United Emirates of Orb (Orb Union)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orb_union.png

An island nation in the Pacific, Orb has a high-tech industrial base but little in the way of resources; they built Heliopolis primarily as a way to mitigate this strategic weakness. A very idealistic nation, their stance in international politics is one of aggressive neutrality; though they will not attack others, they will vigorously defend themselves against any attacks. The war between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT has strained this position to its breaking point, especially after the destruction of Heliopolis.

Five Great Clans of Orb

Athha Family

    Cagalli Yula Athha

    Uzumi Nara Athha

Voiced by: Tōru Ōkawa (Japanese); John Novak [Ocean dub], J. David Brimmer [NYAV Post dub] (English)

"We can't leave Orb, or this world, in the hands of those bastards."
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uzumi_seed.png

The former leader of Orb in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Cagalli's father, Lord Uzumi is completely dedicated to maintaining Orb's neutral stance. This becomes ever more difficult as the war spirals out of control. Faced with increasing pressure to choose a side in the ZAFT-Earth Alliance conflict, he refuses to compromise his nation's ideals.

  • Ambiguous Situation: What did he know about the G-Weapon Project? While Rondo Mina Sahaku initiated Morgenroete's involvement with the G-Weapon Project as established in Astray, how much he knew about it remains in question. Kisaka certainly claimed that Lord Uzumi was uninvolved but notably Uzumi himself never makes a definitive statement in private. He publicly claimed responsibility and stepped down as Orb's Chief Representative in any case. So whether he viewed the project as a Necessarily Evil to maintain Orb's neutrality in the face of ZAFT and the EA's technological advancement is left to the viewer.
  • Big Good: Of SEED. Unlike Azrael and Patrick, he is firmly a good man who loves his people and daughter, wanting all to live equally.
  • Cycle of Revenge: Expounds about this to Cagalli about how her belief in fighting enemies will bring unending hatred by others. Also a Foreshadowing to the eventual deaths of Nicol and Tolle that further fueled hatred between Athrun and Kira, and the escalation of the war in the show's last act.
  • Defiant to the End: When it became clear that Orb was going to lose its fight against the Earth Alliance in SEED, he chose to blow up the very resources OMNI had come to the country to seize, rendering their invasion a waste.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Igniting a self-destruct that blows up Orb's mass driver and himself in the process, effectively trapping the Earth Forces on earth in SEED. This only delays them a bit, and ultimately causes more problems for his daughter and ORB in general down the line.
  • Face Death with Dignity: He shows no signs of panic or distress as he dies.
  • The Good King: Or SEED equivalent; he kept the neutrality of his country even with the threat of invasion from the Earth Alliance and actually treats his citizens—both Naturals and Coordinators—fairly.
  • Good Parents: He is a loving and understanding father to Cagalli, but all the same knows when to be stern and upfront, especially when she gets particularly imprudent.
  • Messianic Archetype: At times he's more this than Kira and Lacus put together because of his insistence on neutrality, avoiding the Cycle of Revenge, and preaching tolerance and understanding. He even looks the part. He also makes a heroic sacrifice.
  • More Hero than Thou: At the end of the last Battle of Orb in SEED, Cagalli argues vociferously that they should all escape, but Uzumi is in charge, so he orders Kisaka to take her on the Kusanagi and flee into space. After which he blows up the Kaguya mass driver and Morgenroete to prevent them from falling into anyone else's hands.
  • Mythology Gag: Given his terse-and-conflicted, yet loving relationship with his runaway heir Cagalli (who is unaware of the truth about her birth), strong stance against outside conflict, and the fiery lengths he's willing to go to protect it, he borrowed quite a lot from Mr. Winner of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Cagalli screams his name in the Kusanagi escape scene almost identically to her Gender Flip Quatre in the earlier show.
  • Non-Action Guy: Politician, not a soldier.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: His grand exit blowing himself and his loyal council up to keep the Mass Driver away from the Alliance and take responsibility for failing to protect Orb would inadvertently leave Cagalli with no political allies in SEED Destiny leaving Orb at the mercy of the Seiran's for much of it and causing problems for everyone. While his sacrifice was brave, things might have been better off if he'd saved himself and detonated the place remotely.
  • Papa Wolf: Shit’s getting dire? He sacrifices himself to let his adoptive daughter and allies escape.
  • Parents as People: He slaps Cagalli, calls her a fool, and implies he would not save a ship just because she was on it, but he loves her very much, even if he can't always be kind and gentle about it.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Considering the amounts of General Ripper and A Nazi by Any Other Name in this show, his benign nature stands out.
  • So Proud of You: To Cagalli.
"Being your father was my greatest blessing."

