Pre-Collapse

    United States of America
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/us_totaflag.png
Official Name: United States of America
Ruling Party: Republican Party
Ideology: Social Conservatismnote
Once a powerful world superpower following its victory in the Second World War, the attempted nuclear bombing of Hanoi by President Goldwater in 1967 caused the United States to be expelled from NATO and lose most of its international influence. By 2021, the US is experiencing an unprecedented amount of political polarization and now teeters on the edge of collapse after the assassination of President-elect Bernie Sanders.
  • Authority in Name Only: California and Idaho, despite nominally answering to the government in Washington D.C. are essentially separate countries with their own brand of politics/governance.
  • Crapsaccharine World: The USA, despite having lost the Cold War, is a highly advanced nation that houses the world's wealthiest companies and is at the forefront of the digital age. Aside from that however, the US has many societal problems and ends up becoming more divided than it was during the period leading up to the first civil war. Aside from the literal race war in the Pacific Northwest currently ongoing and two states essentially being independent from the federal government, the political situation in the country has degenerated to the point that a second civil war is inevitable.
  • Dark Horse Victory: The United States' main Point of Divergence in this timeline is the escalation of the Vietnam War and President Goldwater's assassination leading to the Dixiecrat Freedom Party ascending to the presidency, and this strong third-party showing allows Ross Perot to win the 1992 election under his Reform Party (helped in part to the Democrats and Republicans having internal disputes within their own parties).
  • Divided States of America: California and Idaho's own local politics are so divorced from the rest of America's that they are de facto independent states. As time goes on, America's divisions will become irreconcilable, and the country will face the horrors of a Second American Civil War. Worse, this time it will be a multi-polar civil war, with many different warlords and factions all battling to conquer one another and neutral parties in an effort to crown themselves proper successor-states, and many of them are insane.
  • Friendly Rival: The Détente between the Soviet Union and United States during the Cold War did not halt in the TotA timeline thanks to Kosygin and his reformists taking power, ultimately leading to more of a collaborative spirit developing between the two superpowers. That being said, both acknowledge the fundamental differences in their ideologies and this relationship will change (mostly for the worse) depending on who wins the Second American Civil War.
  • Mêlée à Trois: America is embroiled at the start of the mod in the "Cascadian Conflict", essentially an American version of the The Troubles between Native Americans (represented by AIM and the NAARP), Neo-Nazis (represented by the ANP) and the local state governments.
  • Right-Wing Militia Fanatic: A bunch of them are running around the countryside and are much stronger than they are IRL thanks to previous presidents tolerating them.
  • Warhawk: Former President Barry Goldwater, as in IRL, was very much in favor of more violent measures to defeat the Soviet Union. Not only that, but he chose fellow warhawk Curtis "Bombs Away" LeMay as his running mate in the 1964 Election and won. Thanks to Goldwater, The Vietnam War in the TotA timeline was a much bloodier affair and ultimately culminated in a botched nuclear bombing of Hanoi that still killed hundreds of people.
  • While Rome Burns: It's mentioned in one of Seychelles' focuses that the CIA is still putting out kill orders and hiring Seychellois mercenaries to assert American interests despite the worsening political situation in their homeland.

Alexander B. Johnson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alexanderb.png
Role: Head of State
Party: Republican Party
Ideology: Social Conservatismnote
The current president of the United States. He's nearly at the end of his second term by the mod's start, and will soon have to give up his position in spite of domestic turmoil.
  • Alternate History: Due to British politics leaning further left than in OTL, Boris' parents stay in New York City and raise him as a transatlantic American. Despite these changed circumstances, he still gets into politics and eventually leads to him becoming POTUS by 2021.
  • Middle Name Basis: Averted, unlike in real life. The man commonly known as Boris Johnson in OTL is instead referred to as President Alexander in the alternate 2021.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Alexander keeps his signature messy hairstyle even as an American citizen who later becomes president.

