Flag of the Commonwealth of Britain
Flag of the British Socialist Republic
Flag of Britain (Phoenix Front)
Official Name: United Kingdom of Great Britain, United Kingdom (Has Ulster)

Revolutionary Socialist: British Socialist Republic (Revolutionary Socialist), English Commonwealth (England Revolutionary Socialist)

Ideology: Owenismnote
The United Kingdom is seen by many as the last bastion of democracy in Europe. In lengthy talks with the Irish government, both sides agreed in the late 1980s to put aside their differences and create a unity government in Northern Ireland, allowing Britain to divert its political power to halting revolution. In the decades since, tensions in the Kingdom are boiling over, with Prime Minister David Owen seen as a threat to the survival of the European Union and the Soviet world order. Will the United Kingdom continue on its path of isolation and stability, or will a strong leader take charge?
  • Disaster Democracy: After August to the Queen at least. While some would argue that the none stop rule of Sir David Owen is undemocratic and should resign, many view him as the greatest PM in modern history.
  • Last of His Kind: Britain is viewed as the last bastion of Democracy in Europe.

    Social Democratic Party
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adc14b01_7cd3_4819_b511_b499500b0e74.png
The Social Democrats have been in power since 1989. Formed as Labour was taken over by the Hard-Left Bennite faction and then reformed by David Owen after most of the party fusioned with the Liberals, the Social Democrats have since enjoyed widespread political success under Owen, whose legacy of mild welfarism they seek to uphold with another electoral win under their belt.

David Owen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_david_owen.png
Role: Head of State
Ideology: Owenismnote
In-Game Biography: Click to Show
David Owen is the second longest serving Prime Minister in British history. His rise to power began with the Limehouse Declaration of 1984 when he, alongside future Deputy Prime Minister Shirley Williams, former European Commissioner Roy Jenkins, and MP Bill Rodgers split from the Labour Party. The so-called “Gang of Four” formed the Social Democratic Party with the intention of unseating the Labour opposition of Tony Benn. This was not to be, and the SDP soon merged with the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats. Those who opposed this union followed Owen into a reformed SDP, but it achieved little success at first. Callaghan would be defeated by the Conservative Margaret Thatcher in 1984, but her government proved even less popular. It was only after the miscalculated election of 1989 that Owen rose to prominence. His campaign in the wake of the fall of democracy in Europe was unprecedented. He called for the abandonment of any ties between the UK and the former US, instead supporting closer ties, cooperation and peace with Ireland. On election night, the whole nation was shocked by Owen’s victory, aided in no small part by the fall of the Labour Party. His two decades in power have been times of both praise and criticism. He helped bring peace to Northern Ireland by forming the unity government in Ulster, but his time in power has seen the UK become increasingly isolated from the world. Though numerous achievements have been made, he has sometimes been forced into uncomfortable compromises with both the Labour Party and the British National Party. But through it all, Owen has remained one of the most popular Prime Ministers in modern history, and he has given no sign that he intends to step down any time soon.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: David Owen will be shot at around August 2010 before the game really takes off
  • Who Shot JFK?: Nobody knows who kills the PM but Marxists are suspected
  • Plot-Triggering Death: His death opens up a lot of the focus tree
  • Landslide Election: Several elections have resulted in landslides for the SDP. His popularity has sharply plummeted since then, however.

Shirley Williams

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_shirley_williams.png
Role: Head of State (Owens Assassinated), (2011 Social Democrats Election - William Re-Elected)
Ideology: Owenismnote
Shirley Williams was part of the original "Gang of Four" who left the Labor Party in protest of the Tony Benn’s left-wing opposition to the Thatcher government. Alongside future Prime Minister David Owen and other defecting Members of Parliament she founded the Social Democratic Party in 1984. Later that year she became the first Social Democrat elected to parliament after winning the Crosby by-election. The SDP formed an alliance with the Liberal Party and eventually the two voted to merge into a new party, the Liberal Democrats. Williams supported the merge however Owen opposed it, recreating the Social Democrats and taking most of the moderate Labor vote with him. In 1989 Owen's SDP defeated the Tories and the unpopular Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who was running for a second term. The Social Democrats formed a coalition government with Labour as the junior member and Owen personally invited Williams to cross the floor and join the government, which she graciously, but anxiously, did. She served first as Chancellor and then Deputy Prime Minister, before succeeding David Owen in August 2010 after his shocking assassination. Shirley Williams was tasked by the Queen to form a government in her name, however the two women would soon fall out.
  • Breaking the Glass Ceiling: When Owen dies she will be Britain’s first Female Prime Minister.
  • Number Two: Deputy Prime Minister to David Owen since the election victory in 1989. She will succeed him uncontested in August.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Even though Williams can lead Britain into the next seven elections and implement much needed centre reforms throughout the country, such as erecting a statue of Owen and expanding TRIDENT, Owen will always be more fondly remembered.

However, as a recovering alcoholic, his critics worry that a position of power may cause a relapse.

