    Til

Til Arrior

Voiced By: Fumie Mizusawa (JP), Mona Marshall (EN)

Tiz's brother, whom he failed to save when the Great Chasm appeared and swallowed Norende.

  • Cut the Safety Rope: Discussed. Tiz manages to hang onto his brother's hand as he dangles over the chasm, but Til insists Tiz let him go before they both fall. Ultimately, another tremor loosens Tiz's grip.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: He dies during the opening, motivating his older brother to close the Great Chasm and protect Agnès. Til also seems to suffer this himself during the second loop when Tiz is the one that died.
  • Survivor Guilt: The version of him in the second loop has this.

    Owen

Captain Owen

Voiced By: Kaito Ishikawa (JP), Keith Silverstein (EN)

Son of the Karl the Innkeep and Captain of the guard in Caldisla. He is mortally wounded by Argent Heinkel while defending the king, and perishes soon after the party finds him.

  • Badass Normal: Not a Job Asterisk user, a Jobmaster, or anything else. He's simply an average human who fought a strong warrior. Taken even further in D's Journal. Alternis, who is spying on the city notes that Owen is the only threat the Sky Knights will have, and while he's confident Heinkel will take him easily, he makes it clear Owen is very powerful.
  • Doomed by Canon: Sadly, Second reveals he is very much dead.
  • Killed Off for Real: Heinkel fatally wounds him and he dies asking Tiz to save the king. In the other loops, however, he survives.
  • Manly Men Can Hunt: One of his favorite hobbies is hunting boar.
  • Self-Made Man: Having been a terribly weak and ill boy, Owen had to work tirelessly to deserve the title of Caldisla's Captain of the guard.
  • Undying Loyalty: Even as he dies, his final thoughts are the king's safety.
  • The Worf Effect: How do you establish the Eternian Knights as a legitimate threat? Kill the captain of Caldisla's guard.

    Karl

Karl the Innkeep

Voiced By: Hideyuki Umezu (JP), Paul St. Peter (EN)

Owner of the Inn in Caldisla. He has a son who serves as the Captain of the guard.

  • Cool Old Guy: Lets you rest up for free.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Crosses this after Owen is killed, and eventually becomes bedridden. Once Egil is brought to Caldisla, he begins to recover.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Possibly to indicate his easy-going demeanor.

    The King

The King of Caldisla

The old king of Caldisla.

  • Adipose Rex: The good variation. Though the king certainly could care to lose a few pounds.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's a very kind ruler. He offers sympathy to Tiz's situation and support to Agnès's plight.
  • Distressed Dude: Gets kidnapped by Heinkel early on.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Is happy to help the vestal, as well as allow Tiz to rebuild his village.

    The Prime Minister

Dominus Harena

The prime minister of Ancheim. Unlike the king, he is kind and a good leader.

  • The Good Chancellor: We don't see much of him, but he is clearly a more reasonable man than King Khamer.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Takes the reigns before steering Ancheim to a democratic future after the king is ousted or killed.

    The Matriarch

The Matriarch

The leader of Florem, and among one of the few who still follows Florem's old ways.

  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She's supposed to be the leader of Florem, but the Bloodrose Legion has slowly pushed her out over the course of several years.

    Olivia

Olivia Oblige

The vestal of water, and a close friend to Agnès, who's described as more talented and confident than her. Having gone into hiding by the time the party arrives in Florem, Agnès enters the Sacred Flower Festival in order to alert Olivia of her presence.

    Fire Vestal

Fire Vestal

The vestal of the Fire Crystal who was killed by Konoe Kikyo, causing the crystal to rage out of control. After her death, she appeared to Egil in his dreams to help the heroes.

    Earth Vestal

Earth Vestal

The vestal of the Earth Crystal and the first vestal to be killed by the Duchy of Eternia. Being long dead before the game's story begins, she appears only in reports by the Duchy.

  • Asshole Victim: From what you learn from the duchy's documents, she was a corrupt piece of trash and deserved what she got from Braev. Even Griede Geneolgia regards her as an "offensive woman".
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: In the duchy's documents, she is described as being dragged before Braev, swearing like a submariner, and getting Ise-no-Kami across the throat for it.
  • Posthumous Character: When the Duchy took over Eternia, she was dragged before Braev, where she proceeded to hurl insults at him until an enraged Kamiizumi struck her down.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She apparently gave a rather long and mean spirited one to Braev for wishing to use the Earth Crystal to research medical treatments during the Great Plague.
  • Sinister Minister: Being the only vestal the Crystal Orthodoxy had easy access to, she was seemingly just as corrupt as they were.

