The American People's Commonwealth is a nation of socialists who swear no loyalty to the Soviet Union, condemning it as a fascist abomination. In 1987, when the US finally collapsed, these like-minded activists enforced their iron grip, expelling all upper class civilians, or at least the ones who hadn't left yet. Since then, however, the economy has stagnated and the industrial might of the Commonwealth has collapsed, and it is stuck in a never-ending political deadlock between Noam Chomsky and the Central Committee. This unusual enemy of the Soviets must get back on its feet before the Soviets or the southern Remnants take it all way.The American People's Commonwealth is the work of Noam Chomsky and Bernie Sanders. Initially the movement in the now-APC wasn't unified. Sanders called on Chomsky to unite the country, which he did. By 1990 the "revolution" was complete. Sanders brought moderates together with the far left, which is where the Old Guard, former supporters of Bernie, comes from. When the Central Committee, home base of the New Guard, gained more power and Chomsky had failed to implement his promised reforms, Bernie backed down from national politics. He retired to Vermont, only to become Governor later on when appointed by his predecessor and loyal to the state trade councils, long after the murder of his family.

• Civil War: There are a couple of times this can happen, depending on the path in the focus tree taken:
  • Sam Webb and his Communist Party of the APC will join up with the New Guard and rebel if Chomsky wins the power struggle and dismantles the Central Committee.
  • Moderates and supporters of Bernie Sanders in New England, New York, and Lower Michigan can split from the Commonwealth in opposition to the increasingly authoritarian New Guard if the Central Committee impeaches and removes Chomsky from office.
• Chummy Commies: The American People's Commonwealth under Noam Chomsky completely rejects the Soviet version of communism and tries to build a post-capitalist society on their own, emphasizing the democratic and humanistic aspects of socialism. While the APC government has many internal problems of their own and is largely dysfunctional, it can maintain libertarian socialist ideals in the face of challenges, going as far as establishing direct democracy and abolishing the wage system.
• Dirty Commies: While the leadership of the APC include some communists, the general attitude towards communists is of distrust. The APC dislike the Soviet Union as they view it as counterrevolutionary and authoritarian. Furthermore, through certain player choices, the communists led by Sam Webb will break off with the coalition and join up with the New Guard in their civil war against Chomsky.
• We ARE Struggling Together: The American People's Commonwealth was created by a coalition of libertarian socialists, Soviet-style authoritarians, social democrats and anarchists. As a result their government is more concerned with internal squabbles than getting anything done. This will often boil over into outright civil war depending on the path taken
• Red Scare: The Old Guard of the APC (as well as most other Revolutionary Socialist states and parties) may be on the left, but are also anti-Soviet. They view the Soviet form of communism and socialism go against the revolutionary principles of Marx, and are therefore not true socialists.

The first and only President of the American People's Commonwealth, Noam Chomsky originally found his fame in two vastly different fields - linguistics and social activism. Chomsky, a prominent Anarcho-Syndicalist activist during the tumultuous 60s, became of one of the most vocal supporters of the big-tent socialist American Labor Party. When Ronald Reagan dissolved the United States, leaders and organizers such as Chomsky and Bernie Sanders founded the American People's Commonwealth in Philadelphia. The Party of Labor and reformist organizations fell to Chomsky's Industrial Workers of the World, and he was soon elected provisional president of a new revolutionary nation. After a three-year constitutional convention finally elapsed, the IWW centralized its power, but faced considerable intra-party deadlock. Chomsky found himself at the whim of international activists like Germaine Greer, who wished to transform the nation into the catalyst of worldwide revolutionary socialism, but also the New Guard and their political organ, the Central Committee. The New Guard, filled with young, pragmatic socialists, opposed Chomsky and his idealistic anarchism at every turn, but with Chomsky's influence in state governorships and the executive branch, neither could gain the upper hand. Now, even old allies like Bernie Sanders have abandoned Chomsky's anarchist movement in favor of true democratic socialism, and the dream of a peaceful American North-East with him at the helm is no closer to fruition.

Noam Chomsky is the current president of the American People's Commonwealth. He wishes for a Anarcho-Syndicalist nation to truly free the American people, but is constantly thwarted by the New Guard of the Central Committee. However with his health deteriorating, Noam needs a good reason to achieve his goals, but such an event could be his demise.

• Historical Badass Upgrade: Chomsky is a historian, philosopher, and linguist professor at MIT and the University of Arizona. He is also a prominent Libertarian Socialist, critical of Neo-Liberalism, Imperialism, and Capitalism. In Red World, he is now President of the APC, and actively works to thwart the Central Committee's attempts to centralize power form themselves.

