Students from Killing Harmony

    Kaede Akamatsu

Kaede Akamatsu

Ultimate Pianist

The first and former leader of her original class, who unexpectedly finds herself plunged back into another, brand-new round of the mutual killing game with some familiar faces... along with several new ones. Though her song was cut dreadfully short before, it seems as though she's been given a chance to start over, and she's determined to make the best of it... but will that determination be enough?

  • The Atoner: Seeks to make up for her past mistakes by bringing an end to this new killing game, while recognizing that doing so won't erase the blood from her hands.
  • Beneath the Mask: While she projects the image of an Ideal Heroine, she's privately riddled with doubts, and is deeply afraid of showing any signs of vulnerability or weakness that might undermine her efforts to unite everyone.
  • Broken Pedestal: Finds herself standing upon one after the first trial, after the other students learn about her willingness to lie if she deems it necessary.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: One side-effect of how heavily she focused upon practicing the piano is that she didn't have much time to devote to other interests. This hampers her ability to connect with others at times due to a lack of common ground.
  • Failure Knight: Her last shot at trying to save everyone from Monokuma's sick games didn't turn out so hot, which both fuels her determination to succeed this time while undercutting her efforts.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her determination to unite the group becomes a double-edged sword; she's so intent upon fixing everything that she's willing to whatever it takes to do so... including manipulating and lying to everyone. Even when that undermines her efforts by making it harder for them to trust her. And her desire to build those bonds up ASAP only makes matters worse; the more she pushes, the more resistance she meets, fueling her desperation...
  • Guile Heroine: Idealism aside, she's willing to use whatever means necessary to obstruct the killing game, including manipulating the others and hiding evidence with the intent of ensuring that the culprit doesn't learn about it until it's too late to counter it.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gundham refers to her as 'the Siren's High Priestess', or simply 'the Siren' for short. There's also her old nickname of 'piano freak', which Monokuma happily uses against her.
  • Magnetic Heroine: Downplayed and Deconstructed. While she still has a knack for convincing others to follow her lead, she finds herself faced with some stubborner classmates this time around, even before her Feet of Clay are exposed. The responsibilities of the role also weigh heavily upon her, all the more so with the knowledge that being in charge didn't work out so well for her last time.
  • Moment of Weakness: Considers the way that she gave into the pressures of her last killing game and tried setting a fatal trap for the mastermind to be one, and suffers several more moments throughout the voyage that she berates herself for. With one of the biggest being how she briefly considered braining Mondo after he nearly killed her during Chapter One.
  • My Greatest Failure: Her Accidental Murder of Rantaro naturally weighs heavily upon her conscience, along with the uncomfortable knowledge that the game continued well after her execution. All her efforts to stop it amounted to very little in the end.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: To her mind, this new killing game is a chance to make amends by doing things right this time.
  • Trauma Button: She can't play the piano anymore. While her execution doesn't seem to have left any physical damage behind, the mental scars remain. Even listening to piano music can trigger traumatic flashbacks and panic attacks.

    Kirumi Tojo

Kirumi Tojo

Ultimate Maid

A versatile caretaker whose title hardly scratches the surface of the scope of her skills, Kirumi strives to put "duty before self". Burdens can be lightened when shared, but can somebody who lends her shoulder to everybody remain standing beneath the weight...?

