    Count George de Gourmant

Count George de Gourmant (ジョルジュ・ド・グールモン伯爵 )

Voiced by: Shūichi Ikeda (Japanese), Régis Reuilhac (French), Guilano Bonetta/Gianfranco Gamba/Lorenzo Scattorin (Italian), Muhammad Helmy (Arabic)

A French nobleman who co-operates financially with the Nazis. He has a fixation on Jeudi and wishes to make her his wife, repeatedly ordering his men to capture her no matter what.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/count_4.png
Count Georges de Gourmant
  • All Love Is Unrequited: When he was young he had eyes for Hélène, and now that he's older he has eyes for Jeudi. Both already love other men.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He is a wealthy, influential aristocrat who abuses his authority to deem Jeudi a criminal for refusing to be with him, and is also a Nazi Nobleman.
  • Arranged Marriage: In his youth, he was engaged to Hélène Dunant. While it was arranged by her father, he genuinely loved her, but she didn't feel the same way and became a Runaway Bride. Count Georges eventually married another woman, who he proceeded to maltreat for the entirety of their marriage.
  • The Beautiful Elite: Count Gormant and his fellow French elites are very well-dressed and manicured.
  • Cold Ham:
(after finding out that Leonhardt actually didn't die) "I was right about forgetting to have your funeral."
  • Domestic Abuse: He isn't physically abusive to Françoise, but is an emotionally abusive bully, culminating in her eventually shooting him. She later regrets it, and shoots herself.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • In the first Italian dub, his name was changed to Conte Di Gaulmont.
    • In the second Italian dub, his name was changed to Conte Tavernier.
    • In the Arabic dub, his name was changed to Shaker.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: The crux of his relationship with Françoise. She knows he's a horrible, toxic, manpulative predatory bastard but has loved him since they were children and never stopped loving him even when he had eyes for other women, and dies by her own hand after he re-affirms his love for her.
  • The Gunslinger: He owns a golden pistol that he even tries to assassinate General Guisan with when Jean-Jacques turns on him.
  • Hate Sink: He's cruel to children and animals alike, sponsors Nazi organizations all over Switzerland and Austria, tries to assassinate General Guisan to push Switzerland into joining the war and a pedophile.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: When he has Jeudi, he has her tied as he crows his love for her. Jeudi refuses to accept his feelings, and an angered Georges orders her to be locked up as punishment.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: His name could be spelled as Germont or Garmont, but is explicitly spelled as Gourmant on the "Wanted!" Poster for Jeudi and Lundi.
  • Les Collaborateurs: While France as a whole opposed Germany during World War II, Count Gourmant is amongst it's sub-set of Nazi collaborators, and is aiming to pull Switzerland into the war.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has long, straight hair that volominously covers his back and has a thin, elegant face with striking eyes.
  • Love at First Punch: Jeudi calls the Count out for trying to shoot her pet bird Printemps and beating up Lundi. He notices how brave and pretty she is and takes her to his castle.
  • Love Father, Love Son: Count Georges de Gourmant was once engaged to a woman named Hélène Dunant, but she never loved him and ran away from her home to be with her true love. Years later, the Count encounters Jeudi and falls for her. Now, take a gander as to why she has green eyes and blonde hair just like Hélène...
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: Françoise believes that the Count's attraction to Jeudi stems from the fact that she constantly defies him and is stubborn until the very end against his advances. The Count himself also sees Jeudi's refusal as a challenge, and believes he can actually make her love him if he tries hard enough.
  • Loving a Shadow: His first and eternal love was a girl named Hélène. He chases Jeudi around because she's identical to her (and is her child but he doesn't know it), so she reminds him of the woman he loved but couldn't have.
  • Karma Houdini: In the Grand Finale, he tries to assassinate Guisan after his goons fail to do so. Jeudi, Leon, Lundi, Robert and Heinrich band together and warn Guisan just in time, and he leaves through a plane. When Count Georges sees his plane in the sky and realizes he's too late, he declares This Cannot Be! and falls to his knees. He then corners Jeudi and says that he has nothing to lose now, except for her, and aims his gun at her, looking like he's going to shoot her. He then smirks and puts his gun back in his coat, walking away from her. What happened to him next is never known.
  • Kick the Dog: The Count wanted to shoot Jeudi's pet bird Printemps down, and beats up Lundi when he interfers.
    • Also trying to force Leonhardt (a supporter of La Résistance) to perform for the Nazis, under death threats.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He routinely sets up schemes to lure Jeudi out and turns her friends against her, and desires to make his wife through fear and intimidation, or showering her with gifts.
  • Pædo Hunt: He is an adult man who lusts over Jeudi, who is 13 years oldnote . This is scarily something common against Real Life Nazis - they believed that it was the duty of young women to have many children in spite of their ages.
  • Made of Iron: At one point he's left immobile and trapped in a burning building full of falling debris, and survives.
  • Nazi Nobleman: He's a wealthy elite that financially supports the Nazis. Had he survived to the end of the war, he would have likely been executed at the Nuremberg trials.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He wears a dark blue suit, has neat, long hair and wears a lot of fancy clothing.
  • Smug Snake: He is absolutly confident Jeudi will fall for him, not learning his lesson from pursuing her mother who also rejected him.
  • Stalker with a Crush: He wants to have Jeudi because she looks a lot like a woman he loved in the past. Said woman was her mother.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He has silvery blonde hair that's close to being white, and is a Nazi on top of lusting for a child like Jeudi.
  • Villainous Crush: He has an unreciprocated attraction to little Jeudi.

