King Randolph's twelve lively, unique daughters.
  • Accidental Misnaming: When wearing the same dresses as ordered by Rowena; Courtney gets mistaken for Lacey, Edeline gets mistaken for Delia, and both Fallon and Kathleen get mistaken for Blair.
  • Alphabetical Theme Naming: The sisters' names are all alphabetical, starting with A down to L. (Ashlyn, Blair, Courtney, Delia, Edeline, Fallon, Genevieve, Hadley, Isla, Janessa, Kathleen and Lacey)
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Each princess' dress is a distinct color:
    • Ashlyn: Violet
    • Blair: Red
    • Courtney: Royal blue
    • Delia: Green
    • Edeline: Orange
    • Fallon: Orchid pink
    • Genevieve: Hot pink
    • Hadley: Teal
    • Isla: Purple
    • Janessa: Sky blue
    • Kathleen: Tangerine
    • Lacey: Lilac
  • Daddy's Girl: They are all incredibly close to their father, who they lovingly call "Papa".
  • Flower Motifs: Each of the sisters has a specific flower they're associated with, and said flowers can be seen on their gowns and are printed on the front of their individual copies of their mother's storybook.
    • Ashlyn: Geraniumnote
    • Blair: Larkspurnote
    • Courtney: Forget-me-notnote
    • Delia: Sunflowernote
    • Edeline: Honeysucklenote
    • Fallon: Camellianote
    • Genevieve: Pink rosenote
    • Hadley: Narcissusnote
    • Isla: Lily of the valleynote
    • Janessa: Jonquilnote
    • Kathleen: Daisynote
    • Lacey: White lilynote
  • Gemstone Motifs: Each sister has a favorite gemstone that they are associated with.
    • Ashlyn: Garnetnote
    • Blair: Rubynote
    • Courtney: Sapphirenote
    • Delia: Peridotnote
    • Edeline: Citrinenote
    • Fallon: Pearlnote
    • Genevieve: Pink opalnote
    • Hadley: Topaznote
    • Isla: Emeraldnote
    • Janessa: Aquamarinenote
    • Kathleen: Pink diamondnote
    • Lacey: Amethystnote
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: There's twelve of them altogether, including two sets of twins and one set of triplets.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Each of the sisters wears one. Most of the girls, especially the older ones, wear gowns with a frilled hem, short overskirt that is edged with ruffles, a neckline trimmed with lace, and little puff sleeves.
  • Plenty of Blondes: Five out of the twelve sisters are blondes: Delia, Fallon, Genevieve, Hadley, and Lacey. It's likely they inherited it from their father, who is also blonde.
  • Practically Different Generations: The youngest sisters, the triplets Janessa, Kathleen and Lacey, celebrate their fifth birthday in the movie, while many of their older sisters look to be in their late teens or early twenties (with the exception of Hadley and Isla, who look closer to their age). As a result, the older girls frequently look out for the triplets, with Genevieve especially being a protective Cool Big Sis towards Lacey. The older sisters also tell the triplets stories about their late mother, whom they're too young to properly remember.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: When Rowena usurps the throne from their ill father, the sisters all work together to infiltrate the castle and overthrow the duchess. Blair dismounts a guard and uses the horse to fetch a doctor for the king, Delia and Edeline use their croquet skills to knock out the guards at the front doors, and Hadley and Isla distract the remaining guards by running around on their stilts. Meanwhile, Fallon, Courtney, and Ashlyn sneak in through the unguarded door and apprehend Desmond so Genevieve and Derek can confront Rowena, and the triplets take advantage of the confusion to bring the healing water to Randolph before he fully succumbs to the poison.
  • Shared Family Quirks: The one thing all the sisters have in common is that they all love ballet dancing.
  • Shipper on Deck: All of the girls can tell that Genevieve has a crush on Derek, and they love to tease her about it.
Edeline: Genevieve, is it the shoes you like?
Fallon: Or the cobbler who made them?
    (the sisters all giggle)
  • Sibling Team: The sisters all work together as a team when confronting Rowena after she assumes control of the kingdom.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Blair, Delia, Edeline, Hadley, Isla, Janessa, and Kathleen are the tomboys to Ashlyn, Courtney, Fallon, Genevieve, and Lacey's girly girl.
  • You Have to Believe Me!: When Rowena dismisses their claims about the magical world and try to convince her it's real.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_blair_12dp.png

Voiced by: Jennifer Copping

  • Adaptation Name Change: She is named "Brianna" in the Nintendo DS game.
  • All Girls Like Ponies: She absolutely loves horses and spends most of her time out riding.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Blair loves riding, so she and Courtney dismount one of Rowena's guards, and she takes the horse to fetch the doctor for their father as fast as they can.
  • Cool Big Sis: Lacey looks up to her for her equestrian skills.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Black hair, fair skin, and is quite a looker.
  • Red Is Heroic: She wears a red gown.
  • Tomboy Princess: She loves horseback riding and often comes home with mud on her dress, much to Rowena's disgust.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: When one of Janessa's bugs escapes from its container, Blair fearfully asks if the missing bug is a scorpion, and yelps in fear when Janessa lifts up the creature. It turns out to be a caterpillar, and Blair calms down.

