After five years off the air, The Amazing Race Australia returned on a new network with a new host.

The spin-off would not have small shoes to fill with an unprecedented three consecutive acclaimed seasons preceding it. Unfortunately, this season more than crossed the barrier from Tough Act to Follow to inexcusably weak. The biggest failing of the season would be the new host. Beau Ryan clearly wanted to make himself the star of the show and would take any chance he could to show off for the camera, often detracting attention away from the competition. The editing style took an unprecedented and panned approach of using an editing style that made the show feel like a video journal for the host, and by consequence purple-editing every single team, despite the majority of the teams showing a lot of personality and gameplay potential. The tasks, while varied with no bias in skill-set, were almost entirely taken from other versions and were considerably easier than past seasons. It was the first Australian season to not circumnavigate the globe nor go to a country the US version would dare visit. The production crew made numerous mistakes throughout such as putting a U-Turn in the final 4, and planning a leg in Mongolia the same day Vladmir Putin visited. While this was already a glaring failure of understanding the Metagame, it also eliminated two of the fan favorite teams. Not all was terrible though in the season, however. The cast, if you can look past the editing, were well chosen and showed a lot of skill at the game. The route was actually quite ambitious in spite of its aforementioned failures, being more successful than some American versions (even omitting seasons like 8: Family Edition, 33, and 34). Lastly, the finale was actually good compared to the rest of the season with a winner that had a good underdog storyline.

Tim Sattler-Jones & Rod Sattler-Jones

Newlyweds from New South Wales, and the Australian edition's first same-sex couple. Winners of this version of the Race.

  • Camp Gay: Channeling their inner queens like Christina and Britney for dancing helped them leave the Leg 6 Detour in first place.
  • The Ditz: In the first episode, Tim didn't know what a dumpling was, later on he was surprised you could milk a goat.
  • Heroic Build: Both of them, as personal trainers.
  • I Work Alone: While they did accept an alliance offer from Sid & Ash, they became the least interested in forming alliances as the competition progressed, preferring to run their own race. They became amused when Tom & Tyler helped them in a roadblock on leg 7 as the weren't interested in allying with their strongest competitors.
They were (reluctantly) u-turned by vote from Tom & Tyler's alliance in leg 9, much to their annoyance. However, they smiled upon seeing the same alliance fall apart with another u-turn vote in the penultimate leg, commenting with:"We're not helping anyone!"
  • Love at First Sight: Tim's description of their meeting in their introductory package.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Especially for each other.
    Rod: Your butt looks good!
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: As expected of newlyweds. They often sat near on top of each other in post-leg interviews.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: In warmer countries they frequently sported plaid button-ups with cut-off dropped armholes.

Jasmin Onus & Jerome Cubillo

Deadly Duonote , and the Race's first native Australian team. From the Northern Territory, which they thought would come in handy...until an uncooperative dog called Elsa caused them to fall behind during the dog-training task and they came in second.

  • Bookend: Jasmin finished the first Roadblock and the final Roadblock.
  • Call It Karma: Their reasoning for U-Turning Sid & Ash in Leg 3 was for Sid & Ash's attempted misdirection back in Leg 1.
  • Down to the Last Play: The camel race to the Leg 5 Pit Stop ended with their feet hitting the mat a fraction of a second before Tom & Tyler, marking their first first-place finish and breaking Tom & Tyler's winning streak.
    • Comes into play again at the Leg 11 Pit Stop. When it looked like Tom & Tyler would be checking in time again... Jasmin & Jerome were first to cross with a minute to spare.
  • Friend to All Children: Their son was their big motivation. At the Leg 3 Roadblock, seeing Jasmin interact with a little girl who wandered into the restaurant inspired Jerome to pull through.
  • Prayer Pose: Jasmin preparing to jump out of the plane in the final leg.

Vivienne "Viv" Dinh & Joey Dinh

Mighty Siblings from Victoria. Due to using their grit, multilingualism and intellect to overcome disadvantages related to their height, they quickly became fan favourites. They gradually expanded their alliance with Tom & Tyler to other teams, successfully avoiding social conflict until the penultimate leg. They achieved strong placements at the start of the race, but narrowly avoided elimination in Mongolia (getting lost and swapping detours once) and in two of the Africa legs. In the final leg they gained an early lead with the dog-training and horse-taming challenges, but then fell behind in finding the final piece of the final puzzle to come third.