  • The Caretaker: Takes it upon herself to step into this role for all of the other students, particularly when it comes to their mental well-being.
  • First-Name Basis: At Kaede's request, she refers to her by her given name rather than 'Miss Akamatsu'.
  • Foil: She and Kaede focus upon aiding the others to their own detriment, insisting that they don't require the same level of support that they provide others.
  • Flaw Exploitation: Kirumi takes such pride in her work and her desire to please others that she will never refuse a request she cannot fulfill even if said request goes against her own wishes, something that hasn't gone unnoticed by the other Ultimates. Celeste uses this reasoning to justify stealing Kirumi's furniture for herself (not that she even bothered to ask in the first place), while Kiyo uses it to essentially strongarm her into giving her chance to ride on the Tunnel of Secrets up to him. Even Kaede exploits this once or twice, albeit in a more benevolent fashion: simply 'requesting' that the workaholic maid take a break for herself once in a while (though she later feels disgusted with herself even for that after seeing how easily Kiyo manipulated her).
  • Hidden Depths: While she chiefly considers herself to be the Ultimate Maid, she has picked up a considerable amount of skills in other areas along the way. Such as having learned a considerable amount about soccer while employed by a man who owned a professional team.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gundham refers to her as 'the Apostle of Psyche'.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Even after having her memories restored, she cannot recall why she killed Ryoma.
  • Servile Snarker: Even though she tries hard to maintain a professional attitude, the Ultimate Maid isn't above letting her exasperation at her fellow prisoners' eccentricities show through at times.
Kirumi: (on Teruteru's lewd menu names) ...Mister Hanamura's mannerisms are somehow still a burden even when he isn't in the room. It's almost impressive.
  • My Greatest Failure: Outside of her actions in the mutual killing game, one of her deepest regrets is losing one of her previous masters to his own personal demons. Though she saw how he was suffering, she believed that it wasn't her place to intervene, and blames herself for not stepping in before it was too late.

    Korekiyo Shinguji

Korekiyo Shinguji

Ultimate Anthropologist

A natural outsider and observer, specializing in folklore from around the world, who learns that he has been granted another chance to experience one of their ursine host's maddening games. Firmly believes that hardship can bring out the greatest beauty that mankind has to offer... and oh, aren't the subjects around him just fascinating...? Especially the ones with which he's already familiar...

  • Animal Motifs: His appearance and mannerisms alike are frequently compared to those of a snake.
  • Creepy Good: Kaede insists upon seeing him as such, anyway, constantly finding new justifications for his unsettling behavior.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Inadvertently implies that he's tasted human flesh before while reassuring the others that the delicacies offered at 'Death Row Delights' likely don't include Human Resources.
  • In-Series Nickname: Due to Kiyo's insistent impartiality, Gundham refers to him simply as 'the Observer'.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Like Kirumi, Korekiyo cannot recall what led him to murder his victims.
  • The Rival: Joins Celeste in calling Kaede's character into question, but is relatively more subtle in his methods, undermining her efforts with a knowing smile while maintaining the image of being a friend. Just one with various concerns... and concerning quirks.
  • The Watcher: Fancies himself to be a neutral observer who prefers to stand by and see how the others cope with the killing game. He even cites this as why he refuses to participate in the vote of no-confidence against Kaede, despite how he helped set it into motion in the first place.

    Gonta Gokuhara

Gonta Gokuhara

Ultimate Entomologist

A towering, but gentle young man who nonetheless blackened his hands and thus finds himself among the passengers. Will he ever be able to become a true gentleman, or redeem himself after what he's done...?

  • Failure Knight: Decides that his purpose in this new game is to protect his friends, declaring that he would even sacrifice his talent if that would somehow help him succeed.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Still struggles to find the right words, leading to incidents such as unintentionally questioning whether Kaede regrets what she did to Rantaro.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gundham refers to him as 'Beast-Speaker' and 'God's Colossus'.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Fears that his deeds have ensured that he will never be able to call himself a true gentleman.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Celeste is easily able to trick him into swiping furniture from Kirumi's lab with some quick reassurances that the maid wouldn't mind.

    Kaito Momota

Kaito Momota

Ultimate Astronaut

A self-proclaimed hero and aspiring astronaut, Kaito took up the mantle Kaede left behind her and tried to rally the others to keep standing against Monokuma. Ultimately, however, he followed in her footsteps in more ways than one... and now finds himself playing another round, faced with living reminders of his various failures and setbacks.

