Main Characters

    Lenna

Lenna

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lennaportraits_70.png
The main character. A teacher who, one day while teaching her students, finds her school glitching, and her students trapped inside. While trying to teach the hero Lance, he's killed by a random monster, and she is then forced to save the world by herself.
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: After collecting memories from the eight archangels, Lenna realises she was originally the Final Boss of her world, and was turned into a human by arbitrary code execution. She's horrified that she once enjoyed hurting people.
  • Badass Teacher: She transitions from teaching in a school, to directly instructing The Chosen One, to taking up the latter's role when he and the village elder are suddenly killed.
  • Devilish Hair Horns: She has small tufts at the sides of her hair that resemble horns, and her true form is the leader of the Archangels, the world's original final boss that plotted to kill humanity.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After dying and respawning countless times, and being forced to kill her students, the Archangels, in numerous playthroughs, she discovers a debug menu after (possibly) sparing the Chairman and Delvin. With it, she fights the source of the glitches, 8Fridge, allowing her to continue living as a human with her lover Paige, along with the other Archangels. They also have enough pizza to sate the Archangels' hunger.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: You can change her name which leads to some interesting Easter Eggs.
  • Medium Awareness: When confronting Delvin, who believes that her death is necessary to restore the world, she can retort that it can't be because she's personally experienced continuing from a Game Over screen.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Lenna was the leader of the Archangels, and the true Final Boss of the world, whose power was taken by Delvin's glitching. Her memories of teaching students were actually her instructing her minions.
  • The Unchosen One: She was just supposed to instruct Lance, The Chosen One, but takes his place after an unforeseen incident.

    Henrietta

Henrietta

A chicken that follows Lenna. It eventually becomes her pet.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Henrietta turns out to be a slime monster that was transformed into a chicken by a glitch. It's possible to put her into a hybrid state with the right item, giving her a massive attack boost while keeping her feathery appearance and loyalty to Lenna.
  • It's Personal: During the final battle with Delvin, a transformed Henrietta will be the only ally who does not run from the boss, and in fact seems to attack him more aggressively than normal. There is even an achievement for bringing her to the battle. She apparently did not like being turned into a chicken by Delvin as an experiment in the first place.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": Henrietta the hen.

    Bruce

Bruce

A bat that can be purchased from a shop or found in the overworld to be recruited as a companion.

    Gourdon

Gourdon

An orange gourd that can be purchased from a shop or found in the overworld and brought to life as a companion.

    Paige

Paige

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/paigeportraits_4.png
A librarian with a love of books. She first helps Lenna on her quest by adding dungeon locations to her map, but if Lenna collects a couple of missing tomes, she'll be encouraged to become an ally and help track down the rest.
  • Badass Bookworm: You're able to recruit her as your companion once you have enough books and not only does she have the highest health, she is the only one with a ranged attack and can beat monsters down by rapidly hurling her books across without easily damaging herself.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: In the Perfect ending, she has one with Lenna, causing a heart to float from the pair.
  • Cute Bookworm: A librarian whose side-quest involves reclaiming her books.
  • Did You Just Romance Cthulhu?: Completing her side-quests has her admit her feelings for Lenna. The fact that Lenna was formerly the Final Boss says volumes about it. In New Groan Plus' version of the Perfect Ending, Lenna will regain her Archangel Form after Paige kisses her, and Paige will have even more hearts floating above her
  • Optional Character Scene: She's the only partner who can talk, so she adds extra dialogue to major cutscenes if she's currently following Lenna.

    Shadow Lenna
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadowportraits.png
A Living Shadow that was supposed to be just an optional mini-boss for Lance. However, when Lenna shows up in his place, she decides not to follow her original script and becomes the co-op character.
  • Devilish Hair Horns: Shadow Lenna has these in 8-bit mode, which fits because not only does Lenna has hair tufts that look like devil horns, but also because she was supposed to fight against Lance with the intent to kill.
  • Holy Halo: In the 32-bit mode, Shadow Lenna has a growth on her head that resembles a halo; in addition to being a parallel to Lenna, who still has hair horns in this art style, it also reflects how she's willing to defy her nature as a boss and cooperate with Lenna to save the world.
  • Living Shadow: Her true form is a black mist that can morph to resemble the person that unseals her from her shrine, with the intention for a boss fight.