  • Always Second Best: Their early placements, coming second behind Tom & Tyler on the first three legs.
  • Asian and Nerdy: They excelled in almost all intellectual challenges in the race (including hand and eye coordination tasks like flying a drone for the first time).
  • Brother–Sister Team
  • Chekhov's Skill: Averted. While Joey spoke fluent Vietnamese, it didn't significantly help them in the Vietnam legs (particularly with a bad taxi in leg 4).
  • Determinator: Both of them due to a highly physical course that liked to occasionally work against their small statures, but especially Viv during the bucket-carrying.
  • Failed a Spot Check: They circled the Zaisan Memorial several times in Leg 5 because the clues were on a platform higher than their eye level.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Highly competitive, they were still on good terms with most teams throughout the race, and become the first members of Tom & Tyler's alliance group. They apologize profusely to the teams they vote to U-Turn later on.
  • Height Angst: While they weren't angsty about their height per se, they were very conscious of how it could hinder their performance on certain challenges. This was especially prevalent during the bucket-carrying, where Viv really struggled.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Joey especially, since he did quite a few of the more physical Roadblocks such as the dog-training/horse-taming.

Tom Wilkinson & Tyler Roos

Victorian Footy Mates who played AFL together for six years. The most dominant team of their season, Tom & Tyler used their physical prowess, mental sharpness and an alliance with other teams to tie the franchise's record of most legs won in a single race. Their skill and speed meant Tom & Tyler were unstoppable in nearly every leg of the race, using the extra time ahead to share some information with others. While their relationship and bonds with some of their fellow racers helped, their strength did not go unnoticed by the other teams. In the 11th leg they were vote U-Turned by the remaining 3 teams (including their allies), yet still completed their Ganesh statue within a minute of Jasmin and Jerome in Thailand, but ended up eliminated just before the final leg.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Tommy, by Beau.
  • Born Lucky: In Leg 3, the very first rice packet Tom opened contained the lucky coin he needed to complete the Roadblock (much to the chagrin of other competitors who were there for much longer). He didn't even realize until after the exclamation of:
    Mikayla: What the Hell!
    Tyler: (Looking confused) What?
Mikayla: (mimics Tyler in post interview) What is this? Is this a coin?
  • Complexity Addiction: Spent considerable extra time gold-leafing the idols in the penultimate leg, when other teams were able to submit less refined versions.
  • Friendly Rivalry: They formed alliances with competitor teams early, but always aimed to come first.
"We had a pretty good alliance with Viv & Joey, but we weren't about to go easy on them!"Tom and Tyler race their allies by boat to the second pit stop.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Having played AFL together for years, they were comfortable expressing physical affection with each other, from the Man Hug to The Glomp.
  • Letting the Air out of the Band: In Leg 4, triumphant horn music played as they found the right Buddha statue, only for Tom to tell Tyler he missed a letter in writing down the name with an Affectionate Gesture to the Head.
  • Loophole Abuse: Their was no rule about peering someone else's postcard to find the next challenge location in leg 1's observation challenge. Tom & Tyler copied Hayley & Mikayla's card in the first challenge and signalled to Viv & Joey to follow suit.
  • Record Needle Scratch: In Leg 4, when entering Bai Dinh Temple:
Tyler: [confessional] It definitely took our breath away so it was very nice for us to take a moment and take everything in.
[peaceful music screeches to a halt]
Tom: Can you hurry up? We're still in a race!
  • Shipper on Deck: Tom, for Tyler and Hayley. Helped explain why they gave the sisters the answer to the prayer wheel counting task.
  • Shocking Elimination: Winning almost every leg, their competitors saw them as "unbeatable" and took the chance to vote to uturn them on the penultimate leg (including members of their alliance). Tom & Tyler managed to just catch up with the others, but spending too long perfecting the decorations in the last challenge, allowed Jasmine & Jerome to check in a mere minute before them. Their elimination was so shocking, that most of the negative user reviews of the season were attributed to the event.
  • Sore Loser: While they do take being eliminated in stride, they initially call out Viv & Joey and Jasmin & Jerome for breaking their alliance, even though the two teams acknowledged they wouldn't have a chance to win had they not U-Turn Tom & Tyler due to being the biggest threat.
  • Strong and Skilled: A team with very few physical or mental weaknesses during the race.
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: Being alpha males and winning the first four legs established them as the team to beat.
  • Troll: Tom told Femi and Nick that Tyler's father was a sandal maker during a sandal-making challenge. (Tyler's father was actually an AFL player - something which the promotional material was all too happy to exploit.)
  • The Alliance: The founder of the main alliance in the season, which they gradually extend to more teams as the race progresses. Their strategy was to "be the nice guy" and help teams behind them to have their help reciprocated later on. This works in their favour since their strong placements mean they can do this most of the time. Unfortunately the alliance would fall apart with a U-Turn on the second last leg.