Seiran Family

    Yuna Roma Seiran

Voiced by: Kenji Nojima (Japanese); Brian Drummond [Ocean dub], Bryce Papenbrook [NYAV Post dub] (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuuna_roma_seiran_0.png

"This country isn't your plaything! Will you stop making decisions based on how you feel?"

A high-ranking Orb politician seen in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, he is Cagalli's official fiancé and a total jerk to boot. In her absence he leads Orb from one disaster to another, most notably the alliance with Neo and Djibril, both of whom he is terrified.

  • 0% Approval Rating: By the end of SEED Destiny, Yuna has gained this status from the Orb military and its citizens. With the many examples given below, it is not hard to see why.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: A smug, upper-class dumbass.
  • Armchair Military: Yuna thinks he's a great commander because of his talent for strategy games, and as such, takes command of Orb's forces, believing that he will lead them to victory. About that...
  • Arranged Marriage: His father and Cagalli's had set one up. Yuna's willing to go through with it because he wants the political prestige.
  • Asshole Victim: By the time of his death, Yuna was despised by the Orb military (and the audience) for being a irresponsible leader, always blaming them for his failures on them, for what he has done to Cagalli and mostly, to have plunged Orb into war for personal gain. No one shed a single tear he gets crushed to death by a GOUF.
  • Bad Boss: In SEED Destiny, Yuna commands the Orb troops to attack their leader Cagalli rather than admit his failure and constantly makes orders that would relieve him of accountability rather than the best interests of Orb and its soldiers. The Orb commanders are never happy with his choices which only cause further problems for everyone. The biggest sign of how poorly he is received is when Cagalli orders her troops to arrest him in the battle of Orb, the first thing Colonel Soga (the officier in charge in the command post he was in) does is to punch him in the face while the rest make no effort to treat him humanely. They even let Cagalli go about punching him again when she confronts him at the end.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Yuna actually thinks he's a player in this game, but he's way out of his league with Durandal, Djibril, and even Neo (who scares him to death).
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He's smug and irritating initially but also soft-spoken and apologetic to Cagalli when he initially uses her to make a political point, seemingly concerned for her welfare. The shred of a nice-guy facade he has rapidly gets dropped as it's apparent that all Yuna cares about is the power and prestige of marrying her, though.
  • Bling of War: His very fancy uniform. Standard for his Orb military rank, though.
  • Broken Pedestal: At the start of SEED Destiny, Cagalli naively believed that Yuna was acting in the best interests of Orb and thus listened to him. Over the course of the show, what little respect Cagalli had for him quickly dissapeared when she learns that Yuna tried to have her killed, how he neglected his responsibilites for their country, how he betrayed Orb's values and what he has done to their nation. Cagalli was rightfully angry at Yuna for that and her punch in his face when he vainly tried to explain himself is what seals that trope for good.
  • Dirty Coward: Even more so than Djibril, panicking at the slightest hint of difficulty. Highlighted when Kira came to "kidnap" Cagalli with his Freedom, Yuna was hiding behind her, and also when Cagalli cames back with her Akatsuki, Yuna was quick to give back power to Cagalli so he would shift the blame.
  • Disposable Fiancé: Not only did he not exist until SEED Destiny, he only shows up in-story after several episodes of Athrun and Cagalli together, let alone the heavy implication they've been together for two years. He then proceeds to be a Hate Sink. Cagalli may have come within a hairsbreadth of actually marrying him, but he's ultimately disposed of with a punch by Cagalli herself and fatally with a GOUF crashing on him.
  • Domestic Abuse: During the wedding in the limo, Yuna begins showing colder and harsher traits akin to an abusive partner to Cagalli.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Dropped a crashing GOUF on him in the battle of Orb in SEED Destiny.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: He is no strategic genius - but even he knows that rushing forward in a kamikaze attack is going to ruin the Orb Fleet's advantage over the badly-damaged Minerva when shelling them at a distance will do.
  • Fantastic Racism: Subverted. Yuna's not particularly anti-Coordinator himself, but he's willing to promote this sort of attitude in Orb if it racks up more political points with the Atlantic Federation in SEED Destiny.
  • Foil: To both Athrun and Cagalli. All three of them are children of politicians but with different mindsets.
