Main Cast (in order of billing)

    Captain Bob Smith

Captain Robert "Bob" Smith

Played by: Bruce Campbell
  • Battle Couple: With Shauna.
  • The Captain: Of the Muffin.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: On a fairly large scale, as he plays this role to his entire crew.
  • Cunning Linguist: Bob got a lot of mileage out of that Complex Linguistics course at the Academy. He understands Cat, Wookiee, several other strange languages, and even figures out a way to communicate with the Lenseflarians.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Possibly the snarkiest person on his ship, and that's honestly saying something.
  • Genre Savvy: Captain Smith knows damn well that he's in a sci-fi comedy, and he's more than capable of using that knowledge to his advantage.
  • Guile Hero: While he's capable of holding his own in a straight fight, where Bob truly shines is when he's got a good bluff and a straight face. His favorite tactics include the Engineered Public Confession and weaponized Genre Savvy.
  • Inappropriately Close Comrades: He and Shauna actually subvert this, since as a Naval Captain and a Marine Colonel they're technically in different chains of command and of equivalent rank. Not that they'd care even if it was against regulations, given how nothing else on the ship follows the rules that often.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He doesn't come across as stupid, but he's still a lot smarter than people give him credit for.
Bob: "You'd be surprised by how clueless I'm not."
Belinda: "I think most people would be."
Bob: "Good. Let's keep it that way."
  • Only Sane Man: On the Dysfunction Junction that is the Muffin.
  • Psychic Block Defense: Marty and Belinda tried teaching Bob some Force techniques early on, but this is the only one he really managed to master. It comes in handy for when he's the Secret-Keeper for classified operations like Marty's time as The Mole in the Sith.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Brazenly defies Alliance authorities by routinely harboring Jedi and other fugitives on his ship, going on unsanctioned missions to save the galaxy, and openly rebelling against the Alliance's frequent Tyrant Takes the Helm moments, like the Sith takeover of Seasons 5-9.

    Lieutenant (later Commander) Marty Jasper

Commander Martin "Marty" Jasper/Darth Noyance

Played by: Ted Raimi
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Marty is famously kind of a dumbass, especially in earlier seasons, but underneath the moronic tendencies is a fully qualified Jedi Knight with the skills to back it up.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Turns to the Dark Side and joins the Sith at the end of Season 5.
    • Heel–Face Turn: At the top of Season 8 it's actually subverted; it turns out he was never truly evil in the first place and was actually The Mole in the Sith, but he and Captain Smith were the only ones who knew.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: He takes a lot of shit from just about everyone in the early seasons, which he factors into his decision to turn to The Dark Side.
  • Naked People Are Funny: A Running Gag dating back to the very first strip. Doesn't come up as often as it did in the earliest days, but it's practically a tradition for the anniversary strips.
  • Never Live It Down: That time he started the Synari War way back in Season 1.
  • Number Two: His position in the Muffin's hierarchy.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He's not quite as dumb as he looks.
  • Rank Up: A very overdue one in S 9 E 15 "Homecoming", where he gets promoted directly from Lieutenant to Commander, skipping the rank of Lieutenant Commander entirely. He gets a second one later that same episode, when he's officially promoted from Jedi Knight to Jedi Master.
  • Shock and Awe: He's proficient in Force Lightning.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Big time, after he becomes Darth Noyance.

    Dr. Belinda Reines

Commander Belinda Reines

Played by: Amy Acker
  • Action Girl: Belinda may just be the most powerful Jedi Master alive.
  • The Chessmaster: The entirety of Season 15 went according to her plan.
  • The Corruptible: Having witnessed the perpendicular timeline with Darth Malignant firsthand, she knows just how at-risk of falling to The Dark Side she is, and she makes an effort to better understand and control her own inner darkness as a result.
  • Deadpan Snarker: One of the best.
  • Double Weapon: Her weapon is a double-bladed lightsaber.
  • Dr. Jerk: Her bedside manner is more than a little abraisive.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Gets thrown several thousand years into the past in Season 9, causing most of the main cast (and Dr. Notio) to enlist the help of various experienced Time Travelers in an attempt to bring her home. The Doctor manages to find her, and she spends several episodes traveling along as his Companion before returning to the Muffin in 2356.
  • Healing Factor: Visions of Master Hito eventually teach her how to use the Force to heal herself when seriously wounded.
  • The Medic: Her role on the ship.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother Wilhelmina has been missing since she was a child. She doesn't even know if she's still alive until Season 11, and even then she only knows that she's alive; she doesn't know where to start looking.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her father, notorious Space Pirate Red Beard, went on the run from the dismemberment-happy Captain Bly when she was a young child. Her mother vanished under far more mysterious circumstances shortly after.
  • Super Doc: In the grand tradition of sci-fi Chief Medical Officers, Belinda is the best doctor to treat any physical ailment, with the only thing in her way being her not-infrequent Jedi-related absences from the ship.