  • Unskilled, but Strong: Their initial strategy was to dominate physical challenges to make up for any shortcomings with mental ones. Averted, when it turns out that they perform well in intellectual challenges also.

Femi Ogunsiji & Nicholas "Nick" Evbuomwan

Nurses from New South Wales. A nice team who frequently got lost. They were eliminated in 5th after the sandal-making challenge caused them to fall behind.

  • Born Lucky: Despite running at the back of the pack for much of the race, they frequently narrowly avoided elimination.
  • Childhood Friends: Femi & Nick have known each other since they were five, and are now both nurses and co-workers in their personal training business.
  • Down to the Last Play: Even though Femi & Nick ended up going the wrong way at first on Leg 5, they ran back and were at one point fighting for first place alongside Jasmin & Jerome and Tom & Tyler. Right up until Femi tripped.
  • Friendly Rivalry: On good terms with other teams on the second half of the race, they're still highly competitive.
When voting to u-turn Tim & Rod they say they have nothing against them, they're just outside their circle.
  • Heroic Build: They run a personal training business.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: The reason why Judy & Therese feared "the tanks" catching up while rafting to the Leg 2 Pit Stop, only for Femi & Nick's lack of coordination to lose them time spinning out.
  • No Sense of Direction: Caused them to lose time toward their first-place position in Leg 5, being unable to read a compass.

Sidney "Sid" Pierucci & Ashley "Ash" Ruscoe

Influencers from Bondi, New South Wales. They became known for having manipulative tactics early on, having said in their pre-race and post-race interviews that they were willing to break the rules to win. Due to being somewhat error prone, they are portrayed more humorously than previous villains in the franchise. They were eliminated in 6th, after incurring a penalty for breaking the road speed limit.

