The Amazing Race had always been a top rated show in Canada, and after years of fruitless pleading to CBS to allow Canadians to apply to be on the show, it was announced during Season 21 that Canadians would finally have their own version of the show. However, it was announced that the Canadian Race would not be around the world, but instead just a race around Canada. Added on to that, it was only going to include nine teams instead of eleven, and only last ten legs.

Tim Hague Sr. & Tim Hague Jr. (The Tims)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tim_tim_99.jpg

Father and son, and the first parent/child team in the franchise to win the Race. They struggled from the very beginning of the season, being one of only two teams who did not properly read the clue at the Butterfly Conservatory in the first leg, and were a very mistake-prone team, almost getting themselves eliminated twice if not for the Non-Elimination legs. Despite this, and several of the other teams not wanting them in the Race, they managed to stumble their way into the Final 3. In Toronto, they gained a huge lead in the Needle in a Haystack Caramilk Chocolate Bar search, looking like they were going to luck their way to a victory, only to lose their lead by wandering around the Toronto Zoo for an hour and a half. They hit the Final Roadblock in last, but thanks to the attentiveness of Tim Sr. in remembering the flowers worn by the Pit Stop Greeters during the season, they were able to pass the other teams and win the race.

  • Born Lucky: They were saved by two non-elimination legs. Then there was the chocolate bar challenge in the finale, which got the a lead of at least half an hour over the other teams, plus an extra bump for getting it done before rush hour, while the other teams got stuck in traffic. Finally, there was the other two teams struggling at the Final Exam Finale Roadblock.
  • Brutal Honesty: Their entire family apparently functions this way.
  • Character Shilling: Naturally, as happens with any reunion episode, the After the Race special spent its first segment talking up the Tims after an entire season of portraying them as a less than competent team.
  • Cutting the Knot: While everyone started shoveling coal directly into the cart during the Coal Detour, they saved a good amount of time by loading a wheelbarrow, and tipping that into the cart itself.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Tim Sr. solved the Final Roadblock in mere minutes while Cory and Celina took almost 40 minutes to figure it out. This with the Tims arriving much later than the other two teams and finishing before them.
  • Dark Horse Victory: During the first few legs of the race, they spent a lot of time at the back of the pack, constantly behind even Vanessa & Celina, not to mention being saved by two non-elimination legs. While they started to improve their performance, this was overshadowed by the multiple leg wins of Jet & Dave and Jody & Cory. In the final leg, Jody & Cory said that they were more worried about Vanessa & Celina. It even looked like the Tims were completely out of it when they were completely lost at the Toronto Zoo.
  • Fatal Family Photo: Subverted at the beginning of the sixth episode, they showed a picture of Tim Jr. with his wife. Though they would finish in last, they would be saved by a non-elimination.
  • Follow That Car: Both Jet & Dave and Jody & Cory complained about them doing this when navigating.
  • Genre Blindness: At the Toronto Zoo, the Pandas were indeed the biggest attraction there (they were on loan from China) with signs plastered all over the Zoo advertising them. Jody & Cory and Vanessa & Celina were able to figure this out and got the clue within minutes of arriving at the Zoo. The Tims initially looked at the entrance to the Panda exhibit but didn't go in. They ended up wandering the zoo for almost 90 minutes when they finally went back to the Pandas and saw the cluebox there.