    Colonel Shauna Finelli

Colonel Shauna Finelli

Played by: Jewel Staite
  • Battle Couple: With Bob.
  • Colonel Badass: Is a Colonel in the Alliance Marines and one of the most badass characters in the strip.
  • Famous Ancestor: Her mother's maiden name is Stark, and she's kept the ancestral Power Armor in storage for use in times of dire need. The rise of The King in Yellow qualifies, and the Mark 42 ends up being instrumental in the plan to take him down.
    • In one Second String strip, she convinces the Doctor to take her back to meet some of her personal heroes, beginning with Tony Stark.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Famously able to turn a toaster into a functioning warp drive.
  • Inappropriately Close Comrades: She and Bob actually subvert this, since as a Marine Colonel and a Naval Captain they're technically in different chains of command and of equivalent rank. Not that they'd care even if it was against regulations, given how nothing else on the ship follows the rules that often.
  • Wrench Wench: The Chief Engineer, often seen with a wrench in her hand.

    Counselor Alice Tolman

Lieutenant Commander Alice Tolman

Played by: Amy Adams
  • The Heart: Notably the only member of the main cast who is not useful in a fight, but at the same time her role as the counselor helps bring out the best in the rest of the cast.
  • The Shrink: Generally falls into the Well-Meaning but Ineffective type, although she has her Awesome moments.
  • There Are No Therapists: Brought aboard specifically to avert this. Of course, she's got a host of issues of her own, and Angrius points out that she has no one to go to.

    Chief 4675636 B

Security Chief 4675636B

Played by: John DiMaggio
  • Cluster F-Bomb: His usual speech patterns.
  • Hidden Depths: His abrasive exterior hides some surprising insecurities, which are on display in the episode "Silicon Heart".

    Commander TAG

Commander Snoogiewoogielar "TAG"

    Major Johnny Danger

Major Jovica "Johnny" Danger

Played by: Edward Kerr

Ensign (later Lieutenant J.G.) Skip Tyler

Lieutenant Steven Logan "Skip" Tyler

Played by: David Tennant
  • Big Brother Instinct: Is very protective of his younger sister Valerie.
  • Communications Officer: His role on the Muffin.
  • Motor Mouth: To the point of incomprehensibility. His dialogue is written with no spaces.
  • My Parents Are Dead: They died in an accident when he and his sister Valerie were young. Valerie later discovers evidence that they were murdered in "Fulcrum".
  • Playful Hacker: Skip is very good at getting computers to do what he wants them to. Whenever Robin needs to put together a Caper Crew, Skip is his go-to Hacker.
  • Rank Up: From Ensign to Lieutenant Junior Grade in S 7 E 8 "The Shroud of the Dark Side", alongside Robin.
  • Spanner in the Works: Darth Pestilous cites getting her messages out past Skip as the hardest part of her infiltration of the Muffin.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After he learns that his parents were murdered, not killed in an accident like he'd always believed, he asks Belinda to teach him how to fight.

