Main Characters

    Eric
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ericsilenthill_5.png
If we run away here, the nightmare won't end!

The game's Player One character. Eric is an inquisitive university student on a field trip with his classmates, wanting to investigate the sinking of the Little Baroness steamboat in Toluca Lake after having recurring nightmares about it.

  • Badass Normal: A requirement for Silent Hill protagonists, with the added point of not even using any other weapon but firearms to defend himself. If the player so desires, they can cruise through the whole game with only a handgun.
  • Composite Character: His drive to save Emilie mirrors Harry Mason's determined search for his daughter, and he also dresses similarly to Henry Townshend.
  • Determinator: He'll save Emilie and find out the truth behind the sinking of the Little Baroness no matter what comes his way.
  • Famous Ancestor: The captain of the Little Baroness was his great-grandfather.
  • Flat Character: The story is ultimately focused on the Little Baroness and its passengers, with Eric and Tina serving exclusively as player avatars and not having much development besides keeping Emilie and their other friends safe.
  • Informed Attribute: His inquisitive nature shows as the game goes on, but the game info also describes him as being "quiet", yet he's repeatedly screaming in shock at the monsters or wondering things out loud.
  • Nice Guy: Emilie loves being around him, and he decided to turn his investigation of Silent Hill into a field trip so he could have fun with his friends, even if they didn't know how bad it was gonna turn out to be.
  • Only One Name: His last name is never revealed. A rumor for the longest time was that his full name was "Eric Lake", but this has since been disproved.
  • The Protagonist: Share the same trope with Tina, though he seems to receive a little more importance.
  • Action Survivor: Both him and Tina went through waves of monsters to save their friends and Emile.
    Tina

"What is happening! I can't take this anymore!!"

The Player Two character, Tina is Eric's university classmate, studying to become a teacher in the Department of Education. She met Emilie and her father via email and joined Eric on his trip to Silent Hill to meet with her.

  • Badass Normal: Just like Eric, she's limited to only firearms to fend off the monsters with, but she'll still fight her way through the town to keep Emilie safe.
  • Determinator: Nothing will keep her from getting Emilie back to her father and out of Silent Hill.
  • Flat Character: Like with Eric, the story doesn't give Tina much room to develop besides her protective nature, focusing instead on the Little Baroness and Emilie's relation with it.
  • Parental Substitute: Towards Emilie, and heaven forbid any harm comes her way.
  • Satellite Character: Compared to Eric, whose history actually is important for Silent Hill, Tina is mostly just tagging along as Emilie's escort through the monster-infested town with no other personal connections.

    Emilie Anderson

"Mommy is calling me to go to the lake."

A little girl who commutes back and forth to Midwich Elementary, having met Tina through email. Her mother, deceased by the time of the game's events, appears in Emilie's dreams and beckons her to Toluca Lake in the Silent Hill area.

  • Broken Bird: She was traumatized after watching her mother die to a robber, but her young mind also made her think she could still see her again one day. Then she starts to have dreams of her mother calling her to Silent Hill...
  • Call-Back: The burglar who robbed the Anderson house is named Scott Fairbanks, which is one of the options heard during Silent Hill 2's elevator "game show" for the question of who killed the Locane twins (the correct answer being Walter Sullivan).
  • Demonic Possession: She's being influenced by the spirits of the Little Baroness' passengers, corrupted by the evil of Silent Hill. In particular, the ghost of a little girl named Hanna with her own tragic history with her mother seems to get to her the most, wanting Emilie to join her in the afterlife.
  • Expy: The fact she was lured into Silent Hill by recurring dreams and is part of a vengeful spirit's plans is a likely reference to Sharon Da Silva, Cheryl Mason's counterpart from the movie adaptation.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: An innocent little girl with blond hair.
  • Missing Mom: She died to a robber who invaded her home one night.
  • Wham Line:
Frank: Oh yes, you're right. I understand. Let me ask you again... What is your name?
    Emilie: Hanna.

    Frank Anderson

"Emilie, get away from her! She's not your mother! Have you forgotten that she is..."