  • The Glomp: Tim Jr. did this to his dad after he completed the Country Line Dancing Roadblock.
  • Informed Ability: At the beginning of the fourth leg, Jet & Dave said they were not happy to see the Tims get non-eliminated, as they were "heavy competition." This is despite the Tims having yet to finish above 6th, or even managing to beat the bumbling Vanessa & Celina in a single leg.
  • Inspirationally Disadvantaged: Tim Sr. was in the early stages of Parkinson's, however it rarely came up over the course of the season, only really being discussed in the reunion.
  • Miracle Rally: In the finale, they went from way ahead (thanks to the chocolate challenge) to way behind (the zoo) to pulling a miraculous comeback at the second Roadblock to win.
  • Mondegreen Gag: During the ice sculpture Detour, Holly & Brett ran by them, having completed the other side of the Detour. Brett yelled back at them that, "The boys (Jody & Cory) aren't far." The Tims heard this as, "The clue's not far." After receiving their clue telling them to go to the University of Quebec, and getting correct directions, they rejected the directions because it was 20 minutes away. They wasted an hour looking for the university, and when they found out the first woman had been telling them the truth, they thought Brett had intentionally done it to mislead them.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: When Vanessa was missing one ingredient for her crepes, she used Politeness Judo and got Tim Jr. to tell her what it was allowing her to pass him up and dooming the Tims to last place and a non-elimination penalty.
  • No Sense of Direction:
    • They wasted lots of time looking for their costume pieces in the dragon dancing Detour before finally deciding to switch Detours.
    • They almost got themselves eliminated in Alberta due to Tim Jr. swearing he knew where the Pit Stop was, and leading them around in circles, allowing Brett & Holly to pass them. The non-elimination leg saved them.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: Tim Jr., when talking about being non-eliminated by Jon for the second time, said that it was crazy, and he did not think that had ever happened. Either it was this trope, as that was only the second non-elimination in The Amazing Race Canada history, or else he's counting the U.S. version, in which case he's horribly wrong, as it's happened seven times (or eleven if you want to count the non-eliminations in the Final 3 from the early seasons).
  • Read the Freaking Clue: At the Butterfly Conservatory in the first leg, only Tim Jr. grabbed his clue, Tim Sr. did not, resulting in a 30 minute penalty that dropped them from 5th to 6th.
  • The Scrappy: Both Jet & Dave and Jody & Cory said multiple times that they didn't think the Tims should still be in the game after surviving due to two non-elimination legs, and both thought the Tims spent too much time following other teams. Add in their early feuding with Vanessa & Celina, and their U-Turn directly eliminating fan favorites Hal & Joanne, and they were not popular with the other teams.
    • This extended to post-Race. Jet & Dave, during exit interviews, talked about how they had gained a huge amount of respect for Vanessa & Celina in how they had handled themselves over the course of the seasonnote , but that they thought Tim & Tim should have been eliminated long before the Final 3.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Vanessa & Celina for the first half, in part because their inability to beat them in the first four legs, despite viewing them as an inferior team.
  • Stubborn Mule: Their Newfoundland dog would move for Tim Sr. during the delivery Detour. Tim Jr. took over leading the dog and it couldn't move fast enough.
  • Underdogs Never Lose