  • Big Bad Wannabe: They saw themselves as the villains who would do anything to win, but with most of their moves being small, constantly arguing, and being very mistake prone made them more of an irritant than actual villains.
  • Butt-Monkey: Their wannabe villain + error prone antics result in them becoming this. See Plucky Comic Relief.
  • Call It Karma: How they described beating Hayley & Mikayla to the Leg 5 Pit Stop after the sisters stole their taxi earlier in the leg.
  • Carry the One: Took the most tries to count the fountains at the start of Leg 2 due to mistakes adding their numbers together.
  • Death by Irony: They were effectively eliminated from the Race...for speeding!
  • Did You Actually Believe...?: One of their reactions to being U-turned by Jasmine & Jerome for trying to send them the wrong way.
Ash: If they're gullible enough to believe us, than that's their problem!
    Sid: Totally!
  • Elimination Montage
  • Establishing Character Moment: Trying to misdirect teams leaving Namsan Tower and then stealing a dumpling from the nuns at the Detour quickly cemented them as the villains as early as Leg 1.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • In Leg 1, they initially missed the envelopes underneath the Seoul Millennium Time Capsule.
    • In Leg 3, they didn't see the path to the Pit Stop and ended up climbing to the summit.
  • Griefer: At the Leg 2 Detour, Sid tried to throw Amani off-balance on the ropes course.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: They were the one team to say in their pre and post race interviews they were willing to "lie and cheat" to get ahead. Ironically this didn't help them this much and did more to make several other teams distrust them and got them U-turned. Deliberately breaking a recurring race rule got them penalized for an hour (see Death By Irony/Karma Houdini Warranty).
  • Karma Houdini: In Leg 1, when Judy & Therese leave their table to get more dough, Sid steals one of their dumplings at Ash's (joking) suggestion, to seemingly no consequence.
Sid: We're going to hell, is all.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: In Leg 8, Sid & Ash initially finished in second place, yet were given a one hour penalty due to speeding. As a result, every other remaining team checked in, with Viv & Joey doing so in the last minute.
  • Read The Freaking Clue:
    • In Leg 1, they lost time walking down stairs leading away from the Namsan Tower despite the clue telling them to go into its observatory.
  • Moral Myopia: They complained about Hayley & Mikaylya accidentally taking their cab and merely receiving aid from Tom & Tyler despite asking for task solutions and deliberately hindering other teams on the race themselves. They also get angry at Jasmine & Jerome for not working with them in the intersection, despite believing that they had successfully sent them the wrong way in leg 1.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: In leg 3, they comically bicker and fail to row a boat with their feet. They decide to swap detours; with Sid jumping out and wading with the declaration that "we're not rowing back!". Only to find later that Jasmine and Jerome had U-turned them causing them to bicker more and stumble through the same task. Throughout this their coarse language is bleeped out and the locals laugh at the antics. When trying to navigate to the pitstop, they are the one team who take the road to the summit instead, with the camera man panning across the path they should have taken. It's only after they reach the summit that they ask a local who points out the location is back the way they came; letting out one last swear, they trek back down. In leg 7, they lose a narrow lead to Jasmine & Jerome by forgetting to unlock the car to retrieve their bags.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: In their first main sequence of airtime, these interviews played during their Read The Freaking Clue moment on a leg full of mistakes:
Sid: I think this Race is for us to lose, to be honest.
Ash: I mean, everything we do in our lives we are the best at.

Hayley Foruria & Mikayla Foruria

Sisters from Queensland. They were known for their upbeat attitudes and often speaking in sync or rhymes with each other. With their positivity, strength and skills in tasks and navigation, they quickly became fan favourites. They raced near the front of the pack in the first four legs, but hit bad luck in Mongolia. Along with Nick & Femi, they were unable to dig up a box from the sand dunes within the four-hour time limit. While the nurses' taxi was able to get around the traffic caused by Vladimir Putin's visit to Ulaanbaatar, the sisters were not so lucky. They arrived at the Leg 6 Pit Stop after Nick & Femi's 2-hour penalty for failing to complete the digging challenge had already expired, putting them out in 7th.