  • Failure Knight: Just like Kaede, his efforts to carry on her legacy and unite the others against Monokuma and stop the killing game failed. Repeatedly. Unlike her, he was Forced to Watch as their numbers got whittled down, up until his own demise.
  • Foil: Both he and Kaede strive to lift the group up and rally them against Monokuma. He's much more openly Hot-Blooded about it, quick to yell and curse and threaten, but both share the same issue of being pushy about it, wishing to make up for past mistakes by uniting the group now... and making new ones along the way. Since he survived their original game for much longer, he also got to witness everything that went wrong firsthand, though he can't recall certain details - namely the ones related to the Laser-Guided Amnesia Kirumi and Korekiyo suffered regarding their motives.
  • Ham-to-Ham Combat: Constantly engages in this with Gundham.
  • In-Series Nickname: His self-appointed 'true' title of 'Luminary of the Stars' is already so bombastic that Gundham respectfully uses it instead of making up some equally melodramatic nickname for him.
  • Insistent Terminology: Dubs those around him his 'sidekicks', whether they want to be or not.

    Tsumugi Shirogane

Tsumugi Shirogane

Ultimate Cosplayer

A seamstress and cosplayer with a tendency to fade into the background when she's not gushing about any of her favorite series. This is very much by design, though she also finds it frustrating at times... but there's far more going on with her than can be gleaned at first glance. But just how much does she know about this killing game, anyway...?

  • Ambiguous Situation: The question of what, precisely, each of the students remembers is particularly pertinent with her, given her distinct circumstances in her previous game.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Being able to fly under the radar is a dangerous skill in the right hands.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Downplayed with her tendency to reference various types of fiction, getting sidetracked by her own commentary. Such as when she suggests that Kaede could only turn a situation to her advantage if she happened to be a vampire capable of mesmerizing others.
  • Crime of Self-Defense: What her murder is believed to have been, though the precise circumstances muddle the issue: she was attacked by a malfunctioning K1-B0 and had to put him down in self-defense, but her attempt to cover up the crime afterwards and frame Miu make her look far less innocent.
  • Rejected Apology: Rejects both Kaede's initial apology for her actions during the first trial and her immediate follow-up efforts, pointing out to her that she needs time and space before she can even consider forgiving her for what she's done, and her attempts to force the issue before she's ready aren't helping.
  • Shipper on Deck: Her comments while Mikan's comforting Kaede following Monokuma pushing the latter's Trauma Button in the first trial implies her to be one for those two.

Students from Goodbye Despair

    Teruteru Hanamura

Teruteru Hanamura

Ultimate Cook

The short-stack chef from the countryside who seems to enjoy making lewd comments almost as much as he enjoys cooking. Though he takes a lot of pride in his family and roots, he also fears being dismissed as a country bumpkin due to his humble beginnings, leading to his attempts to pass himself as a well-connected socialite from the big city. Of course, those are far from the only fears he's grappling with, and being thrown into another of Monokuma's games isn't doing his nerves any favors.

  • Accent Slip-Up: Despite his best efforts to mask it, Teruteru's rural/Cajun accent comes out strong whenever he's agitated.
  • Bad Liar: Tries to pass himself off as a 'city slicker' even while gushing over the various country recipes he made to combat his homesickness.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: His mastery of this rivals his cooking skills, due in no small part to his sheer commitment to pervy commentary. Even when he clearly knows that he's not doing himself any favors, he's not very good at reining himself in.
  • Double Entendre: Very fond of using these, lampshaded and otherwise. To the point that it's remarkable when he doesn't pepper some kind of spicy comment in. It's a reflex to the point that he honestly can't seem to help it at times.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gundham refers to him as 'the Herald of Eros'.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: This is the image he's aiming for, anyway. Naturally, not everyone agrees with his self-assessment, or his sense of humor.
  • Sad Clown: All the perverted cracks he makes are at least partly his way of trying to lighten the mood and entertain others, as well as distract from his own trauma, grief and guilt.
  • Serious Business: For all his flirtations, he takes everything to do with food very seriously.
  • Shipper on Deck: Teases Kaede about various potential relationships she could pursue if she so chose.
  • Skewed Priorities: Acts more outraged about 'Death Row Delights' appropriating his image for their "greasy carny fas' food" than that the food in question ('Deep Fried Teruteru with Fries) is a tasteless mockery of his own execution.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Not all of his double entendres are entirely intentional...