• Popularity Power: Spinrad not being too delved into politics is still able to rise as one of the potential candidates to succeed Chomsky, thanks to his skyrocketing position as a populist claiming that he represents the people moreso than the other candidates.

The Central Committee is the highest legislative body of the American People's Commonwealth.A major political institution in the Commonwealth, its members appointed by the Trade Councils. The Committee's purpose, in theory, is to serve as the primary advisors of the President, as well as ensure the Head of State doesn't abuse their power thanks to the Committee's ability to impeach them. However, this system has not worked so well in practice.The Central Committee – in its current state – is controlled by the New Guard, a group of young and talented, albeit power-hungry and ruthless politicians, who wish to turn the APC into a more centralized, authoritarian socialist state. Their efforts are continuously blocked by President Noam Chomsky, who is fundamentally opposed to their ideas. The Committee wishes to impeach Chomsky, but is currently unable to do so, as his popularity among the governors and Trade Councils means doing so would be political suicide. This conflict leaves the APC in a state of constant political deadlock, with neither faction able to pass their desired reforms.

• Arch-Nemesis: Chomsky and the Central Committee have little love for one another. The Committee is secretly plotting to impeach Chomsky by fabricating a scandal, while Chomsky is actively working to diminish the Committee's power in favour of the other trade councils.

The leader of the Technocratic Council who has chosen to side with Chomsky's Commonwealth as a small faction of the Central Committee. He's not too keen on Chomsky's Libertarian policies and will expose Chomsky if a scandal is fabricated against him, but is still willing to ally with him regardless of his twisted Oligarchic view of how Socialism should be run.

Although normally Technocracy would be against economic leanings, but Gates and his ideology Gatesism is a form of Socialist Technocracy where socialist intellectuals should run the Commonwealth instead of Unions, Councils or Committees.
• Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman: In real life, Bill Gates is famous for co-founding Microsoft and being one of the richest individuals in the world. In RW, he is the leader of a technocratic faction within the Central Committee and can become the undisputed leader of the American People's Commonwealth, if not the entirety of the United States.
• The Purge: Gates will purge the moderates throughout the Commonwealth if he consolidates power.

Automotive Council

The Automotive Council is one of the trade councils, whose members are appointed by the state governors to manage the Commonwealth's economy. If the player goes down the Bernie path, but chooses to have Bill Gates release the secret documents before the inauguration, Sanders will be executed, and Chomsky will appoint the Automotive Council as the executive. This allows the player to go through the Detroit Constitution focus tree branch.

• Government Conspiracy: Subverted. The Automotive Council are the only council that are not responsible for conspiring the potential murder of thousands of politicians opposed to Sanders for challenging Chomsky. The military see this as a justification to give them power.

Grand Trade Council

Bernie Sanders

Bernard "Bernie" Sanders was born into poverty in Brooklyn. He was a prominent activist for many leftist and egalitarian ideas, married a woman named Jane Driscoll and had three children, but everything changed for Sanders when the United States was officially dissolved by President Reagan. Working with Noam Chomsky, Sanders helped establish a Revolutionary Socialist state in Northeastern America, forming the American People's Commonwealth. But, on the 8th of March 1990, when Sanders was visiting Portugal, tragedy struck. The Central Committee-aligned Vermont governor waged a brutal crackdown on all who opposed him within his state without the approval of Philadelphia's government, leading to the horrible murder of Bernie's entire family. Since then, he has resented the Central Committee and vowed to never let such terror hurt anybody ever again.

The most influential communist in the Commonwealth, Sam Webb and the CPAPC are currently in an uneasy coalition with the Noam Chomsky and the IWW. He'll start a civil war against Chomsky if the Central Committee is disbanded.

• Freudian Excuse: In the American People's Commonwealth Bernie Sanders would be probably a sincere democratic socialist, it this wasn't for an incident when his entire family was killed by Radical Socialist Vermont's governal forces. Since then, even if Sanders still believes in ideals of socialism and democracy deep inside his heart, he will make sure that everyone to blame for crimes and atrocities against the American people won't be left unpunished...
• Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Bernie Sanders will declare war on the American Republic the second he gets into office, which can doom the Commonwealth as their military is not large enough to take on the AR at that point.
• Off with His Head!: If he gets into power, he presumably spends most of his time doing this to his enemies.
• Well-Intentioned Extremist: Enacts a plan of a totalitarian government and purges dissidents members of the APC, but he does so with the intention of improving the lives of the citizenship and enacting vengeance against those who have wronged the country.