Countess Françoise de Gourmont
  • Driven to Suicide: George and Françoise are traped in a burning building, and George can't move. He tells her to save herself, but she says she is happy with him, and recalls how selfish he was in their childhood. She is happy that he affirmed he loved her, saying now her life is complete. • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She wears a lot of purple clothing, primarily her gown and dress. Her hair also happens to be purple.

  • Love Martyr: And very, very painfully aware of it.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: Her purple hair is tied neatly into a bun.
  • Proper Lady: As expected of a woman of her status, she is polite and refined, keeping a still face in regards to her husband's violent behaviour.

Renaud Dubois
  • The Dragon: To Gourmant, as he hunts down Jeudi per his command.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He seems to genuinely care for the Count, and when he insists on capturing Jeudi, Renaud begs him to reconsider his love for her since she's affiliated with La Résistance. In return, the Count scoffs and reprimands Renaud for interfering in his personal life. As the Count move son, Renaud has an expression of sadness that his master is walking headfirst into danger.
  • Evil Old Folks: He is old and grey haired, and is a Nazi loyal to Count Gourmant.
  • The Gunslinger: His main weapon in combat is a gun, and he's rather trigger-happy. Even the Count as to tell him to knock it off at one point.
  • High-Class Glass: He owns one of these, to show his age and proximity to the wealthy Count.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the manga, he was killed by Jean-Jacques. In the anime, while he's terrfiied of Jean (and Jean implies he'll shoot him), he ultimately survives.
    Jean-Jacques

Jean-Jacques Courtot/Alfred Strausser

Voiced by: Sho Hayami (Japanese), Maurice Sarfati (French), Unknown (Italian), Ghannam Ghannam (Arabic)

A skilled hitman employed by Count Gourmant. His birthday is August 6, 1921. He is actually Lundi's older brother, Jean-Jacques Courtot.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jean_jacques.png
Jean-Jacques Courtot
  • Abusive Parents: His adoptive mother, Louise, treated him like a surrogate husband and it's implied she sexually abused him, as their relationship was more akin to siblings/lovers rather than mother and son. Louise was also heavily mentally unstable and treated him badly until her eventual suicide.
  • Assassination Attempt: He is ordered to kill Henri Guisan by Count Gourmant, but is thwarted by Lundi before he can.
  • Cain and Abel: He is the Cain to Lundi's Abel. Lundi is a self-sacrificing, kind soul who's willing to die to save Jeudi, while Alfred aids Count Gormont. However, he is disgusted by the Count's villainy and eventually turns to the side of good.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The letters he sent to the Courtots detailing his adoptive mother's abuse. They're dead by the time he sent them, but Lundi uncovers them and finds out that Jean-Jacques is his sibling.
  • Creepy Child: As a side effect of Louise's abuse, he became a socially inept child who was inept at expressing himself.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Jean-Jacques was born in the same hospital as Louise Strasser's child, a stillborn. Unable to cope with the grief of losing a child, she stole Jean-Jacques Courtot and proclaimed he was her son, giving him the name "Alfred", leading the Courtots to believe that the stillborn baby was their child. Louise was heavily mentally ill and abused Jean-Jacques in many different ways (one of which is implied to be sexually). After finding out he was adopted, he sent a letter to the Courtots asking to be rescued, but by then they were already deceased.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father, Theodor, couldn't deal with his wife's cruelty and left to Lyons, France, where he married a second time.
  • The Dreaded: Gourmant's cronies fear him because he's just as creepy and emotionless as an adult as he was when he was a child.
  • Dub Name Change: Jean-Jacques was known as Basil in the Arabic dub.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He almost shoots the Count to death when he reveals his plans of building his ideal nation and asks him to kill General Guisan.
Alfred: The Gourmant I knew has just died to me right now!
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When he attempts to shoot Guisan, Lundi jumps in front of the bullet and takes the hit. Horrified by what he's done, Alfred breaks down and instantly regrets it. When Lundi is in the hospital, he receives a large amount of blood transfusion from Alfred.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: He is horrified by the Count's plans of an "ideal nation", and weeps at Lundi jumping in front of the bullet meant for Henri Guisan. He eventually turns to the side of good, and years later, is still shown to be close to Lundi as he even attended his wedding.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Jean-Jacques is actually Lundi's older brother. He refuses to accept Lundi at first, but Lundi cotninues to chase him and begs for Jean-Jacques to acknowledge him.
  • Red Baron: He is known as the hitman "Tarantula".
  • Would Hit a Girl: He holds a gun to Jeudi's temple while she's held hostage by him.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He's violent to Lundi when he tries to save Jeudi, though he's horrified when he shot him for real.