    The Proprietress

The Proprietress

The good-natured proprietress on the Drunken Pig tavern on the Grandship. Even when it looks like the Grandship is finally starting to sink, she stands her ground, and she remains as the proprietress of the Drunken Pig tavern when the party turns the Grandship back into an airship.

  • Cool Old Lady: Her age isn't known, but she's probably quite old. She also refuses to charge the Warriors of Light for their meals.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": She's always referred to as Proprietress.
  • Going Down with the Ship: When the Grandship starts sinking, she's the only one to refuse to evacuate. The ship doesn't sink because the protagonists restart the engine, and in the end it becomes the party's airship.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Despite being a little old lady, everyone lives in fear of her short temper and stubbornness.
  • Refuge in Audacity: In Second, Alternis spends a lot of time at the New Grandship Republic dropping off poor-law handouts. The proprietress takes advantage by having him do pub errands... and offers him "a draught of ale, on the house" when Yew's party visits.
Zatz: A free drink? That man deserves an open tab for life!
  • Supreme Chef: Her bio states she's a great chef, versed in various kind of cuisines.

    Zatz and Datz

Zatz Mightee and Datz Strongberry

Two soldiers of the Shieldbearer faction from Eisenberg. Zatz looks like a mouse, while Datz is a bulky man. Zatz went out at sea to the Grandship in hopes of finding someone who could help the Shieldbearers win the civil war. They are later given orders to help Agnès and her friends in their quest.

  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Datz is huge and burly, and Zatz is small and lanky.
  • The Dividual: They're best friends and always together.
  • Meaningful Name: Datz's surname is "Strongberry", and he certainly looks like he could go toe-to-toe with the bearer of any physical job's asterisk.
  • Punny Name: Zatz's surname is Mightee, and people used to make fun of it. Zatz is actually very proud of his surname.
  • Sidekick: First introduced as mere Mauve Shirts of the Shieldbearer army, they eventually ascend to this for the main party, once the secret of the Grandship is discovered.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: Datz is nearly as out-of-proportion as Barras.

    The Goodmans

Daniel Goodman & Eleanor Goodman

Daniel Voiced By: Steve Staley (EN)

Daniel Goodman is the leader of the Shieldbearers of Eisenberg. He cares greatly for his troops and his wife and is very popular. Eleanor is Goodman's wife, who waits for him patiently in his residence in Hartschild, and who seems just as good-natured as her husband.

  • Aerith and Bob: In a game full of relatively fantasy-sounding names, Daniel Goodman sounds a lot more contemporary.
  • Happily Married: The two are very much in love. Not even Daniel's periods of absence can dampen either's devotion.
  • The Leader: Daniel is the commander of the Shieldbearers.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Rumors apparently abound that Daniel is engaged in an affair with Officer Neuer, which the latter has not explicitly denied. It's obviously not true since the Goodmans are very much Happily Married, and Eleanor herself doesn't seem to buy into the idea, but Steiner suggests it as a possible murder motive for Neuer.
  • Names to Trust Immediately: With a name like Goodman, there's no way he'd be one of the bad guys.
  • Nice Guy: True to their name, they are very kind people, and Daniel is noted to be a popular leader because of it.
  • Spock Speak: Daniel has a peculiar way of speaking. It's formal, but also robotic in a way, with limited contractions.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: To Eleanor's dejection, Daniel rarely has time to come home and see her.

    Suleiman

Suleiman

Once a man who courted Mephilia, as well as the Captain of SS Funky Francisca. He sought out to find Susano-o for Mephilia after she had obtained the summoner's asterisk. He is now a ghost who lingers on his ship; Captain Barbarossa, a friend of his, continues the quest to honor his last wish.

  • Last Request: His last wish was to find the Susano-o for Mephilia. Barbarossa continues the search until the third loop, where he finally finds it.
  • The Lost Lenore: The disappearance of the Funky Fransisca only aggravated Mephilia's already-deteriorating mental state. By Second she's recovered her sanity, but still mourns him deeply.
  • Posthumous Character: He's already dead by the events of the story and is only mentioned by those that knew him.

    Egil

Egil

Voiced By: Fumie Mizusawa (JP), Mona Marshall (EN)

A canary boy working in the Mythril Mines. The party frees him, and he helps them out with getting into the Fire Temple.

