Chaldea

Main Characters

    Izuku Midoriya

Humanity's Last Master

"You have to be a little mad to be a hero."

The last master of humanity and protagonist of this story. Born quirkless he was relentlessly bullied by his classmates before being offered the final spot to join Chaldea as a potential master. By a stroke of luck he ended up surviving the bombing that incapacitated the other masters and joins Mash in fighting back against the Singularities. By another stroke of luck, despite his subpar knowledge of magic, he is considered the greatest master of the Servants due to his empathy.

  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Izuku is The Unscorcerer in canon, eventually getting One for All from All Might. Here, he has access to magecraft, with it being revealed that Quirks and Magic Corcuits are apparently incompatible.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Caster Cu Chulainn calls him "Bean Sprout" and "Mumbles" while Archer Emiya calls him "Problem Child."
  • All-Loving Hero: The precise reason why he's such a powerful master despite his subpar mana is because he is able to empathize with each of his servants, even Gilles De Rais; however, he notes when Gilles becomes his Caster self that Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse, though he does get his Freudian Excuse.
  • Berserk Button: Izuku does not take kindly to those who insult or threaten those he cares about.
    • He doesn't appreciate it when his servants being misgendered, even accidentally like Dr. Roman did. Da Vinci finds it cute, d'Eon appreciates it.
    • When some drunk French Soldiers got upset and started insulting Medusa for rejecting them, Izuku was just about ready to fight them before settling with a "The Reason You Suck" Speech aimed at them.
    • At the end of Alba's ranting when he implied that he would hurt Mash for disobeying him, Izuku simply asks, "Are you finished?", before swiftly disarming him and destroying his Mystic Code.
    • But one of his most specific buttons is the word "useless". Calling any of his Servants by that word is enough to earn a Death Glare, even the ones that Izuku has his own issues with (i.e., Mozart and Stheno.) Said goddess calling her sister Medusa "useless" in passing was enough to make Izuku punch a hole in a cavern wall. Indeed, Stheno made sure to take notice that after everything she'd done to get a reaction from him, that was what really got to him. As of yet, certain members of Chaldea have taken notice of this trait, but even they remain unaware of exactly why Izuku takes such issue with the word.
  • Beyond the Impossible: He gained magic circuits after the first singularity, which has been compared to spontaneously growing a second nervous system. The fact he wasn't in even more pain was astonishing to the people who figured this out.
  • Bi-Wildered: Izuku is a nervous wreck around sexuality under the best of circumstances, never mind the literal end of the world. He has a difficult time concealing his attraction to girls, considering how flustered he gets around them, but for quite some time, his thoughts about the attractive men in Chaldea were confined to a drunken ramble in Okeanos. By the time Diarmuid ua Duibhne arrives in Chaldea, Izuku even notes to himself that it's getting harder to ignore.
  • Break the Cutie: Lev killing Olga Marie was the starting point, but after his Mind Rape in Septem he's in a spiraling depression and refuses to seek help.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He always feels the need to start running and saving people. This puts him at odds with his role as a master, where he has to send someone else to do the fighting.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Artoria (Alter) after her Interlude, where while they can't agree on what's best for Mash, the two have buried the hatchet and strive to continue doing what is best for her.
  • Fish out of Water: He never knew magic was real, so when Olga Marie learns about this, she's flabbergasted he's such a successful master.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: He finds everything that went into making a Servant, from the command seals, to the lengths servants might go through to exist, to be the worst act of cruelty to ever be done to humanity's legendary heroes.
  • Hammerspace: Somehow managed to have a notepad on him when Olga Marie was explaining his job to him. In the middle of a burning Fuyuki.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: He feels personally responsible for Olga Marie's death despite the fact nobody suspected Lev of being a bomber.
  • Last-Name Basis: Due to Japanese social norms, he's so used to saying everyone's last names that being assured he can say the first name is foreign to him.
  • Logic Bomb: He has a hard time wrapping his head around some of the rules of magecraft and the inconsistency of servants due to the belief A Wizard Did It and All Myths Are True.
  • Mama's Boy: Izuku's closest relationship before coming to Chaldea was with his mother Inko. In fact, when he drunkenly admits he doesn't want to leave Chaldea, he can only think of his mom being the only reason he'd go home.
  • Motor Mouth: Can and will talk a mile a minute if told something that takes a lot of logic to understand.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Emiya tells him that he participated in a Grail War to find his past self, and either convince him to let go of his dream, or kill him if fail, Izuku gets so angry he yells at him being an idiot, surprising the Archer.
  • Unchosen One: He was just a last-minute extra and yet ended up surviving to be the hero of human history.

    Shielder - Mash Kyrielight
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mash_1.png
Servant of Shield

Izuku's first servant, and the only Demi-Servant, a human fused with a Servant. Born a Designer Baby, she is learning about humanity traveling with Izuku.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She becomes quite close to Izuku after he agrees to stay by her side when she was stuck under the debris during the sabotage of Chaldea, but even more so when he thinks she's already human for saving his life.
  • Covert Pervert: Mash is usually a balanced person around Izuku, but sometimes her mind can wander into, er, places. Most of the time, it's because someone else is acting as The Tease.
  • First Friend: She is Izuku's first friend upon coming to Chaldea.
  • Heroic BSoD: Shares some with Izuku, in special over Olga's death. However, she has some specific ones after she's informed that the Heroic Spirit inhabiting her body is Galahad in London, not helped by the Trauma Conga Line that happens later with Jack's death and Shakespeare's Mind Rape with First Folio. It's to the point that this even starts to affect Lord Chaldeas efficiency.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is quite protective of Izuku, and refuses to have anyone else as a master, not even Olga Marie.