    • To Cagalli. Yuna is an irresponsible Manchild only caring about prestige of ruling Orb and not its ideals as shown when he allied himself with the Earth Alliance and LOGOS, he is a more experienced politician than her but a General Failure and a Non-Action Guy. While Cagalli loves and cares deeply for Orb and its ideals but lacks experience in ruling due to her actions in SEED, she is a competent tactician and an Action Girl. By the end of SEED Destiny, she is Orb's Universally Beloved Leader and The High Queen, she has accepted she made mistakes in the Second War too and has learned from them and grows stronger from them too. While Yuna is ultimately getting a 0% Approval Rating from his country and never learns from his mistakes or take responsibility for his actions. In SEED Freedom, when Orb was in crisis because of the Foundation, Cagalli has quickly devised an evacuation plan for her people, ensuring their safety and goes in a Mobile Suit to participate in the battle against the Foundation (albeit indirectly via Athrun). In comparaison, Yuna and his father have done nothing to protect Orb's population during the battle of Orb in SEED Destiny, causing many deaths (including theirs) and in that same battle when back in charge, Cagalli has also quickly issued orders to protect her people too.
    • To Athrun. Yuna is a Non-Action Guy politician and a pale tactician, fancying himself to quickly marry Cagalli for the prestige of being her husband while not caring for her feelings or wishes and pushing her to make decisions she didn't want to make under the pretext it is for Orb, he even tries to make her change her tomboyish personality for him. Athrun is a soldier without any political knowledge who has fought many battles and he is a capable commander, the Coordinator loves Cagalli deeply for who she is, it is best displayed at the end of SEED Destiny and after, Athrun is respecting her decisions (Cagalli removing his ring is one of them but by the time of SEED Freedom, she wears it again as a necklace) and her responsibilities over Orb, even directly helping her by joining and staying in the Orb military, patiently waiting for her and when their moment comes, Athrun and Cagalli's wedding will be for their mutual love. Also, Athrun and Yuna are both traitors for their (initial for Athrun) nations but for different reasons: Yuna has betrayed Orb and its ideals for personal gain while Athrun has betrayed ZAFT twice for doing what is right, finding solace at Orb after the second time and Athrun has never betrayed his newfound home since then. In short, Yuna was Cagalli's Evil Chancellor and usurper, while Athrun is now her devoted loyal knight.
  • General Failure: This lame-o fancies himself a great military leader because of his skills in strategy games and when things go south for his forces he will panic and try to shift blame. He manages to make Djibril (who has his ruthlessness going for him, if nothing else) look like a great commander in comparison.
  • Hate Sink: Yuna's an incompetent moron who fancies himself a major player. Used by Djibril and crushed by Durandal, he's there to make the both of them look more capable by comparison, while having the audience despise him for what he does to Cagalli and Orb. No one is gonna to miss him when he gets crushed to death.
  • Humiliation Conga: Getting punched in the face by Colonel Soga, restrained by more Orb soldiers and receiving another punch in the face by an angry Cagalli. His torment ends with him being crushed to death under the backside of falling mobile suit while trying to flee and that GOUF even gets a Eye Lights Out moment after for further humiliation.
  • Hypocrite: The page quote? Directed at Cagalli but actually is more in line with how he runs the country than she does. For context, this is when Cagalli brings up the very reasonable arguments against the Orb-Earth Alliance treaty, which include how they're basically threatening Orb with another invasion if they don't join them. However, Yuna, his father and their allies have much more to gain from accepting this treaty and thus are not acting in the best interest of the country but their own self-serving needs.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: The original romanization was "Jona".
  • Irony: Yuna tried to evince Cagalli, the last of the Athhas from power, weakening her. The invasion of Orb, caused by his own actions, resulted in the death of his entire family, making him the last of the Seirans ... for short moment anyway since he died just after. The Seirans tried to elevate their status by throwing Orb's ideals, this caused their doom. And for double irony, Cagalli is back as the rightful ruler of Orb, having emerged stronger from this experience and no longer being pushed around by anyone anymore as SEED Freedom will demonstrate.
  • Jerkass: Kind of goes without saying once you look at the rest of the tropes associated with him.
  • Karmic Butt-Monkey: He faces one unfortunate event after another once Cagalli escapes his grasp, having her snatched away by Kira piloting the Freedom, and panicking whenever anything, especially battles, goes south. Then he is disliked by Orb's officers and citizens alike for being incompetent and getting their country attacked. When Cagalli returns and he gladly hands authority back, he is on the receiving end of a fist to the face by Colonel Soga, followed by a dog-pile from more officers; even Cagalli punches his face as well! And finally, a GOUF crashes on top of him.