    Independent Labour Party

The Independent Labour Party hasn’t been in power since the mid 30s. Formed prior to the mainstream Labour Party, the ILP today represents the furthest left of the democratic political spectrum, with radical ideas for reshaping British politics at home and abroad. Champions of the Republican cause, the ILP has promised a referendum on the British monarchy, as well as restoring the NHS.

Jeremy Corbyn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_jeremy_corbyn.png
Revolutionary Socialist
Role: Head of State (Snap Election - Independent Labour Elected), (2018 Independent Labour Election - Corbyn Re-Elected)
Ideology: European Moderate Socialismnote , Orthodox Leninismnote  (Revolutionary Socialist path)
The current leader of independent Labour is a strong republican and is a revolutionary Socialist. He promises a monarchy referendum and a restructuring of the NHS.
  • Chummy Commies: Just like OTL, Corbyn is thought to have Communist sympathies, only cemented more in Red World with a potential tour of Europe.
  • Commie Land: If elected he can potentially be removed by the Galloway extremist faction of his own party.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: His policies are far from mainstream.
  • Demoted to Extra: From the leader of the real Labour Party to a small fringe group.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: If he fails to gain power by 2018, Diane Abbott and Ken Loach will both attempt to coup him.
  • Good All Along: The political establishment all believe Corbyn to hold communist sympathies, and fear that if he gains power it will cause a socialist revolution. He is entirely dedicated to democracy, and though him gaining power can lead to a socialist revolution, he's not the one who causes it, and in fact gets tried for treason by the socialists for not being revolutionary enough.
  • Landslide Election: The republic referendum won’t even be close, and result in an overwhelming Republican landslide.
  • President Evil: After his tour of European cities, other mainstream parties will denounce him as evil and communist which may not be too far from the truth.
  • Red Scare: After Owen’s murder by communists, people are terrified of Communists and Corbyn does nothing to ease these fears.
  • Spark of the Rebellion: Jeremy Corbyn can take power and turn Britain his own Trotskyist state.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: His reforms are very radical.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: Depending on how he handles his tenure as Prime Minister goes, he will most likely be removed by extremists.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Regardless of your opinions on Corbyn he doesn’t have bad intentions. But he's a staunch Republican and will use the Queen’s coup on parliament to garner Republican support.

Diane Abbott

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_diane_abbott.png

Role: Head of State (Socialists abolish the Monarchy), (1st Workers' Congress Election - Galloway Elected), (Galloway Election - Galloway Re-Elected)
Ideology: Trotskyismnote

  • Historical Hero Upgrade: Downplayed. The real George Galloway slowly developed reactionary policies similar to National Bolshevism due to his antisemitic behavior, the prevalence of transphobia in British society, exposure to various pro-Putin viewpoints and individuals, as well as due to his work with the socially reactionary Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist), by contrast in-game Galloway can lead a somewhat benevolent isolationist socialist state. However, Galloway can also be played as a ruthless expansionist spreading the Revolution as far as possible and the game acknowledges Galloway's antisemitism and some of his more problematic ideas and allows the player to replace him with someone less socially reactionary.

    Communist Party of Great Britain
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/185px_logo_of_the_communist_party_of_britainsvg.png
A pro-Soviet party, the CPGB is working to turn the United Kingdom into a Leninist state. They are considered a high threat to British democracy.
  • Dirty Commies: The members of the CPGB are hardcore followers of communism, and will stop at nothing to create a Soviet-style regime.
    • While not confirmed, at least as of yet, it is suspected they, possibly in conjunction with Soviet agents, are behind the assassination of PM David Owen.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: In the real world the CPGB dissolved with the collapse of the Soviet Union and it's sucessor organization the Communist Party of Britain isn't even the most hardline element of the British Marxist-Leninist left, being willing to work with Labour and support a peaceful shift to socialism. Here, they are ruthless Communists willing to violently seize power and potentially execute the entire Royal family to prevent them from gaining support abroad. Justified however in that the Soviet Union is still around and is considerably more hardline than OTL, which may influence more hardline voices within Western Communist parties.
  • Ruling Family Massacre: If the Communist path of the focus tree is taken, the CPB will begin a revolution, with its climax being the storming of Buckingham Palace. Elizabeth II and other family members are captured, and there is a choice to banish them from Britain, or have them all executed to prevent any attempts for them to build support abroad and return to reclaim power.

Robert Griffiths

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rgriffiths.png
Role: Head of State (Communists storm Buckingham Palace)
Ideology: Neocommunismnote
Originally from Wales, Griffiths has been a long time follower of socialism. His views soon became more radical, and he joined the Communist Party during the early 80s. Following the dissolution of the United States, and the fall of Western Europe to Soviet influence, Griffiths has worked to have Britain follow suit and embrace communism as well. However, the several obstacles remain in his way, including the Royal Family's ambition for power, and the British people remaining strong proponents to democracy.