Emilie's father, a former doctor and the chief librarian in charge of maintaining the Silent Hill Historical Society.

  • Foil: To Hanna's mother Lorraine. Both are widowed parents to their respective charges and genuinely loved them depending on the ending you get, but were involved in tragedies that resulted in their daughters becoming different in some way (Emilie being influenced by Silent Hill, and Hanna dying and becoming corrupted).
  • Good Parents: Sincerely loves his daughter and wants to keep her safe.
  • My Greatest Failure: Feels responsible for letting his wife die, since he was out of the house working at a hospital. He's since taken to staying with Emilie more and changed his profession to one that let him be around her longer.

    Eric's friends

Eric's friends from university back in Portland. They joined him and Tina on their trip to Silent Hill. The group, composed of Jessie, Ryan, George and their driver Bill, is separated after a rough awakening when the town is dominated by fog and monsters.

  • Already Done for You: Bill the driver is found as soon as the game starts, wounded and on the ground right outside Jack's Inn, and he gives his handgun to Eric so he can defend himself. He's always given as "alive" at the game's ending and it's the three remaining people Eric and Tina need to worry about.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: George, who was about to be killed by a giant monstrous doll, gives a hearty thumbs-up when he's saved.
  • Flat Character: They only exist to be saved and determine what happens in the ending.
  • Involuntary Group Split: They're separated when Silent Hill is overtaken by the monsters and need to be rescued in different areas from different creatures;
    • Jessie is trapped in Brookhaven Hospital and needs to be rescued from Pyramid Head.
    • Ryan is bound to the Toluca Prison's courtyard stage and must be saved from the Split Worm when the place transitions to the Otherworld Toluca Lake.
    • George is pulled towards the darkness at the depths of the Labyrinth and needs to be saved from the Mama creature.
  • Race Against the Clock: Each boss battle that requires the player to save one of the group members has an invisible timer that, should it run out, will result in that character dying, which means the player needs to defeat each boss as quickly as possible. George is the only character whose timer is actually visible for some reason.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Apart from Tina (who's a player character), Jessie is the only girl in the group.

Little Baroness

    Hanna

"For a very long time... In the water... It was cold... And dark..."

A little girl with blond hair who suffered from an unnamed disease. In 1918, her mother invited her for a small boat trip at Toluca Lake that ended in disaster when the Little Baroness sank beneath the waves due to unknown causes... Except there is more to the story that Eric wants to know about.

  • And I Must Scream: She's been haunting Silent Hill since 1918, suffering in agony at the thought that her mother killed her for evil reasons and doomed her to be in a watery hell for eternity all alone.
  • Anti-Villain: She's just a scared and confused little girl whose last memory is her mother throwing her overboard to drown in Toluca Lake, convinced in the afterlife that she was evil and did so out of selfish reasons. Her anger essentially made her possessive and vengeful, trying to draw Emilie towards the lake so she won't suffer eternity alone.
  • Big Bad: Her corrupted spirit is this for The Arcade.
  • Composite Character: Her status as an ill girl possibly mercy-killed by a loved one makes her a younger version of Mary Shepherd-Sunderland from 2, along with being a little girl with an Ambiguously Evil nature similarly to Alessa Gillespie from the original.
  • Death Glare: Before the final boss fight with her, complete with Supernatural Gold Eyes.
  • Expy: As the one whose influence drew Emilie to Silent Hill, she seems to be a stand-in for the movie adaptation's take on Alessa Gillespie.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: In life, she was an innocent little girl with blond hair who was bedridden, but trying her hardest to stay positive.
  • One-Winged Angel: She becomes the gigantic Phantom creature at the game's climax.
  • Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: A blond-haired variation of the trope.

    Lorraine

"Hanna, don't you feel like going outside? Why don't we go to Toluca Lake tomorrow? We haven't been there for years."