    Courtney
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/courtney_read_books.jpg
"If we leave now, we can never come back."

The third oldest daughter of King Randolph and Queen Isabella. Courtney is an avid bookworm and a lover of literature.

  • Bookworm: She constantly has her nose in a book, and she often bumps into things because of that. She does this so often that Ashlyn and Blair often have to tap her on the shoulder to bring her back to reality so she doesn't hurt herself.
  • Brainy Brunette: She's very intelligent and is often the first one to point out small details that her sisters might miss.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Even before the sisters return to the palace to overthrow Rowena, it's Courtney who reminds everyone that, according to their mother's tale, they could only go to the dancing pavilion three times before the world vanished.
  • Cool Big Sis: Lacey admires her for her intelligence and literacy.
  • True Blue Femininity: She wears a royal blue gown.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's scared of snakes, and cowers on her bed when she thinks one of Janessa's escaped pet bugs is a snake. When it turns out to be a caterpillar, she relaxes.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_delia.png

  • Big Sister Instinct: She's quick to defend her younger sisters from Rowena, and comforts Genevieve when the duchess locks the princesses in their room.
  • Chekhov's Skill: In their introduction, Delia and Edeline are playing croquet through the throne room, and Delia accidentally knocks off Randolph's crown by using "too much wrist" in the shot. In the finale they weaponize this to knock out two of Rowena's guards so the others can sneak in.
  • Cool Big Sis: Her younger sisters look up to her and Edeline for their sportsmanship.
  • Those Two Guys: With Edeline. The two are constantly seen together playing sports and dancing.

"Playing through! Just be a second, Papa!"
Voiced by: Chiara Zanni

Edeline is the fifth oldest child of King Randolph and Queen Isabella. Much like her twin sister Delia, she's very sporty and loves to play croquet.

  • Always Identical Twins: Edeline and Delia are identical twins and both sisters have shared love of croquet. However their hair colors, dress colors, and even a few aspects of their personalities are noticeably different; Delia is a bit more fiery and outspoken, and Edeline has a bit more of a snarky personality.
  • Chekhov's Skill: As detailed above, Edeline and Delia's love for croquet comes in handy during the climactic fight against Rowena where they utilize their mallets to knock out two of Rowena's guards.
  • Cool Big Sis: The triplets (particularly Lacey) look up to her and Delia for their athletic skills.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She can be pretty sassy at times, especially when dealing with Rowena.
Edeline: You mean "the Duchess of Don't"? Don't do this, don't do that! Don't, don't, don't!
  • Those Two Guys: With Delia. When you see one, you'll often see the other alongside her.
  • Tomboy Princess: Like her twin sister, she's a sports enthusiast and loves croquet.
  • Twin Banter: She frequently engages in this with Delia.
  • Vibrant Orange: A sporty, energetic princess in an orange dress.

"Papa! Look what I found!"
Voiced by: Britt McKillip

The first triplet daughter of King Randolph and Queen Isabella. She's very energetic and loves to catch bugs.

  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: She's the brunette to Kathleen's redhead and Lacey's blonde.
  • Bug Catching: Her favorite hobby. She keeps a tank full of various bugs in her room and has individual names for all of them. Her introduction involves her running into the audience hall to show her father a new bug she found, and at one point, she accidentally scares Ashlyn, Blair, and Courtney with one of her bugs when he escapes from his container.
  • Tomboy Princess: She's a nature enthusiast and a bug collector, and spends most of her time running around with her sisters.
  • True Blue Femininity: She wears a sky blue dress.

  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: She's the redhead to Janessa's brunette and Lacey's blonde.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's the only child in her family with red hair and is incredibly energetic.
  • Tomboy Princess: She loves to run around with her sisters, especially her fellow triplets.
  • Vibrant Orange: She's a hyperactive, cheerful young princess in a tangerine dress.

