Be careful of spoilers below.

The Twins

    open/close all folders

     General

  • Aerith and Bob: Downplayed. Artemis's sophisticated name clashes with Paul's much more plain name, but neither is totally out there.
  • Audience Surrogate: Artemis and Paul, like the audience, are trying to get to the bottom of what's going on in Connor Creek, and ask the questions the audience would ask. Paul in particular reacts to cool or shocking moments in the case in ways similar to the intended audience's.
  • Brother–Sister Team: Fraternal twins who work together as investigative podcast journalists.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Spent their teenage years in and out of the foster homes, which lead to them getting into detective stories.
ARTEMIS: Maybe it was because of our big ‘ol unresolved past and uncertain future, but we always gravitated towards mysteries.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Paul is the foolish sibling to Artemis's responsible sibling.
  • From New York to Nowhere: Artemis and Paul, coming from Los Angeles, have a hard time fitting in to the backwards, untrusting Connor Creek, where there is no Starbucks, no Amazon Prime, and little technological advancements since 1989.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Most of the townspeople are suspicious the twins from the start, and it only gets worse as the attacks increase. Even by the epilogue, many still believe they were partially at fault even though Truman was revealed as the true villain. Justified, since most of the townspeople don't know Truman intended to kill everyone.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: By Episode 7, Artemis, usually the cautious one, is poised to dive deep into danger and put everything at risk for the story, while Paul, usually the goofball, is seriously worried for their safety. Turns into a breaking point for them.
    • Also, vegan Paul ordering steak and eggs, "hold the eggs," is a big clue that he's not-quite-human anymore.
  • Punny Name: Their last name sounds like "shoe horn," which doubles as Meaningful Name since the twins have been shoe-horned in where they don't belong.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: While Artemis is very serious, punctual, and well-prepared, Paul is more goofy, laidback and willing to go off on wild tangents.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Excitable Paul is the Red Oni to the level-headed Artemis's Blue Oni, subtly reflected in their wardrobe choices. Even more so after Paul is turned into a McMahon wolf, since their aura is red.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Inverted - Artemis is the savvy girl to Paul's energetic guy.
  • Secret-Keeper: Become this for the werewolves in Episode 7.
  • Seeker Archetype: While Artemis fits more cleanly (see Intrepid Reporter under her character folder), she and Paul fall under this, since they were each inspired by heroic detectives to uncover the truth as investigative journalists.
ARTEMIS: Our heroes were the sleuths, the gumshoes, the private eyes who sifted through murky waters to make sense of things. To shine a light in the darkness.
  • Spanner in the Works: The twins act as this for Truman's Long Game — their presence, particularly Artemis nominating Madison to run against Truman, forced her to escalate her plan faster than expected, and Paul's Trojan Prisoner gambit gave the protagonists the leverage they need to defeat her.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Downplayed. Many assume that "Paul" is a nickname for "Apollo," who is the twin of goddess Artemis in Classical Mythology, but he is only referred to as "Paul" throughout the series.
  • The Only One I Trust: Paul for Artemis. Which makes it all the harder when he decides not to help her in Episode 7.
  • Twin Telepathy: While they don't claim to know what the other is thinking, they have a unique understanding of each other that they call "twin-tuition." Artemis also has gets a Gut Feeling just seconds before finding out Paul was attacked.

Portrayed by: Mary Kate Wiles
"Paul, what do I always say? Luck is preparation meets hard work, meets promptness, meets being right, meets reading the new pitch notes."

The host of the second season of Wayward Guide to the Untrained Eye, alongside her twin brother, Paul.