Hanna's mother, who kept her company at Brookhaven before offering to take her out on a steamboat ride over Toluca Lake.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Whether or not she truly loved her daughter. Hanna's final memories are twisted from shock, and it's implied there are other supernatural elements interfering both with her spirit and the sinking of the Little Baroness itself. Even if the player achieves the Good Ending, Emilie is tossed down into the lake by a monstrous version of Lorraine with the same bony arms that dragged Hanna deeper into the water when she was thrown, which makes it unclear if it's a manifestation of Hanna's mind or one of said supernatural entities.
  • Composite Character: She's the likely evil mother of a little girl who died under tragic circumstances similarly to Dahlia Gillespie, while also having the backstory of an ill loved one she might have felt compelled to kill to put them out of their misery much like James Sunderland and Mary Shepherd.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: If the player achieves the Good Ending, Lorraine drowned her daughter so she wouldn't suffer from her disease any longer and delay the inevitable.
  • Foil: Much like James Sunderland, Lorraine had a loved one she truly cared for suffering from a fatal disease that she chose to kill so they'd stop suffering. Unlike James, karma struck back swiftly and she herself was taken not long afterwards.
  • Good Parents: In the Good Ending, at least, where she drowned Hanna to spare her the pain of her disease.

    The Captain

"Hanna, what's wrong? Why are you crying?"

The unnamed captain of the Little Baroness who befriended the young Hanna during their trip across the lake. Eric feels a connection with him for unknown reasons.

  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Played for Laughs in the UFO Ending, where the Captain is in cahoots with the aliens and abducts both Hanna and Emilie, forcing Tina and Eric to commandeer a spaceship and chase him into space in a parody of Gradius.
  • Cool Old Guy: He was kind and gentle towards Hanna. The Good Ending shows his spirit consoling Hanna's and reassuring her that her mother loves her very much. He also gives Eric a fond farewell as the ship moves into the afterlife.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He has no given name and is only known as "Captain".
  • Famous Ancestor: He's Eric's great-grandfather.

Monsters

    Robbie

As an interesting variation on a recurring character throughout the series, Robbie the Rabbit is fought in this game as an enemy, appearing in groups all throughout Lakeside Amusement Park as the most seen enemy of the area.

  • Ascended Extra: From a minor Running Gag of sorts spotted throughout the series to finally becoming a fully hostile entity in The Arcade as a monster type seen during the Amusement Park section.
  • Chainsaw Good: Some of them have chainsaws that they'll swing at Eric and Tina for massive damage.
  • Cold Sniper: Some of them have hunting rifles and will position themselves away from the player to shoot at them.
  • Expy: Throwing hatchets and wielding chainsaws while they spread around the park and flank the player makes them act not too dissimilarly to Los Ganados if they had access to rifles.
  • Hell Is That Noise: This version of Robbie tends to announce their presence with a high-pitched, cartoony laugh that sounds forced and disturbing. Killing them makes them let out shrill screams before they melt.

    Tuberculosis

The second boss of both the game itself and the Brookhaven Hospital section. A giant winged monster found at the hospital roof in the Otherworld, it's keeping Emilie under its protection.

  • Anti-Villain: The game leads the player to believe the creature is keeping Emilie hostage as the other bosses do to Eric's entourage, but Tuberculosis is actually protecting her from the other monsters by keeping her at the roof away from everything else.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: A grown, exposed tumor that looks like a beating heart, which it often tries to cover so the player won't shoot at it for massive damage.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: Its right hand is overgrown and shaped into an actual axe blade that it can swing to deal damage.
  • Boss Room: The Otherworld Brookhaven Hospital's rooftop.
  • Demonic Head Shake: Often. It also extends to its arms on occasion.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: Hurt it enough and it will take to the air, trying to pull a surprise attack on Eric and Tina as it hides in the red fog surrounding the roof. It's possible to stop the attack from coming by shooting just as it's about to land.
  • Meaningful Name: Tuberculosis is a potentially lethal and airborne lung disease that is also dangerously contagious. The monster itself is also potentially lethal and airborne, not to mention being fought at a hospital, a place where diseases such as tuberculosis would be treated.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: It has some draconic traits to its design, such as the muzzle, a tail and wings.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The monster is named after a lung disease that might cause a build-up of blood or fluid in the lungs, effectively leading a person to drown, similarly to how Hanna herself drowned in Toluca Lake. The creature's design also brings to mind a fairy tale, acting as a combination of both the heroic knight and the monstrous dragon, coming to Emilie's help and defending her from other monsters.
  • Winged Humanoid: It has two flaps of skin that extend from its arms that function as wings. Despite its size, those things do allow it to fly.