    Fou

Little Beast of Chaldea

A small creature that seems part cat, part rabbit who bonds with Izuku and Mash. Given the name Fou for that is all it can say.

  • Bond Creatures: He starts following Izuku, sleeping in his curly hair.
  • Hypocritical Heatwarming: Fou chimes in as best he can about Artoria (Alter)'s predicament with Izuku and Mash during her interlude, but as she points out, everyone has secrets. Even the fact that he's Cath Palug.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: A very adorable rabbit-dog-thing that has a small bow on his neck.

Directors

    Olga Marie Animusphere
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goolga.png
Prestigious, Yet Doomed, Director Of Chaldea

The heir of the Animusphere family and director of Chaldea after her father's death. Despite being a very talented mage she had a weak constitution to be a master. Finds out too late that she has been Dead All Along.

  • Due to the Dead: Izuku never saw anyone die before, and seeing the absolute agony she was in leaves an impression on him.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She's an accomplished mage at a young age, but her inability to use a servant is a source of insecurity. Lev wastes no time breaking her before restarting her death.
  • Tsundere: Mash notes after the battle with Berserker that despite her choice of words not changing around him, she is showing concern for Izuku.

    Dr. Romani Archman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goroman.png
Good Doctor of Chaldea

The chief medical doctor of Chaldea who gets promoted to Acting Director due to the fact everyone above him is dead.

  • Fanboy: Izuku thinks that given how much he knows about Solomon, it must mean he's a fanboy like he is of All Might.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Izuku admits he doesn't really want to go home after getting drunk, Romani realizes that the poor kid's only positive influence has been his mother and the bullying he got has groomed him into a Child Soldier.
  • Totally Radical: When Marie is summoned, he suggests as a less formal greeting to be "Whassup." Izuku points out nobody says that anymore to his confusion.

Staff

    Dustin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duston_7.png
Chaldea Purge Survivor

One of the engineers responsible for maintenance at the base. Originally a cosmic rays physicist, he was hired by Marisbury to work on the Particle Accelerator and had worked at Chaldea for 15 years.

    Heinrich Alba
A mage sent by the Clocktower, who has been opposed to Izuku being the last master.
  • Allegorical Character: As Zhuge Liang/El Melloi II notes, he's every negative stereotype of a clocktower mage rolled into one person.
  • Control Freak: What really gets to him about Izuku is that most of the servants are deemed by him as "Useless." This naturally gets to Izuku.
  • Fantastic Racism: As a standard mage, he's an elitist who finds the Servants to be glorified familiars, even deriding Mash as a Demi-Servant.
  • Foil: He's the complete opposite of Izuku, being a veteran mage whose elitist mindset would make him a horrible master, while Izuku is just a kid who happens to be the world's greatest master.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He can't hide his contempt for Izuku for getting the greatest power in human history.
  • Hate Sink: He exists merely to oppose everything Izuku does.
  • Hypocrite: When Izuku stands up to him, he accuses him of being arrogant. And as a lot of this page shows, he's very arrogant.
  • I Could Of Been A Contender: Everything he does is because as a powerful mage it's an insult that a nobody like Izuku is the last master.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: What made so many people agree with him (At first) was that Izuku had a hard time controlling a number of the servants, but it devolves into showing what a Control Freak he is.
  • Original Character: Has no counterpart, but he is the son of Cornelius Alba.

    Melissa Shield
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/melissa_sheild.png
Chaldea Purge Survivor

A young recruit of Chaldea who worked in the control room. She's the daughter of All Might's friend David Shield.

  • Foil: Like Izuku she is quirkless and a fan of All Might, but where she's known him for years and he always supported her dreams, Izuku only met him briefly and he was told he couldn't be a hero. This gives him all kinds of anxiety over why his idol didn't believe in him.

    Sylvia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sylvia_3.png
Chaldea Purge Survivor

One of the workers in the control room. She was originally a student of the Clock Tower before being recruited.

  • Butt-Monkey: Any time there's a disruptive servant (Phantom, Caster Gilles, or Carmilla), she always has bad luck in being near them.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While she's not happy with the more destructive servants somehow always causing her trouble, she did not agree to Alba's plan to have him become the Last Master.

Heroic Spirits

Antagonists

    Lev Lainur Flauros
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/golev.png
Man of Flauros

The former right-hand man and mentor of Olga Marie who orchestrated the bombing of Chaldea for mysterious reasons.

  • Establishing Character Moment: He makes his debut as the villain by spelling out to Olga Marie the bomb was put under her and makes her feel the suffering of being burnt by the sun.
  • Hate Sink: Wastes no time being this by killing Izuku's new friend Olga Marie and subjecting him to Mind Rape.
  • Mind Rape: Traps Izuku in a slumber where he tortures the poor boy.