Jody Mitic & Cory Mitic
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jody_corey_8950.jpg

Former Army sniper and his brother, Jody lost both his legs while on duty in Afghanistan. They remained in the background for first half of the season both airtime-wise and gameplay-wise, but stepped into the limelight by winning leg 7, and then the two following legs, and were the favorites heading into the finale as the were the only team remaining to have previously won a leg. After trailing for most of the final leg, they arrived at the Final Roadblock minutes after Vanessa & Celina. However, Cory struggled to remember the flowers, allowing Tim Sr. to pass him, leaving the brothers in 2nd place.

  • Artificial Limbs: Both legs for Jody. It would cause issues during the trestle and Line Dancing Roadblocks, not to mention running long distances.
  • Born Lucky: Leg 4 appeared to be a Foregone Conclusion that they would be eliminated when flying to Yukon in last with two teams with Express Passes. They were only saved when Kristen & Darren did not use theirs on the Detour and eliminated instead (choosing a longer detour doesn't help either). In the next leg, they got stuck at the needle-in-a-haystack lentil challenge the longest and were spared by two other teams quitting the challenge.
  • Brain Freeze: Jody got this from whale blubber.
  • Brick Joke: During the crepe Roadblock, Jody bragged to Jet about Cory's cooking abilities, which elicited a Take That! from Jet. Later, when Cory was doing the scarecrow Roadblock, Dave asked Jody about Cory's scarecrow making abilities, to which Jody said he had finished third in his scarecrow making class.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: When asked to use binoculars from the top of a crane to find the second Pit Stop, former Army sniper Jody almost immediately spotted the flags.
    • Subverted in the Yukon with the Hatchet Throwing part of the Klondike detour, while Jody did have good aim, he could not make the hatchet bury itself in the wood when throwing it.
  • Elimination Montage
  • Failed a Spot Check: At Yellowknife, when the teams were signing themselves up for flights to the Yukon, they inadvertently signed themselves up for the third flight, despite getting there before Hal & Joanne. This put them at risk of elimination when the two other teams on the flight each had an Express Pass.
  • Hope Spot: In the finale, they thought they had long since lost the race thanks to the Tims lucking out at the chocolate challenge. They were ecstatic to see the Tims show up at the flag and flower matching Roadblock, learning they were still in the game, only to see the Tims blow by them in a matter of minutes.
  • I Can't Dance: Jody, due to his prosthetic legs.
  • Inspirationally Disadvantaged: Jody lost both his legs below the knee when he stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan.
  • Loophole Abuse: The Roadblock in St. John's required participating contestants to perform as Street Buskers to raise money using provided entertaining implements. Jody simply told his story on how he lost his legs and was the second to complete the task. The tambourine he was holding saw essentially no use at all.
  • Manly Tears: Jody, after winning the leg in St. John's broke down after getting to chat with his family as part of the leg prize.
  • Out of Focus: Other than scenes about Jody's legs and their close call in the Yukon, they barely had any airtime for the first six episodes. They finally got some airtime once they started winning legs.
  • Read the Freaking Clue:
    • Cory jumped out of the ice pool in Yukon without grabbing his clue as instructed. He had to jump back in to the pool again to retrieve it.
    • At the crepe Roadblock, Cory did not read that he had to present all four crepes at the same time, and therefore his crepes were rejected multiple times.
  • Reality Show Genre Blindness: They did not think of having their cabbie wait for them at the Toronto Zoo and came to regret it when Vanessa & Celina jumped into theirs.
  • Sibling Team
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Cory, at the crepe Roadblock, was confident in his ability to make crepes. However, as he failed to Read the Freaking Clue, he failed at the task several times.
  • You Know I'm Black, Right?: During the speed skating Roadblock, Cory started complaining about how it hurt to walk in the speed skates, which got him a scathing retort from Jody.

Vanessa Morgan & Celina Mziray
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vanessa_celina_7525.jpg

Sisters, Vanessa is an actress best known for playing the title character in the Disney Channel series My Babysitter's a Vampire. They were initially portrayed as a weak team, with most teams considering them to be fodder, and they played this to their advantage. They received the second Express Pass from Kristen & Darren, and formed an alliance with Jet & Dave on the basis that they would be easy to beat in the finale. They were able to survive through a combination of skill and luck, not to mention tenacity and an ability to come up with ways to overcome their physical limitations. Twice they managed to get slim leads in the final leg, and went into the Final Roadblock 1st. However, Celina struggled to match the flowers to their flags, dropping them to 3rd place.