    Mama

A giant doll-like monster that drags Eric's friend George into the darkness in an attempt to kill him at a familiar underground graveyard.

  • Attack Its Weak Point: Its head and navel take the most damage.
  • Battle Theme Music: "Until the Stars Go Out", the same theme used in Silent Hill 4: The Room for the final boss fight against Walter Sullivan. Ironically, Mama is fought at the same place where Walter's grave is first seen.
  • Boss Room: The graveyard section of the Labyrinth, previously seen in Silent Hill 2.
  • Ceiling Cling: It will often get on the ceiling and crawl around it facing downwards so it can spew out Creepers at the player.
  • Composite Character: Invoked. Its face looks like a mixture of both Emilie and Hanna's facial features.
  • Creepily Long Arms: Creepily long forearms, woodened and extending like they're stripped to the bones. The legs are pretty much the same.
  • Creepy Doll: Unlike the usual examples of this trope, this doll is a giant, towering over the player as it attacks them. Not only that, it has creepily thin arms and spikes all over its body.
  • Flunky Boss: It can spew out Creepers from its mouth.
  • Lightning Bruiser: It's fast, able to go from one part of the cemetery to another in seconds while crawling, dealing a lot of damage if it hits the player.
  • Marionette Motion: It moves like one at first with its lanky, jerky movements. When its health is low enough, it drops that so it can crawl at top speed across the terrain.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The creature's face is a mixture of both Emilie and Hanna's features, hinting that the two have a connection. The name "Mama" and the lanky arms might be an allusion to Hanna's mother and how she held up her daughter to throw her into the lake, reflected later when Lorraine's spirit does the same to Emilie with creepy bony hands of her own. The ability to spew Creepers might be a nod to "spewing poison", ie saying harsh, hurtful things under the guise of something more pleasant. The doll-like shape and the fact that it looks adult could also be a reference to Hanna's resentment over not being able to grow up, since dolls are typically toys made for young girls.

    Phantom (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

The fully corrupted form of Hanna's spirit, turned into a towering monstrosity that resembles a decapitated head with huge tendrils for hair, a long bony arm emerging from its mouth. The final obstacle in Eric and Tina's way.

  • Battle Theme Music: "Theme of Hanna", an intense song with strings and a heavy, pounding beat.
  • Boss Banter: On occasion, especially as its health depletes, the player might hear Hanna's distorted voice begging for her life.
  • Boss Room: A Nowhere-like dimension at the depths of Toluca Lake.
  • Creepily Long Arms: It has a single huge one that comes out of its mouth, using it to punch at Eric and Tina or slam its hand down at them. The "Hands of Phantom" that it summons also qualify.
  • Eyeless Face: It has huge membranes where its eyes should be, making its giant face look like it's eternally sad and screaming.
  • Final Boss: The last enemy of the game and the final deciding factor of the game's ending.
  • Flunky Boss: The Phantom will summon about 8 bony hands from the water to attack the player. In order to achieve the Good Ending, the hands must all be shot until there's none left. Not doing so earns the Bad Ending.
  • Losing Your Head: It's a monstrous version of Hanna that is only comprised of her demonic-looking head.
  • Prehensile Hair: Its hair-like tendrils will sometimes emerge from the water in front of Eric and Tina and come down swinging at them to deal damage.
  • Rule of Symbolism: It's a physical embodiment of Hanna's pain and suffering in the water both while and after she drowned. The hands clinging to the creature are a reference to another cutscene where a group of these hands drag her into the depths, symbolizing her drowning and the paranormal influence that caused the sinking of the Little Baroness. The huge arm coming out of her mouth is a physical representation of her desperate cries for help that were never heard, and her struggle to try and get out of the water without success.
