Kamala Khan's Friends and Allies

    Nakia Bahadir
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cc10a2a6c2aaa6768d48b7b936d51ec4.jpg

Kamala's Turkish-American friend.

  • Cultural Rebel: Inverted. Nakia's family want to her "American-ize" herself more, but she proudly embraces her heritage and wears her hijab against her father's wishes.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When Hope Yards uses Ms. Marvel's image in their gentrification campaign, she quite bluntly complains to Kamala about Ms. Marvel being a sell-out, even after Kamala exposes Hope Yards as a HYDRA plot.
  • Meaningful Rename: Inverted. She apparently went by "Kiki" in the past but recently started going by her real name again. This is likely another part of the "phase" her father thinks she is going through.
  • Oblivious to Love: She had no idea that Zoe is in love with her until the latter confessed it to her.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the studious blue oni to Kamala's upbeat red oni.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: She reveals in #31 that she's know that Kamala was Ms. Marvel for some time.
  • Soapbox Sadie: Nakia is a budding activist and is very passionate about what she believes in.

    Bruno Carrelli
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/116998df88de03df48365127b012654c.jpg

A convenience store clerk and one of Kamala's school friends, Bruno has very complicated feelings regarding Kamala.

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Kamala says that if he were Pakistani, her parents would be trying to get them together due to his good grades and work ethic. Bruno looks unhappy about that. Reinforced in #12, where Bruno's quite happy that he didn't drink the punch spiked with Asgardian truth serum before speaking to Kamala-as-Ms. Marvel at the Valentine's Day dance.
  • Brainwashed: By Hope Yards Development and Relocation Association in the first arc of the 2015 relaunch.
  • Cain and Abel: In Issue #3, Bruno's little brother Vick appears and tries to get Bruno to steal him some money from the Circle Q (and later holds up the store during Bruno's shift to get the cash himself). He is apparently also jealous of Bruno being "the brains of the family".
  • Identical Ancestor: In the flashback sequence in #36, his thirteenth-century counterpart is an Italian knight named Sir Brunello, who looks identical to Bruno and is implied to have a matching crush on Kamala's ancestor Kamilah.
  • Raised by Grandparents: The Carrelli boys are raised by their Nonna (granny) and Pop Pop (grandpa) as a result of being removed by social services from their birth mother's care due to her drug addiction.
  • Secret-Keeper: Bruno knows of Kamala's powers and superheroics, having found out in Issue #4, and he helps cover for her when trouble comes up.
  • Teen Genius: He's noted by Dr. Faustus to have an IQ of 170, and he's extremely skilled in mechanical science.
  • We Used to Be Friends: By the end of the Civil War II arc, he's lost the use of his dominant hand and is planning to move to Wakanda just to get back some control of his life. He doesn't plan on saying goodbye to Kamala or, in fact, ever seeing her again. He cannot help but miss Kamala, though, and ultimately chooses to return to her side once more.

    Vittorio "Vick" Carrelli
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6e8570afcc862171c7a042fe310e8c82.jpg

Bruno's little brother, who gets involved with the Inventor early on but otherwise tries to be supportive.

  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: Accidentally shoots Kamala with a gun he thinks is unloaded.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Apparently the Carrelli boys are raised by their Nonna (granny) and Pop Pop (grandpa) as a result of being removed by social services from their birth mother's care due to her drug addiction.
  • Trapped in Villainy: Asks his brother to help him stage a robbery for the Inventor.
  • You Have Failed Me: The Inventor's reaction when he botches the robbery at his brother's store.

    Gabriel "Gabe" Hillman
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5617436_gabe_hillman.jpg

Tyesha's younger brother. He begins attending Kamala's school and quickly becomes part of her group of friends.

  • Hollywood Atheist: In his introductory appearances he's very belligerently atheist, views religion as inherently backwards and oppressive, and will proselytize on this point with very little prompting. This causes some significant strife with his Christian parents and Muslim sister.
Gabe: Aw c'mon, Pop! I was just having a conversation!
Mr. Hillman: Telling your great-aunt Phyllis that playing the organ on Sundays "glorifies the oppression of free thought and self-imposed economic servitude" is not just having a conversation, Gabriel.
  • Insistent Terminology: He and Kamala are very clear on the point that they are not siblings-in-law, because they feel weird using such terminology at their age.
  • Only Sane Man: During the time where Ms. Marvel's gone M.I.A, Kamala's friends decide to pick up the slack by uniting with Red Dagger, dressing up in Ms. Marvel inspired costumes and fighting crime. Gabe is the one amongst the group who recognizes how very much they're in over their heads, but decides to stick with his friends anyway.