  • Claustrophobia: Vanessa.
  • The Ditz: One of the reasons Kristen & Darren gave them the other Express Pass.
  • Driving Stick: Which almost got them eliminated in leg 8, if not for the double leg non-elimination.
  • Dumb Struck: After they arrived last in leg 8, expecting to be eliminated, only for Jon to pull out their next clue.
Jon: Well, it's not over yet. Here's your next clue.
    Celina: ...
    Vanessa: ...
Jon: You girls are in this race, you better get going.
    *Cue Celebration*
  • Failed a Spot Check: They walked right by the signup sheet for the charter flights in Yellowknife.
  • Lethal Chef: Jet & Dave mocked Vanessa's crepe making abilities as she butchered her first attempts at the Roadblock.
  • Lipstick Mark: Vanessa applied lipstick before kissing the cod so she would leave one of these.
  • Long-Runner Tech Marches On: They got their first lead in the finale by asking the first person they saw to look up the address for the Cadbury chocolate factory on his phone, while Jody & Cory and the Tims wasted time by going to a hotel.
  • Ms. Fanservice: This allowed Celina to blow by the other contestants at the Roadblock in St. John's, simply by using a ribbon and hula hoop to get large donations from passing males.
  • Mythology Gag/Foreshadowing: While struggling with the coal Detour, Vanessa kept asking if they should use the Express Pass, as she did not want to be that team that was eliminated with an Express Pass. Also counts as Foreshadowing, considering what happened with Kristen & Darren in the next leg.
  • No Sense of Direction: They admittedly had no sense of direction, with Vanessa getting visibly confused anytime she looked at a map.
  • Photographic Memory: They said Vanessa had one, which came from memorizing lines for roles. This did not help them in the finale, as Celina wound up with the memory roadblock.
  • Politeness Judo:
    • Facing a long line at the Calgary airport, they were able to jump the line (and Jet & Dave) by asking the guys at the front of the line if they could jump in front of them.
    • When fighting to avoid last against Tim Jr. at the crepe Roadblock, Vanessa was just missing one ingredient, so she went up to Tim Jr. and politely asked him what "cerise" was. Without thinking, Tim answered "cherries," all but guaranteeing their last place finish.
  • Reality Show Genre Blindness
    • They did not think to try to get standby tickets on the first flight to Vancouver. Hal & Joanne, who were working next to them, got standby tickets, and they missed the flight. They learned their lesson, however, as in the next leg they rushed to upgrade their tickets to the first flight at the Vancouver airport, giving them an hour bump.
    • In Halifax, after receiving a commemorative dime as their next clue, they did not realize that clues involving currency usually mean to look for a particular landmark depicted on the currency itself (in this case, the Bluenose II).
  • Sex Sells: After having trouble with the storytelling Detour in the penultimate leg and dropping them to last, Celina was able to jump them all the way to first by passing all the other teams during the busker Roadblock.
    Vanessa: Push the boobs out.
  • Sibling Team
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With the Tims, thanks to a number of unfriendly interactions between them in the first few legs.
  • This Is A Race: How Vanessa justified their jumping the line at the Calgary airport at the reunion episode, when five of the nine teams called it an "offside move."note
  • Unwitting Pawn: Subverted. Both Kristen & Darren and Jet & Dave saw them as a weak team they could help further into the game, then easily beat later on. It backfired on Kristen & Darren, as the sisters having the Express Pass was one of the biggest reasons for their elimination. Jet & Dave would later suffer the same fate as Celina blew past them on the busker Roadblock, despite her and Vanessa being the last to arrive there.
  • Weak, but Skilled
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: They both had to face their fears during the first leg Roadblocks Vanessa's claustrophobia (with the diving helmet) and Celina's fear of heights.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: They knew the other teams saw them as weak, so they made an alliance with Jet & Dave to hit Jody & Cory with the second Double U-Turn, knowing Jet & Dave would want to do it to keep them in the Race. This ended up being for naught, as they were the last two teams to hit the U-Turn mat. Overall, this could be considered their strategy for the entire season.

Jet Black & Dave Schram
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jet_dave_7330.jpg

Friends and national champions in bodybuilding and cheerleading (respectively). Despite being the obvious Alpha Male team coming in, this quickly became overshadowed by the fact that they were goofy... very goofy. Their antics quickly became the most entertaining part of the season, while at the same time not hindering their racing ability at all, as they even won three legs in a row at one point. Despite being on the second shuttle into St. John's, they got a cab driver who was only on her fourth day on the job, which lost them their lead on the trailing teams, and then Dave struggled with the busker Roadblock, putting them out in 4th place. Their popularity led them to be brought back for The Amazing Race Canada 7

