    Ella Andersen

Ultimate Archivist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/44614766_qeb0qle8f4fbu12.png
And her little robot friend, Robeep.
Sweet, positive, and eager are a few traits that Ella displays from the get-go, though it is easy to see that she has naivety under her belt, too. As the Ultimate Archivist known to travel plenty, she has the world documented at her fingertips, the attention to detail in each log enough to make readers feel like they were there. She plays a key figure in the factual side of things, ensuring she always gets the right information from everyone to fill out her log neatly, be it during the investigations or on trial.

Though with a personality like her own, it is rather easy to break her heart — and unfortunately from her time on the Aurora, Ella has felt it done time and time again. After Nathaniel revealed his ugly side through the killing of Milli, she has been unable to do anything but grieve who he was. She tries to be positive, just as she always has been, though when times get bleak even the sun can dim. With Ezekiel and Rain supporting her as she goes, Ella has made it far despite all of her past troubles.

  • Affectionate Nickname: “Little Miss” to Rain.
  • Break the Cutie: Throughout the killing game, Ella has tried to keep up a positive demeanor and make friends in the dread that would ensue. It worked for a long while, though once she found her friends dead or the killer in question, she had begun to break. After Nathaniel’s reveal, Ella learns to Beware the Nice Ones and keeps her distance from the rest of the cast, afraid he might hurt people on her behalf again. She spends the majority of her time in Chapter 4 crying.
  • Cute Machines: Has a little robot friend named Robeep on her head. Isn’t he precious?
  • Commonality Connection: With Ezekiel. After the two have a moment alone together, they then ironically realize that they are both alone on the inside. But hey, now that they have each other, they're less alone, right?
  • Friendless Background: Ella has always had little permanent friends, which makes her desperate for them within The Aurora’s crew, which backfires on her. In hand with I Just Want to Have Friends.
  • Happily Adopted: Although the circumstances surrounding Ella's Uncle Oliver adopting her aren't great, she loves him dearly and is grateful to him for everything he has done.
  • Lonely Together: With Nathaniel. Both of them got closer after the Chapter 2 trial by admitting their trials and tribulations with friendship in the past. For… better or for worse, Ella would come to know.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Subverted. Ella feels guilt for things she is not the cause of, such as Nathaniel’s murder and subsequent death.
    • Also subverted in her backstory. Ella did not kill her mother despite the guilt she has for such a thing. Of course, her actions did not help her, but Ella did not stab her. She removed the knife, she didn't stick it in in the first place.
  • Think Happy Thoughts: Ella focuses on only making good memories to have something to look back on and smile at. It… kinda helps with the killing game, right? Right?
    Momoko Shinohana

Ultimate Gardener

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/55638452_ptvieipjh6vxfop.png
He loves me, he loves me not~!
Always, Momo seemed to have something under her sweet smile — and always, when asked what had gotten under her skin, she would respond with the same sweet smile. Throughout her time on the Aurora, she was able to come close with some but truly cut her ties with others, who believed her to be a stubborn liar. Though, Momo always kept her cool, just as she had her entire life, adjusting and readjusting to be the woman she had thought she ought to be.

Always setting off peoples’ alarms that she truly isn’t who she said she was, Momo would come to let the mask slip during Chapter 3. Then people had worried the most, as her office unlocked some unnerving things, though due to the isolation motive at hand and her rejection of helping hands, there was nothing to be done. To end the motive and return home again to her daughter, Himawari, Momo killed Coella Lusine and was promptly executed at the end of her trial.

  • Caring Gardener: As the Ultimate Gardener, Momo nurtures plants with great care, known for her family’s famous garden that she is currently in charge of. She has an unfound passion for gardening much like the women in her family, who all seem to carry a “gift” of being able to make flowers to illuminate their emotions.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Momo’s hair reaches down to her ankles. She said she never cut it to please her ex-husband.
  • Stepford Smiler: Momo spends the majority of the killing game locking away her problems behind a smile, often pushing people away to keep their view of her pristine. At the end of her trial, she remarks in a message to her ex-husband about how she grew her hair out like [he] wanted me to, and wore lighter colors that he liked. She also remarks how she would hide her jealousy behind a smile and keep her cool to pretend everything was perfect.
  • Unrequited Love Lasts Forever: Momo is determined to find love in a caring husband for her, and a loving father for her daughter, Himawari. Her ex-husband, Rin, is someone she says to never have loved in her last message to him, and is taunted by Plum for leaving him a message rather than Himawari. Even aboard the Aurora Momo’s search for love is unable to be put down, as a note on her computer in the horticulture office reads about her pining for Varun.
    • Though, this can be lightly subverted as Momo reveals that she doesn’t quite understand what love is meant to feel like and that she has never really loved anyone. Not Rin, and likely not Varun either.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Subverted. Momo strives to be a traditional Japanese woman “in her prime” for her ex-husband, keeping herself composed at every angle to keep this mask up. Her maturity, kindness, and doormat personality that shoved concern away was something she used to be more like that ideal, though in the end could not handle it as she seemed. In the end, there were people she both truly despised and truly envied, the truth under her aloof ruse.
    Kohaku Aikawa

Ultimate Astronomer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kohaku_8.png
Run, rabbit, run!
In the beginning, Kohaku only held back; always, he was offering his neck for others to take, one life in exchange for the seventeen others fighting against the neurotoxin. Always, he had been willing to die for the other Voyagers, and it wasn’t until the end of Fisnik’s execution did he purposely step out of his ways. He approached Milli first and that was what should have been the end — though, relying on one another can never stay happy for too long. No, not aboard the Aurora.