Lieutenant (later Lieutenant Commander) Robin Cunningham

Lieutenant Commander Robin Cunningham

Played by: Wil Wheaton
  • Absurd Phobia: His initial character gimmick. Robin is afraid of ladybugs, milk, you name it.
  • Cassandra Truth: Part of how he survives months of 2 + Torture = 5: when asked to give the password to the computer lockout, he yells a nonsense phrase at his captors instead to taunt them. Once he's rescued, he gives Skip the code to take control of the master computer. It's the same nonsense phrase he'd been yelling all that time, complete with a reference to the former Trope Name of 2 + Torture = 5: "There Are Four Lights."
  • The Chessmaster: By Season 11, he's evolved into one on par with the likes of Nate Ford, first shown with the masterful rescue of Skip's sister in "Fulcrum".
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: His Evil Uncle was a Mad Scientist who would habitually torture young Robin until he was a nervous wreck. Most of his Absurd Phobias can be traced back to his uncle's treatment of him.
  • Rank Up: From Lieutenant to Lieutenant Commander in S 7 E 8 "The Shroud of the Dark Side", alongside Skip.
  • Seen It All: After the years of torment from his Evil Uncle, when he is captured and subjected to 2 + Torture = 5, he doesn't break because compared to his childhood it's not actually that bad.

    Ensign Red Shirt

Ensign Red Shirt

Played by: Justin Long
  • Cannon Fodder: Pretty much his designated role on the ship. His unique collection of traits tends to both draw fire to himself and make him relatively easy to patch up afterwards.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: Most things directly involving Red are, naturally, red. The Red Knights, Red Squadron, etc. Also, he's almost always seen wearing red, even if it's his civilian clothes or a Custom Uniform.
  • Cosmic Plaything: The universe really has it out for the poor guy.
  • Death Is Cheap: He gets killed on a regular basis, but Dr. Reines always manages to patch him back up.
  • Happily Married: To Cindy Wright, as of S 10 E 13 "When You're Right, Shut Up".
  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: After being directly exposed to the madness of Carcossa, Red's mind is absolute hell for an unsuspecting telepath to probe.
  • Red Shirt: An out-and-out parody of the trope. He dies in most of his appearances only to come back to life or be healed. This is attributed both to a family lineage of being incredibly prone to die and the fact he wears a red shirt, which is the cause of "Red Shirt Syndrome", as it's called in-universe. It's powerful enough to bend laser-beams to make them hit him instead of the people it was aimed at.
  • They Killed Kenny: Tends to die or at least get injured or maimed every time he shows up.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: Very close to literal, but it's actually Azathoth who eats him and then spits him back up.
  • Took a Level in Badass: To the point where he's able to go toe-to-toe with Darth Creepius and not only survive but actually pull out a win. Twice.

    The Muffin

The Alliance Star Ship Muffin XFB-1981-B

  • Cool Starship: One of the Alliance's best ships, constantly being improved by Shauna.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Just look at the rest of this page.
  • Legacy Vessel Naming: The original Muffin is actually destroyed early in Season 2; the current ship, the Muffin-B, is the third ship to bear the name. (The Muffin-A was around for all of two panels before Marty accidentally blew it up).

Recurring Crew

    Dr. Malcom Notio

Dr. Malcom Notio

Played by: Scott Bakula
  • Ascended Extra: He's introduced as another scientist at a scientific convention that Belinda and Alice attend while they wait for the new Muffin to be constructed. Once aboard, they learn that Malcom has also been assigned to the Muffin-B as Head of Research.
  • Ditzy Genius: He comes by his doctorates legitimately, but his peers often question how he got that far.
  • Mad Scientist: The head of the Muffin's Research department.
  • Meaningful Name: "Mal Notio" is Latin for "Bad Idea".
  • The Medic: Early on, he's left in charge of Sickbay whenever Belinda is unavailable. This lasts until Dr. Oon is brought aboard specifically to take over that role.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: To the point that people often ask him what his doctorate is actually in.

Space Ninjas

Tropes that apply to the Space Ninjas as a whole
  • Badass Crew: They've got their own ship and command structure outside of the Muffin, although they are still considered loyal crew members of the Muffin all the same.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Most of the Space Ninjas wear the same style of outfit, just in different colours. Jeff wears green, Stan wears grey, Mitch wears black, Sam wears blue, Betsy wears white, Huffington wears red, and Sofia wears purple.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Most Space Ninjas, upon completing their training, get to pick their "ninja name". Usually, this is a name unrelated to the name they had before becoming a Space Ninja, which hides The Reveal that Mitch the Ninja used to be Ligo Legomura.
  • Pirates Vs Ninjas: Space Ninjas have a long-standing and deep-seated enmity with the Space Pirates.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: An ability shared by all the Space Ninjas. You can tell a Space Ninja is exceptionally skilled if they can pull it off on other Space Ninjas.