  • Accidental Truth: They thought Vanessa & Celina would be the ones to fall for their fake cannon clue at the Port of Quebec. When the port opened in the morning, the girls found their clue in a cannon.
  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign: In Quebec, Jet said, "bueno," to their cab driver.
  • "Balls" Gag: The fourth episode Title Quote came from them on the blindfolded wheelbarrow obstacle course, when they had a little too much fun talking about "grabbing nuggets."
  • Comical Overreacting: The entirety of the lobster Detour for them.
  • Cool People Rebel Against Authority: Jet had an issue with authority, and got lectured by the RCMP task judge for the sarcastic way he said, "sir."
  • Death Glare: The judge at the Country Line Dancing Roadblock gave Dave one when Dave called him Anderson Cooper.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Most of what they say is dripping with sarcasm.
  • Don't Look Down: Dave yelled this to Jet during the trestle Roadblock in the first leg. Jet immediately looked down.
  • Dreadful Musician: Despite being a musician, Dave couldn't figure out what to do during the busker Roadblock and ended up singing "Row Row Row Your Boat" in a horrible offbeat tune.note
  • Dumb Muscle
Jet: What does exterior mean in Alberta?
    • Later on, during the Coal detour, they lampshaded this when they finally realized their tags were in the wrong place. They even told Vanessa & Celina to check their tags (they were in the right place) prompting this remark:
Dave: They got theirs on. They're smart, we're dumb.
  • Elimination Montage
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • They had trouble finding their clue at the dance hall in Calgary, despite standing feet from it.
    • Jet took two hours on the scarecrow Roadblock when he was not able to find the arms and breasts for his scarecrow.
  • Failing a Taxi: It took them forever to catch a cab outside the Richmond Olympic Oval, made all the worse by Kristen & Darren running out and catching a cab right away in front of them.
  • Fanboy: Jet was starstruck when he met Hal & Joanne, crediting them with his current physique.
  • Foreshadowing: Jon Montgomery told them at the end of leg 9 that he doubts this is the last the show has seen of them.
  • Fratbro
  • The Glomp: They did this to each other after completing several tasks. When Dave finished the Country Line Dancing Roadblock, they both glomped one of the female dancers, then each other, then Dave glomped the task judge.
  • Griefer: Upon reaching the overnight equalizer at the Port of Quebec, as a joke they wrote a fake clue in a small tabletop rock garden that happened to be near their sleeping bags. When Jody & Cory and Holly & Brett arrived, they naturally started looking around to see if there was anything Jet & Dave had missed, and Jody found the fake clue. He immediately yelled at Cory and when running out to check the cannons. This led to Jody & Cory and Holly & Brett running around yelling about the cannons while Jet & Dave chased after them, laughing the entire time, until they fessed up and apologized.
  • Informed Ability: They made a huge deal about their musical abilities entering the busker Roadblock, with the show even showing pictured of them playing with their bands. Dave goes out in the street and starts singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat... badly.
  • It's the Journey That Counts: Dave, during their Elimination Statement:
Dave: Winning is amazing, but I think the journey is important as well. Maybe I'm just saying that because I'm a loser, but that's what losers say, and now I know why.
  • Keet: Dave especially, but Jet has his moments too.
  • Large Ham
  • Manly Tears: Dave broke down during their elimination.
  • Motor Mouth: Both of them.
  • Mythology Gag: On their way to the sixth Pit Stop, Dave yelled, "We're coming, Jon." Which was Ian's Catchphrase in The Amazing Race 3.
  • My Hovercraft Is Full of Eels: When told to fly to Quebec, Dave started trying to say they would be the "champions" at the end of the season in French, but instead said they they wanted to be the "mushrooms" (champignons) at the end of the race.
  • Nice Guys Finish Last: Invoked at the beginning of the third episode, after barely avoiding elimination in the previous leg.
  • No Sense of Direction: They wasted hours looking for their costume pieces in the dragon dancing Detour, dropping them to the back of the pack.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Amusingly, they get more and more goofy as the season went on.
  • Read the Freaking Clue:
    • At the Butterfly Conservatory in the first leg, they failed to read the part of the clue that said that reaching into a terrarium with scarier animals would net a faster flight. They reached into the first terrarium they saw (butterflies), costing them a seat on the first flight.
    • They wasted time at the coal Detour piling on and taking coal off their cart, as they did not put their tag in the right place.
  • Reality Show Genre Blindness: Generally, when you get a cab driver who has no idea where she's going, you switch drivers as soon as possible, not hold onto her for the entire leg.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: The RCMP task judge chewed Jet out for his attitude.
  • Self-Deprecation: Usually around their Dumb Muscle moments.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns
  • Sleep Cute: Hilariously done during their flight to Regina, when the camera caught them as they fell asleep on each other's shoulders.
  • Sore Loser: Dave, self-described during their intro.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Deadpan Snarker? Check. Self-Deprecation? Check. Large Ham? Check. Motor Mouth? Check. Result - the most airtime amongst the contestants this season.
  • Take That!:
    • When talking about how Hal & Joanne had inspired him to get into shape, he said that without them he might now be a skinny little hippie, like Darren.
    • At the crepe Roadblock, when Jody told Jet that Cory was "almost a chef" and spoke French, Jet said that the race was tailor made for them, then wondered aloud why they didn't finish in the top 3 once in a while.
  • The Teetotaler: When one task had them take a shot of rum, they both said they never drink, which surprises people.
  • Tempting Fate: They all but declared themselves the winners during their intro.
Jet: He wouldn't be surprised if we win. I have no doubt we're gonna win.
  • Why Isn't It Attacking?: After struggling throughout the eighth leg, they expected to be U-Turned by one of the teams in front of them, seeing as how they were the only team who had won multiple legs at that point. When they hit the U-Turn mat to find themselves not U-Turned, they were confused, and called the other teams foolish for not using it on them.