  • Bratty Half-Pint: What Airy thinks of him for using small technicalities in his favor.
  • Cheerful Child: Egil is just full of optimism and childish innocence. He even has a positive view of being forced to work in a mine.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: His entire family is dead, leaving young Egil all alone in the world. Even so, he's still got spirit to spare.
  • Identical Stranger: To Til.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Egil makes it very clear that he wants to follow in his parents' footsteps and become a soldier who can protect everyone.
    • In Bravely Second, he's the Junior Captain of the Youth Brigade in Caldisla.
  • Punny Name: Egil's favorite food is fried eggs.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Invoked by Tiz. Egil is brought back to Caldisla to live with Innkeeper, Karl, who is having difficulty coping with the loss of his son, Owen. It works because Egil reminds Karl of Owen when he was younger, and Karl reminds Egil of his late grandfather.
  • Tag Along Kid: For the later half of Chapter 3, Egil follows Tiz's gang around and aids them on their journey to the Fire Temple.
  • Truth in Television: Anyone who has ever done babysitting for anyone in Egil's age range will loathe this kid immediately.
  • You Never Asked: He leaves out an important detail about getting to the Fire Temple when questioned by Airy, on the grounds that she never asked him about any lever. Airy is not amused.

    Steiner and Neuer

Saranish Steiner & Savish Neuer

Two officers under Goodman's command. Steiner appears to be obsessed with climbing up the social ladder, while there's rumors around Neuer that she's dating Goodman (which she hasn't refuted).

  • Killed Off for Real: Though, with the knowledge of how the assassination plot goes, the party manages to save both of them and foil the assassination plot on Goodman when they go back around thereafter. You can actually subvert this trope altogether on the first go, but you're left to figure out how on your own.
  • Red Herring: Once everyone realises they have an assassin in their midst, both of them make their suspicions about eachother known to the party, and both seem to have plausible motives. And since, for the player, it's obvious no-one in the party could have done it and the only other suspects are Commander Goodman and his wife, both of whom are incredibly sympathetic, it seems obvious that one of them is the killer. Until both drop dead a few moments later.

    Mahzer Lee

Mahzer Lee/Okae Lee

Edea's ill mother. She is cared for at Eternia's White Magic hospital.

  • Happily Married: To Braev.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Rather than be upset with Edea for betraying the Duchy, she is just happy that Edea is following her heart.
  • Punny Name: Like her husband and daughter: "Mother" and "motherly" can be made out of her localized name. Her Japanese name forms "okaeri", which means "welcome home".
  • Turn the Other Cheek: After Edea's battle with Braev, Mahzer rushes to her husband's side, but immediately forgives Edea, even though her daughter has crippled her father and the Eternian conquest. Mahzer sees this in a positive light, saying that her war-weary husband may finally rest now.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Mahzer is terminally ill and lives most of her days at Eternia's White Magic hospital. Subverted later on when it is revealed that Braev's medical exploits have made great strides, ensuring that Mahzer's treatments will successfully keep her alive.

    Doctor Vincent

Vincent S. Court

Victor's father, also deceased. Together with his son, he studied the Earth Crystal, and its power.

  • Posthumous Character: He's been dead for a while by the time the game starts, but he had an important impact on Eternia and Victoria.
  • Unwanted Assistance: He attempted to use alchemical genesis, a practice that has been forbidden since before the Crystal Orthodoxy, to heal Victoria. Victor and Braev both told him to get stuffed, but he went ahead with the procedure anyways. The end result: Not Allowed to Grow Up, Sanity Slippage, Ax-Crazy.

    The Crystal Orthodoxy

The Crystal Orthodoxy

Luxendarc's former dominant religion and ruling power.

  • Broken Pedestal: Agnès doesn't take the revelations about the Orthodoxy's dark side well. Neither does Edea, who saw them as a victims of the Duchy.
  • Corrupt Church: As you play further in the game, you start learn that the Orthodoxy wasn't as righteous as originally presented.
    • We've seen how corrupted they are by Bravely Second in comparison to what players heard and found by Bravely Default where many of the members of the new villain group are mostly victims of their corrupted doings.
  • Corrupt Politician: After DeRosso refused to take a bribe in the election of the Orthodoxy's Grand Patriarch, the cardinal who made the offer not only had him dismissed from the Orthodoxy, but during the takeover of Eternia he led the siege of DeRosso's kingdom.
  • Leave No Survivors: When the Orthodoxy invaded Lord DeRosso's kingdom, they poisoned the water supply and their siege force left no hope for escape. After DeRosso's mother was sent to the Orthodoxy as demand, DeRosso received word that not only was his mother killed but no surrender would be accepted and his castle, full of refugees, was set ablaze.
  • Malicious Slander: The Orthodoxy did this to its opposition.
    • They also planted rumors that their allies, the Kingdom of Eternia, was planning to force a return to the Old Faith in order to justify a violent takeover of the country.
  • The Plague: About two decades before the the game began, a great plague struck Eternia. A young Braev requested that they use the Earth Crystal for medical research, the Orthodoxy ignored him and set up a blockade that locked out any refugees seeking help. As the plague subsided, the people who advocated the blockade were praise while Braev either was excommunicated or left the country in disgust, always maintaining that they could have ended the plague sooner and saved countless lives by following his plan.
  • Wall Around the World: One of the omens warned by the angel met by DeRosso and Yulyana was that the lands around Eternia would up heave into huge mountains, cutting the Orthodoxy off from the rest of the world and the crystals. Yulyana used this to his advantage, as before leaving he set up the asterisk job system that only he could maintain and proceeded steal and hide away the Orthodoxy's most powerful weapons.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Some of them had this going for them. Like Foundar Geneolgia, a man whose founding of the Geneolgia family and schemes to preserve it's power in the Orthodoxy was as motivated by compassion and empathy for another person's plight as it was his own ambition. Three of the men mentioned concerning the girl who had the plague are also spoke of benevolently as merciful, kind, and compassionate.
  • Written by the Winners: They rewrote history to make them seem like just and peaceful reformists, while they slandered their enemies as heretics and accused Lord DeRosso of being an evil vampire.