Initially a one-party state under the Republican Party, the American Republic is currently a dominant-party state where the Republican Party, thanks to a cult of personality surrounding the late President Bush, consistently wins both the presidential and congressional elections. However, the Republic continues to be unrecognized by many nations, and with economic issues compounded by the flight of business executives to Canada and the United Kingdom having plagued the 2000s decade, incumbent President Donald Rumsfeld faces a great challenge to his leadership from not just the charismatic Jeb Bush, son of the late President, but also from opposition candidates such as Robert Bentley of the moderate conservative Independence Union and David Duke of the fascist National Renewal Party. The future of not only the Republic, but the entire North American continent holds in the balance as the 2010 elections inch closer.

• Sword of Damocles: The reason why the APC didn't immediately seize Washington D.C. and put an end to the remnants during the Great American Collapse is because of the entire southern military being at George H.W. Bush's disposal due to their loyalty to him. Attempting an invasion of D.C. would only invite the young nation retaliation from the South.
• Take a Third Option: Instead of pursuing either a pro-corporate or pro-worker economic policy, a Republican president can choose to borrow Centrist ideas on economics. This can end up paying better in the long run when America is reunified.
• Undying Loyalty: The American Republic being based in and controlling the Deep South is the result of this. Despite the southern states gaining independence when Ronald Reagan dissolves the US, the southern governors were still loyal to Vice President Bush and declared their support for him. In the end, Bush relocates the remains of the US government to Atlanta and urges all his loyalists to flee southward.
• Vestigial Empire: The United States has gone from a military and economic powerhouse that acted as the bastion of democracy in the West to a small republic in the American South barely clinging onto life whose economy has stagnated.

Once a humble national security advisor in the Reagan and then Bush administrations, Donald Rumsfeld first rose to prominence in the American Republic with his election as Vice President to George Bush in 1994. Moderate conservatives under the banner of the Independence Union and Democratic Party remnants failed to defeat the ticket, and together, Bush and Rumsfeld perfected the authoritarian nationalist system that has now led to complete Republican political dominance. Bush, however, did not follow interventionism as staunchly as his vice president, and the two began to spar over America's role in the world - Rumsfeld desired intervention in the world's conflicts, even with only America's South in their control, while President Bush desired economic stability above all. When Bush died of a heart attack in 2001, Rumsfeld soon succeeded him as president, and it is said that the rally-round-the-flag effect that occurred saved his political career. After Rumsfeld defeated George Bush Jr. in the primaries, he easily bested the Democratic Party remnants and the Independence Union, securing further control for the Republican Party. Throughout his 8-year term, Rumsfeld has pursued global interventionism, but has been criticized for failing to heal the economic collapse facing the nation since the so-called Flight of the Executives. His disastrous intervention in Yemen, which established an unstable conservative government has shattered his standing among much of the Bush Cult, and although he remains popular, Rumsfeld does not enjoy nearly the support as the elder Bush. President Rumsfeld will run again in 2010 according to all known metrics, but it is unsure if the Republicans will allow him and his hawkish agenda to survive the next election.