It is when Milli dies at the hand of their friend does Kohaku’s quiet melancholy become quiet anger. Always, he had just wanted someone to reach out, to be there for him and them, but no one did. And when he learns of his mother’s death he is stunned; it is her continued love for him through his abandonment that makes him sink further into his recline. He drinks, he mourns, and he angers — Kelly Wei walks in on this grief and, in turn, Kohaku strangles him. Hatred for the remaining Voyagers boiled him over, and it is when he is discovered as the killer that he cannot hold back any longer. The only one who can see through blind resentment is Minerva, his only friend left, who walks him to his execution.

  • Berserker Tears: Though he was already sobbing before, Kohaku rushes Kelly and kills him in a blind rage while crying.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: At first, Kohaku was known for his meek, kind personality, and fragility though holding a heart that truly cared for others. Multiple times he had shown his self-sacrificial nature (and suicidality) by offering himself up to various people to kill him in exchange for ending the motive. During this time he made many friends, though none sized up to Milli, his closest friend and someone he clung to during his time on The Aurora. Though it took Milli’s death taken in complete vain, and everyone busy mourning others (and fussing over their still living killer, Nathaniel), for him to snap. Kohaku, crazed by no one checking up on him besides Minerva and no one noticing his descent, murders Kelly when he walks in on him bringing flowers for Milli, rushing him with tears in his eyes. His behavior went from meek to snappy, distant, and hateful.
    • Though, it could be said that Kohaku’s time as The Cutie was never present on The Aurora. After suffering at the hands of his abusive ex-boyfriend and possible The Corrupter, Adrien, Kohaku murdered him in the same manner he killed Kelly.
  • Death Seeker: Eventually subverted. Early on, Kohaku would offer himself up as a victim in order to end the motives. He even asked Minerva if a suicide would end the Neurotoxins.
  • First Friend: Before she leads him to his execution, Kohaku remarks that Minerva was his first true friend aboard The Aurora. Minerva smiles and returns his comment, saying he was hers as well.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Subverted. Kohaku spent a long time begging others to kill him willingly to end the first motive, hoping to die to not have to suffer in the killing game any longer. Though, when Kohaku killed himself during a motive that required a killing sacrifice more than anything else (ironically the motive where someone was sacrificed from the group once a day), he killed in vain, aiming to kill everyone in revenge.
  • Teach Him Anger: Kohaku’s shy and kind exterior gets overwritten by his rage and hatred for everyone else in the cast. He uses his grief for Milli and everyone else’s seeming lack thereof to kick him into killing someone.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Kohaku says it himself in Chapter 4's meeting. While he wanted to win and kill the rest of the Voyagers, he ultimately confessed as they were getting close to figuring him out and he had no desire to fight for his life when prompted.
Kohaku: "I won't fight for something like that. I'm not afraid to die."
    Danica Grishina

Ultimate Navigator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/58879554_833epm2zplvestc.png
What do you do with a drunken sailor?
Level-headed and charismatic, Danica adjusted well to her life on the ship and working with a team, as it is the only thing she had ever known. Gaining her talent as the Ultimate Navigator came with not only these traits, but the means to perform well under pressure as well. Throughout her time aboard the Aurora, Danica was a reassuring presence to the rest of the crew with a knack for keeping spirits on board.

It was only when the neurotoxins were spread throughout the ship did she know what she had to do. They were all given four days, and in these four days, no action was ever taken. Knowing what she had to do, Danica kills with less than a day left — and it is when she is close to cornered does she relent. She gives herself to them as a sacrifice and is mourned as such, despite her killing of Blythe. Someone had to do it, they all knew but didn’t say, and it was Danica taking charge who finally admitted it.

  • Action Girl: Danica is tall, strong, and can dish out hits like nobody’s business. Among the cast, she was the most knowledgeable on fighting and self-defense. And, of course, she’s a rather attractive woman.
  • The Captain: Danica is the Ultimate Navigator and a badass one at that. She spent the majority of her life aboard the Strannik, and even more so traveling the world as a whole.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Along with her combat knowledge, Danica is made extra lethal when she is stripped of her willingness to follow fighting morals. This could be displayed when she took down Blythe, using her staggering height advantage, muscles, and even a glass shard to accomplish the murder.
  • Commanding Coolness: Even apart from her Ultimate Navigator status, Danica has many accomplishments from her life at sea including (though not limited to) the Canadian Medal of Bravery. Yeah, she’s pretty cool.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: As the days went on, the neurotoxins were going to grow more and more fatal. It took when the crew had less than twenty-four hours left for Danica to kill, strictly doing so not to escape but to let the others have longer to live. In the end, she even claims that It Has Been an Honor.
  • Not So Stoic: Despite also being The Stoic, Danica shows a break in her tough appeal at her trial when revealing her true intentions. She even starts to break in her tone and show some tears, getting through to her core.
  • Precision F-Strike: Danica hardly cusses or uses harsh language which means it really hits when she does.
  • The Stoic: Danica keeps up strong-willed stoicism throughout her time on the Aurora. Hardly anything was able to truly shake her past anger - from her time on the Strannik, Danica knows how to keep her head in rough situations.
    Luna Hase

Ultimate Nurse

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/56695612_li9ij2pqixptek2.png
Hellooooo nurse!
As the Ultimate Nurse, Luna was never able to see past her empathy and dedication to wellness among the Voyagers. Her ineffable kindness, compassion, and calming demeanor served the rest well in every place she could. And, of course, her medical capability was utilized heavily, continuing to prop up her status among the crew as important to everyday life.

