The Heroes

    Odette

Odette

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maxresdefault_662.jpg
Voiced by: Kelly Sheridan
The main protagonist, played by Barbie. She is a baker's daughter who falls under a curse that turns her into a swan and learns she's destined to save the Enchanted Forest.
  • Action Survivor: Although she's not an action heroine, she's brave and quick on her feet when the going gets tough. She saves Daniel's life from Rothbart's magic by using her crystal's protection, comes up with the plan to rescue Erasmus, and easily outmaneuvers all of Rothbart's raven minions while flying in the swan form that she's had for only three days.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Combined with Adaptation Expansion. In most versions of the play, Odette is a princess kidnapped and cursed by Rothbart for unclear reasons (in the earlier versions she had a Wicked Stepmother whom Rothbart served). Here, she's not actually royalty at the start, just an ordinary girl who runs a bakery with her family. She wanders into the Enchanted Forest of her own accord and Rothbart curses her because she's destined to defeat him.
  • Animal Motif: Swans, of course. She's cursed to turn into a swan by day and some of her clothing resembles swan feathers; her wedding dress even includes a pair of sparkly wings and a crown modelled after a swan. Swans are often thought to represent grace and love; Odette is noted to be a graceful dancer and it's her love for Daniel and her friends that enables her to stop Rothbart.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: She talks Daniel out of his plan to return with an army to challenge Rothbart, arguing he's too powerful. When Daniel says he's willing to risk it, she pointedly asks him if he's also willing to endanger his men, which makes him relent.
  • Barrier Warrior: Odette cannot be harmed by any magic, as the magic crystal forms an impenetrable barrier around her. She exploits this by standing in front of Daniel when Rothbart tries to kill him with his magic, using the crystal's barrier to shield the prince from harm.
  • Character Development: She starts out as a shy girl with little self-confidence and develops into a courageous person who is more secure with herself.
  • The Chosen One: Odette is chosen by the magic crystal to eventually defeat Rothbart.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Her self-doubt initially holds her back from reaching her full potential, with her learning to overcome this during her quest to break Rothbart's curse.
  • Forced Transformation: She gets turned into a sapient swan by Rothbart. The Fairy Queen is able to alter the curse so that she can become human at night, but unless Odette finds a way to break the curse permanently, she becomes a swan again the moment the sun rises.
  • Friend to All Living Things: When a bluebird falls into a bowl of flour while trying to imitate her dancing in the bakery, she immediately helps it out and sends it on its way after gently dusting it off.
  • Gorgeous Garment Generation: Her dress is magically transformed twice, once into a pink gown for her evening with Daniel and again into a sparkly swan feathered gown.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has blonde hair and is compassionate and warm-hearted.
  • Insecure Love Interest: When the fairies are discussing her and Daniel falling in love to break the curse, she has doubts because she doesn't think she's special enough to win Daniel's heart, especially as he's a prince while she's a baker's daughter and a "nobody". The Fairy Queen proceeds to list her virtues to prove otherwise, and it's made pretty obvious Daniel is already smitten with her.
  • Missing Mom: She lives with her father and older sister, but her mother is absent and presumably deceased.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: She wears a pink dress and a swan-feathered gown that's mostly pink with blue accents, whereas Prince Daniel has two blue outfits.
  • Rags to Royalty: Odette is a "Cinderella" example of this; she's just an ordinary village girl and becomes a princess (and presumably future queen) upon marrying Prince Daniel.
  • Refusal of the Call: She initially balks at being told she's the chosen one and tries to go home, saying she's not the right person for the task and has never "overcome anything".
  • Shrinking Violet: At the beginning, she's shy and self-effacing to the point of being mousey. After being turned into a swan, she shows and learns that she's much more courageous than she thought.
  • Swans A-Swimming: Obviously. She's a graceful dancer who is cursed to turn into a swan by day, and her main outfit is a gown decorated to resemble swan feathers.
  • Sweet Baker: She's a baker's daughter who helps make cookies and cakes, and is a kind, shy Nice Girl.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to both Marie and Lila's tomboys. She's a placid, soft-spoken Shrinking Violet who turns into a graceful swan; Marie is her adventurous older sister who's always out on a horseback ride and Lila is a tough-talking unicorn who's always ready to fight Rothbart.

