Main Series Characters

    Alex

Alex Bale

Played by: Alex Bale

An amateur filmmaker forced by a muse to make Spongebob videos. The protagonist of this series and the narrator of the theories.

  • Author Avatar: Or rather, is the author.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Shows signs of this after being stung by the Muse.
  • Deal with the Devil: Made a deal with the Muse to get Spongebob theories from him to boost his channel, while giving the muse raw meat.
  • Doing It for the Art: The main reason he wants to make films instead of continuing to make SpongeBob theory videos.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: At the end of Don't Feed the Muse III, he sucessfully remembers his name while being digested by the Muse, and escapes, blowing up the muse, who he later stops on.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Sure he defeated his muse, but his closest friends Victoria and Wesley have been assimilated, as well as dozens if not hundreds or thousands of others, who are heading to MOTHER for further instruction on global domination and it's unlikely they will all just let Alex go scot-free. He will also have to live with the guilt of having given Wesley his muse and thereby leading to his doom.

    Alex's Muse

Alex's Muse

An enigmatic creature living in Alex's home who creates video ideas for him in exchange for raw meat, and effectively holds him hostage.

  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: How the creature seems to snatch its victims.
  • Assimilation Backfire: During Alex's "digestion" he remembers his name and this causes the Muse to explode, while Alex (and his cat) are freed.
  • Big Bad: For the main series, at least.
  • Big Eater: Alex feeds it entire garbage bags worth of raw meat, and in the sixth episode it eats a live cat.
  • Eldritch Abomination: A giant, highly intelligent tentacle monster that secretes black goo and reproduces by stinging a human, causing them to eventually vomit out another muse probably fits the bill. Oh yeah, and there's more than one of them.
  • Faux Affably Evil: It keeps up a pleasant, polite attitude but is truly malevolent beneath that. And when Alex finally rebels by threatening to exploit its apparent weakness to light, the Muse taunts him, and then lets out a slow mocking laugh when Alex runs away upon seeing it's horrible true self. Leans slightly closer to the "Affable" part after it consumes Alex, but only slightly.
Alex: Here's what's gonna happen. You're gonna give me what was promised... and then you're gonna leave.
    Muse: Will it? WILL. IT.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Eating Alex's cat came back to bite it when said cat helps Alex escape its stomach
  • The Muse: Obviously.
  • Kick the Dog: Asks Alex to give it a live cat to devour, and eats it anyways when Alex changes his mind, mocking Alex after the fact.
  • Undignified Death: He explodes after Alex breaks free from his digestion, with his face landing in a trash can. Alex then stomps inside the trash can, ending him for good.
  • Unseen Evil: It's always shrouded in shadows. We finally see what it looks like in "Conspiracy Theory 9" and after that, one may wish it had stayed unseen.
  • Weakened by the Light: Implied. As it rarely leaves the darkness of Alex's basement, and when it does it exclusively sticks to the shadows, and/or turns off any light it can reach. Very much subverted in Conspiracy #9, where it's revealed it can be in light just fine.

    Victoria

Victoria Campbell

Played by: Brianna MacLean

Alex's friend who wants to help him get through the depression he seems to have. Except she's actually another slave to the Muses, and encourages Alex to keep his.

    Wesley

Wesley Harold

Played by: Costandinos Karalis

Alex's other friend. Another filmmaker who's also a big fan of the SpongeBob theories. Is also struggling to get his film project funded, and ends up getting another Muse passed to him by Alex.

    Alex's cat

A cat who Alex adopted and which later becomes the Muse's next meal.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: At first glance, just a meal for the Muse. Turns out to be Alex's key to escape.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Escapes the Muse's stomach along with Alex.
  • Monster Munch: Poor thing is eaten by the Muse. It gets better.
  • Not Quite Dead: It turns out to have been still alive inside of the Muse, which proves instrumental in saving Alex in the end.
  • Spanner in the Works: It manages to survive being eaten by the Muse and helps guide Alex back out, allowing him to kill the Muse and free them both from its stomach.
  • Walking Spoiler: Plays a bigger, more spoiler-y role than expected in the finale.