    Danzaburo

Danzaburo

Yoko's proclaimed brother and swordsman of Yunohana.

  • An Arm and a Leg: When Yoko retrieves the Sword of the Brave, the blade cuts off his sword arm, just like what happened to Yew's brother. Not that it matters all too much to him, as he never existed in the first place.
  • Force and Finesse: Extols the virtues of the trope to Yew and Tiz at the Yunohana hot spring. Yew admires his muscular form and expresses his desire to reach that point; Danzaburo advises him that they prioritizing skill would serve them much better than trying to build strength.
Danzaburo: For a swordsman, it is not about the quantity of muscle, but the quality. You both have a litheness which should serve you well with a blade.
  • Iaijutsu Practitioner: He doesn't draw his swords until he needs to swing them.
  • Master Swordsman: Was Walking the Earth in the hopes of reaching this point. Given what he does to Aimee's shots, it's safe to say he succeeded.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: When Yew prepares to peek at Edea, Magnolia, and Yoko, he starts exuding a battle aura. He may be a non-existent phantasm created by a creepy kitsune trying to guilt-trip Yew, but that doesn't mean you can play pervert on his sister.
  • Parrying Bullets: He manages to cut down Aimee's bullets, which hit every mark before she met him.
  • Theme Naming: The name "Danzaburo" is the name of a Tanuki yokai in Japanese folklore, which forms a theme with his sister's name, which is a term used for a fox yokai. Both of which foreshadow Yoko's true identity.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: He is not actually a human at all, and is actually an illusion created by Yoko for the purpose of testing Yew's character.
  • Walking the Earth: Did this to hone his swordsmanship.

    Sakura

Sakura

The good-natured owner and sole employee of the bathhouse that turns into your boat, she later serves as the a similar role to The Proprietress in Default.

  • Nice Girl: She's very sweet.
  • Supreme Chef: Her cooking is great enough that Edea was the most excited about it when she decided to stay on the ship.

Walking Spoiler characters

    Griede Geneolgia

Griede Geneolgia

Yew's and Denys's father, and former head of the Geneolgia family until his passing.

  • Ambition Is Evil: His ambition and greed is what mostly drove him, and he would become known as the "ambitious man" by those who knew of his actions in causing the Great Plague.
  • Abusive Parents:
    • He wanted his sons to fight and potentially kill each other over the Sword of the Brave due to it being written in Foundar's writings.
    • He accused Denys of being inferior due to being born illegitimate and told him he would only be worthy if he brought him the seemingly mythical Sword of the Brave. His logs reveal that he was actually quite proud of Denys but he desperately wanted to get to Sword of the Brave.
  • Foreshadowing: Geist spoke of an ambitious man whose decision, along with three others, caused the Great Plague. The ambitious man would turn out to be Griede Geneolgia.
  • Death by Irony: He managed to survive the Great Plague only to die of a common illness years later.
  • Despair Event Horizon: His failure to save Yoko and attempting to drown her in the sea to stop the Great Plague is what killed the last bits of humanity in him. All that was left afterwards was a selfish, greedy man motivated solely by his ambition without a care for anyone else.
  • Greed: It's in his name, and Yoko makes it no secret that most of his actions were done out of avarice.
  • Gone Horribly Right: He was the man who would free Yoko the fox yokai from her long duty in keeping Luxendarc's most dangerous disease in check 'til a cure could be made. Said disease would also run rampant and killed half the world's population before said cure was made and a lot of people would forever be haunted by the events that followed as a result of his actions, including Griede himself.
  • Jumped at the Call: He thought that he was the one meant to free Yoko from her disease, but ended up spreading it instead. As a result, he ended up unleashing both the first and second pandemics and was forced to sink his fleet just to buy time to slow it down.
  • Master Poisoner: He poisoned every single person on his fleet before sinking them, with only himself surviving.
  • Posthumous Character: He's dead by the time the events of Bravely Second takes place, but his actions had a profound effect on the world of Luxendarc and would shape the lives of many persons in the Glanz Empire as well as his sons.
  • Punny Name: Griede Geneolgia.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The man was in no way a saint but like Foundar before him, he wasn't entirely motivated by ambition and greed. He was as capable as his ancestor in showing compassion and empathy towards another person's plight (Yoko), and while his action caused the Great Plague and left behind a lot of traumatized people that were ripe for recruitment into the Glanz Empire, they also allowed the person hosting the disease (Yoko) and the world of Luxendarc to move onwards. While Yoko pulls no punches when it comes to Griede's actions, the suffering they led to, and that whether the outcome could be considered good or bad, she is ultimately grateful to him because of those very same actions.

