There are many upsides to Child Soldiers. note

Deep in the forests of eastern Hyrule rested a kingdom unlike any other. Under the guidance and lordship of the Great Deku Tree, the childlike Kokiri arrested control of the woodland realm and established a land of peace and isolation. The Great Deku Tree's utopia would not last however, and as wars ravaged the surface of Hyrule time and time again, such conflict would bring the Kokiri into the field of battle.

    General
  • Age Lift: They all look about five years older than in Ocarina of Time, putting them at around 15 years old in looks. This was partially done to make them a more formiddable force, but also due to the author's dislike of child characters.
  • Badass Adorable: You wouldn't think this much of children.
  • Cast of Snowflakes: The Kokiri make heavy use of 0AD's modular model feature, meaning every Kokiri will have some variation of hair, face, kidney/utility belt, boots, tunic or shirt.
  • Child Soldiers: Subverted with the Kokiri; they look like children, but they're actually as old as, if not older than, most adults of other species.
  • Decomposite Character: In The Wind Waker, it's heavily implied that the Koroks were the descendants of Kokiri transformed into plant-like beings. In Hyrule Conquest, Koroks and Kokiri coexist, though a similar link is likely.
  • Fairy Companion: Surprisingly not inherent, but instead researched. Unlocked automatically if Saria is chosen as a Hero.
  • Hidden Elf Village: Their groves.
  • Hobbits: They are essentially Hylians who had their growth hormones messed up and look like a weird mix between child and adult.
  • In Harmony with Nature: The Kokiri live in tune with their environment, rarely disrupting the ecosystem.
  • Metamorphosis: Kokiri turning into Koroks.
  • Musical Theme Naming: Mido, Domiso, Fado-La and Fado-Ti. Saria's name is also derived from 'aria'.
  • Nature Spirit: Deku Trees are the ancient, reclusive lords of the Kokiri Forest.
  • Older Than They Look: Many Kokiri are actually more than a century old, despite their biological age of around 15.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: Largely based on more traditional conceptions of 'Fairy-folk' rather than winged fairies. Averted with their actual Fairies.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Many of them have lived more than 100 years but look like children.
  • The Ageless: Kokiri don't age and always stay in the form of a child until transforming into a Korok.
  • Two Girls to a Team: The Kokiri only have two girls as heroes: Fado-la and Saria.
  • Unusual Ears: The Kokiri are notable for their disproportionately huge ears.
  • Was Once a Man: The original Kokiri were children of Hylian bandits that the Deku Tree spared from the massacres, and transformed into immortal plant-like people.

    Fighting Yard Units

Minutemen, Slingshotter, Log Ram, Grove Watcher, Bouldershot.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fightingyard_units.png
Clockwise from top right: Slingshotter, Grove Watcher, Bouldershot, Log Ram, Minutemen
  • Anti-Structure: The Log Ram and Bouldershot are intended for destroying enemy bases.
  • Battering Ram: The Log Ram is just a literal log carried around by two Kokiri. How they manage to carry it around at such speed is a mystery.
  • Brats with Slingshots: The Slingshotters are equipped with the Fairy Slingshots from Ocarina of Time. The Bouldershot also counts, as it's essentially a giant Fairy Slingshot on wheels.
  • Cannon Fodder: The Minutemen are a cheap, numerous unit available right from the start, so you'll mostly be sending them to deal with Wildlife lairs or to clog up enemy chokepoints.
  • Improvised Weapon: The Minutemen use knives, swords and pitchforks, but also things like pots and pans.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: The Grove Watcher carries around the Deku Shield, making him one of the better-armored Kokiri units.

    Forest Seclude Units

Hunting Fox, Buck Rider, Doe Trotter, Wolfos.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/forestseclude_units.png
Clockwise from top right: Buck Rider, Wolfos, Doe Trotter, Hunting Fox
Note: For the Stag Chariot, see its section in Mido's entry below.

  • Adaptational Intelligence: There's no indication the Wolfos are anything but mindless animals in Ocarina of Time, but the Kokiri in Hyrule Conquest can reason with them and form uneasy pacts.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: The Hunting Fox has a green patch on its back, making it more stealthy.
  • Anti-Cavalry: The Doe Trotters carry spears, making them anti-cavalry cavalry.
  • Beast of Battle: All four of these units are domesticated or somewhat tamed animals.
  • Canon Foreigner: The foxes and deer don't quite match any specific species seen in The Legend of Zelda series, but they're not that far off from the realm of possibility, as we've seen both of those animals since at least Breath of the Wild.
  • Crown of Horns: The riders on the bucks and does wear antler helmets.
  • Horse of a Different Color: The Buck Rider and Doe Trotter, naturally.
  • Our Werewolves Are Different: The Wolfos are strange, giant wolf monsters with a slightly hunched, humanoid figure, but are apparently just a species of sentient wolves.
  • Sigil Spam: Somehow, the buck's antlers grow into the shape of the Kokiri emerald.
  • The Marvelous Deer: And marvelous they are indeed.

    Korok Colony Units

Korok Explorer, Korok Leafer, Korok Walker, Korok Mantlet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/korokcolony_units.png
Clockwise from top right: Korok Leafer, Korok Mantlet, Korok Walker, Korok Explorer
Note: For the Deku Sprout, see its section in Makar's entry below.

  • Anti-Cavalry: The Korok Walker's main role is as a semi-durable anti-cavalry unit, since the role of Cannon Fodder is already filled by Minutemen.
  • Decomposite Character: As stated before, they coexist with the Kokiri rather than being their descendants. However, it's likely they still descend from the Kokiri in some way.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: The Korok Mantlet is a special kind of shield carried around by spear-throwers, which protects them from most lighter projectiles such as cheap arrows.
  • Plant Person: They're semi-humanoid tree things that grow leaf-like masks on their faces.