SS Military Unit

    As a whole
  • Those Wacky Nazis: While the Count is a non-action example (being a financer), the rest of them play it straight, being gun-toting, Germany-praising nationalistic Nazis.
  • Would Hurt a Child: None of them have qualms about shooting or even killing children. Count Gourmant shooting Hans is captured by Lewis on film and publicized.
    Heinrich Graf

Heinrich Graf (ハインリヒ・グラーフ)

  • Green-Eyed Monster: He is jealous that Leon was able to become a skilled pianist and attain large amounts of fame, while he was restrained by his injury.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He fits the Nazi's ideal image of being a tall, "pure", good-looking man, the only difference being his dark hair (whereas Nazis favoured it blonde).
  • The Mole: He doesn't actually support the Nazis and is actually in cahoots with Leon to bring them down, surprising Jeudi. He gives Leon advice on where to find Bormann's papers, and warns him about his temper.
    Schrier

Schrier (シュライヤー)

Voiced by: Fumio Matsuka (Japanese), Jean-Pierre Delage (French), Mario Scarabelli (Italian), Unknown (Arabic)

The head of the Salzburg branch of the Nazi party.
  • Jerkass: Both Schrier and Bormann are belligerent to Leon about playing at the Nazi-sponsored concert and hedge him into doing so.
  • Hidden Depths: He has a deep knowledge of music, and to an extent respects Leon because of how skilled he is.
    Bormann

Bormann (ボルマン)

Voiced by: Shōzō Iizuka (Japanese), Roger Crouzet (French), Mario Scarabelli (Italian), Unknown (Arabic)

The Deputy head of the Salzburg branch of the Nazi party.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/borman.png
Bormann
  • Adaptational Curves: He was plump in the manga and the anime makes him even fatter.
  • Fat Bastard: He's fat, unpleasant and a Nazi. When he's rude to Leon, Jeudi pours tea all over him.
  • Jerkass: He puts down Leon and belittles his musical abilities. He's also a Nazi who looks down on dissenters.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He strikes Jeudi after she spills tea on him, and stops Leon from helping her.
    Ludwig

Ludwig (ルドヴィッヒ)

A Nazi who has connections to Louise Strasser.
  • Adapted Out: He didn't appear in the anime.
  • All Men Are Perverts: Ludwig threatened to have Theodor arrested for his anti-Nazi activism, unless Louise regularly had sex with him. A brokenhearted Louise gave in, and later committed suicide.
  • Karma Houdini: Never received any comeuppance for sexually abusing Louise for years.

Dunant Family

    As a whole
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Toyed with. Mrs. Dunant is a sweet person and immediately recognizes Jeudi despite not being able to take her to Hélène, but Mr. Dunant is much harsher due to the massive stress of the Toulonchamps being on his tail and having to face the huge consequences of having separated Hélène and Friederich. They were also indifferent to the Nazis and had no problems with their daughter marrying a Nazi Nobleman.
  • Dub Name Change: In the French dub, they were called the Dunan family.
  • Happily Adopted: Jack adopts Clara and Martha as Jeudi's sisters.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Thanks to Jeudi showing them the true intentions of the Toulonchamps, Jack and Christine change and become better people.
  • Impoverished Patrician: They were very noble and rich, now they're still very noble but they're squeezed and manipulated by Toulonchamp.
  • Nazi Grandpa: Well, Nazi-apologist grandpa....which isn't any better.
    Jack Dunant