    Foundar Geneolgia

Foundar Geneolgia

The mysterious founder of House Geneolgia and the first leader of the Three Cavaliers.

  • Abusive Precursors:
    • He founded House Geneolgia through corruption and treachery and if any of his descendants refuse to follow in his footsteps and obey the edicts he left them they end up being forgotten by history.
    • According to Denys Geneolgia, the corruption of the Crystal Orthodoxy started with him.
  • Ambition Is Evil: He was the original "ambitious man" before his descendant, Griede.
  • Arc Words: "Fear the Eye of Foundar."
  • Born in the Wrong Century: The reason he didn't act to save Yoko when he found her was simply a matter of medicine and technology not having advanced enough by the time. He left a hidden message in his edicts to pass the mission on to his descendants; most of those who deciphered them suffered the same problem and had to abandon the mission.
Griede's Log: Foundar decided this eventual rescuer would be a redeeming man, one who would go to fulfill his promise at any cost.
This man must have the vast wealth needed to support a million souls, great military strength enough to strike down a thousand political foes, and technology advanced enough to grant a hundred men hundred-year lives.
In truth, the main reason that those who deciphered the code in the past gave up on becoming this redeeming man was this last requirement, which demanded both medical and technological advances.
  • Everyone Has Standards: For all his faults, Foundar seems to believe in second chances. According to Griede's log, receiving the message "Fear the Eye of Foundar" is a warning that one of his descendants is going against Foundar's wishes, and if one 'corrects their course' (in Foundar's eyes), the message does not repeat and the descendant will not suffer. It's also not exclusive to his more abusive traits; Griede received the message when pursuing Yoko's case because medicine and technology hadn't advanced enough, and did not receive it again when he resumed the endeavour after sufficient advancements had been made.
  • Fallen Hero: He was originally an honorable man before he fell to the temptations of greed and ambition.
  • Inexplicably Awesome: Thanks to seemingly miraculous successes and accomplishments, Foundar rose through the ranks of the Crystal Orthodoxy at ludicrous speed. It's implied that his encounter with Yoko granted him some kind of power that allowed him to become successful.
  • Jerkass: Lord DeRosso and Sage Yulyana, the only characters old enough to have met Foundar in person, remember him as a particularly vile man.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: When one of his descendants does something that goes against the precepts he left for them, they mysteriously receive the message "Fear the Eye of Foundar" smeared in blood. Near the game's final chapter, the party can visit Foundar's grave and meet a shadowed figure that tells them to beware the Eye of Foundar and does nothing more afterwards.
  • Pet the Dog: After finding the plague stricken Yoko, he promised her that one of his descendants would come to save her. He then secretly made it his family's mission to return for Yoko as soon as medical science had advanced enough to help her.
  • Posthumous Character: He's been dead for over a thousand years. Or maybe not, as Griede believes to be the case.
  • Punny Name; Foundar Geneolgia.
  • Sinister Minister: As he rose through the ranks of the Orthodoxy, he used his position to destroy rivals, wealthy houses with treasures he wanted, and generally anyone he didn't like.
  • Unperson: House Geneolgia's mausoleum is filled with blank, misshapen headstones for long forgotten family members who rejected Foundar's ideals.

    The Adventurer

The Adventurer

The red-cloaked figure who appears in dungeons to let you save and buy items, they're accompanied by a loyal fox companion. Bravely Second shows that there is more to them than just that, however. For more detail, see the Divine Beings section.
