcher

Portrayed by: Daniel Strauss
"And then one final last stop at Fletcher's Hall of Curiosities and Wonders to see the only dinosaur egg left on earth."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/barney_3.png

Owns the local tourist trap, Fletcher’s Hall of Curiosities and Wonders, and is the town radio station’s disk jockey.

  • The Barnum: Claims to have a real dinosaur egg in his Hall of Curiosities, which is just a regular egg. Subverted in that no one is fooled and that he dies proclaiming he believes the egg is real.
  • Black Sheep: Is the only delegate of the EggCeptional Independent Party of Connor Creek, and seems dedicated to being the contrarian.
OLIVIA: The Conservatitve Conservation Party of Connor Creek casts its 14 delegates to Blue Ink.
VERN: The Liberal Use of Federal Filibuster Party of Connor Creek casts its 16 delegates to Blue Ink.
BARNEY: The Eggceptional Independent Party of Connor Creek casts its 1 delegate to Black Ink.
    VERN: Barney. C’mon.
    BARNEY: I’m WITHIN MY RIGHTS.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Dies proclaiming his egg really was a dinosaur egg.
  • Lame Last Words: Lampshaded. After running into the town council covered in blood and rambling on about saving his "dinosaur egg," he says,"Retrospectively, I probably should've spent my last minutes telling you who did this," before falling down dead.
  • Shameless Self-Promoter: Promotes his museum and dinosaur egg every time he appears.

     Wallis Gale

Wallis Gale

Portrayed by: Brian Rosenthal
"I wouldn't walk alone at night if I were you. Especially if I don't know where I'm heading. Wallis Gale, at your service!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wallis_3.png

Gives directions in town, along with GPS.

  • Aborted Arc: The original Kickstarter listed Wallis as a petty cab driver.
  • Jump Scare: Pulls this on Artemis and Paul in his first appearance.
  • Nice Guy: Always friendly, energetic, and eager to help.
  • Translator Buddy: Despite GPS being completely capable of speaking, he whispers all directions into Wallis's ear first so he can deliver them to whomever asked.
  • Those Two Guys: With Garmin.

     Garmin Patrick Saget (GPS)

Garmin Patrick "GPS" Saget

Portrayed by: Paul Komoroski
"And I'm Garmen Patrick Safet, at your service, too!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gps.png

Gives directions in town, along with Wallis.

  • The Navigator: Knows the quickest route to get anywhere in town.
  • Nice Guy: Always friendly, enthusiastic and happy to help.
  • Punny Name: His initials spell "GPS," and he can give directions from wherever he is in town. The Garmin is also a brand of navigation systems, doubling the meaning.
  • Those Two Guys: With Wallis.

     Rev. Jeremiah Stillwater

Reverend Jeremiah "Jerry" Stillwater

Portrayed by: Sean Persaud
"No, my son, we are all equal in the eyes of God. Let her strike a holy man if she must. [Flinches] But only if she must."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jeremiah_2.png

The town's pastor. Has been completely unsuccessful in his efforts to convert the people of Connor Creek.

  • As the Good Book Says...: Parodied - some of the "Bible verses" he quotes are actually popular song lyrics. Oddly, he doesn't appear to be doing this on purpose.
  • Christian Rock: Parodied - by the epilogue, Jeremiah has taken to playing the guitar during services, changing the lyrics of rock songs to fit his service.
  • Hidden Depths: While we mostly see him playing the pastor role, he is revealed to be a lawyer as well in the preview for Chapter 7.
PAUL: Wait. You’re a reverend and a lawyer? Talk about W-W-J-D. note
  • Holier Than Thou: Played for laughs.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Jerry," which further highlights how little his religious authority is respected.
  • Preacher Man: Subverted and parodied. Despite being the only pastor in a small Western mining town (albeit a modern one), everyone spurns his attempts to get them to church.
  • Profound by Pop Song: Rev. Jeremiah Stillwater tends to quote lyrics rather than the actual Bible when trying to sound profound. Whether he is doing this on purpose is unclear.
Jeremiah: (reading from Bible, as the town council meeting descends into chaos) "As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[...] I take a look at my life and realize there's nothing left." (flipping through Bible) That's all of this sermon that I memorized.
  • Shameless Self-Promoter: Will take advantage of every and any opportunity to promote his church. Including claiming to be a werewolf.
  • Too Desperate to Be Picky: Jeremiah is willing to accept all denominations to his church, including werewolves.
Jeremiah: We don't even have to do church things!