    Forest Shrine Units

Emerald Archer, Enchantress, Kokiri Chief

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/forestshrine_units.png
Clockwise from top right: Enchantress, Kokiri Chief, Emerald Archer
Note: For the Fiddler, see its section in Fado-ti's entry below. For the Deku Tree, see its section in Saria's entry.

  • Crown of Horns: A big, antler-adorned helmet is worn by the Kokiri Chief.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Bar the Deku Tree and Fiddler, Forest Shrine units tend to be a little more fancily dressed than the average Kokiri.
  • Mythology Gag: The Enchantress's two Fairies and their ability to reflect projectiles are a reference to Skull Kid in Majora's Mask.
  • She Is the King: The Kokiri Chief is exclusively female, which would mean her proper name should be Chieftess.
  • Status Buff: Being a command unit, the Kokiri Chief improves performance of units nearby.

Kokiri Heroes

    Know-It-All Brothers

Know-It-All Brothers (Domiso, X, X)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/knowitall.jpg
There's no getting around it, they literally look like potheads.
A trio of identical brothers famous for their savvy minds.

    Fado-La

Fado-La

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fadola.jpg
A certified denizen of la-la-land.
Mido's confidant. Notable for her skill with a slingshot.

    Fado-Ti

Fado-Ti

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fadoti.jpg
The other Fado.
A Kokiri fiddler who can command unknown powers with his music.

Unique Unit: Fiddler

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fiddler.png
Fado-ti's unique unit available if he is chosen as a Hero.
Sonata of the Butterflies, please.
  • Music for Courage: Presumably what they provide for the other soldiers, unless they really are magical like Fado.
  • Non-Action Guy: Well, they're fiddlers. They have no means to attack, and will find themselves quickly slain if they're targetted.
  • Status Buff: They give stat bonuses to units in radius.

Makar and the Deku Tree Sprout

Makar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/makar_6.jpg
Don't let that face fool you, he sucks at poker.
A Korok from the far east Forest Haven.

Unique Unit: Deku Sprout

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dekusprout.png
That's a lot of tree people. (What do you mean? There's only two of them!)
Makar's unique unit available if he is chosen as a Hero.

    Mido

Mido, Kokiri Chieftain

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mido.jpg
Surprisingly not a villain this time.
De-facto leader of the Kokiri who always strives for respect from his father and peers.
  • Adaptational Heroism: After nearly two decades of Adaptational Villainy in UndyingNephalim's works, he's back to being a heroic and helpful character.
  • Expy: Looks even more like Peter Pan than Link does.
  • Horse of a Different Color: Rides a deer into battle.
  • Musical Theme Naming: His name is formed from solfège syllables.
  • Replacement Artifact: Replaced Gulley in patch 0.13, inheriting his abilities and role as a deer rider.
  • The Ageless: Potentially hundreds of years old.
  • The Bully: Bullies the other Kokiri around a lot.
  • Truer to the Text: The previous two incarnations of Mido were distant from the original in both original and character, with the notable change being that they both grew up. In Hyrule Conquest, Mido is more or less as he was in Ocarina of Time.

Unique Unit: Stag Chariot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stagchariot.png
The winner of Hyrule's chariot race by process of being the only one there.
Mido's unique unit available if he is chosen as a Hero.

    Saria

Saria, Sage of Forests

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saria.jpg
Author favoritism? Maybe. She is pretty well-written, though.
Kasuto's blessed daughter and a Forest Sage.

Unique Unit: Deku Tree

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dekutree.png
Saria's unique unit available if she is chosen as a Hero.
  • Anti-Structure: The Deku Trees are an example of a melee siege unit whose purpose is to tear down enemy bases.
  • The Trees Have Faces: Not as detailed as the Great Deku Tree, but nonetheless present, with giant noses and beady eyes clearly visible.
  • Tree Cover: The Deku Trees house Kokiri slingshots in the foliage.
  • War Elephants: As if the ability to tear down building with their roots wasn't enough, each Deku Tree has a handful of Slingshotters to pelt nearby units with extra damage. Just being in range of them is dangerous.
  • When Trees Attack: Needless to say, it doesn't end well for the enemy. The Deku Trees are easily the largest and most powerful unit the Kokiri have at their disposal.

    Kasuto

Kasuto, the Great Deku Tree

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kasuto.png
The Deku Tree needs to do some trimming.
The immortal Deku Tree father of the Kokiri.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Kasuto's name has been lost to time, he is usually called the Great Deku Tree.
  • Gentle Giant: Kasuto is a giant, peaceful tree who preserves nature in the Kokiri Forest.
  • Large and in Charge: He's big even by Deku Tree standard and is huge compared to his midget children.
  • My Beloved Smother: Gender-inverted. Kasuto is an overprotective father who screws up his children by never teaching them how to be true adults.
  • Mythology Gag: Kasuto was one of the towns in The Adventure of Link. Specifically, one of the two not named after Sages, and the only one named after a character we don't know.
  • Named by the Adaptation: In the original game he is simply called the Great Deku Tree.
  • Plant Hair: He has a full beard made of branches and leaves.
  • Plant Person: He's a Deku Tree that can move around, speak, and kill people.
  • Time Abyss: Kasuto's age is never exactly specified, but it is known that he is very ancient.
  • Weird Beard: His beard is made of roots, him being a tree and all.
  • When Trees Attack: An immensely powerful being both physically and spiritually, few things short of a massive barrage of fire can stop him should he uproot to fight.
  • Wise Tree: This tree is one of the wisest beings in Hyrule.