    State of California
Flag of the Corporate Patchwork of America
Flag of the Federation of America
Flag of the Columbian Republic
Flag of the Promethean Social Republic
Official Name: State of California, Corporate Patchwork of America (Yarvin, American reunification), Federation of America (Miscavige, American reunification), Columbian Republic (Spencer, American reunification), Promethean Social Republic (Jorjani, American reunification)
Ruling Party: Forward Party
Ideology: Corporatocracynote
Since the 70s, the politics of California have been dominated by the technocratic Forward Party and supported by various corporations like Apple and Microsoft. California's already odd situation would become much more outlandish following the election of Governor Yarvin who, with the help of his mysterious inner circle based in the Tahoe City and County Resort, proceeded to turn the state into his own personal kingdom with himself as king.

Curtis "Mencius" Yarvin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/curtisyarvin_tota_4.png
Role: Head of State
Party: Forward Party
Ideology: Corporatocracynote
The technocratic governor of California, who won office with the help of "Big Tech" companies and other eccentric individuals. Yarvin's tenure has seen the state turned into his own personal fiefdom, complete with a "round-table" of elite individuals that act as his inner circle. With the rest of America descending into extremism and chaos however, it remains to be seen if Yarvin and his medieval-like court can weather the coming storms.
  • Allohistorical Allusion: In our world, Curtis Yarvin and Nick Land are the co-founders of the so-called "Dark Enlightenment," an anti-democratic, anti-egalitarian far-right accelerationist movement. Here, where Nick Land has relocated to Japan to try to put his ideas into practice, the Japanese government are the international supporters and patrons of Yarvin's statelet in the Second American Civil War.
  • Authority in Name Only: As shown in one of his events, most CEOs in the Corporate Patchwork don't really listen to Yarvin and rule their provinces without any interference from him. They can't even choose a flag until Steve Jobs joins their discussion and unites everyone behind Yarvin's flag proposal.
  • Divided States of America: The Corporate Patchwork of America consists of 10 autonomous provinces note .
  • Feudal Future: Yarvin's eclectic brand of technocratic oligarchy deliberately attempts to combine corporatocratic elitism with neo-monarchism, with accountable monarchs and governors selected like corporate CEOs. Fittingly, his vision of a united America is divided into autonomous corporate fiefs.
  • One Nation Under Copyright: If Yarvin is successful in unifying America, he will divide the nation into a confederation of autonomous polities controlled by corporations.

David Miscavige

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/davidmiscavige_tota_0.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Anocratic Liberalismnote
The current leader of the infamous Church of Scientology and a potential leader of the State of California.
  • The Theocracy: Despite Miscavige's claims to the contrary, Scientology's status as the state religion and Scientologists holding the majority of government positions result in the Federation fitting this trope quite well.

Richard B. Spencer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/totarichardbspencer_0.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: New Rightnote
A leading figure within California's Alt-Right and a potential leader of the State of California.
  • The Empire: After reunifying the US, Spencer can invade and occupy other North & South American countries, creating an massive, unstable, continent-spanning empire. note
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Downplayed. Despite being an avowed white supremacist, Spencer leans positively towards Gay and Trans people.

Jason Reza Jorjani

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rezajorjani_tota_8.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Right-Libertarianismnote
Potential leader of the State of California
  • Fantastic Science: Subverted. Jorjani's belief in Parapsychology is unlikely to bear fruit.
  • Foreign Culture Fetish: Should Jorjani succeed in unifying the US, he will violently revolutionize American culture by implementing Zoroastrian aesthetics and Indo-European paganism.

Kim Jong-Un

Role: Head of State
A member of the Californian elite, and the most "progressive" among his peers in Governor Yarvin's inner circle.
  • Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman: Due to the formation of a unified, anti-Marxist Korea after the end of WWII, Kim Jong-Il fled to the US and became a wildly renowned director in the 60's. Kim Jong-Un inherited both his father's wealth and elite status, allowing him to become the one of loudest progressive (by comparison) figures within Yarvin's inner circle.