  • Agent Scully: She was dismissive of Ryan's story until forced to take it to save her job, doesn't believe in tarot, based on her expression during the reading with Prism, and is immediately skeptical of the werewolf idea. Until she actually sees them, that is.
  • Berserk Button: Silas in particular seems to get under her skin.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Inverted - Artemis, who is not only female but the younger of the twins, is more likely to protect Paul than the other way around. This is also how she relates to Madison.
Artemis: My heart really felt for Madison with everything she was going through. Just like that, one day he was gone. I can’t imagine how awful losing a sibling would be, even if they didn’t always get along. Especially when your parents are gone too.
  • Challenge Seeker: The case brings out this side of her. Even as things get more dangerous for her, she is excited to be a part of a story that is going into uncharted territory, and has never felt more alive.
  • Character Development: After her experience in Connor Creek, Artemis learns to appreciate what is easily overlooked (like her brother Paul), and is more willing to entertain supernatural ideas.
  • Consummate Professional: Played straight, but later subverted. Artemis defines herself by her professionalism, down to her wardrobe choices. She tries to maintain objectivity and journalistic integrity throughout, which makes it all the more surprising (to herself as much as anyone else) when she nominates Madison to run against Truman.
Paul: You know that’s what I love about you, Artie. Your extraordinary sense of journalistic integrity can still be overtaken by your even more extraordinary sense of justice.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Mostly with her brother, but sometimes with others as well.
  • Fatal Flaw: While her ambition is not evil, it certainly complicates the investigation at times.
  • Fiery Redhead: Has her moments, particularly when bickering with Paul or confronting Silas.
  • For Great Justice: Has a deep sense of justice that sometimes gets the better of her.
  • Go-Getter Girl: See her character quote.
  • In-Series Nickname: Paul and Lesly call her "Artie."
  • Intrepid Reporter: While the Connor Creek story sort of fell in her lap, once she's in, she's all in and ready to find the truth.
Ryan: (to Artemis)...I hear the questions you ask, and it's not mere curiosity. No, you don't settle for anything less than the truth! That's right. Because if you can't figure that out, well it's gonna drive you cuckoobananas.
Paul: Whoa, he has you pegged!
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: While she agrees not to reveal that werewolves are real, it's clear that she's reluctant to do so, knowing the reveal would put them at the forefront of a major discovery.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: With Paul.
  • Meaningful Name: In Classical Mythology, Artemis is a twin, and the Greek goddess of the hunt and the moon - appropriate for a story with werewolves.
  • Not So Stoic: While she tries to be an objective professional, her concern for Paul, Madison, and the town's safety, as well as her sense of passion, comes out more and more as the series progresses.
Artemis: "Apathy is everyone's enemy," Desmond.
  • Only Sane Man: Compared to Paul and the zany characters of Connor Creek.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Despite her general intelligence and skills of observation, she dismisses Paul's concerns and symptoms that he's become half-werewolf until told point-blank.
  • Skeptic No Longer: As of Episode 4.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Madison and Desmond tell her off in Chapter 7 for getting too involved and putting too much pressure on others.
    • She herself gives this to Desmond, calling him a fool for seemingly falling into the werewolf hysteria.
  • Wrong Assumption: From early on, Artemis believes Silas and Miner Mole are the root of the corruption and murders in Connor Creek, believing Truman is just the Puppet King, and goes after him relentlessly. This comes back to bite her when Truman murders Silas in front of her and reveals she was the one using Silas to get revenge on the Connor wolves.

"What if I told you that I've got new, new pitch notes that I think you're going to like - a latte?"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/paul_1.png

The host of the second season of Wayward Guide to the Untrained Eye, alongside his twin sister, Artemis.