Happy Meat Farms

    Happy Meat Farms

Happy Meat Farms

A company claiming to offer meat products from humanely raised animals. Except their practices are anything but humane. Alex did an ad read for them in one of his videos and Victoria directs their TV commercials.
  • Big Bad: For wider parts of the ARG.
  • Corporate Conspiracy: Behind a rather elaborate one, involving spreading the Muses and eventually creating some kind of One World Order.
  • Deconstruction: Possibly a subtle one for YouTube sponsors, given they sponsored one of Alex's videos and offered the same to The Cynical Critic.
  • Evil, Inc.: They are this to an absurd degree. Not only do they conduct unethical genome experiments on animals and people (many of which are volunteers most likely unaware of their true intent or noncompliant employees and journalists) that turn them into horrific examples of Body Horror, but they also are heavily implied to be allies of (if not the creators of) the Muse species (including a larger version known as MOTHER), and are able to consistently cover up their misdeeds with schemes such as The Paradox Files, a fictional movie series based on aliens. And if all that wasn't enough, they are even explicitly aiming towards putting the world under a New World Order.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: For the main videos, where they only appear in brief advertisements.
  • Seen It All: Whoever is writing the descriptions of the mutations in their videos reacts to the body horror in really bored ways. For instance, their reaction to a meat creature hanging from the ceiling? "Get that thing down".
  • Sickening Slaughterhouse: Exaggerated. They perform inhumane experiments on animals and later human beings to get more meat.
  • One Nation Under Copyright: Likely what they envision if their plans succeed.

    Muses in General
The "Children" of MOTHER, the Muses are tentacled creatures that act as guides to people before taking their form and devouring them.
  • Assimilation Plot: Their main goal, to "befriend" people before taking their form, and then eating them, gaining their memories and being able to impersonate them.
  • Bigger on the Inside: Muses shapeshift into their host, and then eat the host but remain the same size.
  • Tentacled Terror: They have many tentacles are are utterly horrorfying both in what they look like, and the way they torture then consume their hosts.
  • Transferable Memory: Muses gain their hosts' memories by first eating them, and digesting them. Whenever someone is eaten, there is a lot of pixellation indicating that it's working like a digital file.

    Ramona Bynes (SPOILERS)
Ramona Bynes (AKA SUBJECT #H0027) is the founder of Happy Meat Farms. She was kidnapped and experimented on, while a muse took her form in the Happy Meat Farms commercials.
  • All for Nothing: Her attempt to kill Mother with a weapon from Conspiracy Carl gets her captured and her channel taken over by HMF who use it to make it seem like it's part of an ARG for a film called "The Meat Paradox".
  • Big Good: After escaping from Happy Meat Farms she stole many of their files and began exposing them on the channel "This Place Is Not Happy".
  • Dark and Troubled Past: According to Jared, Ramona grew up on a farm with loving parents and animals which she cared for deeply. One day a fire burned down the farm and her parents. She was infected by a Muse who helped her make Happy Meat Farms. Rather than treating the animals humanely they were grotesquely experimented much to Ramona's horror on. Ramona's muse turned into a doppleganger and subjected Ramona to the same experiments turning her into a monster.
  • Evil Doppelgänger: Her muse turned into a one of her, and is starring in the HMF commercials. Unlike other Muses this is not a result of assimilation, and Ramona was experimented on rather than being "digested".
    Ramona Bynes: That's not meeeeee!!!
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: She wanted to create a farm where livestock were treated fairly. However the opposite happened with the animals and people being horribly mutated and experimented on including Ramona herself. Later when she attempted to kill Mother, it's heavily implied it was a trap and she was re-captured by HMF and her channel was taken over by them.
  • Uncertain Doom: Presumably killed by Jared by the time of the events of Don't Feel the Muse III.
  • Was Once a Man: She was human before she turned into one of HMF's experiments.

    Jared (SPOILERS)