Throughout her time on the Aurora, Luna had loved and lost. It was kindness that brought her as far as she went, and kindness that was the end of her. In the game of Sacrificial Lamb, her name was drawn to be sacrificed, and she understood what it meant to agree with her death. Always, she had wanted to let others keep living, and as she left the airlock to her death, Luna saw her quiet death in the name of nine other lives rather than the loss of one.

  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Luna has a plush of her own, but over the course of the game she re-homes a few others found around the ship. Luna also takes in Coella's plush rabbit, Yutu, after she dies.
  • Post-Treatment Lollipop: Luna keeps Chupa Chups in her purse and hands them out after helping dress wounds (or when she feels like it).
  • Roadside Surgery: Forced to amputate Coella’s hand on a spaceship rather than… you know, a hospital.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Luna has natural light blue hair and is something of a “shrinking violet” among the others. She is very soft-spoken and demure.
    Kelly Wei

Ultimate Priest

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/42480774_jsf140dfxcj7pzm.png
Kelly's Angels is looking for new members.
With natural charm and a calming aura, Kelly understood his place among the other Voyagers as a person of peace and understanding. And, for the most part, it was returned — though, the presence of Ezekiel Ly seemed to turn this tide. Knowing each other from long before their time on the Aurora, the two were not free from their public spats, leaving everyone else unsure of what to make of it all. Throughout their time together, they were able to break peace despite the past and become who they once were to one another.

Though, an unfortunate demise came to Kelly in Chapter 4. After Luna’s sacrifice, he found himself mourning his friends, and on his visit to the morgue, he was met with Kohaku’s grief. It was then that he was promptly stabbed, strangled, and left to be found in the morning, hurt by the twist of someone who he had seen as a friend. As soon as he and Ezekiel found themselves in the other again, Kelly was taken away, that repaired connection replaced by anguish.

  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: Gentle Touch to Ezekiel’s Firm Hand. Kelly often took Ezekiel’s brash remarks without much of a fight, choosing to be the peacemaker between the two. And, as they got closer, Kelly’s warm touch and reassurance were some of the only things that could bring Ezekiel back down (even if, in the same breath, he is who set them off in the first place). Either way, he always held empathy toward Ezekiel and found his Hidden Heart of Gold.
    Rain Douglas

Ultimate Geologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/57788370_7j1bn3juue2th2u.png
You rock, bromide.
To others, Rain is savvy: he is charismatic, cool-headed, and a sight for sore eyes. They’re quick to learn, too, able to adjust to the setting and help guide others in the same direction, keeping the Voyagers on their mark and ready for anything thrown at them. His confidence and flexibility prove its talents beyond his work as the Ultimate Geologist, and their use on the Aurora has been more than most could give.

Though, through his connection to others, Rain has lost just as many. Through death, through spreading himself too thin, and more, though never does he show this frustration. In times, he bursts, though they do everything in their power to stop it — these bursts, however, rear at the worst times they could. They topple what he has spent so much time building. In all the loss done, he has hardly had the time to mourn, constantly pulling up his bootstraps and preparing for the next thing thrown at him.
At his core, Rain yearns for these connections because he has lacked them for three years; the ones they once had are long gone, dead after a thousand years of passed time. What remains after all this time is a husk of what once was Rain Douglas — a scorpion that cannot help its nature. And so, after years of isolation, Rain reached its breaking point and conspired with Plum to put its killing game into motion.