Jack Dunant (ジャック・デュナン)

Voiced by: Yuzuru Fujimoto (Japanese), Roger Crouzet (French), Maurizio Scattorin/Riccardo Mantani (Italian), Muhammad Helmy (Arabic)

Hélène's father and the patriarch of the Dunant household. He is a wealthy philanthropist, but not a nice person by nature.
  • Abusive Parents: He wasn't a good dad to Hélène and tried to make her marry Count Georges. She eventually ran away from home, leaving him a broken man.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: He starts out as a cold, aloof man, but warms up to Jeudi (in part due to the resemblance she has to his daughter) and she helps him unravel the wool Tolounchamp has pulled over his eyes.
  • Dub Name Change: He was known as Jacques Dunan in the French dub.
  • Kick the Dog: He accuses Jeudi of being in cahoots with Friederich and starts insulting the dead Brandel's memories. Jeudi's reaction is smacking him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Mr. Dunant suffers one when he finds out that Jeudi almost died and that Hélène has been slowly poisoned. Then he has another (and quite more serious) when Toulonchamp makes clear that the family is totally in his hands.
  • Pet the Dog: Adopts Clara and Martha to make Jeudi happy.
  • We Used to Be Friends: General Guisan and Jeudi's grandfather Jacques were Vitriolic Best Buds as youngsters, always squabbling but always by each other's sides. They grew apart when Guisan helped Hélène run away from her Arranged Marriage, and as a consequence Guisan wasn't able to help the Durants when they fell into Toulonchamp's paws.
    Christine Dunant

Christine Dunant

Voiced by: Matsuko Inaba (Japanese), Renée Régnard (French), Angela Cicorella (Italian), Unknown (Arabic)

Jack's wife and Hélène's mother.
  • Cool Old Lady: Christine often helps out at a local hospital, leading to the patients and staff viewing her as this.

Toulonchamp Family

    As a whole
  • Alliterative Family: All of their names begin with "M".
  • Dub Name Change: They became the Tronchant family in the Italian dub.
  • Gold Digger: They want to drain the Dunants of their wealth and successfully build up their own business empire, on top of the wealth they accumulated from their arms deelings.
  • Lack of Empathy: Their only concerns are themselves and their wealth, as Michel even slaps Hélène for confronting him about pretending Mathilda was her daughter.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Two times over. Michel approached the Dunants with the intention of helping them, but secretly craved their wealth. He had his daughter pretend to be Hélène Brandel's daughter Alicia (who's actually Jeudi), and also secretly fed her poison so she could die quicker and they could access her inheritance, and when Jeudi exposes him for being a fraud, he gives Jack a Sadistic Choice expell and kill Jeudi, or, in his words, "blood will be shed".
  • Missing Mom: Neither Mathilda or Madeleine's mothers are present in the anime.
  • Nazi Grandpa: A variant. Michel has no issue selling arms to them and profiting off the war.
  • Parental Favouritism: Believe it or not, in the manga, it's revealed that Madeleine is Michel's favourite, because she's his oldest child and the daughter of the woman he loved the most.
  • Villainous Lineage: Not only Michel is quite the piece of work, but Mathilda claims they're descendants of Basil Zaharoff, the Turkish-born financier and arm dealer from World War I.
    Michel Toulonchamp

Michel Toulonchamp (ミシェル・トロンシャン )

Voiced by: Masaru Ikeda (Japanese), Marc Lebel (French), Pietro Ubaldi/Natale Ciravolo (Italian), Unknown (Arabic)