  • Kick the Dog: Laughs at Cagalli when she tries and fails to do a curtsy when receiving etiquette lessons from his mother in preparation for the wedding.
  • Last of His Kind: When Orb was attacked by ZAFT in SEED Destiny, the entire Seiran Family was killed at the start of the invasion, making Yuna the last member of the Seiran Family. Not for long however since he is killed shortly after. This ends the Seiran Family influence on Orb.
  • Laughably Evil: Particularly in the English dub, where his status as a Smug Snake, Dirty Coward, and General Failure is played for all the comedy it can provide, in contrast to the much more serious (if not much more effectual) Lord Djibril.
  • Manchild: When he finally gets to be Orb's Chief Representative in SEED Destiny, Yuna handles the position with as much maturity and vigilance as an eight year old kid taking his dad's very fast and very expensive car out for a joyride. The manga adaptation even has him screaming for his father when he sees their family shuttle (unaware that only Djibril was onboard) taking off without him.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He thinks he's one, but he's way out of his league compared to the likes of Neo (who terrifies him) or even Djibril, let alone Durandal. His most notable onscreen accomplishment was using Cagalli's insecurities and father complex against her to effectively steer her to govern the country as he saw fit. Given that Cagalli is only a teenage head-of-state who would much rather be on the frontlines with her forces, this is hardly anything to boast about.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: With Cagalli in SEED Destiny. He lampshades this on the way to their wedding, correcting Cagalli's tomboyish manner of speech into something more exaggeratedly "proper" and feminine.
  • The Neidermeyer: He is seen this way by Captain Todaka and the rest of the Orb troops who have to serve under him.
  • Never My Fault: Yuna never take responsibility for every military failures he caused, shifting blame to the Orb soldiers and officers.
  • Non-Action Guy: No experience in combat, no desire to see it.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Yuna gets this expression when Cagalli, upon regaining control of Orb, orders the Orb military to arrest him for treason, and gets punched in the face by Colonel Soga.
    • He gets a second moment just before being sat on by a GOUF and turned into a pancake.
  • Overlord Jr.: Shades of this, even though he and his father essentially share chief executive power during their reign. Unato seems to handle more of the bureaucracy while Yuna is makes public addresses and speeches.
  • Powerful, but Incompetent: Yuna hails from one of the five noble families in Orb and is much more self-assured in his political rulings then Cagalli, but completely does himself in due to his inability to comprehend that people and soldiers may actually value principle and integrity over wealth and status.
  • The Quisling: He's effectively the head of Orb for most of the series and openly collaborates with the authoritarian regime of the Earth Alliance.
  • Romantic False Lead: A pretty obvious one for Cagalli.
  • Sissy Villain: Effeminate voice and mannerisms? Check. Screams like a girl? Check. Sleeps in elf pajamas? Check.
  • Sleazy Politician: Yuna's a total Slimeball who's only out to make himself more politically influential. He and his father devolve into full-on Corrupt Politician for granting asylum to Djibril, who by that point was Global Enemy No. 1.
  • Smug Snake: Incredibly stuck-up, incredibly incompetent.
  • Squashed Flat: Has the ignonimy meeting his well-deserved end of being sat on like a whoopee-cushion by a falling Gouf.
  • Sucksessor: While he’s certainly a more experienced and proactive politician than Cagalli, Yuna isn't well-liked by Orb officers for his incompetence and reliance on his blood ties with a powerful family vying for Orb leadership now that Cagalli is the only surviving member of the Athha family. And they're more than happy to pound his face in once Cagalli reappears after being "kidnapped" by Kira and orders his arrest.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He and his father provide sanctuary to the most hated man on the planet, and when the rest of Earth demands that he hand him over or face war, thinks that holding a press conference denying what everyone knows is established fact is enough to avert the crisis he created. They end up dying from this mistake.
  • Undignified Death: Being sat on by a falling Gouf and squashed like a pancake while trying to flee is quite the humiliating way to go.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Of Djibril, who while no genius, knows a sucker when he sees one, using Yuna to do his fighting, and then leaving him out to dry when things go badly.
  • The Usurper: He tries to run Orb as Cagalli's supposed "husband", while calling her an impostor when she initially attempts to return or command the forces. This will eventually bites him back in the ass when Cagalli reassumes control of Orb and orders his arrest, which Orb soldiers happily comply with.
  • War for Fun and Profit: Got Orb involved in the war to win political points with Djibril and maintain his position at home. It backfires pretty badly.