Holly Agostino & Brett Burstein
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brett_holly_7905.jpg

Married Pediatricians. They were well aware that they were not a physically fit couple, but planned to use their brains to make up for this. While they got off to a strong start, they frequently ran into problems with physical tasks, as Holly would begin complaining whenever they came across something she did not feel she could do, oftentimes causing them more issues than the actual task was. Eventually, Detour switching did them in in Nunavut, as Brett wanted to stick to igloo building, while Holly kept insisting they switch to spear throwing. By the time they switched, they were already well in last place, and they were eliminated in 5th.

  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: After they completed the football Detour on the first try:
Brett: We just beat Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod at sports.
  • Broken Tears: Holly fell completely apart during the Country Line Dancing Roadblock in Alberta, the lentil task in Regina, and igloo building in Nunavut which led to her being a tearful mess for those legs.
  • Catchphrase: Brett's constant use of "Hol! Hol! Hol!" (which was eerily reminiscent of Brook's constant use of "Claire! Claire! Claire!" whenever their partner was slowing down). As a joke, during the reunion, Brett wore a shirt that said "Hol" many times over in fancy lettering.
  • I Can't Dance: Holly at the Country Line Dancing Roadblock.
  • I Gave My Word: Brett was insulted that Kristen & Darren did not think they would have handed over the Express Pass if their roles were reversed.
  • The Illegible: They brought up the old joke about doctors' handwriting during the Chinese Character Roadblock.
  • The Load: Holly, who fell apart anytime they started to struggle, forcing Brett to cajole her to keep going.
  • Mythology Gag: While staying overnight at Lake Okanagan, Brett proposed the same Express Pass Alliance that Idries & Jamil did during US Season 22. It worked out just as well, as though Brett & Holly finished 2nd, Kristen & Darren gave the Express Pass to Vanessa & Celina, as they were seemingly less of a threat, and they did not trust Brett & Holly.
  • No Social Skills: Apparently, people don't like Brett when they first meet him, not even his own wife.
  • The Perfectionist: Brett said that Holly hated failing at the Country Line Dancing Roadblock.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: They don't know how to cook because they're too busy being pediatricians.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Even they lampshaded this a lot of times, and it shows.