    Michaela "Mike" Miller
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mike_1.jpg

Bruno's girlfriend.

  • Alliterative Name: Michaela Miller. Nicknamed "Mike."
  • Big Beautiful Woman: She's chubby and cute.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: Well, Is Friends With My Alter Ego. She ends up being friendly with Kamala and Ms Marvel, seemingly oblivious to the fact that they are the same person ( although she actually finds out at some point). It's a bit awkward but gives Kamala a chance to explain her actions to her in a roundabout fashion.
  • Second Love: For Bruno, who enters a relationship with her after he and Kamala grow distant.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: She reveals in #31 that she knew Kamala was Ms. Marvel for some time.
  • Your Size May Vary: She is increasingly less chubby in some later issues. Trying to keep up with the zaniness of Ms. Marvel's world might do that.

    Zoe Zimmer
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zoe_zimmer_earth_616_from_ms_marvel_vol_4_09.jpg

One of Kamala's classmates, Zoe first appears as a shallow, conceited schoolmate who talks down to and belittles Kamala and her friends, but does some drastic rethinking of her life after nearly dying.

  • All Love Is Unrequited: It turns out that she's gay and secretly in love with Nakia. Nakia doesn't feel the same way regarding Zoe. However, Nakia appreciates her feeling and assures her that they're still friends.
  • Alliterative Name: Both her names start with Z.
  • Alpha Bitch: Mocks Kamala and Nakia's cultures by asking them ignorant questions about it. She is also concerned about Bruno's financial status (so not only racist, but classist too).
  • The Apocalypse Brings Out the Best in People: The Incursion event that nearly led to the death of her and everyone she knows caused Zoe to seriously reevaluate her life. She seriously became friends with Kamala and Nakia, then stopped acting dumber then she really was, and finally, she decided to stop lying about her sexuality.
  • Badass Driver: As befits her parents' wealth, she's the only one of Kamala's group with reliable access to a car and she takes the wheel whenever the group ventures outside of Jersey City. Magnificent Ms. Marvel demonstrates that Zoe has a growing talent for speed; she regularly delivers Kamala to her destination far faster than is legally possible.
  • Character Development: Probably undergoes the most out of all of Kamala's supporting cast during the second volume, after recognises the way she's treated people and makes efforts to change. By the "Teenage Wasteland" arc, she's became so different that the original Zoe would be unrecognisable, where she's gone from a racist bully into a quirky lesbian and arguably Kamala's closest friend.
  • Closet Gay: Her constant Alpha Bitch behavior towards Kamala and Nakia turns out to be a mask for the fact that she is gay and has a crush on Nakia.
  • Expy: She's more or less a female Flash Thompson to Kamala's female Peter Parker. She even follows Flash's character arc, starting off as a complete asshole before gradually becoming kinder and friendlier towards the protagonist.
  • Forced to Come Out: She has a particularly cruel one when an AI spills her love letters all over the internet. This is somewhat mitigated when she ends up at the heart of a multi-person hug involving half the school.
  • Genki Girl: Initially a dark version, as her upbeat persona was used to cover how much of an immature selfish Jerkass she was. After growing up, she's now a Nice Girl who happens to also be rather upbeat and quirky.
  • Identical Ancestor: In the flashback sequence in #36, her thirteenth-century counterpart is the most extreme case of this — while the others at least have different names, her is just named Lady Zoë.
  • The Illegal: Strictly speaking, Zoe is not a US national. She was born in France while her family was living there for her father's work, and the Zimmers have just never gotten around for filling out the paperwork to make Zoe a citizen.
  • Innocent Bigot: Kamala's interpretation of all the ignorant things Zoe says. She seems to realize quickly though this isn't the case.
  • Incompatible Orientation: With Nakia. They end up close friends instead.
  • Love Confession: Finally confessed her love to Nakia in Issue #16.
  • Loving Bully: Her earlier treatment of Nakia is put in this light when it's revealed that Zoe is in love with her.
  • Rich Bitch: Zoe is upper middle class, feeding into her unearned sense of superiority towards Kamala, Nakia, and Bruno (all first-generation immigrant kids). After her character development, Zoe's more cognizant of her privileged status, and leverages that social advantage to support her friends or stand up for what she believes in.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Reveals in #31 that she knew Kamala was Ms. Marvel for some time.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Zoe's father is on the City Council and her mother is a lawyer, a fact she leverages to talk to Josh after Becky and company have locked him up for a crime he has not yet committed.
  • Straw Feminist: She parodies the kind of "feminist" who is convinced that all Muslim women are abused by their husbands/fathers/brothers and need to totally repudiate their faith and culture to be empowered. After her character development this has subsided into a more well-rounded and fairer representation...though she does express the belief that men aren't really needed, given that she's into women.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: It took the Incursions to do it, but the impending threat of The End of the World as We Know It caused her to dramatically re-evaluate her priorities, and she is now friends with Kamala and Nakia and hangs out with them.
  • Troll: A "concern troll", in Bruno's words.
  • Wants a Prize for Basic Decency: She was so concerned about Bruno that she is even willing to shop at the grocery store he works at. So why wouldn't he make coffee for her? How ungrateful!