Mashima Family

    Toyah Mashima

Voiced by: Ayane Sakura (Japanese)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gundam_seed_freedom_toyah.png

A young boy from one of the Great Families of Orb serving as Cagalli's secretary in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.

  • Child Prodigy: Toyah is mentioned to be smart according to the Japanese website of the movie.
  • Kid Sidekick: Cagalli's young aide. Looks up to Cagalli to the point of actually calling her "Cagalli Onee-sama" ("Big sister Cagalli") in the Japanese version.
  • Redeeming Replacement: In SEED Destiny, the head of the Mashima family, Tatsuki Mashima, was supporting the Seirans in their decisions to ally with the Atlantic Federation, opposing Cagalli. Tatsuki died when ZAFT attacked Orb. In SEED Freedom, Toyah is from that same family but he greatly admires Cagalli instead and she is actually mentoring him to succeed her one day. Toyah can also be seen as this to Yuna and, by extension, the Seirans, a member of the Five Families of Orb following and supporting Cagalli in her goals.

Sahaku family

    Sahaku twins
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray largely focuses on the Sahaku family, one of the Orb Union's five ruling clans. Though currently the Athhas hold power, the Sahaku family is eager to turn the war to their advantage, and through it seize control. Not possessing much in the way of independent military strength, their focus is on information trafficking and political manipulation.

Rondo Gina Sahaku

Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita

The head of the Sahaku family. It was he that commissioned the construction of the Astray Frames alongside the GAT-X machines, and he pilots the Astray Gold Frame himself. He is highly aggressive and is not above allying with Blue Cosmos in order to gain control of Orb.