    State of Idaho
Flag of the Northwest Aryan Front
Flag of American Realm
Flag of the American White Republic
Flag of the Revolutionary United Aryan Republics
Flag of White Aryan Reich
Official Name: State of Idaho, Northwest Aryan Front (Civil War), American Realm (Johnson, American reunification), American White Republic (Mathews, American reunification), Revolutionary United Aryan Republics (Mason, American reunification), White Aryan Reich (Covington, American reunification)
Ruling Party: American Nazi Party
Ideology: Insurrectionary Fascismnote
In 2014, the continuing anger of white supremacists against the federal government and Native American organizations in the Pacific Northwest came to a head when the so-called "Gem State" elected openly Neo-Nazi William Luther Pierce as its governor. Pierce and his American Nazi Party have wasted no time in turning Idaho into the ideal white homeland, while also preparing their paramilitaries for the inevitable large-scale conflict.
  • Evil Old Folks: Pierce, Matthews, Mason and Covington are all legally senior citizens uncompromising in their Neo-Nazi beliefs.
  • From Bad to Worse: Impressively, given they begin the game as neo-Nazis engaging in a race war, three of the Front's four paths go even crazier than neo-Nazism already is.
  • Nazi Protagonist: No matter what story path it takes, the Northwest Aryan Front is unavoidably Neo-Nazi.

William Luther Pierce

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pierce_tota.png
Role: Head of State
Party: American Nazi Party
Ideology: Insurrectionary Fascismnote
The Governor of Idaho and current leader of the American Nazi Party. He organizes the Northwest Aryan Front in the chaos of the federal government's collapse.
  • Dark Lord on Life Support: Pierce is essentially hanging on by a thread at the start of the mod, only being kept alive by stem cell treatments, gene therapy and various other medical techniques. His poor health is also a likely reason why he can't personally unify the US.
  • Evil Old Folks: At 90 years old, Pierce is the leader of the American Nazi Party and leads the most conventionally evil faction in the American Collapse.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Due to advances in medical technology, Pierce has survived 22 years more than he did OTL.

Greg Johnson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/greg_johnson.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Neo-Nazismnote
Potential leader of the Northwest Aryan Front.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Johnson is still a Nazi who wishes to establish a completely white America, but he at least wants to build a functional nation-state. He is considerably less deranged or bloodthirsty than Pierce's other three potential successors, two of whom have embraced bizarre and esoteric ideas and the third of whom doesn't have much of a plan besides shooting up people angry rural racists dislike.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Johnson is a Neo-Nazi and wears glasses in his portrait.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Johnson seeks to establish "Suit & Tie" Nazism, hoping to emphasize the more presentable aspects of the regime.
  • Wicked Pretentious: Like his Nazi forebearers, Johnson misappropriates German Paganist imagery to try to make his state grander and more respectable than it actually is. His victory superevent plays music from Richard Wagner.

Robert Jay Mathews

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/robert_jay_mathews_tota_1.png
Role: Head of State
Party: National Socialist Liberation Front
Ideology: Ecofascismnote
Potential leader of the Northwest Aryan Front.
  • Eco-Terrorist: Played with and later Averted. Despite what you might assume based on Mathews' ideology of Ecofacism, it's mostly just a pretense to destroy "racially impure" cities and transition the country toward a radically agrarian fascist dictatorship.
  • Badass Bandolier: A Villainous example.
  • Evil Old Folks: He's a 70 years old Nazi.
  • For Want Of A Nail: OTL Mathews died in a Shootout with the FBI in 1984.
  • Sinister Shades: Mathews is a Neo-Nazi and wears sunglasses in his portrait.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Inflicted on Mathews' enemies.

James Mason

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mason_tota.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Insurrectionary Fascismnote
Potential leader of the Northwest Aryan Front.
  • Alternate History: Unlike OTL, Mason never founds Atomwaffen Division and stays with the National Socialist Liberation Front.
  • Dirty Old Man: Mason has a long and sordid list of pedophilia or child pornography related charges.
  • Evil Old Folks: He's a 71 years old Nazi terrorist.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Mason is a Neo-Nazi and wears glasses in his portrait.
  • Psycho Supporter: Mason idolizes Charles Manson and Heinrich Himmler, incorporating Manson's "Helter-Skelter" theory and Himmler's esotericism into his own strain of Neo-Nazism.
  • Rape, Pillage, and Burn: Mason believes that Nazism can only be established via the total collapse of American society, he hopes to achieve this via a campaign of mass terror. His superevent music is the shredding guitars of a heavy metal cover of "Helter Skelter".