    Lockjaw
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cd78fafcecf713326b374c46fd31838e.jpg

Canine friend of Kamala, sent to her by Queen Medusa of the Inhumans.

  • Attack Animal: He is generally very friendly, but he is also an asset in fights.
  • Big Friendly Dog: Big? Very. Friendly? That too.
  • Canine Companion: Queen Medusa's gift to look after Kamala. She has no objections.
  • Nearly Normal Animal: It's not clear exactly how intelligent he is, but he usually has a good enough grip on the situation while acting very doglike.
  • Out of Focus: After the arc that introduced him, Lockjaw has had a pretty minor role in the comic. His presence in the Khan household (or at least the Khan back yard) hasn't really been brought up, though he still makes the occasional minor appearance. If Kamala's reaction to him in Vol. 2 Issue #31 is anything to go buy, he does his own thing most of the time but checks in every so often to help her out, or just to play a game of fetch or chase with her.
  • Teleportation: The cute giant doggy can teleport. Makes sneaking out to superhero that much easier for Kamala. This also bails her out in #9: having recently expended so much energy healing that she can't morph into her costume and is barely able to fight with her expanding limbs and fists, she has Lockjaw create a distraction by teleporting himself into view of her classmates, allowing Kamala's shapeshifting to go unnoticed.

    Kareem / Red Dagger
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5508430_ms_marvel_2015_012_019.jpg

A young boy from Badin whom Kamala meets during an overseas trip to meet her grandmother in Karachi, as he lives with her while studying to get into college. He's secretly Laal Kanjeer (the Red Dagger), a masked vigilante.

  • Best Friends-in-Law: Kareem calls himself this as his and Kamala's mothers were close friends in secondary school.
  • Culture Clash: He's very disapproving of the concept of retirement homes, as in Pakistani culture it's expected that elderly people deserve to spend their last years in their own homes.
  • Foreign Exchange Student: After Secret Empire, he temporarily transfers into Kamala's school — his mother only allowed this trip on the condition that he stay somewhere close to the Khans.
  • Non-Powered Costumed Hero: He has no superpowers — his vigilantism is fueled solely by physical training and good aim.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The Red Dagger's mask only covers the lower part of his face. It gives Kamala a full view of his long black hair and eyes, which just happen to resemble Kareem's.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Kareem and Kamala never outright say they know each other's secret identities but he alludes that he is sure they both have some pretty good guesses due to the Contrived Coincidence of their frequent meetups.

    Fadi Fadlallah / Amulet
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amulet.jpg

A new Arab American superhero from Dearborn, Michigan, who gain superpowers from a family heirloom that has magical properties.

  • Alternate Company Equivalent: He is an Lebanese American Male Muslim superhero from Dearborn Michigan who has a cold coloured note  accessory that grants him the power to congure hard light force fields. Fadi seems to be Marvel's equivalent to DC's Simon Baz.
  • Amulet of Concentrated Awesome: Source of his powers.
  • Barrier Warrior: it seems his main powers are barriers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Stormranger comes back to get revenge on Kamala during the 75th issue celebration, she initially gains the upper hand against Kamala and is about to finish her off, but then Fadi swoops in and saves Kamala with his powers.
  • The Big Guy: To the point cover of his debut appearance has him give Kamala a piggyback ride while they stand in front of dozens of beaten up people.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: A guy who gets powers from a magical amulet and calls himself Amulet, duh.
  • Flaming Hair: When he activates his powers his hair turns into blue flame.
  • Gentle Giant: Outright called so in the solicits.
  • Instant Armor: His powers let him summon one.
  • Shoulders of Doom: His armor consists of two humongous shoulder pads that are noted to be layered from 3 pieces each, so he can actually move his arms.