Jared Warrenheim/MUSE J0001

The head of Happy Meat Farms' IT department. "Mother's Number One Special Boy", at least according to himself. He was the Host to the Muse J0001 and was eventually digested by them.
  • Abusive Parents: His background states that his mother was verbally abusive and manipulative, and he desperatly craved her approval.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unknown exactly how much of the original Jared is left in the second attempt of Muse J0001 attmpting to assimilate him, given he was "digested" but not "assimilated". It's possible the original Jared is in control and is willingly loyal to Happy Meat Farms rather than Muse J0001 killing him like in other cases, or whether Jared really was killed off but the process caused Muse J0001 absorbed his personality.
  • Assimilation Backfire: His muse failed to assimilate him the first time, cauisng the muse to be defective. The second attempt was more successful but the damage required them to have a mechanical body.
  • Asshole Victim: He's beat up the end of the IT Department files. Given how much of a dick he appears to be, it's hard to feel bad about it. In his secret file showing his life as a human, he is stated to have harassed and stalked the female employees, accessing their personal information and utilizing their fears against them when they rebuffed his advances.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He comes across as being rather goofy, pathetic, and cartoonish and Romana later takes him down in one punch. However as the IT guy of Happy Meat farms he is complicit in their atrocities, and he would later capture or murder Ramona at the end of the ARG.
  • Body Horror: Whatever Happy Meat Farms did to him in order to augment his body with cybernetics, it doesn't look like it was a pleasant experience.
  • The Cameo: His human self briefly appears several times in "DON'T FEED THE MUSE III".
  • Cyborg: Appears to be one, with robotic hands and three glowing mechanical eyes more or less grafted onto his face.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: What essentially drove him when (and possibly after) he was human. His mother was abusive to him but he always wanted his approval. He also had had problems with women, stalking them and being Not Good with Rejection. HMF would have him focus these feelings to the Eldritch Abomination "MOTHER".
  • The Dog Bites Back: His mother was verbally abusive and manipulative to him, and he ended up feeding her to mother. Somewhat deconstructed as this was very traumatic for him.
  • The Dragon: As Mother's "Number One Special Boy", he acts as this to her.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: This is exploited by HMF. He was stated to desperately want the approval of his mother, so they decided to get him to return those feelings to "MOTHER".
  • Evil Genius: He's the head of the IT department and was stated to be very capable with computers and technology.
  • Freudian Excuse: His mother was abusive, he had a difficult childhood, no friends in high school, and the only stable positive thing in his life was watching episodes of Spongebob Squarepants.
  • Hated by All: Implied. He's first mentioned in the HR orientation video, where the narrator claims that most people at HMF don't like to talk to him.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Seems to have this, given his big ego and insistance on being mother's number #1 boy is becuase his actual mother was abusive and he never felt like he had her approval. In his file he would write in his background information "What a loser!".
  • Jerkass: His one appearance so far sets him up as being egotistical and obnoxious.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • As a human Jared would stalk at least five different women and psychologically torment them, doing things such as leaking their personal e-mails and shoving a dead rat in the desk of one who had a phobia of rats.
    • MUSE J0001 would tell Jared that his mother never loved him and that she wishes he was deat to futher break him down psychologically to have him ready for being assimilated.
  • Laughably Evil: Creepy as he is, he's also pretty funny.
  • Manchild: As a human, he was a 27 year old IT technician who was capable of quoting any episode of SpongeBob. Moves to Psychopathic Manchild after his transformation such as gleefully telling Ramona that if she stops releasing the files her death would be 30% less painful.
  • Parental Favoritism: Claims to be Mother's "number one special boy". Whether or not this is true or even if MOTHER is capable of love remains to be seen.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He brought his mother to his workplace and brought her to MOTHER'S chamber.
  • Sanity Slippage: What MUSE J0001 attempts to do to him, as Muses do to all their hosts. The Muse routienly whispered to him in his mother's voice that his mother didn't love him and he should kill her. This drove Jared more insane until he eventually agreed to kill his mother.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Has this with Ramona despite not actually being siblings. He insists that MOTHER loves him more than Ramona.
  • Slasher Smile: His default expression, as seen in his very brief visual appearance, is a wide, deranged smile.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Played with; he's head of HMF's IT Department, so he is reasonably important to the company, but also describes himself as "very cool and very popular", which is contradicted by a previous video that implies Jared is not well-liked by his coworkers.
  • Smug Snake: Comes off as arrogant and condescending, and his one notable appearance ends with him being knocked out by Ramona.
  • Troll: When accessing the IT files, Jared has replaced good chunk of them laughing at the viewer for wasting their time and making other jokes.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: His file states that he dissected animals in his backyard as a child.
  • Was Once a Man: Moreso than the other hosts, even, as while they still look reasonably human, he's got three robotic eyes, cyborg limbs and an unnaturally wide mouth.

    Mother (SPOILERS)

Mother

A monstrous creature kept by Happy Meat Farms whose DNA is used for their experiments. Might also be the creator of the Muses.
  • Eldritch Abomination: And one that can turn other beings into one.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Along with Happy Meat Farms themselves, she/it doesn't have any relevance to the main plot (yet, at least), but is a major part of the backstory of ARG's universe.
  • Karma Houdini: At the end of Don't Feed the Muse III, Mother has reached a gargantuan size and has an army of loyal Muse infiltrators and remains undefeated.

Side Channel Characters

    The Cynical Critic

Mark Mayhew/"The Cynical Critic"

    Mark's Mother

Cecile Mayhew

Mark's (The Cynical Critic's) mother, who is critically ill and needs money for treatments. A fact his Muse is keen to keep reminding him of.
  • Body Horror: Cecile Mayhew, Carl's wife and Mark's mother, contracted cancer from infected ground beef, being the catalyst for their start on the internet, with Mark becoming the Cynical Critic in order to get money to reinstate her health insurance, something his Muse helped with. Sadly, it later turns out she ended up succumbing to her cancer.