Archangels

The main bosses of the game. They are responsible for the spreading of monsters throughout the world.
    As a whole
  • Boss Subtitles: One appears for every fight, showing their name and a brief description.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: Most of their second forms die after one hit.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In the Perfect Ending, they will learn to live in peace with the humans, thanks to Lenna showing them compassion in battle.
  • One-Winged Angel: Any boss fought as part of the final four will have a second, more unholy, glitch form.

    Azraflail

Azraflail - Knight of Death

A living suit of armor that swings a giant flail in circles. She is always the boss of Dungeon 1.
  • Back for the Finale: She suddenly reappears with Tentaluchus if the player is on track to get the Perfect ending, begging Lenna to not reset the game.
  • Warmup Boss: She's set to be the first boss of every run (whereas the second through seventh bosses are random), and has an easily-avoidable attack pattern.

    Crabaddon

Crabaddon - Doomsday Crab

A crab whose weak points are inside his claws and mouth.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's not exactly the brightest of Archangels. A Corrupted Memory shows that he knows his weak points are exposed when his claws and mouth are wide open, but isn't able to figure out that means he should keep them closed during a fight.

    Catsiel

Catsiel - Murder Tabby

A giant cat that wears a TV monitor on its head. In 8-bit mode, it's an even older television model, with a giant eyeball for a head.
  • Cats Are Mean: If the title "Murder Tabby" is any indication...
  • Expressive Mask: The display on her screen will change during the battle, giving the players tells. Subverted in 8-bit mode, where her body gives the tells instead.
  • Konami Code: Her possible second form displays the arrow part of the code on its screen, and a warping joystick must be hit in the corresponding directions to beat her.
  • Giant Eye of Doom: In 8-bit mode, it looks like one of these are staring back at you through a television screen... except when she launches the TV at you, it reveals she has one of these instead of a head.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Not her actual name, but her epithet: Murder Tabby.
  • Non-Human Head: Subverted. It's just a really expressive mask hiding her normal cat head.
  • One-Winged Angel: If fought as one of the final four, she will transform into a massive monitor stuck in place, infinitely spawning glitch monsters. In 8-bit mode, she just has a glitched cat's body and an eyeball to act as the joystick. Still shows the Konami Code through a speech bubble, though.

    Headraniel

Headraniel - Rock Noggin

A floating statue that throws skulls, but falls to pieces when they're thrown back. In 8-bit mode, he's a giant, floating skull riding a large Tibia and wearing gag glasses.
  • Blow You Away: He has a propeller, which he'll try to use to blow Lenna into the empty chasm bellow.
  • One-Winged Angel: If fought as one of the final four, he will transform into a glitching head that is surrounded by skulls. In 8-bit mode, it's just the skull alone randomly glitching.

    Santaquiel

Santaquiel - Giver of Unwanted Gifts

A caped snowman that tosses explosive gifts.
  • Bad Santa: A Santa-theme Snowman that throws explosive gifts at his enemies.
  • Kill It with Fire: Defeating him requires the Lighter.
  • Logical Weakness: Given that snow melts in the heat, it makes sense that fire kills him.
  • One-Winged Angel: If fought as one of the final four, he will transform into a demonic-looking Krampus that attacks by rushing at Lenna, creating ice spikes in his wake.
  • Snowlems: More or less one with a Santa Claus theme.
  • Weapons-Grade Vocabulary: One of his attacks is uttering "ho, ho, ho"; each word manifests as projectiles he will hurl Lenna.

    Tentaluchus

Tentaluchus - Subterranean Squid

A subterranean squid that can drill into the earth.
  • Back for the Finale: He suddenly reappears with Azraflail if the player is on track to get the Perfect ending, begging Lenna to not reset the game.
  • Big Eater: One of the Corrupted Memories shows him and his master ordering a pizza as a reward for training hard, only to spook the deliveryman by trying to eat him as well.
  • One-Winged Angel: If fought as one of the final four, he will transform into a UFO.
  • Screw Destiny: Lampshaded when he pleads to Lenna right before she resets the game.

    Sandolphin

Sandolphin - Serpentine Dolphin

A dolphin/snake hybrid fought in a room filled with water.
  • One-Winged Angel: If fought as one of the final four, she will transform into a two-headed creature connected by a strand of orbs in the middle.