  • Agent Mulder: Believes that Prism has supernatural insight upon first meeting her and gets attached to the werewolf angle immediately.
  • Always Second Best: Implied to be this to Artemis. Despite that the Ryan Reynolds story was his idea, Artemis gets most of the credit. Artemis herself under-appreciates Paul to an extent (though justified, in that he doesn't appear to take things as seriously as she does).
  • Ascended Fanboy: The guy who has seen every iteration of The Wolfman becomes a werewolf himself. He also constantly comments on how cool the case is.
  • Bad Liar:
    • In Episode 9 as part of his Trojan Prisoner bit.
    • Also in podcast Chapter 8, when Artemis alludes to him being a werewolf.
PAUL: Artie, that’s not funny. I’m not—we’re not werewolves. That’s ridiculous.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: Downplayed. Went from a vegan who was grossed out by raw meat at the beginning of the series to a raw meat-eater due to his werewolf transition, but other than that his personality remains unchanged.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Paul has a strong instinct for what makes a good story, and is a charismatic podcast host. However, he tends to oversleep and comes in unprepared, especially compared to his sister.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: While he acts like a manchild and is not as diligent as his sister, the podcast shows he's actually quite good at his job.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Has a hard time keeping his mouth shut about werewolves, even after agreeing to keep the Masquerade secret.
  • Childish Older Sibling: Paul is only older than Artemis by 1 hour and 46 minutes, but is the more childish of the two by a lot.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Paul, despite his conspiracy theories and over-excitability, was proven right about:
    • The existence of werewolves in Connor Creek.
    • The murdering werewolf being an outsider (though he was wrong about the reason - he thought the werewolf would be repelled by the silver in the mines.)
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: A point of contention between him and Artemis throughout the series.
  • Easily Impressed: One acknowledgement from Lesly completely changes his mood, and he's quickly convinced that Prism's readings are legitimate.
  • Endearingly Dorky: His glasses, preference for puns, and pop culture references make him this.
  • Forgot to Pay the Bill: His roommate reminds Paul to Venmo him for the monthly utilities while he's away.
  • Genre Savvy: Between the town's history, the suspicious nature of his attack, his fast-healing wound, his nightmare, and his craving for meat, Paul quickly assesses, "I think I'm a werewolf now." He is half-right.
  • Healing Factor: Dr. Henry remarks he's healing remarkably fast from his attack in Episode 4. This is the first hint Paul is now half-werewolf.
  • The Heart: Of the two, Paul is a little more personable and empathetic to the interview subjects. He also looks out for Artie by making sure to have snacks on hand for her and trying to cheer her up.
  • Held Back in School: Downplayed - Paul mentions he was held back in fourth grade, but it isn't treated as a comment on his intelligence or character.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: In Episode 9, Paul struggles to activate his Game Face and asks Desmond how to get his fangs out in order to help.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Has moments of inappropriate punning that come off as this.
  • Manchild: Gets called this multiple times by other people.
  • Meaningful Name: His name could be short for "Apollo," the god of the sun and twin of Artemis in Greek Mythology. Considering his sunny disposition in comparison to his twin sister's, the name is appropriate. Also ironic, since he's the one who gets turned into a werewolf.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Paul gets obsessed with werewolves once he knows the possibility exists, uses The Babadook and the creature from The Shape of Water as options for a "Boink, Kill, Marry" game, and has seen every iteration of The Wolfman, implying this.
PAUL: What can I say? I had werewolves on the mind. And I was prepared to talk it out with anyone who was willing to listen.
ARTEMIS: That “anyone” was me. Indiscriminately. Anytime, anywhere.
  • Pungeon Master: His most prominent character trait (see character quote above).
  • Straw Vegetarian: Averted - while it is mentioned that Paul is a vegan, and he gets nauseated watching Olivia and Vern eat raw meat, he doesn't have a typical vegan build and never brings it up as a point of contention. No longer a vegan as of Episode 5.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Zig-Zagged. His sister is obviously the more favored of the two at APN, but Paul still loves and supports his sister without resenting her for it. However, he gets disgruntled when he's overlooked by Artemis herself.
  • Super-Senses: Paul develops super hearing and super smell as part of becoming half-werewolf.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: His dream in Episode 4 has him see himself with fangs and glowing eyes, which is what gets him to suspect he's become a werewolf. Downplayed, as this isn't properly confirmed until Episode 7.
  • Underdressed for the Occasion: Paul is constantly seen in a hoodie and jeans, compared to his professionally-dressed sister.