Harold Covington

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haroldcovington_tota.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Neo-Nazismnote
Potential leader of the Northwest Aryan Front.
  • Evil Old Folks: Convington is 70 years old at game start and an avowed Neo-Nazi.
  • Half-Witted Hillbilly: Primarily Type 3. The bulk of Covington's supporters are lower class whites who are only interested in Nazism as an excuse to destroy "liberalism" and kill minorities.

Nancy Pelosi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nancypelosi_5.png
Role: Head of State
Party: Forward Party (Right/Yarvinities)
Ideology: Anocratic Liberalismnote
The current Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives who takes power after the death of President-elect Sanders and Johnson stepping down.
  • Contempt Crossfire: Pence and the rest of the American right hate her for attempting to enforce social progressivism on America while those on the left detest Pelosi for her semi-autocratic tendencies.
  • Iron Lady: After Pelosi takes power following Sanders' death and Boris stepping down, she moves to suspend much of the USA's democratic process while turning herself into its sole ruler.
  • Succession Crisis: At the start of the mod, Pelosi has come out on top after the assassination of President-Elect Bernie Sanders before he even has a chance to take office produces one.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Pelosi has legitimate, positive ideals and wishes to create a prosperous America that treats its people fairly. She's just distressingly willing to abandon democracy to achieve that aim.

Official Name: American Republic Command Center "Prime", American Republic (American reunification), Holy Commonwealth Of America (Kanye West)
Ruling Party: Republican Party
Ideology: Social Conservatismnote
A rival Republican government to Pelosi that splits from the United States after she starts making increasingly autocratic moves.
  • Glory Days: Ever since the devastating usage of nukes in Vietnam, the USA has lost a lot of prestige in the world, and by the ACW has effectively lost the Cold War. Pence and his conservatives obviously aren't big fans of this and want to "revitalize" America and put it back as the leading superpower on the world stage again.

Mike Pence

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mikepence.png
Role: Head of State
Party: Republican Party
Ideology: Social Conservatismnote

  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Mike Pence's brand of American Christian conservatism is stifling, but he's at least a firm believer in democracy and certain Christian-centric forms of classical liberal freedoms, like rule of law and (theoretical if not practical) anti-racism. The various kinds of successors or internal opposition who can seize power if he's impeached or assassinated are all much, much worse than him on both fronts.

Kanye West

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ye_2021.png
Role: Head of State (Pence assassinated)
Ideology: Theocracynote

  • The Fundamentalist: Pence and the rest of his successors are open Christian nationalists, but Kanye takes it much farther by abolishing the republic and creating a "Holy Commonwealth" in its place.
  • The Theocracy: Kanye West immediately turns the American Republic into a Christian theocracy known as the "Holy Commonwealth of America" after he succeeds Pence.
  • Sinister Shades: Kanye West is a theocratic Christian nationalist and wears shades in his portrait.

  • President for Life: Following his ascension to the presidency, Yiannopoulos passes multiple extensive constitutional amendments which make him a dictator in all but name.
  • President Evil: One of his first acts after solidifying power is to restrict voting by mandating extensive "mental fitness tests" which echo segregationist voter restriction policies.
  • Sinister Shades: Yiannopoulos is depicted wearing shades and will rule as a dictator.