    Hatasiah

Hatasiah - Vampire Magician

A bat-headed magician that shifts between dimensions. She is always the boss of Dungeon 8.
  • Cool Mask: Wears one of these in her fight. It comes off when she's stunned, revealing her bat face beneath. In 8-bit mode, looks more like a masquerade ball mask, a la Tuxedo Mask.
  • Hat of Power: Wears a snazzy top hat. It can even fly around and summon bats to fight you.
  • Implied Death Threat: "Pay close attention while I make a human disappear!" And Lenna happens to be a human, so...
  • Magicians Are Wizards: At least when Hatasiah performs magic.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: She's the smallest of all of the Archangels. She also has the largest number of attack patterns and she has to go through ALL of them before you have a chance to stun her, and you can only damage her while she's stunned. There's a reason Hatasiah is always the last Archangel you fight in story mode.
  • Stage Magician: Hatasiah dresses and acts like one.

    []{, ?%[

[]{,_?%[ - Mother of Archangels

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/archangelmotherportraits.png
Click to see the archangel uncloaked
The leader of the Archangels, seen in Corrupted Memories that have glitched out her name.
  • Black Cloak: Wears one of these until the last recovered memory. It makes her look like a Grim Reaper.
  • Devilish Hair Horns: Once she is uncloaked, it's revealed she has gigantic hair horns which help indicate her evil nature and the connection to Lenna's current form.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She truly does care for the Archangels she created. She tries to train them how to defend themselves and rewards them for doing a good job. You can even find a book that is her shopping list of Christmas gifts to buy for all eight of them! It's also a hint for what items you need to acquire in order to get the best ending.
  • Evil Orphan: Heavily implied. In Dungeon 9, one of the rooms has the skeletal corpse of a dead Archangel and the skull of another, with a lone, hatched egg in the back. Lenna, who at this point has been revealed to be the Archangel of the same name, cries uncontrollably as long as she is in the same room. It can be inferred that her plot was an act of revenge on humans for killing her parents.
  • Hates Being Alone: She originally created the other Archangels, so that she wouldn't be alone. Even then, she and her minions were still feared by humanity.
  • Not Quite Dead: Her first appearance in a Corrupted Memory has her declare revenge on humanity after they attempted to slay her pupa form.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Is this underneath her cloak.
  • The Reveal: The final Corrupted Memory shows her un-corrupted name: Lenna.
  • Sinister Scythe: Carries one with her at all times.
  • Tentacled Terror: Her body ends in tentacles where one would normally have legs and feet instead. When wearing her cloak, it looks like she has this for a face but its really just strands of her red hair.
  • Tom the Dark Lord: Who would have guessed that the Mother of Archangels would have a normal name like Lenna?
  • Villains Out Shopping: She surprisingly has no problems ordering pizza with a cellphone and would have eventually gone out to buy Christmas gifts for her Archangels if not for an untimely interference by Delvin.

NPCs

    Lance

Lance

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lanceportraits.png
The Chosen One. Unfortunately, the corrupted state of the world prevents him from coming back after an untimely death, causing his current mentor Lenna to take his place.
  • The Chosen One: At least, this is what he was supposed to be.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Dies before even completing "his" tutorial.
  • Dumb Struck: The first Corrupted Memory reveals that he could talk... until his father Claymore passes away.
  • Expy: Of Link from The Legend of Zelda. He's a tunic-wearing Heroic Mime who fights a piggish villain that kidnapped a royal figure.
  • Heroic Mime: Just like whom he's based off of. He wasn't always like this though.
  • One-Hit-Point Wonder: Killed by a slime (the weakest enemy) falling on his head, and fails to revive.
  • Theme Naming: The first Corrupted Memory shows that his father was named Claymore, and his mother was Stiletto, which are also types of weapons.

    Jesse

Jesse The Elder

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elderportraits.png
The leader of the human village. Although he's found dead in his cave, he seems capable of providing guidance as a spirit.
  • Eyes Always Shut: The only character like this which adds to his wise demeanour.
  • No Kill like Overkill: When Lenna finds him, there's blood everywhere. It even spells out "It's dangerous to go alo-".
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The first Corrupted Memory has Lance's father call him Jesse, but text boxes only refer to him as "Elder".
  • Spirit Advisor: His ghost briefly appears to encourage the Hero to embark on their adventure, though he does it via phone, and thus isn't aware that he's speaking to Lenna instead of Lance. However, the restored Power of Truth reveals that this was actually Delvin trying to manipulate her.
  • Technologically Blind Elders: He's not really convinced by Delvin trying to pitch 8Fridge to him partly because of this, even asking the researcher if it has the ability of the Power of Truth.