    Daniel

Prince Daniel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/daniel_87.png
Voiced by: Mark Hildreth
The crown prince of the kingdom where Odette lives and her love interest.
  • Adaptation Name Change: The prince's name goes from Siegfried to Daniel.
  • Disappeared Dad: As per the original ballet, his father isn't in the picture.
  • Fat and Skinny: He's noticeably thinner than his best friend, Reggie.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: More like second date marriage. Two days after they met and had their first date, Daniel asks "Odette" (in reality, Odile disguised as Odette) to marry him during the royal ball.
  • Momma's Boy: Not to unhealthy extremes, but he's clearly close to his mother. When she tells him to choose a lovely woman to dance with at the ball while he waits for his bride-to-be to show up, he invites her to dance (which she jokingly calls him a rascal for).
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Both of his two outfits are mainly blue, whereas Odette wears a pink dress and a mostly pink swan-feathered gown.
  • Rebel Prince: Daniel would rather explore than rule and isn't interested in settling down despite his mother's urging, though he changes his mind about getting married pretty sharpish upon meeting Odette.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: He proclaims his love for who he thinks is Odette, not realizing she's actually Odile in disguise, which causes the magic crystal protecting Odette to lose its power. In fairness, he had no way of knowing that would happen because Odette didn't get the chance to explain to him that true love would break the curse. Luckily, it all works out okay in the end, but most of the climax is inadvertently Daniel's fault (which is admittedly also true to the ballet).
  • Uptown Girl: Gender-flipped. He's an Uptown Boy to Odette, who in this version doesn't start out as royalty. She surprises him when she reveals she knows who he is despite them never having interacted, due to having seen him from afar in her village (which is right next door to the castle). While Odette has some insecurities about being unworthy of him, neither Daniel or his mother have any issues with him marrying a peasant rather than a princess.
  • Warrior Prince: He doesn't get much of a chance to actually show it, but he's shown to be proficient with a bow and arrow at the beginning (being able to hit a very specific spot on a sack of feed all the way across a garden) and is quick enough on his feet to dodge Rothbart's magic blasts. He's also able to do an Unnecessary Combat Roll when ducking, which leads to Rothbart accidentally turning Odile into a pig when aiming at him.

    Lila

Lila

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ud7d1l5.png
Voiced by: Venus Terzo
An outgoing unicorn from the Enchanted Forest. Her venture into town in search of a way to stop Rothbart draws Odette's attention, leading her to the forest.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: She doesn't actually get into a fight (save for using her horn to knock a raven unconscious), but she's very gung-ho about taking action and is raring to battle Rothbart whenever she sees him.
  • Canon Foreigner: The original ballet didn't have any unicorns.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She has a sassy comment for virtually every situation.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Usually rather abrasive and not that warm to Odette at first, but she's a loyal and stalwart friend when the chips are down. Notably, she's the one who tells Odette she's braver than she thinks.
  • Large Ham: She can be a real drama queen. Venus Terzo clearly had a ball when playing her. Special mention goes to this line after she is reprimanded by the Fairy Queen for going to the village.
Lila: It's all over. I'm done for. [scoffs] Goodbye, world. [Lila faints]
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: She spends the initial part of Rothbart's first confrontation with Odette boasting about how the appearance of The Chosen One means he's doomed. While Rothbart probably wasn't going to let Odette escape unharmed in any case, Lila's taunting certainly doesn't help the situation.
  • Sweet Tooth: She asks Odette's father for there to be frosting flowers on Odette and Daniel's wedding cake, just because she loves them.
  • Talking Animal: She's a unicorn who can talk. Unlike the forest children, she's not a transformed human and seems to be that way naturally.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Odette's girly girl. She's a tough unicorn who's always down to fight Rothbart, while Odette is a soft-spoken Shrinking Violet.
  • Unicorn: Obviously. The villagers try to capture her because of her status as such a rare and fantastical animal, and she occasionally gets her horn stuck in trees. She also uses her horn to magically open the hidden entrance to the Enchanted Forest.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Lila gets a good scolding by the Fairy Queen after sneaking off into the village. From Lila's reaction, it happened for the umpteenth time.