  • Action Girl: Growing up doing lots of physical outdoor activities, they were both right at home completing more physically oriented Detour options. They completed the cup-stacking Detour in Leg 1 on their first try.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: According to post-show interviews, they were unaware of Sid & Ash being angry at them for stealing the taxi in Leg 5, as Hayley & Mikayla had called for one at the same time.
  • Brainy Brunette: They were quite sharp at mental and coordination tasks. Being the first to find the correct postcard in the tower observation challenge, getting the speed cup stacking challenge on the first try, being one of the few teams to work out the water puppets puzzle in one session etc.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: Both of them grew up dancing, and Hayley represented Australia in Scottish dancing. It helped them breeze through the Leg 6 Detour. Averted with the sand dunes, as they said their experience building lots of sand castles as kids didn't help them find a box.
  • Crack Defeat: Despite the two hour penalty, they might've survived the leg to mistake-prone Femi & Nick if the show had bothered to research that Vladmir Putin was coming to Mongolia that day (causing a massive traffic jam) and schedule the leg around that, rather than causing a bigger delay to teams who couldn't beat the dune digging task.
  • Elimination Montage
  • Foreign Queasine: Mikayla did not enjoy all the dry green rice she had to eat on her 25th birthday at the Leg 3 Roadblock, nor the fermented horse milk in Leg 5.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Highly competitive, they were on good terms with most teams, besides Sid & Ash (after accidentally claiming their taxi when it parks on the other side of the road). When Adrienne acts aggressive towards other teams during the heat of leg 4, they smile with the response:
"That's alright, we'll still beat ya!" When offered an alliance by Tom & Tyler they respond with:"Oooh, big words :)! Stating that they consider their relationship more of a friendship than an alliance to commit to.
  • Genki Girl: Consistently optimistic and excited to visit every location.
  • Happy Birthday to You!: All the contestants sing this to Mikayla on her birthday on leg 3.
Though the rice eating, luck based task later showed the race could still be harsh.
  • Luck-Based Mission: A contributing factor to a couple of their low finishes, especially in their final leg. First with finding a lucky coin in a rice eating challenge in leg 3, later with the sand dune searching challenge in leg 6.
  • Moral Myopia: Right out of the Starting Line, they stole a taxi that seemingly pulled over for Tom & Tyler. Later, at Namsan Tower, they complained when Tom & Tyler and Viv & Joey skipped the elevator line and got ahead of them (after copying their choice of postcard shown in plain view). Averted when they seemingly forgave the other teams by the next challenge.
  • Obligatory Joking: Would often make light of challenges or stressful situations with this.
    • Calling out to Tom & Tyler on having only a narrow lead in the obstacle course in leg 2
    • With regards to the luck based eating challenge they mocked Tyler's absurd luck:
Mikayla: (mimics Tyler) What is this? Is this a coin?!
    • Before greeting the next team with:
Hayley: (Viv &) Joey, pull up a seat!
Mikayla: This is your worst nightmare!
    • On seeing that Chris & Adrienne hadn't done any presentation work to their bundles of incense markers in leg 4 as they rushed to see the judge:
Mikayla: See them in 5 minutes!
    • See Traffic Song.

  • Sibling Rivalry: Hayley's motivation to complete the Long Strides Detour after her little sister picked it up easily.
  • Sibling Team
  • Shocking Elimination: On Leg 6 in Mongolia, they are unable to find a clue box in the luck based sand searching challenge. This sets them back by 4 hours, on top of another 2 hour penalty for not getting a box with further delays from a bad traffic jam. Despite completing every other task in the leg well, the aforementioned delays from factors outside of their control are enough to see them eliminated. They still manage to stay positive at the end though.
  • Tempting Fate: On Leg 3, Mikayla took the Roadblock challenge in eating packages of Vietnamese rice, feeling that it's her lucky day due to this leg taking place on her birthday. It took her 23 rice packets for her to finally find the coin, compared to some teams who found it in after a few packets in comparison, especially with Tom finding his coin after opening just one.
  • This Means Warpaint: With the mud, jokingly, after the Leg 2 Detour.
  • Traffic Song: Stuck in traffic on their way to the Leg 6 Detour, they broke into an impromptu tune.

Chris Williams & Adrienne Clarke

Farmer and Firie, Adrienne was South Australia's first female firefighter. Despite some bickering, they generally hovered in the middle of the pack. Racing to the Leg 5 Pit Stop, their camel suddenly threw off Chris, and he suffered several broken ribs. They were thus unable to check-in and Beau met them at the medical evaluation ger to eliminate them in 8th.

  • Chekhov's Hobby: Their experience alpaca farming helped them finish the Leg 5 Detour faster than the other teams on their bus.
  • Cool Old Guy / Cool Old Lady: The oldest team this season.
  • Elimination Montage
  • Failed a Spot Check: At the incense Route Marker in Leg 4, Adrienne initially focused only on the weight of the bundles, missing the color orientation and presentation of the examples.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: On the way to the Leg 5 Pit Stop, the camel threw Chris to the ground, breaking a couple of his ribs and making them unable to check in at the Pit Stop.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Adrienne, going off on both her husband and the other teams at the incense Route Marker.
  • Hero of Another Story: Adrienne was the first female fire fighter in South Australia. Chris rescued his daughter from a great white shark and was due to receive a medal for bravery.
  • Happily Married: For 30 years together.
  • Out of Focus: They received less camera time than most other teams.
  • Shout-Out: "To infinity and beyond!" from Chris as Adrienne nailed the Flyboarding in Leg 1.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Chris, in the Leg 3 Roadblock.