Hal Johnson & Joanne McLeod (BodyBreak)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hal_joanne_1103.jpg

Married Canadian fitness icons, they've been on TV for 25 years with their BodyBreak program. They started off strong, coming in the top 3 in the first four legs. However, despite some brilliant maneuvers to get on the first flight to Regina, they struggled with the Needle in a Haystack lentil task, choosing to quit the task and take a 2-hour penalty when they saw Brett & Holly do the same. Knowing they had to beat Brett & Holly to the Pit Stop to stay in the Race, they beat the doctors to the Double U-Turn mat by seconds, only to find they had already been U-Turned by the Tims. Despite using the U-Turn on Brett & Holly, the doctors were able to breeze through the football side of the Detour, and Hal & Joanne were eliminated in 6th.

  • Cool Old Guy and Cool Old Lady:they finished in the top 3 during the first four legs with a leg win in Alberta despite being significantly older than the rest of the teams.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: Averted. Joanne mentioned doing Country Line Dancing on their show once, but what she had to do for the Roadblock was so much more difficult, that it was not much help.
  • Fatal Family Photo: At the beginning of their final leg, they started talking about how they met and their relationship.
  • No Sense of Direction: They almost put themselves on the last flight to the Yukon (with two teams who held Express Passes) by being unable to find the airport, only to be saved from this almost certain elimination by Jody & Cory signing up in the wrong spot.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The other teams started getting paranoid when they disappeared at the Whitehorse airport. Naturally, they were on the phone, looking for a faster connecting flight to Regina.
  • Precision F-Strike: One of the more surprising comments for a fairly wholesome team:
Brett: Guys, good luck. We'll see you at the Pit Stop, okay?
    Joanne: *bleep* off.
  • This Is a Competition: When Jody & Cory realized their mistake in signing up for the third flight, they asked Hal & Joanne (who ended up taking the open spot on the second flight) if they would allow Jody & Cory to go ahead of them. Both of them gave this trope for their response.
  • Tall Poppy Syndrome: The Tims U-Turned them specifically because they had been so strong, and the Tims saw an opportunity to take them out.
  • Tempting Fate: Hal was confident that Brett & Holly would struggle after being U-turned as he thought that Holly wouldn't be able to catch a football.
  • Your Other Left: During the blindfolded wheelbarrow obstacle course, Joanne told Hal to turn right, then his other right.

Kristen Idiens & Darren Trapp
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kristen_darren_4364.jpg

Dating couple. They started off strong, winning the first leg and the Express Pass, and ran at the top of the pack for the first three legs. In the Northwest Territories, they got lost early looking for the Roadblock, putting them on the last flight to the Yukon. Even though they held the Express Pass, they decided to do the Detour anyway, as they had experience with paddling. However, Vanessa & Celina used their own Express Pass, and Jody & Cory were able to breeze through the other side of the Detour, causing them to be eliminated with the Express Pass in hand, becoming the second team in the franchise to do so.