    Fairy Queen

Fairy Queen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/720fc6fe4c063ad8a6afff4b037e4265.png
Voiced by: Kathleen Barr (English), Jannemien Cnossen (Dutch)
The benevolent ruler of the Enchanted Forest.
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: She's a fairy with magic powers and is a kind and just queen; unfortunately, her powers are growing weaker every day because of Rothbart's influence and so she needs Odette to defeat him. She's still got enough power to enable cursed people like Odette to turn human again at night (and create fancy outfits). Once Rothbart is defeated, her powers are fully restored.
  • Big Good: She's the ruler of the Enchanted Forest and Rothbart's kind-hearted cousin, who helps the heroine Odette with her quest.
  • Canon Foreigner: There's no equivalent to her in the ballet.
  • Clashing Cousins: She and Rothbart are cousins, as well as bitterly opposed enemies over which of them will rule the Enchanted Forest.
  • Everyone Calls Her "Barkeep": She's always called the Fairy Queen, which is clearly her title, but her real name is never revealed.
  • Forced Transformation: Rothbart turns her into a mouse when she tries to stop him at the end. Thanks to his defeat, it only lasts for a few minutes.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She wears a light purple gown and is a benevolent, graceful queen.
  • The High Queen: A kind, motherly monarch who rules the forest with a wise and just hand.
  • Mama Bear: She acts like a mother figure to Lila and the forest children. She also immediately takes Odette under her wing when the girl is cursed by Rothbart, acting quickly by putting the Magic Crystal into a protective crown for her to wear.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When Odette says she's not cut out to take on Rothbart, the Fairy Queen is very understanding and allows her to leave, saying they can't force her to risk her life for them. Once Odette does agree to help, the Fairy Queen does everything she can to help her succeed.

    The Forest Animals

Carlita, Ivan, Jenny, Kelly, Liana, and Marisa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/forest_animals.jpg
Left to right: Jenny, Marisa, Ivan, Kelly, Carlita, and Liana
Carlita voiced by: Nicole Oliver
Ivan voiced by: Ian James Corlett
Kelly voiced by: Chantal Strand
Six children cursed to become animals.
  • All There in the Manual: The other forest animals besides Carlita, Ivan, and Kelly are only named in the toy line.
  • Animal-Eared Headband: All of them wear some variation of these, with Jenny being the most notable.
  • Animal Motif: Skunks for Carlita, porcupines for Ivan, mice for Jenny, cygnets for Kelly, foxes for Liana, and fawns for Marisa.
  • Canon Foreigner: They don't exist in the ballet, though one could see them as the movie's equivalent to the ballet's swan maidens (as both groups are other people forced to share in Odette's curse).
  • Forced Transformation: Like Odette, they are cursed to become animals until the spell is broken.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Marisa wears a purple dress.
  • Living Prop: The children who aren't Ivan or Carlita are basically this, only being there to fill out scenes and little else. Kelly gets one line (she tells Odette she looks beautiful in her swan-feathered dress), but the others don't even speak.
  • Malaproper: Ivan gets in a pretty amusing one, that Carlita has to correct. Very much justified, considering he's apparently five.
Ivan: We thank you from the hearts of our bottoms!
Carlita: "Bottom of our hearts", Ivan.
  • Morphic Resonance: Their outfits in human form share the same colors and patterns of their animal forms.
  • The One Guy: Ivan is the only male forest child.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Jenny and Kelly wear pink dresses.
  • Red Is Heroic: Liana wears a red dress.
  • Running Gag: Carlita constantly reminds Ivan of his quills with a "Quills, Ivan!" every time he moves too close, due to his porcupine form.
  • The Voiceless: Jenny, Liana, and Marisa do not speak.
  • Those Two Guys: Carlita and Ivan are inseparable and never appear without each other.
  • Tomboy: Carlita is a sassy little girl who was transformed into a skunk, and she uses her new abilities to annoy Rothbart and Odile.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Ivan looks like a small boy but, as voiced by Ian James Corlett, he sounds much older than he looks.

    Erasmus

Erasmus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/erasmus_1.png
Voiced by: Michael Dobson
A troll who lives in the library that holds the legendary Book of Forest Lore.
  • All Trolls Are Different: He's absent-minded and initially seems intimidating, but he's friendly. Lila lampshades this trope by telling Odette about the rumors of all trolls being bloodthirsty child-eaters, something that doesn't put Odette at ease when they're traveling to visit him.
  • Big Shadow, Little Creature: In his introduction, he shows up with a massive projected shadow while roaring at Odette and Lila. Then he actually comes down from the high-up stand he was behind, revealing he's quite short and hunched-over.
  • Canon Foreigner: Like almost everyone else in the Enchanted Forest, he doesn't originate from the ballet.
  • Distressed Dude: Rothbart kidnaps him to get the Book of Forest Lore from him, and Odette has to rescue him with help from her friends.
  • Emerging from the Shadows: He does this in his introduction when Odette and Lila enter his home, revealing himself to be much smaller than his shadow.
  • Forced Transformation: The poor guy gets turned into a worm for Rothbart's ravens to eat after being kidnapped. He only survives by hiding until Odette can find him.
  • Grumpy Old Man: He's ancient, and emotionally grouses for a bit about how old he's getting when Lila updates him on how all his forest friends are doing in retirement. He's very personable outside of that, though.
  • Incoming Ham: The way he introduces himself is very over the top, and that's before Odette and Lila even see him properly.
Erasmus: THE BOOK OF FOREST LORE?!
  • Nice Guy: He's a little out there, but he's good-natured and pleasant to Odette when they meet.