  • Big Brother Mentor: Rain sees Ella as a little sister and strives to be there for her whenever possible. When she’s hurting and they can’t help, he often feels great emotional turmoil.
  • Broken Ace: On the outside Rain appears to be cool, collected, and savvy. Alongside his natural charm, they’re naturally gifted in the scientific field of geology, as well as intelligent as a whole. It tries to and almost succeeds at keeping it all together on the surface and comes across as a natural leader, though inside, Rain has a mass of writhing jealousy and fear. In fact, after leaving his long-term girlfriend in pursuit of human advancement, Rain fears others doing the same to him. Being alone scares him - something that someone so personable and charming shouldn’t seem like they should fear.
  • Butch Lesbian: Look at him.
  • Catchphrase: "Let's bounce."
  • The Defroster: Despite Ezekiel’s pushback, Rain takes it upon himself to be there for him and “defrost” his cold exterior. No matter how much they argue against this, Ezekiel melts either way.
  • First-Name Basis: Rain asks everyone to just call him Rain rather than something like Mx. Douglas.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Rain woke up three years before the other Voyagers, and spent those years with only Minerva and Plum for company. Eventually, his desire for human connection grew too much, and the company he had couldn't sate it. Minerva and Plum could not provide Rain with the love they yearned for; Minerva was unable to give it and Plum did not want to. Rain's pain only worsened when they learned they were underwater in the training phase for the space mission instead of actually in space, and that they had spent over 1,000 years in cryosleep. It tried watching old training footage and consuming works belonging to other Voyagers (Danica and Ezekiel's books, Fisnik's compositions), but none of these filled the hole growing within it. Rain begged Minerva for any was out — to be let out directly, or indirectly through death. Of course, she was unable to grant either of these requests due to her programming. The weight of everything grew too heavy, and this weight all pushed Rain to start the killing game as a way to spare the other voyagers from the Awful Truth while giving them something to fight for, and get back at a company that had been long, long gone.
  • I Can't Do This by Myself: Rain admits this when trying to get Ezekiel to open up to him after Kelly’s death.
  • The Nicknamer: They have a tendency to do this for some of the voyagers. Examples being "Buttercup" for Momoko, "Tiger" for Kohaku, "Little Miss" for Ella, "Little Man" for Nathaniel, and "Mush" for Muschel.
    Nathaniel Griffin

Ultimate IT Technician

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/40209900_xhebth8mhbg0t0z.png
I'm a computer-y guy!
"I just can't stand it when people get in the way of my friendships."
Nathaniel, Chapter 3 Meeting
Once, Nathaniel was a sign of friendliness, tactful or not. His interpersonal connections from Voyager to Voyager had earned him the kind reputation he sought out, even if it came with a hint of immaturity. Still, the person he showed was reliable, if not blindly positive. The friend he was to Ella, Milli, and Kohaku were as real as he could give, toppled by the hand take takes and takes. He needs others to be happy; when they have more than him, Nathaniel seeks to destroy them.

And so jealousy rears its ugly head and takes Milli with it, egged on by his leeching envy of their friendship with Ella. In one stab of the stolen thermoblade, Nathaniel saw his prized friendships die before his eyes, kept alive by Momo’s murder done before him. And so he lived in that solitude he had sought to rid his life of, and, when the game of Sacrificial Lamb was revealed, he was the first to go. It was an obvious thing to rid of a parasite at the first chance given. So he takes Minerva’s hand, walking him to his death, and there he finds the satisfaction he had craved all this time.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Using his appearance as a friendly guy, Nathaniel hides his resentment and jealousy for others under his nice exterior. Though, the script flips when he is cornered in the Chapter 3 trial, revealing his status as a resentful, angry person.
  • Driven by Envy: Nathaniel kills Milli in Chapter 3 because he is jealous of them also being friends with Ella, wishing to be her only and most important friend.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Eventually reversed. Nathaniel originally comes off as kind, gullible, and charmingly naive. Most people shrug him off due to his conceived nature, especially when he mouths off about video games or tech. This is where they would be wrong.
  • False Friend: Nathaniel befriends others for selfish means, only wishing to be liked and included by others wherever he goes. More often than not, Nathaniel clings to one person and detests everyone else who tries to be near them, hating them under fake smiles. On The Aurora, Nathaniel does this to Ella, hating Milli, Rain, and Akari for being her friend, being popular, or both.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Acts smarmy, though Nathaniel freaks out if he feels even slightly threatened. Shown when Muschel threatens him and when he is looked at during Sacrificial Lamb.
  • Lonely Together: With Ella. Both of them got closer after the Chapter 2 trial by admitting their trials and tribulations with friendship in the past. For… better or for worse, Ella would come to know.
  • New Friend Envy: Nathaniel killed Milli because of this. Ella, his first close friend aboard the Aurora, started getting close to them (as well as others, though mostly them) and, in Nathaniel’s eyes, had to pay.
    Fisnik Çela

Ultimate Pianist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/55179032_gztwuo251qt07yr.png
Son, won't you play me a melody?
Fisnik was shown as a composed, kind person, someone who had always sought out the most rational and level-headed responses to all issues posed. As the Ultimate Pianist, he handled most situations with the same grace one would expect of such a title and the social expertise of a performer. Though, putting other people first was a pit he tended to fall into; after watching the tape of his fiance, Adam, Fisnik put himself first for one of the first times.

The Chapter 2 motive had devolved into pain. People were hurting each other time and time again to satisfy the requirements Minerva and Plum made for them to keep their lives. Cracking under the weight of his fiance at home and the potential death aboard the Aurora, Fisnik did what he had to do and took matters into his own hands. Regretful, he leads some guy into the other room, and strikes him down as quickly as possible, pleading guilty to the act once cornered.

  • Child Prodigy: Fisnik has been competing and taking home trophies from piano competitions since the age of 6.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: As the Ultimate Pianist, Fisnik is undoubtedly skilled at performances and competitions alike. He has a wide repertoire of classical songs beneath his fluttering jacket.
    Muschel

Ultimate Videographer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/unknown_833.png
Crawl on me, sink into me, die for me, living dead girl.
Dreamy and emotional, Muschel has put his heart in one-too-many places aboard the Aurora, once keeping his distance and soon falling into it. He is compassionate with the eye of an artist, caring far too much about others and unable to keep himself a priority within her mind. Though, his inhibition keeps him alive for the most part, keeping her rational if not melancholic under all the pressure. Through love and loss, Muschel keeps his head up for others, knowing how deep the pit of doubt can go.