Khan Family

    Yusuf Khan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9b03402fd1c2efda1990345c599255c1.png

Kamala's father, who works at a bank.

  • Education Mama: A gender-flipped version to Kamala. He often compares her against her friend Bruno, who has both a job and good grades.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: In the second and fifth issues, he shows a better deal of kindness and understanding to Kamala when confronting her about her sneaking out. Double Subversion when he finds out Kamala is Ms. Marvel. Although initially disapproving of it he does ultimately come to respect his daughter's decisions and bravery during their adventure on Saffa. It becomes all for naught when his memory is erased.
  • Soap Opera Disease: Magnificent Ms. Marvel ends its first arc with the reveal that Yusuf is dying of an unknown disease. It turns out Yusuf was exposed to the Terrigen mists and had his latent Inhuman genes activated in a wholly-destructive way. Surgery by Dr. Strange and a blood transfusion from Kamala save his life.

    Muneeba Khan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b1122277df3970c7c41a3a70ad319b36.jpg

Kamala's traditional but loving mother.

  • Education Mama: To Kamala. She's more lenient towards Aamir, who remains unemployed due to his religious lifestyle... but even she gets fed up with him in #2 when she calls his look that of "a penniless mullah".
  • Mind Wipe: She loses her memory of Kamala's secret identity in Magnificent Ms. Marvel #5.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Kamala comes clean about her superheroics; not only does Muneeba already know, she's downright proud of her daughter for saving people, even if she's finding it scary.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: She no idea what "fan feek" is.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: At the end of #18, she tells Kamala that she knows she's Ms. Marvel.
  • So Proud of You: The final issue before the reboot has her admit she came to realize certain things about Kamala didn't add up until she realized her daughter was Ms. Marvel, and that, if sneaking out to help people was the worst thing she did, then she was happy that she had a daughter like her.

    Aamir Khan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ed95f82b80577931bb00836a8ac8c77c.jpg

Kamala's very pious older brother.

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: He and Kamala are constantly butting heads, but he was ready to fight Kamran for being a threat to her. When a stunned Kamala mumbles she thought he hated her, Carol gently reminds her Aamir is her brother — no matter how much they bicker, he will have her back.
  • Basement-Dweller: He lives with his parents despite being an adult, partly due to his unemployment and partly because in non-Western cultures it's not rare for adult children to live with their parents until in marriage.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He makes it clear that if someone hurt Kamala, he wouldn't think twice about making a lynch mob with his friends to get payback. He also tries getting between Kamran and Kamala when they're obviously crushing on each other... emphasis on tries.
  • Characterization Marches On: In later storylines, Amir's chronic unemployment fades away. He begins working under Sheikh Abdullah at the family's masjid, implying he may become an imam in the future.
  • The Fundamentalist: He's the most outwardly pious Muslim in the family, and disapproves of his father working at a bank as usury is against Islamic tenets... but his father thinks his extreme piety is just his way to avoid getting a job, and even his mother thinks he "dresses like a penniless mullah". In later issues, he begins working at Sheikh Abdullah's masjid with the intention of eventually becoming a religious scholar himself.
  • House Husband: Following his marriage to Tyesha, because he's unemployed so it's the more practical option for everyone.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: After exposing Aamir to "Terrigen Mist" and forcing him to develop powers, Kamran starts to rant about his superior destiny... only for Aamir to shot him down, because he's perfectly happy without powers and doesn't feel he would like superpowers. But he's still ready to use them to kick the ass of the creep preying on his sister.
  • Instant Armor: Aamir's Inhuman power allows him to psychically surround himself with energy armor. This is activated when Kamran exposes him to an unknown mist... and then Kamran regrets it when Aamir shows him not to mess with him or his sister.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: A non-malicious example, he tries to deter Bruno from acting on his feelings for Kamala to avoid the inevitable culture clash it would cause with her parents.

    Tyesha Hillman-Khan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/msmarveltyesha.jpg

An African-American Muslim woman that eventually marries Aamir.