In Vs Astray, a Carbon clone of him appears as a member of Librarian, piloting the Astray Mirage Frame, looking to avenge his earlier death at the hands of Gai Murakamo.

  • Bio-Augmentation: He undergoes physical enhancements in order to pilot the Mirage Frame Second Issue, which ordinarily not even a Coordinator can pilot effectively.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: It's mentioned that most people are unsure as to whether he's a man or woman.
  • Half-Identical Twins: With his sister, Mina. Might be explained due to the two of them being Coordinators.
  • Killed Off for Real: His Carbon clone on the other hand...
  • Wicked Cultured: A lot of his equipment names come from Japanese terms and Shinto mythologies. He himself is very refined in expensive and royal clothing.

Rondo Mina Sahaku

Voiced by: Masako Katsuki

Rondo Gina's twin sister, she inherits the position as head of the Sahaku family following Gina's death, not to mention the Gold Frame. While still ambitious, she does not resort to the same underhanded tactics her brother did. She despises Lowe for his hand in Gina's death, but is willing to put aside her grudge if they need to work together.

Kisaka in SEED Destiny

Click here to see Kisaka in SEED

An officer in Orb's military and initially bodyguard to Cagalli in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He may be from North Africa, but his Japanese last name and Russian first name leave his ethnicity up in the air.
  • Badass Normal: He is comparatively understated but nonetheless capable of holding his own against Coordinators.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: He may protect Cagalli, but she's not your average helpless VIP.
  • The Captain: Of the Kusanagi at the end of SEED, through Cagalli is the one giving orders until she sorties with the Strike Rouge in the final battle.
  • Colonel Badass: His rank in the Orb army. Easy to forget since most of the time he's chaperoning Cagalli.
  • Heroic Build: Kisaka is very large and muscular, easy to see given Sleeves Are for Wimps during the first half of the show.
  • Immigrant Patriotism: He is originally from North Africa but he is loyal to Orb.
  • La Résistance: Part of Desert Dawn until he left for Orb.
  • Last-Name Basis: No one calls him by his first name.
  • Mythology Gag: For Gundam Wing. Much like Cagalli is Quatre and Uzumi is Mr. Winner, Kisaka's Heroic Build and role looking after Cagalli and supervising her fighting forces are meant to reference leader of the Maganacs Rashid Kurama.
  • Put on a Bus: At the start of SEED Destiny, he is noticeably absent. His bodyguard position was taken by Athrun. Only for him to reappear just before the final act, resuming his former position of bodyguard for Cagalli till the end of the show.
  • Small Role, Big Impact:
    • In SEED Destiny, he rescued Athrun and Meyrin, saving the former will prove instrumental in Durandal's defeat at the end of the show when he defeated Shinn. And as in SEED Freedom will show, both Athrun and Meyrin will be very helpful to Compass in general.
    • In SEED Freedom, he joins Kira on Lacus' rescue mission. Lacus will then publicly reject the Foundation's ideals and the Final Battle quickly turn to the heroes' favor with her personally helping Kira with the Proud Defender.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Athha family. He is mostly seen on Cagalli's side. In SEED Freedom, he was glad to lend a hand to Kira, Cagalli's brother, as well.
  • Whole Costume Reference: To Rambo.
  • Why Do You Keep Changing Jobs?: First he's Cagalli's bodyguard, then he's a high-ranking member of Orb's military, then he ends up as captain of the Kusanagi with the handful of Orb military personnel that fled to space with Cagalli at the end of SEED. Then in SEED Destiny, he reappears as an Earth Alliance officer, saving Athrun and Meyrin only to be back as Cagalli's bodyguard at the end of the show. And finally in SEED Freedom, he, along with Kira and a group of Orb soldiers, infiltrates the Artemis fortress to rescue Lacus, serving as a foot soldier like in his first appearance.
  • Would Hit a Girl: In SEED Freedom, during Lacus' rescue mission, he shot Ingrid non-lethally to make her drop her gun, he even tackled her and held her at gunpoint to ensure Lacus' safety.