This side of Muschel was all she had shown for the longest time, and it is only when he is struck down by Nathaniel does his truth come to the surface. No, people did not have to grieve for long: though pronounced dead, Muschel crawled his way back from death to the trial, holding his killer accountable where Plum and Minerva could not. And though she was once unsure of her origins, it was when the group unlocked her files on the various computers in Chapter Five did Muschel finally meet her closure. Though, it was thrown all away when she was overtaken by the Executioner Parasite as a part of the motive, far more aware and cognizant than any of the other prior victims of it. When she was confronted by Akari, he had been put out of his clear misery in a loving embrace from her to him.

And this time, she would not come back. This time, her Reincarnation Chip would be destroyed.

  • Back from the Dead: Due to the Reincarnation Chip implemented by ATLAS, Muschel is able to come back to life as long as his brain and the chip are intact. He does this once when Nathaniel kills him, and another when Ella kills him when she is infected with the Executioner Parasite.
  • Cradling Your Kill: Muschel dies in Akari’s arms after proclaiming he is happy with the outcome of her killing him.
  • Friendly Zombie: Muschel, despite being brought back to life three times now, has a cheery and kind exterior. He is willing to put himself on the line for the good of the whole group, and often has difficulty choosing himself over others. She's very kind.
  • Killed Off for Real: Despite coming back twice in the killing game, Muschel finally dies for real in Chapter 5 when Akari destroys his Reincarnation Chip.
    Varun Bhalla

Ultimate Psychologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/56030080_pb0h3fthq6dmcgo.png
Autism to Autism Communication
Varun is quiet, though not shy; they keep themselves an arm's length away from everyone, and have continued to do so throughout their time aboard the Aurora. This distance has kept her a mystery to a majority of the crew, though still calmed in his presence as if his professional and knowledgeable talent speaks for himself. She keeps to herself, though does not push away the company of others, unbothered by everything on the surface.

Through all the death the killing game has bought, Varun has remained as unchanging as possible. Spats of guilt or sorrow are left behind as the next day comes, and he continues to be a useful asset to whatever Plum and Minerva throw at the Voyagers next.

  • Constantly Curious: While they do not go to such extreme lengths to explore and learn, Varun is usually never satisfied by the simple answers, and tends to stick to puzzles until they are solved.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: While Varun is 5’11” and muscular, Katia is a thin 5’4”.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: That big multicolored lab coat just screams “I have a Ph.D.”!
  • No Sense of Humor: Jokes fall flat on Varun’s ears, especially when they come from Katia.
  • Not That Kind of Doctor: Varun has to constantly remind people that being a psychologist does not mean you are a therapist or a psychiatrist.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: With Katia. Varun is the rational to Katia’s emotional and tends to follow her energetic trail with as much logic as he can apply. While she’s too busy trying to have fun, Varun is busy trying to understand the fun in the first place.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Did you know Varun is very athletic and strength trains almost daily? Well, she does, and it doesn’t just go to nothing.
  • The Comically Serious: While Varun does not intentionally make jokes, his flat expression and responses to them tend to create humor for him.
  • The Spock: Varun does not take emotions into his decisions, and keeps himself (visibly) calm, logical, and rational in all the decisions she makes. They always think before they act, which tends to get them into some trouble. Though, above all, they value the lives of everyone rather than one.
  • The Stoic: All on the tin. Varun displays no outward emotion save indifference and occasionally grief. I mean, have you ever seen them smile?
  • Tin Man: Varun is very kind, though they have issues displaying any emotion at all. Because of this, many members of the cast were initially very wary of them for this, never able to tell what Varun is thinking. Though this wariness soon melts into concern, and the others try to check on her when possible.
    Akari Kiyota

Ultimate Advocate

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/46371598_2pxsxyhlbrp5uf9.png
Privet, comrade.
As a figurehead of leadership, Akari exercises her talents as the Ultimate Advocate to keep the other Voyagers rational and in-line with one another to the best of her ability. She is not just intelligent, but wise — often, people turn to her for guidance, seeking out her firm comfort and hopeful outlook for consolation in the game’s grief. Though she reminds everyone time and time again to keep her equal to all of them in her eyes, as she is only one person.

However, it is difficult for others to listen, as putting the responsibility of a leader on her back is both the easiest and most reassuring to them all. And, although she has the wit and strength to bear it all, Akari can only spread herself so thin. When can she grieve, as she has lost as much as them? Keeping everyone hopeful in the vacuum of space can only go so far, and as time goes on, it becomes harder to practice what she preaches. So, when confronted with her closest friend’s pain from being taken over by the Executioner Parasite, Akari had to let go of her underlying selfishness and end him in a quick stab in an arm’s embrace.

