Demon Ministry

    Gary
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gary_and_his_demons.jpg
Voiced by: Mark Little
Our protagonist a 40 year old demon hunter initially itching for retirement.
  • The Alcoholic: Frequently self medicates with liquor, to the point he keeps a flask hidden at work.
  • Ambiguously Bi: There's no question Gary was head over heels in love with Janine and the two had a very healthy sex life, but then there's his brief affair with Mike the tentacle monster which was possibly less about him being a guy and more to do with Gary learning he likes tentacles.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: As big a comical screwup as Gary is most of the time him telekinetically murdering Fleshler while in the throes of Tranquil Fury serves to demonstrate how much scarily awesome potential he has deep down.
  • Birds of a Feather: He and Janine were two outgoing, Adorkable people.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Gary can actually be surprisingly competent when it comes to demon hunting but his self-loathing and laziness often detracts from his skills.
  • Butt-Monkey: Hardly anything ever goes right for him.
  • Cain and Abel: Downplayed, but between the two of them Gary is far more likeable and redeemable as a person than his smugly self satisfied brother Steve.
  • Catchphrase: Gary's is "Sword make me better!"
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Few (if any) would look at this balding, depressed middle aged guy and think he was chosen to defend humanity against nightmarish monsters.
  • Cool Sword: His signature weapon is a sword with a golden handle and a red crystal that summons a suit of armor for him.
  • Cool Uncle: Wants Mikaela to see him as this and gets annoyed whenever he's compared to Steve.
  • Cosmic Plaything: Gary's outlook on his life.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When he's in the groove, Gary's dishing these out to many a hellish monster. Especially when he was younger and in his prime.
  • The Cynic: Years of suffering have made Gary conclude his job is ultimately pointless as demon attacks happen everyday and he can't be everywhere at once, ergo he's "barely making a dent."
  • Deadpan Snarker: Verbal responses concerning those who annoy Gary usually involve a whole lot of biting sarcasm.
  • Driven to Suicide: In the pilot episode no less! Thankfully averted.
  • Fantastic Racism: Refreshingly averted. With every physical and psychological trauma Gary's been put through being connected, one way or another, to demon kind you'd probably expect him to be a staunch bigot, but no. Gary doesn't hate all demons, as his friendly relationships with Bloody Mary and Mike prove, chatting amicably with them at different points. Fleshler though...
  • Fat and Skinny: The Skinny to Hanley's Fat.
  • Feeling Their Age: Had far more honed reflexes back in the day, being able to effortlessly knock the crap outta wave after wave of demonic thugs. Now he's a middle aged man with a pot belly who needs to stop and catch his breath.
  • Freudian Excuse: Janine's death coupled with dropping out of high school and the agonizing, daily traumas his job forces him to endure.
  • Hidden Depths: When Fleshler disingenuously offers Janine's release and their guaranteed protection from other demons if Gary surrenders his sword, symbolically swearing to abandon his duty as The Chosen One, we see Gary thoughtfully stare into his own reflection said sword casts, which gives the impression he'd considered such a course of action many times back then, Janine's safety and their future together weighing heavily on his mind.
    • Fancies rock music and used to attend many outrageous, hardcore concerts.
  • Hunter of Monsters: Gary's job amounts to this, though it can also mean protecting them if the demons are acting as law-abiding citizens.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Minus the balding head, Gary resembles his voice actor/creator Mark Little quite alot.
  • It's All About Me: He selfishly thinks he's the most miserable person in the world, making him entitled to hating everyone and everything else.
  • It's Personal: With Fleshler. To say Gary absolutely hates his guts is an understatement.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: Being the chosen to hunt demons, he had to drop out of high school and be stuck in the job of demon hunting, which he can't even retire because they can't find a replacement for him.
  • Jerkass: Gary is rude to almost everybody he meets.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: With how much has gone wrong in his life, and continues to, there are times where you can't disagree with Gary's self pity fueled rants.
    • Gary's perception of his older brother Steve being a pompous douchebag is all too steeped in truth.
    • Although it goes south in the end, Gary arguing to Leslie that it's unhealthy to keep your more negative feelings bottled up wasn't wrong.
    • When we finally meet Fleshler in flashbacks we see Gary's description of what a monstrous bastard he was isn't an exaggeration in the least. If anything, he proves to be far worse.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being an embittered, prickly crank who verbally snaps at everyone around him Gary is ultimately a decent person at heart and is able to show kindness to others at times.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Had a housecat named Craig he regretfully put down because of hyperthyroidism and befriends a tiger after he saves Gary from a scorpion like demon.
  • Lack of Empathy: While not completely so, Gary typically prioritizes his issues over everyone else's and has trouble seeing things from other people's perspectives in general.
  • The Lost Lenore: Janine was the love of Gary's life. Her death still haunts him to this day.