    Marie

Marie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yazo9fi.png
Voiced by: Kathleen Barr

Odette's older sister; although she's the opposite to Odette in many ways they still care for other deeply.

  • All Girls Like Ponies: She's an avid horse rider and enjoys going on horse treks.
  • Big Sister Instinct: When Odette goes missing, Marie spends hours searching for her and is visibly upset that she hasn't turned up, especially as this isn't like Odette.
  • Canon Foreigner: She doesn't exist in the ballet, where Odette has no relatives (save for a mother mentioned in the backstory of the original production).
  • Cool Big Sis: Odette admires Marie for how fearless and confident she is. Marie tries to encourage Odette to join her on an adventure, but she declines due to nerves.
  • Put on a Bus: She disappears from the plot after she and her father go out looking for Odette; she turns back up in the ending to attend her sister's wedding.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: She and Odette are established to be opposites; while Odette is quite nervous with low self-esteem and worries what other people will think of her, Marie is confident and adventurous. Odette is a bit of a homebody, albeit mostly due to lack of confidence, while Marie prefers to be off exploring. Odette gradually demonstrates herself to be brave in her own way.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to her sister Odette's girly girl. She's adventurous, extroverted, and always out on a horseback ride, while Odette is shy and introverted.

    Odette's Father

Odette's Father

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8mqqzr.png
Voiced by: Garry Chalk

A local baker and the father of Odette and Marie.

  • Good Parents: He's a loving father to both his daughters, though especially Odette; he compliments Odette's dancing and tries to encourage her to go out dancing with the other villagers. When Odette goes missing, he's very concerned and joins Marie in searching for her.
  • Put on a Bus: He disappears from the plot after he and Marie go out looking for Odette. Rothbart does use magic to take on a similar appearance to his during the ball to trick Daniel, though the baker himself doesn't show up in person again until he attends Odetteā€™s wedding in the ending.
  • So Proud of You: In the ending, he tells Odette he's proud of her for saving the Enchanted Forest and for finding happiness with Prince Daniel.
  • Sweet Baker: He runs a bakery and is depicted as a kind, hardworking man who wants the best for his kids.
  • Unnamed Parent: His name is never given.