    Prince Daniel

Prince Daniel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princeportraits.png
The ruler of the island. Most of his guards have revolted against him and allied with the chairman after he is unable to pay them. They have trapped him in his own castle.
  • Distressed Dude: His kidnapping by the Chairman instigates the main plot.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: He holds the Power of Compassion, which allows him to be an empathetic leader and is vital to getting the best ending.

    Professor Maxwell

Professor Maxwell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/professorportraits.png
A genius inventor, whose creations include an earthquake generator and a teleportation machine, the latter of which is mandatory to reach a dungeon blocked by glitches.

    The Chairman

The Chairman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chairmanportraits.png
The leader of the Banker's Guild. A normal human corrupted by greed, who works alongside the Archangels for even greater profits. He stages a coup against the prince when the prince is unable to repay his own guards.
  • Money Mauling: Assaults Lenna with piles of coins upon confronting her at the bridge to the eastern part of the kingdom.
  • One-Winged Angel: When finally cornered in the Palace, his greed transforms him into Chairman M/Gammon - Capitalist Pig.
  • Only in It for the Money: The Chairman, already the wealthiest man on the island, sided with the Archangels after being given access to their Money Spider cash generation.

    Delvin (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Delvin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/delvin.png
An assistant researcher to Professor Maxwell, and the Elder's acolyte. Initially surprised that Lance was killed, he encourages Lenna to kill the Archangels in his place and help restore normality to the world.
  • Accidental Murder: After arguing with and abandoning Maxwell, he tried to demonstrate the power of glitches to the Elder. This incident, while empowering Delvin and depowering the intended Final Boss, appears to be the reason the Elder died.
  • Final Boss Preview: Very early into the game, his Archangel form is seen by Lenna before teleporting away.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: After accidentally creating an all-powerful refrigerator via storing an overflow of pizza, he used it to steal an Archangel's power and glitched the world in the process.
  • It's All About Me: His boss, Professor Maxwell, warned him of the danger of glitches, but he ignored them and endangered the world in pursuit of power to surpass the Archangels. When the world became too glitchy to survive, he convinced himself that it could be fixed by murdering the bosses, either unaware or uncaring that he'd become one himself.
  • Treacherous Advisor: First he sealed his boss Prof. Maxwell underground when the latter deemed his foray into glitches too dangerous. Then he tries to guide "the hero" to kill the Archangels, first as the Elder's spirit and then as his acolyte
  • Walking Spoiler: It's not revealed until towards the end just how important he is in the grand scheme of things.

    The Glitched Object (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

8Fridge - Deus Hex Machina

Once a normal fridge in a video game world, it was turned into an engine of glitches after a pizza delivery man gave Delvin too many pizzas.
  • Interface Screw: And how! As soon as it reclaims the MissingGlasses, it makes your item count meaningless, creates a form out of your item slots and hearts, and even hurls dungeon tiles at you.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Like Catsiel, it's not its name but its epitaph that's terrifying. A direct translation would be something like "God Curse Machine".
  • Ominous Latin Chanting: Downplayed. The quieter parts of its battle theme in 32-bit mode has a deep voice chanting "Deus Hex Machina" rhythmically.
  • Sheathe Your Sword: During the first phase of its battle, multiple Lenna clones will fight you with whatever you are equipped with. In order to get past this section, you must first equip Lenna will non-lethal items, then equip "none" as your sword. With no way to fight back, the Lenna clones will drop dead, allowing the player to move to the next phase of the fright.
  • This Was His True Form: A variant. You don't actually kill it, but you do eventually find its true form, a simple fridge, in a black, empty room, which allows Lenna to remove the excess pizzas and set things right. Presumedly this would also turn it back into a normal fridge.
  • True Final Boss: Fought within Dungeon 9, trying to defend itself from Lenna by summoning corrupted versions of the Elder, Lenna herself, and Lance.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's the cause of the entire kingdom glitching out, no thanks to Devlin exploiting it.