  • Manchild: Acts like an immature, bratty pissant at times. Unsurprising, given that he dropped out of high school back in the 1990s.
  • Mind over Matter: At his most powerful Gary can telekinetically manipulate people and objects. He's only ever until recently done so once, to brutally massacre Fleshler and his gang right after Janine's death. Come the season 2 finale he does it again to save Flesher Jr from Ryndok.
  • Mister Seahorse: Unwillingly becomes this in season 2 after Fleshler's corpse impregnates him with his spawn, resulting in a short yet painful and freakishly grotesque birthing process.
  • My Greatest Failure: Gary never recovered from Janine's murder, and it's the main contributor for how much of a Jerkass he is now.
  • Not Good with Rejection: Does not take Bloody Mary's brush-off very well.
  • One True Love: As far as Gary's concerned Janine was his soulmate.
  • Only Sane Man: Cynical realist Gary is often more levelheaded than his perkier co-workers.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: A winged demon tauntingly hinting at Flesher's return is enough of a shock to give Gary pause and make him sit quietly while staring at his sword for a few minutes before Hanley asks what's up.
  • Papa Wolf: Ryndok seconds from killing Fleshler Jr is enough to trigger Gary's second telekinetic outburst.
  • Paper Tiger: Doesn't matter if he's a badass, demon hunter with psychic powers. Steve can still give Gary a wedgie. Although, perhaps it's a case of Willfully Weak on Gary's part, since Steve's a normal guy.
  • Pet the Dog: Even though he's a bitter guy who's abrasive to everyone around him and mostly drinks and bemoans his fate, he's able to show that there's still some good left inside of him.
    • While he has a somewhat strained relationship with his parents and older brother, frequently irritated by their behavior, Gary tries his hardest to get along with his niece Mikaela, always warmly greeting her and even gives probably his biggest, most sincere smile when seeing her at the dinner table for a family get together.
    • Is truly touched when his parents reveal they've kept his various demon hunting mementos and converted their garage into a display wing for them.
    • Befriends a zoo's tiger in one episode he names Mr. Stripes and is devastated to learn said big cat is slowly mutating into a hell beast.
    • Helps Leslie learn to express her bottled up anger and misery after worryingly observing her passive aggressively breakdown. Ultimately it backfires, nearly getting them both killed, but still a welcome show of good intention on his part.
      • Leading off of the above, when Leslie spirals into a complete, unabashed breakdown, threatening to kill herself with demon venom, Gary steps forward to talk her down, confessing that while he finds Leslie annoying at times he also genuinely cares about her and views her as a friend. The two embrace in a warm, tearful hug.
    • Comes to genuinely love Fleshler Jr like the son he never had.
  • Promotion to Parent: While they got off to a rocky start, what with Fleshler Jr being the reincarnation of Gary's hated arch enemy, he ultimately accepts the infant demon as his surrogate son.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Does this when Fleshler kills Janine. It's also the first and only time he tears through demons with his mind.
  • Shapeshifting: Type two. An entire episode focuses on him becoming a teenager and he is temporarily transformed into a rat at the end of it.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Borderline this with Janine.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Gary is mean to everyone he meets. This stems from his sadness as everything he loved in life is gone, and all he has is his job which brings him constant pain.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: Embracing his role as Fleshler Jr's adoptive father leaves Gary feeling happier than he has in years.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Janine's death was the starting point for Gary's downward spiral into misery and self pity.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: His outgoing, enthusiastic younger self is a stark contrast to the lonely, depressed sourpuss he is in the present.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Happens in season 2 as raising Fleshler Jr has an enormously positive effect on Gary and he starts toning down his jerkassery.
  • Tracking Chip: "Home For Flesher" reveals that Marito put one of these Gary after the latter went missing for a week with forest sprites in "Forest of Despair".
  • Transformation Sequence: His sword and armor pop out of nowhere when he says this phrase:
"To the distant light I become myself
But a better version of myself
    I'm the best!"
  • Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist: Gary is a perpetually angry and bitter jerk who constantly causes the bad things that happen to him.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Janine brought out the best in Gary. Flashbacks to their relationship in the late '90s shows that Gary was a much happier, more upbeat person then and genuinely enjoyed his demon hunting job, having the woman he loved there to cheer him on.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: An interesting example with Hanley and Leslie, since Gary's the one doing (almost) all the insulting.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Resents how much fawning his older brother Steve receives from their parents, hungry for their approval of him and his accomplishments as a demon hunter.
  • With Friends Like These...: Isn't exactly the greatest friend material, at one point even dumping a wounded, trembling Hanley in their hotel room just so he could enjoy a little vacation time and easily pushes aside his rising conscience when the nearby bar advertises "free drinks all night."