California, Washington and Oregon became independent nations after the dissolution of the USA, but a significant portion of their legislatures were dominated by the CPUSA, after state elections during the 1980s. This meant that one by one, the three states were thrown into economic and political chaos as gridlock consumed them. In California, Jerry Brown resigned just weeks into his Presidency of California due to pressure from communist and socialist parties, who had briefly formed a united front. This meant that the far left had a majority in the Californian assembly (combined the communists and revsocs dominated). With this immense power and the communist Speaker of the Assembly, they refused to swear in the Vice President (former Lieutenant Governor) as Brown's successor. Subsequently a group of democratic loyalists tried to overthrow the assembly and arrest communist party members, but it backfired when the people of Sacramento (at the time the seat of the assembly) rose up against the clique. The coup was stopped and the united front used it as a pretense to assume total control. The rest of the assembly had limited constitutional powers to stop the appointment of Angela Davis as the new President of California, thus she was sworn in a day after the attempted coup. Things played out similarly in Washington and Oregon, but since they had communist majorities with Democratic governors, both states had voted for Davis in the 1984 election.Once Davis had become President, the legislatures took action and forced the respective Presidents of Oregon and Washington to resign. Because of this, far less blood was shed in Washington and Oregon, as the communists simply took the executive branch. However, once Davis became President, the united front collapsed and the Assembly was once again thrown into chaos. With support from part of the military who had sworn allegiance to the communists after their historic win, Davis purged the revolutionary socialists and forced many into exile. Because of this, the following week became known as the Californian Red Terror. Davis had begun to purge the entire Assembly until the Communists held every single seat; for those who wouldn't budge under manipulations she would use her influence in the military and police to condemn them in a mock trial. At the end of the Red Terror she proclaimed the Californian People's Republic, which resulted in numerous rebellions across the country, which were relatively quickly put down. Not long after, Washington and Oregon followed suit and formed the Washington People's Republic and the Oregon People's Republic.The entire West Coast now consisted of the three People's Republics and only a few days later, they held a summit to unite under the Union of American People's Republics with Davis as President and follow the same system as the USSR with the country being a federation of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The deeply polarizing but highly influential Angela Davis has a long history of labor and civil rights activism. She was one of the closest allies of Communist Party USA General Secretary Gus Hall, even running on his ticket for president in 1980. In the next election Hall stepped aside and allowed Davis to run for president in her own right, sweeping the West Coast and securing the greatest electoral victory in the party’s history. When the beloved General Secretary was assassinated the following year, Davis was quick to marginalize her rivals and secure her position as Hall’s successor. As tensions rose following decades of civil unrest, President Ronald Reagan was forced to dissolve the United States in 1987. The CPUSA already held immense influence in the West and Davis used this power to remove her political rivals, eventually forming the Union of American People’s Republics with herself as paramount leader. Further expansion was prevented by hostile right-wing forces to the east, but Davis cemented her legitimacy in the eyes of most of the world by visiting the Soviet Union in 1988. At home her purges continued, culminating in the 1993 Sacramento Massacre where Davis was accused of killing thousands of dissidents. This left a deep division in the party, as Davis grew increasingly hostile to Soviet influence while the economy fell into a depression. Now her control of the party is tenuous, and her personally progressive stances and activist past has created conflict with her expected role as a supporter of Soviet hegemony.

Eventually, a group of democrats form the Popular Front and occupy Leavenworth, in hopes of gaining leverage in obtaining concessions from the UAPR leadership. When the demands are refused, Cascadia begins a full scale rebellion.

Guiding the campaigns of the Democratic Coalition across the country through "Runners for Clark", Hammons brought the party great victories in local and congressional elections, providing a decentralized alternative to local populations fearful of government overreach in their own affairs. When Clark expressed his desire not to seek re-election as President in 2007, Hammons was seen as the likely successor, and hastily maneuvered his way through the party leadership process. Despite the Democratic Coalition's landslide victory in 2007, the party remains deeply fractured between conservative and liberal wings, and Hammons has been categorized as someone who has only served to exacerbate tensions by standing firmly in the middle. Melissa Hortman was first elected to the House of Representatives of the Great Lakes Confederation in 2001, the same year Paul Wellstone won a landslide victory on a pledge to establish a progressive Republic. She soon become a brash advocate for women's rights, progressivism, and Wellstone's signature campaign promise - a centralized republic with clear protections for civil rights. In 2005, Hortman was originally expected to run for a third term, and secure herself as a prominent representative, but instead, she decided to run for President. Wellstone had refused to run a second term, citing concerns over multiple sclerosis, and the party scrambled to find new candidates. When expected frontrunner Tom Vilsack was damaged by Wellstone publicly condemning his moderate views and inability to appeal to minority, progressive voters, the nomination process was shaken even more. Hortman, a dark-horse candidate, secured the nomination after 8 grueling rounds of convention voting. She won in 2005 by a clear majority and was elected again in 2009 by a slimmer one. Her unexpected dominance over the political system has led to outcry from nationalist groups, who decry her as an authoritarian, but also progressive groups within her own party, who label her a member of a new political establishment.