  • Token Evil Teammate: Out of all the potential Free State Alliance leaders, Hostetter is the most extreme.
  • Gun Nut: Hostetter is extremely protective of the Second Amendment.
  • Foil: Hostetter is in many ways a foil to Demott Shea: Both served as chief of police in their respective regions, Shea will repeal the second Amendment while Hostetter will expand and reinforce it, and Shea will cause America to fall under an authoritarian police state while Hostetter (Despite his right-wing nativist beliefs) embraces libertarianism. YMMV

Alaska

    Alaskan National Republic
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/national_republic.png
Official Name: State of Alaska, Alaskan National Republic (Alaskan Civil War)
Ruling Party: Alaskan Independence Party - Libertarian Party of Alaska
Ideology: Right-Libertarianismnote
Following the total collapse of the United States, a government comprised of the former members of the local Constitution and Libertarian parties is established in Alaska to keep the peace. Said peace is interrupted by a contingent of Soviet forces arriving in Anchorage to "ensure a peaceful democratic government".
  • Civil War: Amazingly, Alaska is already in the Second American Civil War but soon enough collapses into its own two-way civil war between the Americans and Soviets in the region. It is quite literally a civil war within a civil war.
  • People's Republic of Tyranny: What the Alaskan People's Republic accuses them of being, a Libertarian "national republic" with way too many pseudo-fascistic tendencies that is on the payroll of oil magnates and other billionaires.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The forces of the Alaskan National Republic are made out of militias with no experience in actual combat, old war veterans who can still fight in their old age and various other ragtag members who want to defend the nascent republic from the Soviets and their allies.

    Provisional Government of Hawai'i
Flag of the Republic of Hawai'i
Official Name: Provisional Government of Hawai'i, United States Navy In The Pacific (Sohaney), Kingdom of Hawai'i (Kahele), Republic of Hawai'i (Ige)
A "provisional government" established in Hawaii following the collapse of authority in the American mainland. While it seems stable on the surface, the factions within the government are currently engaged in a "cold war" where they vie for power through political intrigue and debate.
  • Divided We Fall: There are three main factions in Hawaii, and all of them have radically different visions for its future.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: America having a civil war allows the Hawaiians to gain independence from the Federal Government. That being said, declaring independence is much easier than actually governing the country and a mini cold war between the Republicans, the Monarchists and even the US Navy breaks out soon after.
  • Puppet State:
    • Downplayed with a pro-Japanese Republic of Hawaii, which retains its independence but starts to rely on Japan through signing of mutual self-defense treaties.
    • Played straight with a US Navy Hawaii however, which becomes no more than an outpost of the Pelosi government that denies the West Coast warlords naval access.
  • The Remnant: Whatever remains of the US Navy are now stationed in Hawaii. They are allied with Pelosi's loyalists in the archipelago, and can end up seizing power.

Mark Sohaney

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sohaney.png
Role: Naval Commander, Head of State (US Navy victory)
Ideology: Military Governancenote
The commander of the US Navy forces stationed in Hawaii.
  • Loyal to the Position: Implied to be the reason why Sohaney sides with Pelosi. After all, despite her dictatorial tendencies, Pelosi is still the commander-in-chief of the US armed forces.

David Ige

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/david_ige.png
Role: Head of State (Republican victory)
Ideology: Progressivismnote

Kaiali’i Kahele

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaialii_kahele_2.png
Role: Head of State (Monarchist victory)
Ideology: National Liberalismnote
The Prime Minister of Hawaii under the King, who can return and chart Hawaii on a new, neutral course.
  • Choosing Neutrality: The reborn Kingdom Of Hawaii stays out of the world's conflicts, refusing to align with either Japan or a reunified USA.
  • Take a Third Option: Instead of bowing to the Japanese or returning to the US, Kahele opts for a completely independent Hawaii that remains non-aligned to either side.

Quentin I

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/quentin_i.png
Role: King of Hawaii (Monarchist victory)
Ideology: Conservatism
The long-gone Hawaiian Monarchy may be reinstated with Quentin as the first new king in over 100 years.
  • Rightful King Returns After being a member of the US for a century, the Hawaiian monarchy may finally return to its place on the throne of an independent island.