An Arms Dealer who approaches Jack after Hélène returns home. The two become fast friends, but Jack is unaware of his true intentions.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rosalpina_33.png
Michel Toulonchamp
  • Arms Dealer: He is an arms dealer who operates in many countries, and has a reputation for his skill in business.
  • Batman Gambit: He uses his youngest daughter Mathilda as Jeudi's Body Double, having her trick Hélène into believing she is the real Alicia (who is actually Jeudi) - which was very easy back then, considering that Hélène's non-existant eyesight doesn't let her see that Mathilda looks nothing like the grown-up Jeudi, who has been missing for a long time so nobody really knows how she would look like. Then, once Mathilda has wormed her place in Hélène's affections, he blackmails the Dunants into doing whatever he asks them too, threatening with taking "Alicia" away from Hélène - which will be fatal for her due to her Break the Cutie past and her very weak heart.
  • Dirty Coward: Once he's found out, he hides his tail between his legs and tries to escape from Jack's wrath.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: Michel is a heavy smoker.
  • Kick the Dog: Not only he refers very nonchalantly to how he finances all kinds of dark deals, but he punches Mr. Dunant when he attempts to confront him. He also assaults Hélène, knowing she's in a fragile state of health due to her illness.
  • Namesto Run Away From Really Fast: He is nicknamed the The "Death Trader" in the merchant world because of his job.
  • Nouveau Riche: Implied. His end goal is becoming wealthy, hence his exploitation of the Dunant family.
  • Sadistic Choice: If the Dunants don't expell and kill Jeudi, "blood will be shed" in his words.
  • Smug Snake: Michel is an overconfident, haughty bastard who's certain he'll.]]
  • Would Hit a Girl: He smacks Hélène, knowing she has a weak heart and is disabled, when she confronts him for lying about her daughter.

    Mathilda Toulonchamp

Mathilda Toulonchamp (マチルダ・トロンシャン)

Voiced by: Saeko Shimazu (Japanese), Magali Barney (French), Emanuela Pacotto/Patrizia Salmoiraghi (Italian), Unknown (Arabic)

Michel's daughter, his accomplice in crime, and the fake Alicia Brandel.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rosalpina_34.png
Mathilda Toulonchamp
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Mathilda falls for Lundi, frequently throws herself at him and wishes for him to leave Jeudi for her, only to be rejected every single time. As a result, she's furious and plants a Forceful Kiss on him anyway.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She deliberately puts a sweet image in front of Hélène, but this is all a facade to make her think she's her loving daughter. In actuality she is poisoning her and the Toulonchamps are planning to take the Dunant's wealth.
  • Body Double: Because she can imitate Jeudi's voice very well and is about her age, she poses as Alicia Brandel, Hélène's daughter.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: She is a Manipulative Bitch in her own right, and encouraged by Michel to bring down .
  • Evil Redhead: She has ginger hair and is Michel's primary minion in his schemes to usurp the Dunants.
  • High-Heel–Face Turn: Averted. She hates Jeudi but willingly reveals her true nature as well as her heritage to Lundi, saying she's doing so specifically because she has taken a liking to him. Her other reason is that Anna's huge blunder scared the crap out of her. However, this doesn't mean she will leave her father's side...
  • Kick the Dog: When Jeudi confronts her for stealing her identity and pretending to be Hélène's daughter, Mathilda says this.
"You Are Too Late. Because you haven't seen her for so long, you are not her child anymore!"
  • Master Poisoner: While it's almost impossible to have her as a proper poison maker due to her extreme youth, Mathilda is still sly enough to slooooowly administer it to Helene to make her ill. She's also all but stated to have poisoned Jeudi's food, but she didn't get to finish the work.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Mathilda claims to have this to cover up that she isn't the real Alicia, and therefore doesn't know the lyrics to the Alpine Rose song.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: It's implied Mathilda was once a sweet and kind girl before Michel corrupted her into being the person she is today. Even Madeleine thinks that she's under his control and needs to be freed. Once she's away from him, she returns to being the gentle girl she was in her childhood.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: When Printempts attacks her and then Lundi questions her, she throws herself crying in the arms of the very stressed Mr. Durant and briefly turns him against Lundi and Jeudi.

    Madeleine Toulonchamp

Madeleine Toulonchamp (マドゥレーヌ・トロンシャン )

Michel Tronchamp's eldest daughter and Matilda's half-sister. Unlike the rest of her family, she opposes the Nazis and joins La Résistance.
  • Adapted Out: She was cut out in the anime adaptation, likely because her role in the story isn't as big as Michel or Mathilda's.
  • Cain and Abel: Mathilda Toulonchamp is a Manipulative Bitch who seeks to defraud the Dunants and poisons her adoptive mother, but her big sister Madeleine is against the Nazis, disowns her father for being an Arms Dealer, and joins the resistance movement.
  • Happily Married: She eventually marries Robert Lewis, and the two travel the world.
  • Knowledge Broker: She seems to know quite a bit about Lundi's older brother, Jean-Jacques Cortot and drops the information she has to the heroes.
  • Screw This Im Outtahere: She refuses to join her father and sister in manipulating the Dunants, and left them a long time ago.
  • White Sheep: Madeleine is the only one who realizes how screwed up the Toulonchamp family is and opposes Nazism.