    Hanley
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hanley_4.jpg
Voiced by: Kyle Dooley
An employee in the Demon Ministry that was made Gary's partner.
  • Fat and Skinny: The Fat to Gary's Skinny.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Downplayed example with Gary. Hanley recognizes his partner's faults yet always tries to encourage his better side and is practically squeeing the first time he watches Gary's Transformation Sequence.
  • Nice Guy: Hanley is kind and polite to everyone he meets. This is in stark contrast to Gary.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Hanley becomes more abrasive in one episode. It turns out this is because he was infected by a demon and was in the process of turning into one.
  • The Pollyanna: He always seems to look on the bright side.
  • Transformation of the Possessed: Turns into shark demon in one episode.

    Leslie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leslie_9.jpg
Voiced by: Kayla Lorette
The woman in charge of the Demon Ministry.
  • Benevolent Boss: Treats her employees fairly and is usually very patient with Gary's Jerkass behavior, though she'll switch to a sterner tone and put her foot down whenever he goes too far.
  • Casual Kink: She is into hentai/tentacle porn, and is a fan of Mike's work. She tells this to Gary when they're at work, prompting him to be disgusted.
  • Mirror Character: To Gary. They're both, at heart, very miserable people. In "Leslie & Her Demons" we see Gary's coaching practically turn her into a female version of himself.
  • Sad Clown: She always seems chipper but her life is almost as miserable as Gary's, with her husband cheating on her, divorcing her, and taking the kids.
  • Stepford Smiler: Leslie is just as depressed as Gary but is better at hiding her unhappiness.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Temporarily in the episode "Leslie & Her Demons."

    Marito
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_20221116_032036.png
Voiced by: Marito Lopez
The Demon Ministry's science guy.
  • Mad Scientist: Sometimes gives off this vibe due to nonchalantly talking about some of his stranger/more unethical inventions.
  • The Smart Guy: He's their analyst and scientist.

    Gargnel
Voiced by: Kyle Dooley
The Demon Ministry's robotic demon training dummy, adviser, and security guard.
  • Do-Anything Robot: He has been used for a variety of things in the ministry, such as serving tea.
  • Nice Guy: Programmed to be a very cordial, friendly sort to those he interacts with whenever training isn't required.
  • Robot Buddy: At his lowest difficulty rating.

    Mudge
A demon sorcerer that the Demon Ministry hires to help with medical issues.
  • Epic Fail: Mudge is completely inept at magic, as the only thing she can do is summon insects that don't even follow her orders.

    Kavya
A sorceress who's in charge of the ensorcelled door on Gary's back, which is how he gets his sword.
  • Support Party Member: She seems to have no combat capability of her own, but she's the one who makes sure Gary can get his sword whenever he needs it, and later uses her knowledge of magic to seal the portal Ryndok opened using Gary's ensorcelled door.

Civilians

    Steve
Voiced by: David Berni
Gary's older brother, who has a much better life than Gary.

    Mikaela
Voiced by: Sara Garcia
Steve's teenaged daughter and Gary's niece.

    Tucker
Voiced by: Tim Gilbert
A young man Gary believes to be the next chosen one.

    Larry
A human who joins a cult that worships a demon prophesized to restart the war between humanity and demons.
  • Affably Evil: The fact that he's a member of an evil cult is the only thing that makes him evil. Otherwise, he's a very nice guy that's easy to like.
  • Covert Pervert: The first time we see him in bed with Vale, it's revealed that he has a mirror above his bed, much to Vale's disgust.