    Peko Pekoyama

Peko Pekoyama

Ultimate Swordswoman

A no-nonsense young woman devoted to her duties and all they entailed, until the bitter end. And then she finds herself on the Despair of the Seas, cast adrift without her Protectorate, surrounded by her fellow Blackened and informed that a whole new game is beginning. So now what? Is the victim of Chapter 2, crushed to death by a heavy iron cage.

  • Birds of a Feather: Quickly forms a tentative friendship with Sakura, as the two are both brooding, emotionally-reserved warriors who are easily the most skilled fighters in the group. This friendship grows into a bond of mutual respect and understanding after their first serious sparring match together.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Though Peko remains aloof and cautious throughout the story, learning from Chiaki that Fuyuhiko very likely survived their original killing game relieves her of much of the somberness and guilt that she carried into this one, and she gradually begins to open up and form relationships with others through her interactions with Sakura and (to a lesser extent) Kaito. Sadly, she never gets the chance to fully thaw out before she is killed.
  • Foil: Like her classmate Gundham, she's naturally wary of trusting others, but proposes a more measured approach rather than rejecting everyone as a matter of course.
  • He Knows Too Much: While she reluctantly reveals that she's served as a bodyguard, she warns those present that if they knew who she served, their lives would be forfeit.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has a Downplayed one after a goal gets scored on her during the soccer match, as she looks between the ball and the culprit as a mixture of emotions plays across her face.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gundham addresses her as 'The Swordmaster of Asura's Spirit'.
  • No-Sell: During the soccer match, she's able to block a powerful shot from Gonta with barely more than a flinch of effort.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Kaito seems to treat her as one for Maki (despite still carrying a torch for the latter), on account their similar attitudes, demeanors, builds and occupations.
  • Tell Me How You Fight: Following their sparring session together, Sakura gains a measure of Peko's personality and determines that she is a warrior who knows exactly what she's capable of and accordingly reigns herself in.
Sakura: As we sparred, I noticed something in how you carry yourself in a fight. Your sword is bamboo, but that only means that it cannot stab or slash, not that it is harmless, especially when used on the weakest areas of the body. I could tell you were identifying pressure points every time you prepared an attack… yet, you never followed through on it. You could easily have struck at them and delivered a debilitating -or, perhaps even lethal- blow. Each time, you chose not to and struck somewhere else knowing it would be a less effective attack. In other words, you’re holding back because you know the damage you could do otherwise. Despite that knowledge giving you countless methods to commit a murder, you intentionally stay your hand. Though I never doubted your words, that alone assures me you have no intention of harming anyone aboard so long as you have a choice.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: In-universe, Kaede laments this after her death, since between the swordswoman's withdrawn nature, Kaede's own suspicions of her and her simply choosing to focus on developing other friendships first, she and Peko had never really gotten to know each other and she belatedly wishes she'd at least tried harder.
  • Wooden Katanas Are Even Better: As Sakura observes, her preferred weapon is a bamboo sword that, while unable to wound as easily as a metal blade, is far from harmless in Peko's hands due to her mastery of Pressure Points.
  • Worthy Opponent: Treats Sakura as one, and the sentiment is reciprocated.

    Mikan Tsumiki

Mikan Tsumiki

Ultimate Nurse

A rather timorous nurse-in-training with far too much experience getting the short end of the stick, and is horrified by the limited memories she regains of what she did to earn her spot on Monokuma's new cruise ship.

  • The Dreaded: To Chiaki. Though she's unable to fully explain it to the others, the gamer clearly recalls how dangerous Mikan's true, Ultimate Despair self can be and remains wary of her skittish and self-deprecating behavior, especially after Mikan recovers part of her lost memories from the Tunnel of Secrets.
  • Fragile Flower: The stresses of the killing games and discovering that she murdered two people has not done her any favors emotionally, worsening her preexisting tendencies towards apologizing for her existence and trying to placate and please others.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Another student who cannot recall what drove her to murder her victims.
  • Marshmallow Hell: Accidentally inflicted this upon Kaede when she tripped and they got tangled up together.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: The weight of what she's done threatens to immediately crush her underneath it, and she's one of the last to leave the room where they have their memories restored, only managing it with help.