Originally a brash representative in the House who championed progressive policies, she chose to run for President in 2005 following her predecessor's refusal at a second term and won with a clear majority. Hundreds of thousands worship the fascist systems of the Northwest, praising the liberation of white Americans, but few of them mention Harold Covington, the Northwest's liberator, in anything but a negative light. Following disbarment from the army and deportation from Rhodesia, his adopted white homeland, Harold Covington founded the idea of the Northwest Territorial Imperative, a white nationalist homeland in the American northwest. The ideal was supported by numerous organizations across the region, the most powerful being Richard Butler's Aryan Nations and Robert Jay Matthews' The Order. Following the Great Collapse of 1987, Covington, Butler, and Matthews were among the first to establish a legitimate white nationalist government in the region, its seat in Montana. The father of the Imperative, Covington, became the first leader of Montana, and thousands of white nationalists flocked to a new homeland for their endangered people. Following the death of Jay Matthews in late 1989 in his quest to secure Western Cascadia and fully unify the Imperative, many began to point fingers at Covington for the loss, and his popularity dwindled. By the mid-1990s, Covington was forced to expel prominent leaders such as his premier opponent, William Luther Pierce, and strengthen his alliance with Aryan Nations and nationalist militias to compensate, actions that sparked mass anger among hardline fascists. Eventually, he faced a hardline political revolution by Richard Spencer, a charismatic young officer who commandeered a mutiny in Spokane, Washington, and lost most of his territory and support in the resulting carnage. With Richard Butler dead in 2004 and militias taking an even more powerful role as an obese Covington struggles with his health, many do not believe the pragmatic rule of Covington's White Freedom Alliance to last through the next decade.

The Union of Lincoln is a country in Northeastern America. It borders Montana, Utah, and the UAPR. Ironically, despite being named after the emancipator, Abraham Lincoln, the Union of Lincoln is an isolationist, white ethnosocialist homeland led by the Neo-Nazi Richard Spencer.

• Asshole Victim: Should they get conquered (which they will), nobody is going to be missing them any time soon.
• Arch-Enemy: The Union of Lincoln and Montana both hate each other. The Union has no economy and has difficultly equipping a single division, while the under-equipped Montanan militias are more occupied squabbling between themselves, so nothing comes out of it.
• Bullying a Dragon: The Union of Lincoln occupies a portion of Cascadia despite being woefully weak compared to the UAPR. The only thing that protects it from invasion is the disagreements between the Cascadian SSR and the Party bigwigs in Los Angeles.
• Butt-Monkey: The Union of Lincoln starts out with nothing but a single civilian factory. Even if the industry tree is rushed to build a single military factory, by that time the UAPR has already come knocking. Not only that, but if Cascadia wins the UAPR civil war, it will also invade the Union of Lincoln.
• Commie Nazis: The Union of Lincoln is one of the few National Bolsheveik states in the world at the start of the game, aside from Gaddafi's Arab Islamic Republic. In short, their political system is "Socialism for White people only."
• Irony: The country named after Abraham Lincoln is an isolationist Neo-Nazi state that follows the National Bolshevik ideology.
• Last of His Kind: In many playthroughs, the Union of Lincoln is usually the last National Bolshevik nation left in the world. This doesn't last, as the UAPR is typically not far from invading. If either Gaddafi wins the Libyan Civil War or Bernie Sanders becomes president of the Commonwealth and proclaims the Greater American Union, this trope is averted.
• Zero-Effort Boss: The Union of Lincoln can barely equip a single division. Any war against it will be swift and quick.

Richard Spencer

In only twenty years, Richard Spencer has risen from a young university student to one of the most beloved and powerful men among the American far-right. Spencer was already a staunch nationalist conservative during his stay in the University of Virginia, where he continually bucked the societal trends of the People's Commonwealth. Spencer, discontent with socialist programs, left university life in 2001 to pursue a political career in right-wing politics. There, in the Virginia political scene, he connected with the National Alliance, one of the most prominent far-right terrorist organizations in the American People's Commonwealth following their expulsion from Great Falls, Montana. Anti-Covington political figures there instructed Spencer in the ways of revolutionary, hardline Neo-Nazism, contributing to the radicalization of his already conservative views. Following the death of Pierce, the Alliance's leader, in mid-2002, Spencer journeyed to Montana, where he joined dissident groups within Covington's patchwork coalition. Following his own expulsion in 2003, Spencer, who had already built up a minor coalition of his own, took his militia group and seized the city of Spokane, as far from Great Falls as could be, in order to start a true political revolution. Although he expected little to follow his revolt, built around his own bizarre "White emancipationist" political views, thousands rallied to the young officer's banner, under a staunch anti-capitalist, anti-communist, and white supremacist program. After a long and bloody conflict, Spencer's Union finally has independence, although the unity of his own patchwork coalition remains to be seen.

Richard Spencer is a white nationalist and founder the Union of Lincoln, which he describes as a safe haven for whites.