Ideology: Managerial Bureaucracynote

    New York City
Official Name: New York City, American Reconstruction Authority (Shea, American reunification), United States of America (Obama, American reunification)
Ideology: Military Governancenote

Micheal Bloomberg

Role: Head of State
Ideology: Military Governancenote

Demott Shea

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nypd_demottshea.png
Role: Head of State
Party: New York Police Department
Ideology: Military Governancenote

  • Lethal Joke Character: As ridiculous as it might seem that the New York Police Department, of all organizations, has a good shot at reuniting a shattered America, it must be noted that the NYPD is bigger than half the world's militaries and has a budget that puts it in the upper 30's of world military spending. They're well-organized, well-armed, and, in the absence of a united opposition, well-equipped to "restore order" by force.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Invoked; Shea is certainly this for many of the libertarian unifiers both right and left, especially the anarchists.
  • Police State: In the most literal possible sense; Shea rules over his statelet through his control of the police force as an effective military dictator.

Barack Hussein Obama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cubanobama.png
Role: Head Of State (Return from Cuba)
Ideology: Progressivismnote
The 49th president of the United States, who fled to Cuba after a failed coup attempt against the Johnson administration.
  • The Coup: After losing re-election thanks to a large number of faithless electors casting votes for Johnson (in part because of both his progressive views and speculation around his citizenship), Obama rallied a legion of his supporters to march on the US Capitol. Said coup was crushed by the military, leading to Obama fleeing to Cuba. He will also only claim control of New York in a second coup if the New York Police Department performs poorly while trying to conquer New England.
  • The Exile: Obama fled to Cuba after his coup attempt failed, and lives in relatively comfortable exile at the start of the mod. He will only return once America collapses.
  • Historical In-Joke: In our world, Barack Obama famously spent much of his immediate post-presidency enjoying himself in the Caribbean and relaxing. Here, while he still seems to have enjoyed himself in Cuba following his presidency, it was as a result of fleeing after an unsuccessful coup attempt. For that matter, IRL it was his successor, Donald Trump, who attempted to launch a coup to remain in power after losing a free and fair election, attempting to justify it with baseless conspiracy theories about it somehow being stolen; here Obama at least has the excuse that his losing the presidency was the result of faithless electors subverting the legitimate result of a free and fair election he'd won due to baseless conspiracy theories and personal dislike of his politics (and/or, implicitly, his race).

    American Revolutionary Committee

Flag of the American Collective
Flag of the American People's Union
Official Name: American Revolutionary Committee, United People's Republics of America (Maupin, American reunification), American Collective (Srnicek, American reunification), American People's Union (Fuller, American reunification)
Ideology: Left-Wing Nationalismnote

John Fetterman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tota_john_fetterman.jpg
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Soviet Market Systemnote

  • Rightful King Returns: A republican variant. Fetterman does have a reasonable claim on the Presidency, having been Vice President Elect before President Elect Sanders's assassination. Unfortunately, he does not seem to be able to actually reunite the shattered United States personally, and all three of his potential successors have glaring flaws; none of them even share an ideology with him.
  • Take Up My Sword: John Fetterman was Bernie Sanders's VP candidate during the election, and now seeks to continue Sanders' legacy after his assassination.

Caleb Maupin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/calebmaupin.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Left-Wing Nationalismnote

  • Eagleland: As with OTL, Maupin is a rare left-wing Type 1, perceiving the socialist revolution as the spiritual continuation of the American Revolution.

Nick Srnicek

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nicksrnicek.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Left-Accelerationismnote

  • Defector from Decadence: Srnicek and his ideology split from Nikku Lando's neoreactionary Dark Enlightenment philosophy in favor of a more socialist interpretation.
  • Emperor Scientist: Srnicek establishes an (ostensibly temporary) socialist scientocracy with the goal of advancing humanity to a state of "Fully Automated Gay Space Communism".

Cameron Fuller

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cameronfuller.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Religious Socialismnote

  • Martial Pacifist: Quakers famously reject the use of violence in all circumstances, but Fuller's American People's Union can only come into being through victory in a huge civil war.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Despite his egalitarian philosophy, Fuller is homophobic and transphobic.
  • Right-Hand Cat: A non-villainous example. Fuller's portrait displays him with his cat.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Fuller and the Crimson Coats are devoted to the principles and implementation of Quaker Socialism.