    Gundham Tanaka

Gundham Tanaka

Ultimate Breeder

A young man who purports to be a Sorcerous Overlord intent upon dragging the world into ruin. If one were to go off of that alone, his presence among the blackened may not seem all that surprising - but judging by such shallow measures is a fool's game, is it not? Surely the 'Four Dark Devas of Destruction', his trusted cohorts who have so cleverly disguised themselves as mere hamsters, are proof enough of that!

  • Foil:
    • Bombastic as they both are, Gundham's attitude regarding the new game is the polar opposite of Kaito's, as he's far more cynical regarding the trustworthiness of the other participants. He also doesn't attempt to force anyone to heed his words of warning, whereas Kaito tries to badger them into compliance.
    • He's also less confrontational than Celeste and Korekiyo, preferring to say his piece and let that be the end of it rather than engaging in longer arguments.
  • Ham-to-Ham Combat: The typical result whenever he and Kaito are together for any length of time.
  • Incoming Ham: Causes a hilarious variant during the Prologue when his introductory speech to Tsumugi and subsequent discussion with her as to what to do about Celeste still being stuck in her locker carries far enough that Kaede is able to hone in on it and lead her group straight to him.
  • The Nicknamer: Quickly dubs Kaede 'the Siren's High Priestess', and begins assigning titles to his fellow prisoners as he gets to know them. The only one who gets spared from being saddled with one is Kaito, by virtue of how he introduces himself with "his true title" of 'the Luminary of the Stars'.
  • The Rival: Joins Celeste and Korekiyo in immediately challenging Kaede and Kaito's insistence on banding together. Of those three, he's the most straightforward and no-nonsense about it, bluntly declaring the reasons for his distrust, but also not going out of his way to complicate matters further. He winds up butting heads with Kaito more than Kaede in the process.

    Chiaki Nanami

Chiaki Nanami

Ultimate Gamer

A soft-spoken girl whose gentle and sleepy demeanor hide a sharp, calculating mind capable of keeping up with whatever challenges the various video games she's played have thrown at her. Of course, the killing games are a different beast entirely, aren't they...?

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Underestimate her at your own peril. She's more focused than she tends to act. Kaede also notes that just like the rest of them, she murdered somebody in order to wind up there.
  • Foil: Her guile and motivational skills rival Kaede's, though she's much less overt and potentially overbearing in her efforts, preferring a subtler hand and gentler nudges.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gundham refers to her as 'She of the Iron Thumbs'.
  • Sleepy Head: Frequently takes extended naps and has a habit of yawning or dozing off slightly whenever she isn't gaming or otherwise engaged with someone... and occasionally even when she is. At one point she even manages to fall fast asleep while standing straight up, to the astonishment of everyone present.
  • Verbal Tic: Retains her habit of appending '...I think' to the end of various statements. Kaede chides her early on for this, saying the uncertainty undercuts her stance.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: One of her favored ways of encouraging others, such as her attempts to convince Kaede in the wake of the first trial.

Students from Trigger Happy Havoc

    Leon Kuwata

Leon Kuwata

Ultimate Baseball Star

An athlete whose meteoric rise to champion levels didn't sit well with his jealous teammates, or with Leon himself, for that matter, as his dreams lay elsewhere. All that came crashing down overnight when he went to the wrong room and found himself in a fight for his life... winning the battle, but losing the war. At least until he wound up here.

  • Butt-Monkey: His introduction involves him finding out that his reputation doesn't precede him with Kaede, as she has no idea who he is, and rejects his attempt to flirt with her by offering to make her a 'cute mascot' for his band. Then he gets teased for having a 'peculiarly feminine screaming voice', and Kaede refers to all three of them as 'weird guys'.
  • Fragile Speedster: Is able to outpace even Sakura and Peko when everyone's trying to flee the ballroom during the Prologue.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gundham calls him 'the Phoenix of the Fiery Diamond', or just 'Phoenix' for short, owing to his red hair and (former) talent.
  • Insistent Terminology: Every time one of his classmates makes reference to his own murder, he'll state that it was "self-defense."
  • Never Be Hurt Again: Prior experiences make him wary of accepting any invitations to hang out in somebody else's room, and he insults Kaito for even considering it.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Goads Kaito into accepting a dare from him with this, only to have his own tactic turned against him when Kaito declares that he wants to play a round of baseball with him when he wins.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: According to Korekiyo and Gonta, his shrieks nearly matched those Mikan made when Gonta burst out of his locker.