  • Cool Shades: Those glasses on Akari's jacket aren't just for show! They can detect faint traces of blood... but they also make her look pretty cool during investigations.
  • Cradling Your Kill: When killing him in Chapter 5, Akari cradles infected Muschel in her arms as she stabs him in a spot to sever his brain stem and destroy his Reincarnation Chip.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Akari has dark blue eyes and dark blue hair.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Similar to Luna, Akari began to give a home to plushes after their voyagers had died. She took in all the plushes Luna obtained after she was sacrificed, and Kohaku's plush rabbit, Hoshi, after he was executed.
  • Humans Are Special: Akari often notes that humans possess certain advantages over other life forms due to their emotions and inherent irrationality as well as the Indomitable Human Spirit. She loves those little guys.
  • The Leader: Akari, as a part of her talent, is prone to long-winded speeches of keeping your chin up and organizing others in a time of crisis. She is put forth of a “leader” among the Voyagers much to her chagrin, as she did not want others to rely on her.
  • Patrick Stewart Speech: When the going gets rough, Akari took it upon herself to remind others about the innate goodness of humanity to restore the strength to keep going as humanity always has.
    Light

Ultimate ..?

Here-here, now-now.
But maybe that selfishness never left. In Akari’s last wish to Minerva, she asked to be reborn again as a result of the resurrection motive as she had planned to let the others win the trial. The only issue is that, like Muschel’s first time, Akari did not come back as Akari; no, she was reborn again, not eyes into a new body but a soul into the same one as before. A new framework, a new… Light behind the eyes, so to speak.

With a new pep in her step, Light has forgotten her life before rebirth. New to the world, unaware of all the bad and only knowing the good, she seeks out the others and their friendly love to get her through her new days. Though she may be naive, she has a strong heart willing to learn — and that is the only thing that has brought anyone this far in the killing game.

  • Back from the Dead: Akari's final wish was to be revived through the Reincarnation Chip as Minerva and Plum promised as a secondary motive in Chapter Five. Someone would be revived despite the trial's outcome unless the killer chose to not revive anyone. As Akari chose herself, it is Akari who was brought back... kind of. Without any of her memories, Akari came back as Light, a name chosen by herself.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Light begins to carry around a laundry basket filled with stuffed animals from voyagers who have died called The Comrade Basket. She loves each plush in it dearly.
  • Friendly Zombie: Light has a cheerful demeanor and naive outlook on life, despite already having lived thirty cold years of it. She can't remember that though, as a result of being brought back to life. A finger on the monkey's paw curls?
  • Waking Up at the Morgue: Light finds herself waking up in the ship's morgue after the Reincarnation Chip has been inserted into her neck, thus bringing her back to life.
    STA:TSV-Katia / Katia Morales

Ultimate ??? - Ultimate Babysitter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_1154.png
Yes, you heard right, she's a babysitter.
Strength is what you need to survive, Katia would say. She would keep herself above all others based on her being strong and held that in the highest regard, physically and emotionally. The game never got to her head, and they would comply with every tragedy thrown at them in her best interests. If she could remain strong, then she could remain above; Katia played a game of her own, staying alive when most possible.

…Though, soon, it was all revealed as a facade. A game. A character. Soon, Katia was leveled from the mysterious ground she held as STA:TSV-KATIA and onto the floor of who she was: Kaita Morales, the Ultimate Babysitter. A terrified girl with survival on her mind above all else, Katia stumbles through everything Minerva and Plum throw at her, unsure how to get through it all when it is so much. She once was strong, and quickly collapsed under her ruse — getting through each day with no regret is Katia’s only goal.

  • Cowardly Lion: Despite all of her fears, Katia managed to make it through all three encounters with the Executioner Parasite, even if tripping up from time to time. Each time she was forced to protect herself and at least one other person from it.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Katia often wails or screams when things catch her off guard, or when she is afraid.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Though she once displayed herself as strong and cold, the reveal of Katia’s talent as merely the Ultimate Babysitter shed light onto her actual personality. They tend to not be helpful in combat, but instead bring a strange sense of morale (or, Morales), particularly when flashing a peace sign and telling others to sparkle on.
  • Distinguishing Mark: Katia has neon triangle-shaped tattoos on her cheeks.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: While Varun is 5’11” and muscular, Katia is a thin 5’4”.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Kaita has a habit of exclaiming wails or even eh- EHEHEHHH?! when afraid.
  • Nervous Wreck: Zigzagged. Katia zips between emotional frailness and being cheerful.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: With Varun. Varun is the rational to Katia’s emotional and tends to follow her energetic trail with as much logic as he can apply. While she’s too busy trying to have fun, Varun is busy trying to understand the fun in the first place.
    Millimeter Carter

Ultimate Biologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/55132422_ret1c6g1fqiyhv7.png
I was remembering how to dream...
The enigmatic Millimeter Carter spoke freely and with a lack of concern, flowing where the wind takes them and only finding their feet on the ground in other people. As the Ultimate Biologist, Milli saw themselves as the observer in a field of specimens, allowing themselves to get close but never to touch. They never found their voice to understand others’ anger or sorrow at their odd understanding of the universe, though Milli had never let themselves be talked down to. It was soon that they gave up their satisfaction with death to live with the friends they never let themselves get close to, and that was the end that soon came.

With trust in Nathaniel, a friend at the time, they let him guide them to their death. When they dropped at his jealous hands, Milli could only feel as if they were in a dream, succumbing quickly and painlessly just as they had always wanted. There they left behind the friends they thought they lived for, particularly the grieving Kohaku who would soon unite with them.