  • Call It Karma: At the reunion, they said they their elimination was karmic retribution for breaking their deal with Brett & Holly and not giving them the Express Pass.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: Subverted. They thought that since they were kayak and raft guides, they'd be able to do the Raft Detour and not have to use their Express Pass. While they completed the task well enough, Jody & Cory did the Gold Rush side of the Detour faster.
  • Epic Fail: They were eliminated while holding an Express Pass.
  • Failed a Spot Check: After having had one Vancouver cab driver take them to the wrong location that day, they became upset when their cabdriver seemingly did not take them to DP World. Except he had, and they ran right by the container terminal.
  • Granola Girl/Guy: Their dream is to create their own self-sustaining ecovillage.
  • History Repeats: There are so many similarities between their run and that of Jessica & John:
    • Both seasons had someone propose an "Express Pass Alliance" to them during the first leg. Then they both won the first leg and the double Express Passes and then second guessed the alliance.
    • They both gave away the second Express Pass on Leg 3 to a team who they thought was not a threat. Leg 3 was a non-elimination.
    • Both teams who received the second Express Pass greatly used them to benefit, resulting in the original teams being Hoisted by their own Petard:
      • Dave & Connor used the Express Pass to win Legs 3 and 4. Had they not won those legs, they could have withdrawn from the competition earlier, possibly saving Jessica & John at the end of leg 4.
      • Vanessa & Celina used the Express Pass when they, Kristen & Darren, and Jody & Cory were on the last flight on Leg 4, thus increasing the possibility that Kristen & Darren would be eliminated.
    • They were both eliminated in Leg 4 when they did not consider the use of their own Express Pass at the Detour when they were scrambling to avoid last.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: They gave the second Express Pass to Vanessa & Celina because they thought they weren't a threat, only one leg later they found themselves in a three way tie for last with the sisters, and the girls used the Express Pass to skip a Detour that would have hugely favored Kristen & Darren.
  • No Sense of Direction: They got lost in Yellowknife, dooming themselves to be on the third flight to Yukon.
  • Reality Show Genre Blindness: Once again, they got eliminated while holding an Express Pass. Vanessa & Celina did not hesitate to use theirs as soon as there was any hint of them being eliminated, while Kristen & Darren thought it was a good idea to risk elimination for the chance to still have their Express Pass for later. They claim this was deliberate as they didn't want to miss out on any of the challenges and thus would have not used the pass regardless.

Jamie Cumberland & Pierre Cadieux

Best friends and gay cowboys who met through the Alberta Rockies Gay Rodeo Association fundraiser dance. After barely surviving the first leg, they missed both of the first two flights out of Kelowna, putting them hours behind the other teams. Further struggles with the Chinese Character Detour ensured their elimination in 8th.

  • The Charmer: They liked to see themselves as this.
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: They survived the first leg after Treena & Tennille were given a penalty for failing to grab both clues at the Butterfly Conservatory.
  • Fatal Family Photo: They actually showed pictured of Jaime with his deceased partner at the beginning of their elimination episode.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Their inability to draw money out of a bank machine delayed them and kept them from getting on the second flight with the rest of the trailing teams. Though they claim this was Manipulative Editing as they were already starting far behind the other teams anyway.
  • Just Friends
  • No Sense of Direction: They struggled to find the Roadblock location on Lake Okanagan, letting the teams behind them catch up.
  • The Perfectionist: They actually had a chance to catch up as Tim Sr. & Tim Jr. and Jet & Dave struggled with navigating the dragon dancing Detour, but they wasted lots of time drawing their characters over and over, only to get it wrong anyway, then switched Detours. All this wasted time guaranteed the elimination.
  • Tempting Fate: Jamie said he already planned on how he'd throw his hat in the air when they won, fast-forward to the end of episode 1, they would have been eliminated first had the twins not incurred a penalty, and that reprieve was short lived, as they were eliminated without ever seeing another team in the second episode.

Treena Ley & Tennille Dorrington

Twin sisters. In the first leg, they had navigation issues at Lake Okanagan, putting them behind the other teams. Even though they would recover enough to beat Jamie & Pierre in a footrace to the Pit Stop, they would be eliminated anyway after receiving a 30 minute penalty, as they made the most basic mistake a team can, failure to read the clue.

  • Down to the Last Play: Subverted. They hit the mat just seconds in front of Jamie & Pierre, looking like they had barely survived the leg. However, with the 30 minute penalty, their elimination was guaranteed whichever team hit the mat first.
  • Hope Spot: When they hit the mat before Jamie & Pierre, only to have the penalty dropped on them.
  • No Sense of Direction: They got lost twice at Lake Okanagan, first when looking for the Lakefront Water Sports Kiosk, then again when looking for the Roadblock location, putting them in last.
  • Oh, Crap!: On the mat, when Jon said, "However, Treena & Tennille..." you could see Treena start to lose it. Tennille held it together better.
  • Read the Freaking Clue: At the Butterfly Conservatory, only Tennille grabbed her clue, earning them a 30 minute penalty that eliminated them. They also failed to read the part of the clue that said that scarier animals would net a faster flight, and reached into the first terrarium they saw, putting them on the second flight.