    Todaka

Rank: Captain → Admiral (posthumously promoted)

Voiced by: Kazuya Ichijō (Japanese); Fred Henderson [Ocean dub], Jason Griffith [NYAV Post dub] (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/todaka_destiny.png
"I'm counting on you, Freedom."

Todaka was a high-ranking officer of the Orb Union military in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. He was one of his country's battlefield commanders and always carried out the orders given to him, even if he disagrees with them. Though he may appear single-mindedly obedient in the series, he is not without any opposing views against Orb's leadership that consolidated itself by joining the Earth Alliance especially under its self-serving representative, Yuna Roma Seiran.

  • A Father to His Men: Very much. He genuinely cares for his crew and is not happy about the senseless loss of his fellow soldiers due to Yuna's incompetence in battle. This comes to a head when he orders his men to abandon ship while he remains on board and takes the blame for Orb's defeat at the hands of the Minerva.
  • The Captain: Of an Aegis-class cruiser and later the Takemikazuchi aircraft carrier.
  • Deathbed Promotion: In SEED Freedom, He was posthumously promoted to admiral.
  • Death by Irony: Shinn kills him, although neither Todaka nor Shinn were aware of each other at that point.
  • Going Down with the Ship: Taking the blame for his ship's defeat at the hands of the Minerva, he orders his whole crew to escape the aircraft carrier while he stays on board as Shinn's Impulse Gundam (carrying its sword pack) finishes off his heavily damaged ship.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He orders his crew to flee while he remains behind and accountable for Orb's defeat against the Minerva in SEED Destiny.
  • Must Let Them Get Away: He lets the Archangel escape from Orb after kidnapping Cagalli in SEED Destiny.
  • Pet the Dog: In a flashback, he tried to comfort Shinn after he lost his parents.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Very sound in judgment and willing to listen to his subordinates.
  • Reluctant Warrior: He very much believes in Orb's original ideals but is involved in Orb's alliance with the Earth Alliance and is forced into battles he wouldn't willingly participate in.
  • Suicide by Cop: Possibly. Trapped between his My Country, Right or Wrong mentality and a criminally incompetent head of state, he orders his lightly-armed aircraft carrier to make a frontal attack on the enemy's most advanced battleship. Even the captain of said enemy warship is baffled.
  • Try Not to Die: Under orders he has to order his own fleet to open fire on Cagalli in her Strike Rouge and hopes the Freedom can save her.

    Amagi

Rank: Lieutenant

Voiced by: Susumu Chiba (Japanese); Jason Simpson [Ocean dub], Doug Erholtz [NYAV Post dub] (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amagi_destiny.png

The second-in-command of Todaka in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

  • Communications Officer: Amagi serves as this for the Archangel when he joined them and later for the Kusanagi in the final battle of SEED Destiny.
  • Going Down with the Ship: Averted. Amagi offered to stay with Todaka on the sinking Takemikazuchi but the latter orders him to join the Archangel as atonement for their defeat and to have opened fire on Cagalli.
  • Number Two: Of Captain Todoka.
  • Rank Up: Play with it. In SEED Freedom, He is still a lieutenant but he has been promoted to captain of Kusanagi and lead Orb's space fleet to war again The Foundation
  • Undying Loyalty: Eventually develops this for Cagalli. this extends to Kira as well.

    Soga

Rank: Colonel

Voice actors: Tadahisa Saizen (Japanese); Brian Dobson [Ocean dub], Christopher Bevins [NYAV Post dub] (English)

An Orb officer stationned in the Orb headquarters during the battle of Orb in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

  • The Captain: Of the Kusanagi in the final battle of SEED Destiny, replacing Kisaka who stays at Orb with Cagalli.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: During the battle of Orb in SEED Destiny, Yuna berates Soga and his men for the situation he himself caused, frustrating him and his men. When Cagalli came back with her Akatsuki and reassumes control of Orb, the second she orders Yuna's arrest, Soga happily complied with her order by punching Yuna in the face, followed by his men dog-piling him.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: During the ZAFT attack on Orb, Soga was forced to obey the incompetent Yuna during the battle... Until Cagalli came back and retook control of Orb. After this, Soga averts this trope and stays loyal to Cagalli till the end of the show.