Rowah Hassan & Amani Mawass

Mum and Daughter. After being non-eliminated on Leg 3, their time-consuming Speed Bump of making an extra bundle of incense had them playing catch-up at the Detour. While they kept in striking distance of the other teams, they were never quite able to overtake anyone, finishing in 9th.

  • The Determinator: Amani, who kept at the grueling Leg 3 rice Roadblock until she found a lucky coin. She received a smattering of applause from onlookers outside the restaurant and hugs and praise from Rowah.
  • Fatal Family Photo: Shown at the beginning of Leg 3. Subverted, as it was a non-elimination leg.
  • Out of Focus: They received less camera time than most other teams.
  • Parent-Child Team
  • You Go, Girl!: Explained as part of their introductory package. As proud Muslim women, they wanted to show that anyone can do what they put their minds to, regardless of gender or background.

Judy Bowe & Therese Mills

Nuns with Missionaries of God's Love Sisters. Despite having long odds at any longevity, their earnest self-deprecation and positive attitudes made them fan favorites. They arrived at the rafts among the rear pack in ninth place, only to be passed by Femi & Nick on the stairs before the Pit Stop, putting them out in 10th.

  • Cherubic Choir: Uplifting ethereal music played as Therese's drone ascended toward their second goal.
  • Divine Intervention: How they described their completing the drone soccer Detour in post-show interviews.
  • Down to the Last Play: Rafting down the Hantan River to the Leg 2 Pit Stop, they maintained their lead over Femi & Nick, only to get passed on the sprint up the stairs to the Goseokjeong Pavilion.
  • Dress Code: Collared white button-downs with cross pins and long skirts down to their ankles.
  • Elimination Montage
  • Expy: Of Season 1's Anne-Marie & Tracy, being a comic relief team of older women who finished 10th.
  • Jaw Drop / Squee: Their reaction to being told they were not the last team to check in during Leg 1.
  • Mid-Battle Tea Break: While other teams raced in and out of the DMZ, Judy & Therese spent some extra time praying after writing their prayer ribbon.
  • Nuns Are Funny: Several of their scenes came with humorous music.
  • Prayer Is a Last Resort: Their occasional response when stuck on a challenge.
  • Prayer Pose
  • Spit Take: In their taxi en route to the Flyboarding Roadblock:
Therese: You're going to be the flying nun.
Judy: Sort of like the first time I levitated.
Therese: [snorts water out her nose with laughter]
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Their confusion with the postcard in Leg 1 ended up saving them, as Alana & Niko looked at it and proceeded to go way off-course.
  • Walk on Water: Lampshaded by Judy.

Alana Pappas & Niko Pappas

Gen Z Siblings. After struggling to find a cab out of the Starting Line, they caught up with the pack at Namsan Tower's observation deck. However, instead of finding the flag below they peeked at a postcard of Lotte World Tower Judy & Therese were studying. Taking a taxi there sent them so far off the course that the Roadblock had closed by the time they corrected their error. They were sent straight to the pit stop without completing either the Roadblock or Detour, eliminating them first in 11th.

  • Brother–Sister Team
  • Epic Fail: Lampshaded by Nico, who said they were the first team in any edition of the Race not to complete a Roadblock or Detour. Discounting teams eliminated by a Starting Line challenge, he is correct. (See Tragic Mistake below.)
    • Further lampshaded in the pub quiz:
Which team spent the most time in a taxi in the first leg?
  • Failing a Taxi: Perhaps partly due to perceptions around their young age, they experience significant delays in hailing a cab.
  • Graceful Loser: They remained upbeat throughout elimination and were able to laugh at their mistakes.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: How they thought the others would perceive them, being the youngest team in the Australian franchise; at the time of filming, Alana was 21 and Niko was 19. However, Amani was actually younger than both of them at 18.
  • Tragic Mistake: Following an incorrect postcard being focussed on by another team, they proceed to go way off course. Navigating to the wrong location cost the pair several hours, long enough to fall to the last place.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: First team eliminated, the Amazing Race social media lampshades this with the exact same words.
At least they'd have a humorous story to share with the other teams when sequestered with them.