    Jeff the Ninja
  • McNinja: The only of the Space Ninjas to explicitly not be of Japanese descent. The rest could go either way, except for Mitch, who is confirmed to be from Japan.
  • Punny Name: Only obvious when you draw the connection to the author's name, Dr. Jeftinija.

    Stan the Ninja
  • The Ditz: Easily the dumbest of the ninjas.

    Mitch the Ninja/Ligo Legomura
  • Time Travel: His personal superpower, unrelated to his ninja powers.

    Sam the Ninja
  • Remember the New Guy?: Makes his first appearance in a month of Second String comics, where he's implied to be someone the three established Ninjas have known all along.
  • The Smart Guy: He wears glasses, that's how you know he's smart.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Invoked. He doesn't actually need them but wears them because it's what's expected of him as The Smart Guy.

    Betsy the Ninja
  • Action Girl: Is a girl, is a ninja. Nuff said.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only girl in the main crew of Space Ninjas, and the only female Space Ninja at all until Sofia the Ninja is introduced.

Huffington Borroworth Morninglight III the Ninja

    Sofia the Ninja

Troopers

Tropes that apply to the Troopers as a whole
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: During the Second Resistance in Season 19, all of them have longer, more disheveled hair to show that they've been on the run for a while and haven't had a chance to stop and take care of themselves. (This was actually a Throw It In! because the author lost the old hair piece he had for Scout, so he just changed everyone's hair across the board.)
  • La Résistance: The specific unit referred to out-of-universe as the Troopers are the ones who led the Resistance on Coruscant against President Creepius in Season 8.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Or at least to the ice planet of Devlin, following their Resistance. Technically invoked as a sort of Unishment, as their actions were technically treason and thus the appropriate punishment should be far worse, but President Weyland is a Reasonable Authority Figure who fully understands and supports their reasons for doing it.

    Commander Commandy

Commander Amanda Commandy

    Storm

Private Duane "Storm" Darby

  • The Ditz: Very much the stupidest of the Troopers.

    Scout

Private Carson "Scout"

    Snaux

Lieutenant Snaux

  • Embarrassing Nickname: The only one of the rank-and-file Troopers to be regularly known by his actual name rather than his callsign, which is Snowflake.
  • Rank Up: Is made the unit's Lieutenant sometime between the uprising on Coruscant and the deployment to Devlin, as reward for saving President Weyland's life.

    Rouge

Corporal Candice "Rouge" Grey

  • Bodyguarding a Badass: As a member of the Presidential Guard, she's the bodyguard for both President Palpatine and later his Starscream Darth Creepius, both of whom are highly capable Sith Lords in their own right.
    • This ends up subverted during Creepius's term, as he really doesn't need her to defend him so she ends up bodyguarding Minister Weyland instead.
  • Eye Scream: Lost an eye trying to defend President Palpatine from Darth Creepius. She's understandably not a fan of the fact that she then has to bodyguard now-President Creepius.
  • Inappropriately Close Comrades: She and Commander Commandy are the only canon couple who break the real-life military rule that officers shouldn't fraternize with enlisted troops. Commander Commandy is, of course, a Commander, while Rouge is a mere Corporal.
  • Praetorian Guard: Starts her career as a member of the Presidential Guard, right up until she joins La Résistance.

    Ace

Technical Sergeant Valerie "Ace" Tyler

  • Ace Pilot: It's right there in her callsign.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: To Skip, although they really do love each other.
  • Badass in Distress: Is kidnapped by human trafficker Corman Voor before the events of "Fulcrum", so her brother Skip, Robin, Johnny, Colleen MacMillan, and Jeff the Ninja do a Leverage-style heist to rescue her.

    Vert
  • Sour Supporter: He didn't want to join La Résistance in the first place, but when he confronted Commander Commandy about it they got ambushed by Darth Cantankerous and he was assumed guilty by association.

    Hotshot

Colonel William "Hotshot" Baker

  • Colonel Badass: We never get to see him in an actual fight, but his reputation precedes him.
  • Time Police: Ends up recruited into an organization patrolling the timeline led by Isabelle Reines, the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Belinda Reines.