Mayura, Asagi, and Juri respectively

Asagi Caldwell, Mayura Labatt, and Juri Wu Nien are three young Morgenroete employees in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and test pilots for Erica Simmons, and friendly with Cagalli. When Orb is attacked by the Atlantic Federation and the Kusanagi escapes to space, they end up piloting in combat.

  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Asagi's the blonde, Mayura's the redhead, and Juri is a bluenette.
  • Good Counterpart: To Azrael's druggie squad in SEED.
  • Mauve Shirt: They're there as friendly, brave characters in the background for several episodes before they all die individually at Jachin Due at the end of SEED. Although they are both professionals and her friends, Cagalli comments bluntly (and slightly ominously) before the Final Battle that she, an amateur with no actual mobile suit combat experience, is a much better pilot.
  • Mythology Gag: Although fewer in number, they're based off the all-female Shrike Team of Victory Gundam. Who are also all killed in combat.
  • Shipper on Deck: In the novellization of SEED, they were supporting Athrun and Cagalli. All three of them were teasing Athrun and Cagalli for being a couple during Cagalli's practice session with her Strike Rouge and Athrun helping her with his Justice, much to her embarrassement.

A first lieutenant in Orb’s military, he participates in the battle against the Minerva at Crete in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Others

    Merna

Cagalli's nanny who has cared for her since she was a child.

  • Brawn Hilda: She's plump but quite strong; she one of the few people who can (and not afraid to) strongarm Cagalli.
  • Insistent Appellation: "Cagalli-ojousama" ("Young Lady Cagalli") and "Hime" ("Princess"), much to Cagalli's annoyance and embarrassment. By SEED Destiny, this extends to Cagalli's twin brother Kira ("Master Kira").
  • Parental Substitute: More or less the only mother figure in Cagalli's life, since there's no information about Uzumi ever having been married.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is always ready to help Cagalli and her family overall.

    Erica Simmons

The chief engineer of Orb's nationalized defense company Morgenroete, Erica Simmons is responsible for the production of the country's own mobile suits, the mass-produced Astrays. She follows Cagalli into space on the Kusanagi with several employees in order to supervise the deployment of Orb's only fighting force.

  • Crazy-Prepared: In SEED Freedom, under Cagalli's orders, she had the Strike Freedom Type II, Destiny Spec II, and Impulse Spec II all ready to go, with extra weapons, in particular railguns to counter the Femto Technology armor the Foundation uses, when the latter betrayed Compass.
  • The Engineer: She's so high up in authority that we don't actually see her being a Wrench Wench, however designing the Astrays probably qualifies her as a Gadgeteer Genius.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: The most prominent English-speaking Gundam fan, Mark Simmons, who has worked for Bandai on several occasions.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Kira has his services 'voluntold' to Morgenroete in exchange for aid to the Archangel, but Erica's very polite and friendly to him and doesn't make it feel onerous, nor does she comment anything but positively on needing a Coordinator's help to solve things despite obviously being an extremely skilled Coordinator programmer herself.
  • The Smart Girl: She's the brains and much of the knowledge around Morgenroete, although Erica also seems to be privy to knowledge of which most people are not aware, commenting on Cagalli's upbringing and childhood, as well as being the only character other than Reverend Malchio to speak of the SEED factor, explaining it for the audience in a bit more detail.
  • Team Mom: To the Astray Girls in SEED, and surprisingly literally when she takes her young son into space with her, having apparently decided with her husband their child would be safer with her (although we don't know what her husband does, they do seem to be Happily Married).