    Lakotah Republic
Flag of the Plurinational Republic of America
Flag of Great Turtle Island
Flag of the Greater Amerindia Patria
Flag of The Sacred Kingdom of Turtle Island and the Holy Light
Official Name: Lakotah Republic, Plurinational Republic of America (Cardinal, American reunification), Turtle Island Federation (Looking-Cloud, American reunification), Great Turtle Island (Peltier, American reunification), Greater Amerindia Patria (Machunashi, American reunification), The Sacred Kingdom of Turtle Island and the Holy Light (Miller, American reunification)
Since the Wounded Knee incident in the 1980s, several Native American resistance groups based in the Pacific Northwest have engaged in a low-level war with state authorities and white supremacist militias. Following the outbreak of the civil war, an uneasy alliance is formed between them.
  • Dark Horse Victory: The Lakotah Republic is in arguably the worst position of any of the statelets of the Second American Civil War, with neither intra-American allies like the Free States Alliance, the American Republic, or the rump United States government, nor lots of territory and a highly militarized population like the Northwest Aryan Front or the State of California. Even the Anti-Fascists, American Revolutionaries, and New York City Police Department are only fighting across pretty narrow fronts against limited opponents and enjoy strategic territory that includes several major coastal cities. They're also very under-industrialized, with only a handful of civilian factories and no military factories. The Lakotah Republic's only real advantages are Chinese volunteer support (and every other faction in the war enjoys their own foreign supporters of various stripes) and highly mountainous western terrain that's a double-edged sword for making meaningful advances against the neo-Nazis.
  • The Federation:
    • The Plurinational Republic Of America functions as a union between all of the different ethnic groups and "nations" within America, where each ethnic group co-exists with one another in harmony. This is even reflected by their flag, which shows the cultural and geographical makeup of the US (the Native Northwest, the predominantly White New England and the African-Americans in the Deep South) as free-flowing shapes that compliment each other.
    • Downplayed with the Turtle Island Federation, despite the name, which has only the Native Americans in charge and discriminates against the non-natives. Despite this, their leader Arlo Looking-Cloud promises following a successful American reunification that people of all colors will be tolerated and that individual communities can have self-governance.
  • Flock of Wolves: The FBI, much like in real life, has a lot of contacts and informants within the American Indian Movement and it gets really hard to discern who is friend or foe. At the very least, it appears they have none within the Fourth Worldists or the NAARP.
  • Historical Badass Upgrade: The AIM and NAARP promoting having more kids as a form of resistance leads to a larger Indian population by 2021, in turn allowing them to carve their own state out of the collapsed USA.

Harold Cardinal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cardinal_0.png
Role: Head of State
Party: Fourth Worldists
Ideology: Democratic Socialismnote
A popular Cree writer who leads the Fourth Worldists, a moderate faction within the Lakotah Republic. Cardinal is a big proponent of Plurinationalism, of "many nations inside one" and believes it to be the ultimate solution to unite the many different nations within America.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The Lakotah Republic's awful start makes any victory a monumental struggle, but if Cardinal can come out on top of both the raging fires of the Second American Civil War and his own radicalized internal opposition, the Plurinational Republic of America is one of the best possible outcomes for the war, carrying forward the best of the old United States' commitment to liberty without the wretched baggage of white supremacy and oligarchy. His ending superevent demonstrates this with the fireworks Americans traditionally use to celebrate Independence Day going off over the soothing sounds of rainfall and the anthem of the American Indian Movement being sung.

Arlo Looking-Cloud

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/looking_cloud.png
Role: Head of State
Party: American Indian Movement
Ideology: Left-Wing Nationalismnote
The current leader of the American Indian Movement following the death of fellow Lakotah activist Russell Means.
  • Take Up My Sword: Looking-Cloud wishes to carry on the legacy of deceased activist Russel Means.