  • Black and Nerdy: She's a black woman and makes a Dune reference, which endears her to Kamala.
  • Maligned Mixed Marriage: Aamir's parents initially disapprove of their relationship. However, they quickly change their minds once Tyesha shows proper respect for Pakistani customs, particularly living with her husband's parents until they get enough resources to move out on their own. Her anarcho-atheist brother also seems to disapprove of the relationship, believing that religion is inherently misogynistic and oppressive.
  • Mistaken for Terrorist: She's first seen when she's being accosted by three men. Her offense was walking on the sidewalk.
  • Pregnant Badass: She leads a group of protestors against the K.I.N.D. enforcers detaining her husband and other people, while heavily pregnant.

    Malik Theodore Khan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6925733_malik.jpg

Aamir and Tyesha's young son, who is simultaneously the most wonderful and most terrifying thing Ms. Marvel has ever faced.

  • Ambiguously Human: Through his father, Malik has latent Inhuman DNA. At the end of issue #37, his eyes are seen glowing purple.
  • Brainy Baby: Downplayed, but Malik is incredibly precocious. Due to Comic-Book Time, it's hard to gauge how much time it's been since his birth, but he's already able to stand on his own and walk a few steps at a time, something that usually takes babies nine to sixteen months to learn.
  • Fearless Infant: In one story, the neighborhood is flooded and Ms. Marvel finds herself in a mad dash to keep innocent little Malik from getting hurt.

Other Characters

    Sheikh Abdullah
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1c21ed604cf94f43d22c73585942ad5e.png

A teacher at the Khan family's mosque.

  • Cool Old Guy: He actually encourages Kamala to keep "helping" people, though it's unclear how much he actually knows about what Kamala does. Also gives shelter to Mutants and Inhumans against Discord and Lockdown's forces.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's got a surprisingly prominent snarky streak, although it's all good-natured.
  • Expy: Kamala's conversations with Sheikh Abdullah about morality with veiled references to superheroics are similar to the confessions her fellow openly-religious superhero Matt Murdock occasionally makes.
  • Good Shepherd: In #6, when Kamala indirectly explains to him that the reason she breaks curfew is to help people, the Sheikh does not tell her to stop (knowing it won't work) and instead encourages her to find a teacher so that she can get better at whatever she is doing. Luckily for her, the potential teacher she soon finds is the best there is at what he does.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite Kamala building him up in the reader's mind as a Stern Teacher and a Grumpy Old Man who would never listen or understand, he turns out to actually be quite patient and understanding — if somewhat snarky.
  • Stern Teacher: Kamala describes him as stern and authoritative, although this is mostly an Informed Flaw.
  • Ye Goode Olde Days: He believes in partitioning men and women in the mosque. When Kamala points out that the Prophet Mohammed's mosque didn't do this, he says that those were the "blessed times" with less scandal and temptation.

     Prince Cheb Hura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6989187_cheb_hura.jpg

The Prince of the Saffa people, who led their uprising against his father.

  • Badass in Distress: He can take care of himself but Kamala still had to rescue him.
  • Distressed Dude: Kamala meets him when he is being captured and tortured.
  • Expy: He's the spitting image of Prince Lotor in appearance, and also has a corrupt king he wants to overthrow for a father.
  • Healing Hands: He has the power to heal or at least restore a person's stamina.
  • Icon of Rebellion: Called Hope of the People by his followers.
  • Rescue Romance: After Kamala saves him he clearly becomes smitten with her.
  • Second Love: He offers to be this to Kamala when she admits she already loves someone. It unclear what he meant, but it seems to imply his culture is okay with polyamorous relationships.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: To stern disapproval of Kamala's parents.

     "The Destined One" / Stormranger 20- 14
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eovsqvgwaaeuekf.jpg

A Kree soldier who bears an uncanny resemblance to Kamala, she rescued the planet Saffa during a routine patrol and became immortalized in their legends.

  • Flying Brick: Judging from Saffa's records on her, she appears to have the same flight and energy powers as Carol Danvers.
  • Nanomachines: She wears a Kree nanosuit that allows her to hack into the computer controlling the Beast Legions and shut them down. The suit is left behind until Kamala arrives and it makes her its new wearer.
  • No Name Given: Her actual name is never spoken. At most, she identifies by her rank as "Stormranger 20-14". The suit takes her rank for its new name when it gains sentience and leaves Kamala.