Elizabeth II

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_elizabeth_second.png
Role: Head of State (Let in the Buckingham Palace)
Ideology: Absolute Monarchynote
After the Assassination of Prime Minister Owen, the Queen will refuse to let Britain fall into political chaos. She, Prince Charles and various other lords will attempt to storm parliament. If successful she will become the greatest British monarch in its history, if not she will become the laughing stock of Britain and if Corbyn reaches power, will be dethroned. She will inevitably pass on 12 February 2018.
  • Cult of Personality: Once secure in her position as the absolute Queen of the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II will build a cult of personality around herself by establishing royal holidays, expanding her powers and reforming the Empire by re-establishing old titles and conquering foreign lands.
  • Emergency Authority: With weakened democracy the Queen can grant herself extra powers.
  • The Good King: This to some. Whilst Republicans are purged from Britain, her actions are nothing short of tyrannical.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: In real life, she has never expressed interest in dissolving the House of Commons, becoming an absolute monarch, disappearing left wing politicians, or reconquering the British Empire.
  • Politically-Active Princess: Will threaten all political parties if the coup succeeds.
  • Removing the Rival: Many lefties vanish under Queen Liz.

Charles III

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_charles_third.png
Role: Head of State (Elizabeth II passes away)
Ideology: Absolute Monarchynote
Prince Charles, eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II, is the expected successor to his mother and has been for 58 years. Charles III succeeds his mother to the throne 2018 and depending on how the coup went, will make or break him.Though his ex-wife of good terms dies earlier in the year, he will give blessing to William and Kate’s wedding.
  • Emperor Scientist: IRL Charles is fond of the environment and and big preservationist. In Red World he is implied to have more of a passion by the BNP.
  • The Good King: His eulogy states that he leaves behind a great, but brief (4 years) legacy, regardless of how much power he holds.
  • Puppet King: If his mother’s coup fails, he will be on best behaviour throughout his reign.

William V

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_william_fifth.png
Role: Head of State (Charles III passes away)
Ideology: Absolute Monarchynote
Despite sustaining massive injuries in the car crash that killed his mother, William will engage and marry Kate Middleton and become King in 2022. However he can alternatively be shot in a communist coup.

Andrew I

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_andrew_first.png
Role: Head of State (Prince Andrew crowned)
Ideology: Absolute Monarchynote
Prince Andrew, Duke of York is the Second son of Queen Elizabeth and if the Communists seize power and execute the royal family, he can be rescued and escorted to Canada and made King in Exile. If the British nobles deem him too controversial, he can be passed aside for his younger brother. His daughters are also alive.
  • Ascended Extra: From a Duke to a King.
  • The Leader: Of the remnants of the United Kingdom and former Commonwealth.
  • Offered the Crown: Since he is the next in line to the British crown, he is offered the throne, but can be overlooked for his brother.
  • Rightful King Returns: If a foreign power invades and puppets Britain, Andrew will be crowned as King Edward IX.
  • Unexpected Successor: The royal executions are very unexpected.

Edward IX

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_edward_nineth.png
Role: Head of State (Prince Edward crowned)
Ideology: Absolute Monarchynote
Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex is the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth and if the Communists seize power and execute the royal family, he, his wife Sophie and children, can be rescued and escorted to Canada. If the British nobles deem Prince Andrew too controversial, he can be crowned King.
  • Ascended Extra: From an Earl to a King.
  • The Good King: Viewed as this by many exiled elites in comparison to his elder brother and the potentially stained reputation of his mother.
  • Offered the Crown: Since he is charismatic, has a surviving family and is uncontroversial, Prince Edward can be given the crown if his eldest surviving brother Andrew is forced aside, even though he is Queen Elizabeth's youngest son.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Unlike his elder brother Andrew, Edward is viewed as a more suitable figure by the exiled British Elite.
  • Rightful King Returns: If a foreign power invades and puppets Britain, Edward will be crowned regardless.
  • Unexpected Successor: As the youngest son, Edward never expects himself to succeed his mother unless his elder brothers gives way.

Role: Head of State (Right-Wing General Election - Phoenix Front Elected)
Ideology: National Socialismnote
A former front Bencher of the Conservative Party. She split off and formed her own Nazi Party.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: Theresa May is a rather disliked politician in real life, but she's not literally a Nazi who bombed parliament and created concentration camps.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Theresa May’s maiden name was Brasier. The idea of making her an unmarried Christian Nationalist, even at the start, could just be a way of distinguishing her Nazi ideology in RW from her OTL counterpart.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's difficult to talk about Theresa Brasier without revealing that she turns Britain into a Nazi dictatorship if she gains power.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Britain under Brasier and the Phoenix Front is almost identical to Britain under the Norsefire Party in V for Vendetta, including both government's adherence to a brand of Christian Fascism and their extermination of undesirable citizens

  • Western Terrorists: For nearly three decades, Ulster (known as Northern Ireland at the time) was in the midst of a conflict between Irish Republican paramilitaries and British Loyalist/Unionist paramilitaries. Both sides engaged in bombing campaigns, shootings, and other acts of violence against each other, the British military, and even themselves as a result of infighting and rivalry between the various number of Republican and Loyalist groups.