Leonard Peltier

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leonard_peltier_tota.png
Role: Head of State
Party: Red Power Movement
Ideology: New Left Socialismnote

  • Chummy Commies: The Red Power Movement consists of a motley bunch of Marxists, Eco-Socialists, New Left Situationists and various New-Age Retro Hippie types.
  • Great Escape: Peltier uses the American collapse as an opportunity to escape from prison in Florida.

Tapa Machunashi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tapamach.png
Role: Head of State
Party: National Amerindianist American Redman's Party
Ideology: Ethno-Supremacismnote
The current General Secretary of the NAARP, the most extreme faction in the Lakotah Republic, wishing to deport anyone who's not Amerindian or Asian.
  • Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp": Owing to the NAARP's pseudo-historical beliefs about ethnic migration, they refer to both Native Americans and Asians as "Mongolians".
  • Commie Nazis: The NAARP's ideology is a mix of right wing ethno-supremacist beliefs and socialism.
  • Earn Your Bad Ending: The Lakotah Republic's awful start makes any victory a monumental struggle, but if Machunashi emerges dominant both within it and amidst the raging fires of the Second American Civil War, he'll be free to build his genocidal vision, with deportations and worse. Cheerily, the Superevent music for his victory is "The End" by The Doors.
  • A Nazi by Any Other Name: The NAARP want to exterminate anyone who isn't Amerindian, Asian or Hispanic and their uniforms are explicitly inspired by Hitler and the NSDAP.
  • Persecution Flip: What effectively happens in the event of the NAARP reuniting America, with deportations based on blood alone and re-settlements (not too dissimilar to the ones from the Manifest Destiny era) becoming commonplace in the Greater Ameridia Patria.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Out of the four possible leaders of the Lakotah Republic, Machunashi is the only one who actively seeks to build a society based on racial supremacy.

Official Name: Anti-Fascist Pacific Northwest, Confederation of Autonomous Zones (Gillis/Kochinski), Free Communes in North America (Grace, American reunification), Free Territories of North America (Clark, American reunification), Turtle Island (Aragorn!, American reunification), Nammu (Nyxus, American reunification)
Ruling Party: Anti-Fascist Action
Ideology: New Left Socialismnote

  • Anarchy Is Chaos: Averted. Many of the Confederation's outcomes are pretty nuts, but with the exception of Aragorn!'s, none of them involve the total destruction of all organized society.

Sarah Iannarone

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sarah_iannarone.png
Role: Head of State
Party: Anti-Fascist Action
Ideology: New Left Socialismnote
Leader of the Confederation of Autonomous Zones.
  • The Faceless: Iannarone's portrait has her face partially covered by a gas mask.

William Gillis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gillis.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Mutualismnote
Potential leader of the Confederation of Autonomous Zones.
  • Political Overcorrectness: After unifying the US, Gillis and his supporters will begin a Cultural Revolution to destroy "American Culture" which they consider inherently fascist.

Ian Kochinski

Role: Head of State
Ideology: Mutualismnote
Potential leader of the Confederation of Autonomous Zones.

Laura Jane Grace

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/laura_jane_grace.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Collectivist Anarchismnote
Potential leader of the Confederation of Autonomous Zones.
  • Punk Rock: Grace is the founder, lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of punk rock band Against Me!
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Grace forgoes the philosophy of the gradual implantation of anarchism practiced by many in the confederation in favor of immediate collectivization.

Spencer Clark

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spencer_clark.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Mutualismnote
Potential leader of the Confederation of Autonomous Zones.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The national motto, Ars Gratia Artis, is Latin for "Art for art's sake".
  • Psychedelic Rock: Clark is an experimental musician whose work occasionally falls under the umbrella of this trope. It's implied that should he reunify the US; his Free Territories of North America will incorporate art and music into its governmental structure.
  • Shoddy Knockoff Product: Many of these are likely to appear as a result of Spencer abolishing Copyright.
  • Mad Artist: Averted. Spencer may have odd ideas and powerful artistic drive, but these do a "Mad Artist" not make.

Aragorn!

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aragorn_7.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Post-Left Anarchismnote
Potential leader of the Confederation of Autonomous Zones.