• Butt-Monkey: Texas can't catch a break at all. After gaining independence, Mexico immediately occupied their southernmost part without much resistance. Following the 2010 Elections, their entire senate is killed in a brazen pro-American Republic terrorist attack that utterly decimates the Texan government. Not long after this, the American Republic will send an ultimatum to either become an American state or a puppet republic. The A.I. will reject the ultimatum most of the time, and the resulting war is almost always a one-sided Curb-Stomp Battle.
• Mexico Called; They Want Texas Back: Mexico took advantage of the turmoil during the Great American Collapse and reclaimed southern Texas and part of New Mexico.
• Puppet State: If the American Republic decides to puppet Texas following the Texan Troubles instead of making them a state again. Some in the American Republic are uneasy with this arrangement, but it will appease the Texans wanting independence.
• Satellite Character: Very little information is given about Texas apart from its complicated relationship with their American and Mexican neighbors.

Rick Perry

Rick Perry was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1984, and was one of the first state representatives to call for an independent Republic of Texas in the wake of the Great American Collapse in 1987. A staunch Texan nationalist, he supported harsher measures against the agitation of American loyalists, and would personally fly several airlift missions during the Mexican-Texan War. In the ever-changing political landscape of independent Texas, Perry aligned with the majority of the Democratic Party in drafting a constitution for the newly independent country. He then served as Minister of Defense under President Lloyd Bentsen, his service in the war making him the clear choice to rebuild the Texan military. However, internal divisions within the Democratic Party would force Perry out of power for nearly a decade, and he spent most of the nineties working in the energy industry. He wouldn’t return to the political scene until 2000, when President Kay Hutchinson signed a controversial trade agreement with the American Republic. Organizing the opposition to the continuing AR occupation of eastern Texas, Perry united Texan nationalists from both parties into the One Republic movement, the electoral vehicle for his 2001 presidential campaign. He won the election in a landslide and transformed One Republic into an official party which has dominated the political scene ever since. Perry’s two non-consecutive terms, interrupted only by the presidency of his protege David Dewhurst, have been dominated by security issues and the continued conflict with American loyalists. His administration established the Texas Enterprise Fund to funnell oil revenues towards economic expansion, and brought the country into the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, turning Texas into one of the world’s leading oil producers.

• Spared by the Adaptation: Jones doesn't end up leading his People's Temple to Jonestown, where IRL he persuaded and even forced his followers to consume poison-laced Flavor-aid. Instead, he ends up in Texas as the leader of the local Communist Party.

The descendant of a Mormon pioneer, Mike Leavitt served as a businessman and political advisor to his father, a state senator, before entering politics as a presidential nominee. Since he first ran for political office in 1992 as a Republican, President Mike Leavitt has lost as many presidential primaries as he has won, with challenges in '92 and '96 against John Huntsman Sr. and Orrin Hatch, respectively, both fizzling out before he won his first election in 2004. Following the popular Hatch's decision not to run again, Leavitt triumphed against a crowded field of candidates, and has now overseen record economic growth in the hermit republic and has successfully defended against aggression from both the north and west. Fortunately for his presidential aspirations, post-collapse Utah has also seen the infiltration and collapse of the Utah Democratic Party in the wake of a LaRouchite takeover. As Orrin Hatch established United Utah, a coalition against all forms of socialist and nationalist subversion, former Democrats chief among them, Leavitt became one of its founding and most influential members. Although they remain tense, Leavitt has continued Hatch's concilatory policies towards the Church of Latter Day Saints. Many fear that the president in Salt Lake City is controlled by a different president - the one of the Mormon church. As future elections approach, United Utah seems very likely to secure victory, but many in the party leadership have grown fearful of LDS President Thomas Monson's influence over Leavitt. Whether he can keep his position remains to be seen.

Harry Mitchell was Mayor of Tempe, Arizona from 1978 until 1992, with a brief gap in 1988 during the Admiralty Incident. Using this as a springboard to propel his political career further, he sought the Social Renewal Party nomination in 1997, but failed to win any significant number of votes outside his home city. However, his luck would turn around in 2001 when the Social Renewal and Democratic Union parties merged to create the Social Union. Supporters of his 1997 campaign turned out in huge numbers to convince the rest of the country that this time Mitchell could unite them all. At the time, Arizona was a deeply divided nation, shattered by corruption revelations and the flight of emigrants from every direction. By mid 2001, Mitchell had secured the nomination and in November he became President of Arizona. Since inauguration in 2002 his programs of moderate welfare expansion, an enormous infrastructure endeavour and an unprecedented fight against corruption have led to victories for the Social Union in every single national election. While there are no term limits in Arizona, Mitchell seems ready to retire in time for the 2013 election, and his successor may not be so popular.