Antagonists

    Rothbart

Rothbart

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rothbart_0.jpg
Voiced by: Kelsey Grammer
The Fairy Queen's evil cousin who seeks to rule over the Enchanted Forest himself.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the original ballet, his motives for transforming Odette are left vague and up for different productions to interpret. In this movie, he's explicitly out to kill her because she's The Chosen One who was selected by the magic crystal to save the forest from him.
  • Adaptation Species Change: He's an Ominous Owl-like creature in the ballet, but turns into a vulture here.
  • Ambition Is Evil: As explained by the Fairy Queen, he was ambitious even as a child and always wanted to become the ruler of the Enchanted Forest. Naturally, he took it poorly when he got passed over in favor of his cousin.
  • Big Bad: He's the main antagonist of the movie, as in most versions of the ballet; he seeks to take over the Enchanted Forest and curses Odette because she's destined to defeat him. He would've killed her outright if it weren't for the magic crystal protecting her, so he seeks to find a way around this to claim the crystal for himself.
  • Big "NO!": Rothbart lets out two of them when he is being destroyed by the magic crystal because of Odette and Daniel's love and sacrifice for each other.
  • Clashing Cousins: He's the bitter enemy of the Fairy Queen, his cousin and rival in power over the Enchanted Forest.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: For all his faults, he really does love his daughter Odile and often calls her his "little dove" (sometimes "starling" or "sparrow" instead). When he accidentally turns her into a pig (he was aiming at Daniel, but hit her instead), he's genuinely distraught and only leaves her because the heroes are escaping.
  • Evil Is Bigger: He's much taller than Odette, which is noteworthy because virtually no other Barbie movie villain has that drastic of a height difference with the heroine. When they first meet, he has to bow at the waist quite a bit to be near eye-level with her.
  • Evil Brit: He has a noticeable British accent.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Rothbart uses black magic with a powerful ring; his powers include turning people into animals and blasting people with dark energy.
  • Forced Transformation: Hands these out like candy, from turning the forest children into animals to cursing Odette to be a swan and transforming Erasmus into a worm. Fittingly, he (or what's left of him) gets turned into a cuckoo clock at the end after the crystal's power destroys him.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He stormed out of the Enchanted Forest out of jealousy and resentment when his uncle chose the Fairy Queen as his successor over him. Upon returning years later, he used his newfound dark powers to try and overthrow her.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He's defeated when the magic crystal that he obsessed over stealing from Odette is powered up by Odette and Daniel's love when he wears it, exploding and practically killing him.
  • Kidnapping Bird of Prey: He uses his vulture form to abduct Erasmus by swooping in and carrying him off in his talons.
  • Lean and Mean: He's as tall and thin as he is evil.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Twice.
    • When Odette first learns that she's The Chosen One, she thinks there must be some mistake and decides to go home, reluctantly leaving the residents of the Enchanted Forest to their fates. Then Rothbart shows up and transforms her into a swan, essentially forcing her to defeat him if she ever wants to return to a normal life.
    • After tricking Daniel into de-powering the Crystal, Rothbart takes it for himself. This proves to be his downfall when Daniel and Odette are blasted with magic while trying to protect each other. Their love restores the Crystal's power, and it promptly destroys him.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Rothbart transforms Odette, then immediately tries to kill her. He succeeds in disintegrating her, but the magic crystal saves her.
  • Sinister Schnoz: Rothbart has a huge, beak-like nose, fitting with his bird motif.
  • Sorcerous Overlord: He aspires to becomes one over the Enchanted Forest, claiming it's his "destiny".
  • Vile Vulture: His animal form is a vulture, and he's a nasty, overly ambitious piece of work.

    Odile

Odile

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/odile.png
Voiced by: Maggie Wheeler
Rothbart's spoiled daughter.
  • Adaptational Ugliness: In the original ballet, Odile is a beautiful vamp whom Rothbart transforms to appear as Princess Odette. In this movie, she's a sallow and unpleasant-looking Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Odile is called the "Black Swan" in the ballet, implying she turns into one. Here, she turns into a vulture like her father.
  • Annoying Laugh: She has a very distinctive bird-like cackle.
  • Ascended Extra: In the ballet, Odile only appears in one scene at the ball and nowhere else. Here, she's a major character from the start.
  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: She's unappreciative of her father's gifts and demands he give her more jewels and a crown, even when she has a box full of them.
  • Butt-Monkey: She gets sprayed by skunks at Carlita's command, accidentally turned into a pig by her own father, and reduced to being a maid in Erasmus' library at the end after her and Rothbart's defeats. Not that she doesn't deserve it, mind you.
  • Daddy's Girl: Rothbart adores her and showers her with gifts, even though her whining does annoy him.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Very close to her father, and just as wicked.
  • Defeat Means Menial Labor: Following her father's defeat, she's forced to become a common maid in Erasmus' vault, while Rothbart is transformed into a cuckoo clock.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Has blackish-purplish hair and pale skin.
  • Forced Transformation: She gets unintentionally turned into a pig (maintaining her hair, only shorter, and earrings) by her old man. She gets better off-screen at the end.
  • Giggling Villain: She lets out her cackling Annoying Laugh in almost every scene she's in.
  • Lean and Mean: She's very slender, as well as cruel and contemptuous.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother is never mentioned.
  • Poke the Poodle: Unlike her father, who plots to conquer the Enchanted Forest and eventually the kingdom itself if he can, all she cares about is being the most stylish creature around.
  • Spoiled Brat: She's constantly demanding things from her father and taking him for granted. When she learns that the magic crystal has formed into a crown for Odette, she immediately starts whining to her father that she wants one, despite already having a chest full of jewels at home.
  • Vain Sorceress: Possibly. The fact that she can also turn into a vulture implies she shares some of her father's magic, but she seems to use it only to maintain her looks.
  • Vile Vulture: Like her father, she turns into a vulture and is decidedly repellent to be around.