    Mondo Owada

Mondo Owada

Ultimate Biker Gang Leader

The former leader of the Crazy Diamonds bike gang, taking over the role after his older brother Daiya was killed in a tragic racing accident... one he blames himself completely for, as he was the one who challenged him to that fateful showdown. His determination to keep the final promise he made to Daiya by any means necessary led him to some dark places... and now it's brought him here, to another damned killing game.

  • Classical Anti-Hero: Gundham quickly dubs him an anti-hero, and indeed, the biggest hurdles in Mondo's way may well be his own self-doubt, temper, and other issues.
  • Declaration of Protection: Quickly makes one towards Kaede and Chiaki after they wake up together, pledging to protect both from whomever kidnapped them all in the first place.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: Is fit to be tied after learning that Celeste manipulated Hifumi into killing Taka, then offed him as well, all for the sake of what he calls "a fuckin' fairy tale castle".
  • Foil:
    • He, Kaede and Kaito are all former leaders privately grappling with guilt over their past failures. All three sincerely want to make up for their past mistakes, but balk at the prospect of admitting their weaknesses to anyone, preferring to present a strong front. Unlike the V3 alumni, he doesn't really aim to step back into the leader role, having far less faith in his ability to serve as anything more than Dumb Muscle. His more cynical attitude naturally clashes with their forcibly positive vibes, as well.
    • Both he and Kaede blame themselves for a death that they weren't fully responsible for; while they created the circumstances that led to said deaths, neither is as culpable of they believe themselves to be, and both reject the notion that they aren't completely to blame.
  • His Story Repeats Itself: Once again, he attacks Monokuma when the bear first reveals himself, and nearly kills Kaede with a dumbbell in a fit of rage.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gundham dubs him 'the Spirit of Enkidu'.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Is determined to kill Hifumi after finding out that he killed Taka. He's snapped out of it once he nearly kills Kaede the same way he killed Chihiro.
  • Survivor Guilt: Regarding his brother, and how he was killed saving him from that damned truck. Finding out about the death of Ishimaru hits him hard as well.

    Celestia Ludenberg

Celestia 'Celeste' Ludenberg (Taeko Yasuhiro)

Ultimate Gambler

Known as the 'Queen of Liars', her luck seemed to run dry when she made a bid for freedom and fortune that missed its mark. Yet it appears she's been dealt into another round regardless. Though she can't say she cares much for the company... after all, who in their right mind would be happy about being surrounded by a bunch of murderers? She's the killer of chapter one, having accidently stabbed Hifumi after they got into a fight.

  • Batman Gambit: Fond of using these, banking on others to react the way she predicts in response to her actions.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Gave Kaede a few brief pointers on bluffing after their poker game together, which Kaede then used to out-bluff Celeste in the first trial and trick her into contradicting part of her alibi.
  • I Lied: When finally forced to admit that she deceived the others about the extent of her memory loss, she's incredibly blunt about it.
  • In-Series Nickname: The Queen of Liars. Gundham also dubs her 'the Ebon Witch'.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Declares that she cannot recall why or who she killed during her original game. This ends up being subverted, but given that it's Celeste, was it any surprise she was lying?
  • Refuge in Audacity: How does she deal with her lab not being decorated precisely to her liking...? By convincing Gonta to swipe furniture from Kirumi's lab, claiming that the maid wouldn't mind. Probably.
  • The Rival: Like Byakuya before her, she serves as a haughty Foil to Kaede, questioning the extent of her devotion to the idealism and morality she trumpets.
  • Squashed Flat: Her new execution.
  • This Is Going to Suck: Upon seeing that Hifumi is among her fellow captives, she immediately declares that they must be in hell. She has a similar reaction to learning that she's positioned between Kaito and Gundham during trials.
  • The Unapologetic: Say what you will about her; she will not fold in the face of anyone's disapproval.