    Antonio

Antonio

  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: His treatment of Mark (especially when he converts him to a host) very creepily resembles a Domestic Abuse scenario.
Antonio: (speaking gently to a clearly pained and crying Mark while "comfortingly" stroking his hair) You know I don't wanna hurt you… you're my best friend…
  • False Friend: "Helps" Mark during his time as the Cynical Critic, but is a representative of Happy Meat Farms. Once Mark loses his patience with him, Antonio turns him into a host.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He's very cheerful and upbeat… even as he's painfully converting Mark into a host for the Muse.
  • Fingore: In the IT Department Files, it's stated his fingernails were removed.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He wanted to be a nature documentarian before becoming a commercial editor for Happy Meat Farms, only doing so because he thought he was still helping animals. Then he learned what they were actually doing to animals, and decided to leak the information to the public, prompting his being turned into a host.
  • Was Once a Man: "IT Department Files 029" reveals he used to be an unassimilated commercial editor for the Happy Meat Farms company, but was the one responsible for leaking the company's actual actions to the public, prompting his being turned into a host.

    Sonc The Blue Rat (SPOILERS)

"Sonc The Blue Rat"/Mark's Muse

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sonc_profile_1_9.jpg
It could always be worse
The Muse that controls Mark (The Cynical Critic) and appears to control the "Sonc The Blue Rat" channel on YouTube, which posts cartoons (of the titular rat) and comments to torment and bully Mark into compliance.

    Conspiracy Carl

Carlton Mayhew/"Conspiracy Carl"

  • Conspiracy Theorist: Conspiracy Carl is one of these and most of his videos consist of him talking about them. If you find the archives for his website, it turns out that he used to be a completely normal middle-aged man, and his "Conspiracy Carl" persona was created by his own Muse.
  • Engineered Heroics: "Conspiracy Carl" would release a video in February of 2022 regaling how he had been a puppet of the Illuminati, but wasn't anymore, having killed the "thing" that attacked him in his prior video, and would stop at nothing until he destroyed the Illuminati once and for all. It's all a lie though. Carl was attacked and converted into a Host by his muse, his final moments being reimagined to better suit his "Conspiracy Carl" persona.
  • Gaslighting: "IT Department Files 029" would reveal him as a victim of it. When he was first starting out as "Conspiracy Carl", he lacked a lot of the energy he'd later be known for, looking like a simple middle-aged man casually talking about the Illuminati, and his videos being lucky if they got 10 views. Happy Meat Farms proceeded to have him stalked by their workers, subjected him to high frequency noises, and began building towers in his neighborhood to increase his paranoia, turning him into the more manic "Conspiracy Carl" he'd later be known as.
  • Killed Off for Real: He is fully assimilated by his muse.
  • Muggles Do It Better: Although it's currently unknown what exactly he used, he was somehow able to kill his Muse and several others which were sent after him. Later turns out to be a ruse to recapture and possibly kill Ramona as his "weapon" was just a molten fragment of her childhood "EZ-Breezy JR" easy-bake oven.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Carlton's video from September of 2021 has him all but breakdown, unable to keep up the "Conspiracy Carl" persona as he goes off script and tries to warn his viewers about what's going on, while apologizing to his son Mark for leaving a Muse with him. His own Muse proceeds to eliminate and convert him before he can say too much.

  • Ax-Crazy: Many episodes show that her mental state is... less than stable, so much that she keeps having mental breakdowns in the form of frantic nightmares.
  • Desires Prison Life: Mrs. Puff getting prison time was her only form of escape from SpongeBob... at first, until it is taken away from her by the warden, Richard A. Bottomfeeder, forcing her to be taught by the sea sponge as a drivers-ed student for the summer. Even worse, she can't leave town as that would violate her parole, meaning she'll be stuck with him for a long time.
  • My Greatest Failure: After she accidentally causes the death of a powerful lawyer's relative, Puff moves out of New Kelp City to start over in Bikini Bottom, promising to never make the same mistake of giving a license to someone who doesn't deserve it.

  • Meaningful Name: His last name is Bottomfeeder, and he's a jerk who is trying to make Mrs. Puff's life hell.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Is trying to ruin Mrs. Puff's life through any means necessary, but Alex establishes that Mrs. Puff is a former criminal from New Kelp City that is genuinely insane. He later speculates that Richard's grudge is the result of her former student killing a close relative.
  • Revenge: Is taking revenge on Mrs. Puff for accidentally causing his relative's death.

  • Anti-Villain: It's implied that she only wanted to protect Pearl from the evolved fish, Mr. Krabs included.
  • Dark Secret: She (or more accurately her corpse) is the true source of the Krabby Patties. No wonder Mr. Krabs keeps the formula a closely-guarded secret.
  • Human Resources: Her carcass is being used to produce Krabby Patties, which explains how the patties seem to be near-infinite.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to know anything about her without revealing everything about Alex's evolutionary theory.

    Neptune

King Neptune

  • Touched by Vorlons: Was given his powers and advanced abilities by the Atlantean aliens so that he could overthrow King Poseidon.
