As a reclusive figure with a blunt tone and bizarre habits, Hughie was never seen as a kind or welcoming person aboard the ''Aurora''. Their willing interactions with others were only through his title as the Ultimate Dentist, where he would perform check-ups on the Voyagers' teeth. It wasn't until the first trial did anything in his mysterious, odd ways cracked: the teeth he keeps in a cigarette case were shown to everyone, who reacted in various shades of disgust.
Though quiet, Hughie was never particularly meek and kept this distance purposely. Before his death in Chapter 2, he sat to listen to his killer's work, and only after was struck twice in the head with a hammer. And from the scene Fisnik fled, tracking Hughie's blood down the hall.