Demons

    Bloody Mary
Voiced by: Emma Hunter
The defining example of a mirror monster.
  • Affably Evil: Still enjoys the occasional slaughter. Alot. Otherwise a very friendly person.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: To Grundleman.
  • Birds of a Feather: Like Gary she too suffers from depression, chatting about it with him after they bump into each other at the supermarket.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: She's apparently able to lay eggs, despite looking like an average woman.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She used to be a killer monster, who has, in fact, killed a few of Hanley's friends in his childhood. Nowadays, she's your average suburban housewife and even helps Gary as an informant.
  • Interspecies Romance: Is married to a normal, middle aged man.
    • Mary briefly cheats on him with Gary. Doesn't end well...

    Grundleman
Voiced by: Tim Gilbert
A recent mirror monster.
  • Hook Hand: Both of his hands. Even his feet are hooks.
  • Oh, Crap!: His reaction when Bloody Mary is summoned to kill him.
  • Smug Snake: He bragged that Bloody Mary was old news when being interviewed, but was helpless when Bloody Mary decided to express her displeasure.

    Golade
A demon on parole who works as an informant for the Demon Ministry.

    Fleshler
Voiced by: Chris Wilson
A demon crime boss who killed Gary's girlfriend.
  • Arch-Enemy: Fleshler is this for Gary, having been responsible for his girlfriend's death and awakening his higher powers.
  • Asshole Victim: More than deserved having his head torn apart and body exploded by Gary.
  • Back from the Dead: Seems to have returned, although Gary doesn't know this at first.
  • Bait the Dog: Pulls a very cruel form of this on Gary and Janine.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Sports an especially creepy one with jagged, yellow teeth.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Maintains a friendly, chatty disposition while holding Janine hostage in his office.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Murdering Janine was the key event that began Gary's transformation into a harsh, miserable asshole on the verge of killing himself in the first episode.
  • Hate Sink: The most irredeemably vile demon seen thus far in the show. And that's saying alot.
  • Jerkass: Every bit the prick Gary's built him up to be and then some.
  • Killed Offscreen: We don't even see his final battle.
  • Laughably Evil: He gets in a few funny lines, such as requesting a diet "flesh juice", before slaughtering Janine in front of Gary and joking about it pushes him into Hate Sink territory.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Murdering the girlfriend of The Chosen One right in front of him. You can count the seconds Fleshler lived afterwards with both hands.
  • The Unfought: Gary doesn't get a chance to finish him off once and for all due to Gary's successor doing it off-screen.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Does this to Gary, pretending to give up Janine after he'd agreed to surrender his sword, making her answer his marriage proposal, acting like he's touched by their exchange before violently skewering Janine.

    Mike
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mv5bogfmnjrizdytodnjyi00zjjmltg0nzetztyzmmizzwm5zgjhxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvyotiwndyznzy_v1_fmjpg_ux1000_2.jpg
Voiced by: Ned Petrie
An octopus monster that works as a famous porn actor for hentai.
  • Closet Key: It's ambiguous whether he made Gary realize he is also attracted to men, but he definitely made him be into tentacles.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Porn actor, in this case, but he turns out to be friendly and likable. Everyone in the movie set and in Gary's office likes him and he's even amiable to the protestors.
  • Nice Guy: He is super likable and very polite. This is probably part of why alot of people find him attractive.
  • Sex God: According to his ex-boyfriend, once you experiment with his tentacles, you can't go back. Even Gary agrees after spending a night with him.
  • Token Heroic Orc: What sets Mike apart from other demons such as Bloody Mary is that he isn't just Affably Evil, but rather an all out Nice Guy with not a single ounce of malignance in him. He's so nice he even wanted to console the man who shot him!
  • White Sheep: To his family, who we see in framed photos are all fearsome looking sea monsters.

    SPOILER CHARACTER

Fleshler Jr

The reincarnation of Fleshler. He's taken in by the Demon Ministry in the hopes of raising him to be good.
  • Enfant Terrible: As a demon baby, he sometimes does some disturbing things, such as mauling anyone who tickles him.
  • Tracking Chip: "Home For Flesher" reveals that the Marito implanted one in Fleshler Jr's arm when he was born.

    Vale
A demon who leads a cult that seeks to restart the Human/Demon war by summoning their lord and master.

    Ryndok
The demon who led the demons forces in the Human/Demon War centuries ago. He has returned to try and wipe out humanity.
  • Bad Boss: Although he seems personable to demons, he doesn't actually care about them personally. He doesn't even bother to remember Vale's name despite the fact that it was her actions that freed him. This costs him in the end, as she betrays him when he nearly kills her human lover.
  • The Social Expert: He knows exactly what to say in order to convince demons to start another war with humanity.