    Hifumi Yamada

Hifumi Yamada

Ultimate Fanfic Creator

Devoted artist who takes his craft extremely seriously, and Celeste's devoted follower and friend. Or lackey, if you'd rather. He prefers the former; she prefers the latter. He's the victim of chapter one, stabbed by Celeste by accident.

  • In-Series Nickname: Refers to himself as 'the Alpha and the Omega'.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Like Celeste, he says that he can't remember critical details about his crime. Namely who he killed and why. He was just following her lead.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: Having been burned in the past by seemingly nice people stringing him along, he's leery of accepting any offers of friendship at face value. He even informs Kaede that this is why he considers Celeste to be his Only Friend; despite her abuse, she's still honest, and doesn't hide the way she feels about him... even when it's bad.

    Sakura Ogami

Sakura Ogami

Ultimate Martial Artist

MMA champion turned unwilling mole turned murderer... or so she believes, anyway. The truth behind what happened to her evades her grasp, leaving her questioning her own nobility and character along with that of everyone around her.

  • Amazonian Beauty: Teruteru certainly thinks so, being quite pleased to be seated next to her in the trial. Predictably, she doesn't quite appreciate the attention.
  • Birds of a Feather: Quickly forms a tentative friendship with Peko, as the two are both brooding, emotionally-reserved warriors who are easily the most skilled fighters in the group. This friendship grows into a bond of mutual respect and understanding after their first serious sparring match together.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: To her dismay, she cannot recall whose life she took or why she did so. After all, if she knew that she offed herself rather than give in to his demands, she'd be a lot less susceptible to Monokuma's manipulations this time around...
  • Tell Me How You Fight: Following their sparring session together, Peko determines from how she carries herself that Sakura is exactly the brave, honorable warrior she presents herself as.
Peko: When you fight, there’s nothing dishonest in your movements. Though you’re difficult to read, there’s a reliability in your style; your strikes are consistently honorable even when a more underhanded maneuver would have been more tactically sound. Your preference for offense shows a great bit of courage as well. Not many people would be willing to risk blocking a strike from my sword when dodging is an option, let alone attempt to disarm me in the process. No coward would do such things. Though I was uncertain of you before, after seeing that, I am convinced.
  • Worthy Opponent: Considers Peko as one, and the feeling is mutual.

The Captain

    Monokuma

Monokuma

The Series Mascot who's in charge of this ship of fools, cheerfully encouraging its passengers to hurry up and make with the carnage already!

  • Hope Crusher: Truly enjoys being this, taking pleasure in the pain he inflicts even while claiming that he's not really at fault.
  • My God, You Are Serious!: Is on both ends of this at the start of the game, as it takes him a while to realize that his passengers aren't playing dumb and just pretending not to know what he's talking about when he calls them murderers... and he, in turn, forcibly jogs their memories, forcing them to recall their crimes.
  • Never My Fault: Despite being the one forcing his unwilling passengers to endure various horrors and presenting them with motives specifically meant to provoke them into killing, he staunchly insists that he's not responsible for any of their decisions.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Acts this way towards Kaede, frequently singling her out for extra helpings of teasing and torment.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Makes a habit of popping up briefly to mock the passengers — especially Kaede — before leaving just as quickly as he came.
  • Trauma Button: Enjoys stomping on these for all they're worth, such as taunting his Blackened students with an all too familiar-looking remote and making various references to their respective executions.

    The Monokubs

The Monokubs

As a Group

  • Demoted to Extra: Rather than helping their father oversee the new killing game, they're primarily playing backup this time, being in charge of restoring the participants' memories and helping run Felony Funland.

Monotaro

  • His Story Repeats Itself: Following another head trauma, he once again mistakes another pretty blonde in pink for his 'Mommy'. Kaito, meanwhile, gets labeled his 'Step-Daddy' simply by virtue of being the only candidate in the immediate area.