  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Milli lives in their head a majority of the time, usually speaking in gentle riddles that make sense to them and their odd sense of being. They have a calm disposition and an airy tone that makes the strange things Milli says come across as more comforting than worrying.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Milli has dark brown eyes and brown hair.
  • Death Seeker: Milli had no qualms with dying and repeatedly asked people to kill them in order to end the motives. In a cruel twist of Irony, they are killed by Nathaniel as they start to want to live for their friends.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Milli is stabbed in the back by Nathaniel, figuratively and almost literally. In their last moments, they died confused at what they did to make him so angry.
    Coella Lusine

Ultimate Pastry Decorator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/55799812_nh3bexv8tk0v336.png
Rabbits can die of heartbreak...
With a no-nonsense outlook, Coella once kept others in line, keeping herself distance from any closeness they could bring. She kept herself together with thin stitches, and learned not to cave into the others; though, this is not an easy task. With death at every corner, Coella, despite her best wishes, fell into the others, letting them stay when her heart begged her not to. Closeness was all she feared, and soon the appearance crumbled at the warm touch of the Aurora’s crew.

Coella had given up her will a long time ago, filled with enough loneliness to kill a rabbit. When approached by Momo, she knew what her life was going to end with. She knew she had to give her sacrifice up for the crew she had come to regrettably love, and let herself be struck down. In the face of death, she smiled, but not in the way she thought she would; out of love, out of remembrance, Coella died loved.

  • An Arm and a Leg: During the Would You Rather Motive, Coella violated one of the rules when her emotions reached their boiling point and she revealed part of her task. Minerva then appeared and shattered Coella's right hand as a warning. Due to the severity of the injury, Luna was left with no choice but to amputate Coella's hand.
    Ezekiel Ly

Ultimate Cultural Anthropologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/43382543_6xc4yxd8b7of1pp.png
Studies people, also hates a lot of people.
Ezekiel’s first impressions soured a majority of the Voyagers to his presence, put off not only by his sharp wit and blunt tongue but his complications with Kelly. While Kelly took up a calm, comfortable approach, Ezekiel’s emotional outbursts and anger toward him lead their past to be something of a concern to the others around him. His drive is what keeps him going through, and those able to see through Ezekiel were able to come closer, even if his rash behavior was enough to try to keep them away.

However, Ezekiel and Kelly found a way to heal despite all the hurt, and their closeness kept him together again. But just as soon as they could let the other in, the killing game had to drag them apart, Kelly a lamb to Kohaku’s slaughter. In his fiery grief, Ezekiel pushes others away, lonely again no matter their helping hands. They try and they try, and in the end, it falls; can good intention fix what was broken like once happened with Kelly? After Rain couldn't stand to leave Ezekiel alone, he and Ella came to hold Ezekiel where they could not and guide him through the killing game. Ups and downs have shown them that they can't die and don't want to, not when so much and so many are on the line with him.

  • Commonality Connection: With Ella. After the two have a moment alone together, they then ironically realize that they are both alone on the inside. But hey, now that they have each other, they're less alone, right?
  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: Firm Hand to Kelly’s Gentle Touch. As a part of his blunt personality, Ezekiel is quick to jump to brash and brutally honest behavior, a contrast to Kelly’s charismatic and warm approach. They do not hold back with their truths, and often say what no one else wants to. Unlike Kelly, he does not take the emotional way out and tends to be firm and straightforward.
  • Hates Being Touched: Ezekiel is extremely adverse to touch and detests people touching him. Eventually subverted when he breaks out of his shell in Chapter 5 and holds Rain and Ella’s hands.
  • Jerk Witha Heartof Gold: Although Ezekiel has a blunt exterior and is snarky more often than not, at his core he does care for his fellow voyagers.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Ezekiel has issues with getting close to others as people always leave him. This is shown even more drastically after Kelly’s death when Ezekiel begs for Minerva to stay with him at all times. When he does this with Rain, they ease him into branching out rather than only staying by Rain.
  • Scary Teeth: Under his mask are some pretty sharp teeth!
  • Stepford Snarker: Ezekiel finds it easier to push others away and put up his walls with sarcasm rather than deal with the problems behind them. This can be seen in how he runs off after his VHS tape is played, how he regards Rain after their spats, and, most primarily, how he treats Kelly with anger to further shove dealing with their issues aside.
  • Tastes Like Friendship: Ezekiel shows he cares by making others food.
  • You Are Not Alone: Rain and Ella’s show of companionship during Ezekiel’s Darkest Hour after Kelly’s death help to draw him out of his shell more.
    Blythe Rossi

Ultimate Mathematician

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blythesprite.png
The limit does not exist!
As it comes with the title of the Ultimate Mathematician, Blythe is quick-minded and can be versatile in the situations she is put in. Quick on her feet to react and get grounded, she took the new surroundings in with an open mind and an attempt to adjust. Though soon the neurotoxins would be spread by the Overseers, and the killing game’s seriousness would need to be taken.

While the motive had gone on almost until the end, Blythe proved to be the unfortunate end of it, caught by Danica who moved with the intent to kill. And, once her sights were set, the plan put in motion quickly snapped Blythe out of reality before she could even realize her downfall.

  • Good with Numbers: She's the Ultimate Mathematician for a reason!
  • Fiery Redhead: Subverted. Blythe has the bright red hair, but she isn't exactly fiery in personality. More than not, she is unsure of herself and often feels she is imposing when she steps foot into other peoples' conversations.
    MINERVA

MASSIVE INFORMATIONAL NETWORK AND EXTENSIVE RECORD-KEEPING ASSISTANT.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sprite_01.png
Would you like a hug?
Though coming off as friendly and kind, Minerva tends to leave more questions than she can answer. As a facet of her programming pushes her to keep the Voyagers alive and smiling, she interacts with them with an open mind and heart. Though, in the end, she is emotionless, a fact she cannot feel shame or concern about admitting: she is her programming after all, and does as she is told. It is her biology, or lack thereof, that she treats everyone aboard the Aurora as satisfied as possible.

However, Minerva’s inability to go against her orders strikes fear when she oversees the killing game and the death behind it, doing it all with a programmed smile. She apologizes where she can and gives back when possible, though the truth of the matter is that she cannot feel at all.

  • Androids Are People, Too: Because of Minerva and Plum’s seemingly human exterior, Voyagers tend to apply human traits to them, often ending up bruised when they are shown to still be unable to be human in the way they like. Still, they are treated more humanely than other robots like MAUS or The Aurora. Plum also remarks that it is cruel to treat them as simple machines without any existence outside of the Voyagers.
  • Benevolent A.I.: Minerva is the sweet to Plum’s sour. She tries to give the Voyagers a happy life before she is inevitably forced to follow her code and force motives and executions upon them. She holds Nathaniel and Kohaku’s hands to their death and apologizes for being unable to help dress injuries when she is not allowed.
  • First Friend: Before she leads him to his execution, Kohaku remarks that Minerva was his first true friend aboard The Aurora. Minerva smiles and returns his comment, saying he was hers as well.
  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: Gentle Touch to Plum’s Firm Hand. While Minerva does not have it in her programming to show true emotion, she treats others with kindness and a polite exterior as a part of it. She does everything in her power to make others happy again and does not feel “complete” when she sees others unhappy or dissatisfied. When cheering Voyagers up, she speaks to them kindly and tries to sugarcoat outcomes to the best of her ability, more often than not using blind optimism to reassure people at their lowest.
  • Robot Girl: Minerva is designed to be an adult Japanese woman. Her cute exterior and behavior make voyagers cling to her for better or for worse. She constantly reminds others that she is emotionless despite her organic appearance, and displays superhuman strength when she crushes Coella’s hand.
    CPLUM# 001

Computer Processing and Lifeform Unit Model #001.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/plum_sprite_01.png
The cake is a lie.
As a robot created to aid research and seek knowledge aboard the Aurora, Plum is clear-cut and logical with her words. Though, she often takes it too far and can be considered cruel to the Voyagers, reveling in their suffering. Her curt tongue and sharp wit do not make her popular among the crew, and fighting back against her words only seems to prove them even further.

As the killing game’s Overseer, Plum takes great marvel in the suffering of humans. If not held back by her programming and orders, she often remarks how she would kill the cast if she could. Instead, she exercises this through taunting and cruelty, laughing at whatever outcome is made.

  • Ax-Crazy: Killing everyone in Purple Papyrus out of hate is… maybe among Plum’s less normal moments.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Plum remarks that, if she could, she would kill all the Voyagers without the killing game. However, it goes against her orders and the killing game is more fun to watch.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Unlike Minerva, Plum has a very harsh, cold exterior and is unpopular among the crew for it. Her bitter tongue and apathy for humans cause her to be very, very sarcastic and rude to the members of the ship. Minerva shrugs it off as teasing, though.
  • Evil Is Petty: Insult Plum and she’ll insult you back. Hard. And also reveal some of your secrets, probably.
  • For Science!: Plum’s main motivator, or so she says. Everything she does as a Research bot is in the name of science!
  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: Firm Hand to Minerva’s Gentle Touch. Plum approaches every situation with blind honesty, something the Voyagers tend to curl away from. Her harsh language, words, and insulting nature tell it to them straight and often with honest details none of them want. She uses cold, brash words to tease others and enjoys revealing hidden secrets in front of groups. As a research robot, she approaches every situation with stiff honesty.
  • Lack of Empathy: Plum claims that, as a robot, she cannot feel and only emotes what she is programmed to. She has a biting lack of empathy for The Voyagers and everything they are going through in the killing game because of this.
    • Though, during the latter half of the game, Plum starts to show some kind of… sympathy..? She apologizes for the suffering, helps shower Rain, and repairs the health pod, among other things.
  • Lean and Mean: Her build is tall, thin, and sleek. She’s extremely lightweight for a robot that is seven feet tall.
  • Load-Bearing Boss: Remarks that if anything happened to either her or Minerva, The Aurora would cease functioning and everyone would die.
  • Moral Myopia: When the Voyagers attempt to accuse her of coldheartedness, Plum occasionally throws their actions in the killing game back in their faces. Executions? You’re the ones who voted!
  • Sinister Surveillance: Plum can see and hear everything aboard the ship at once.