    Lacey
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lacey.jpg
"But it is the truth!"
Voiced by: Chantal Strand

The youngest triplet, and the youngest of all King Randolph and Queen Isabella's children.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: She's the youngest triplet and therefore the youngest child out of all her sisters.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves some of the healing water from the magical world, which in turn revives Randolph.
  • Big Sister Worship: She idolizes her older sister Genevieve, who looks out for her in the absence of their mother.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: She's the blonde to Janessa's brunette and Kathleen's redhead.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She has a habit of tripping over things all the time, much to her despair.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She wears a lilac dress.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Her biggest hangup about being the youngest of her sisters is that she doesn't feel like she can do anything right, a notion Genevieve is quick to dismiss.
  • Tell Me About My Mother: Since Lacey was only a baby when Queen Isabella passed away, she doesn't have many memories of her. So she often asks Genevieve to tell her stories about their mother.

    King Randolph
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_randolph.png
"One day, you'll be responsible for running the kingdom. Duchess Rowena will prepare you."
Voiced by: Christopher Gaze

The father of the twelve princesses. King Randolph is a kind and thoughtful man who dotes on his daughters constantly, although he's often overwhelmed by their antics.

  • Big Good: The leader of the realm.
  • Disney Death: He comes close to death due to Rowena poisoning his tea. He's only brought back from the brink when Lacey gives him the healing water from the magical land.
  • Good Is Dumb: Doesn’t seem to pick up on the timing of his falling deathly ill right around when Rowena arrives.
  • The Good King: He's a very wise and just ruler.
  • Parents as People: He loves his daughters unconditionally, calling them "the best part of [his] life". However he's often overwhelmed by their energy and believes that they need a maternal presence to guide them in the absence of their mother. Unfortunately, his choice for said maternal guardian is his treacherous cousin Rowena.
  • Poor Judge of Character: He trusts Rowena to educate his daughters on how to be proper princesses, yet is completely oblivious to her attempts on his life.

    Queen Isabella
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/queen_isabella_12_dancing_princesses.png
"Sometimes I don't understand them. If only you were here..." -Randolph

King Randolph's late wife, and the mother of the twelve princesses.

  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: According to Genevieve, she was a very kind and loving mother to her daughters before she passed away, and always encouraged their unique talents and skills.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She wears a purple gown in her portrait.
  • The High Queen: She was very regal and wise in her life, and like her daughters, she had a passion for dancing.
  • The Lost Lenore: To her husband Randolph. While she's been dead for several years by the time the story begins, Randolph still mourns her.
  • Missing Mom: She's long dead by the time the story takes place, and her family misses her dearly.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Much like her daughters, Isabella had a deep love for ballet dancing. She also appears to have started the trend of the princesses wearing their favorite flowers on their gowns, as Isabella has what appears to be a white lily on the neckline of her gown.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Isabella and her eldest daughter Ashlyn look remarkably similar. They both wear purple gowns, both have similar facial features, and even have similarly styled hair.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: She was beloved by the whole kingdom when she was alive, especially by her family.

Antagonists

    Duchess Rowena
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duchess_rowena.png
"A princess does not talk back! No dancing until you learn how to act like royalty."
Voiced by: Catherine O'Hara

King Randolph's sly and manipulative cousin. Initially recruited to teach the princesses how to behave like royals, it soon becomes clear that her goals extend much farther than just teaching the girls to flutter fans.

  • Accidental Misnaming: Due to forcing the princesses to all wear the same clothes, she constantly mixes them up.
  • And I Must Scream: Cursed to dance forever with Desmond.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: She's a duchess and a purely rotten and selfish person.
  • Big Bad: The villainess of the story.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She initially presents herself as a strict but well-meaning governess, but very quickly reveals her true colors, banning the sisters from taking part in their favorite pass times and placing unreasonable restrictions on their daily lives. She goes as far as to forbid the girls from celebrating the triplets' birthday because they haven't learned to behave like royalty, and locks the girls in their room when she catches them in what she believes is a lie.
  • Cassandra Truth: She doesn't believe the princesses' claims about the magical world, instead believing that the girls are sneaking out to dance with princes. It's not until Brutus finds the gateway to the magical world that Rowena realizes the princesses were telling the truth.
  • Chased Off into the Sunset: A version of this where he and Rowena dance off into the moonlight against their will.
  • Evil Aunt: Cousin technically but fits this trope to a tee.
  • Evil Brit: She has a British accent and is the main antagonist of the movie.
  • Female Misogynist: Rowena has shades of this, though it's not as overt as some examples given it's a Barbie movie. She demands that the princesses keep their emotions bottled up, be quiet and obedient, and punishes them for standing up for themselves or having their own opinions. She forces them to partake in tasks she deems appropriate (mostly looking pretty, being graceful and doing housework), while disapproving of things like sports, education, painting and lively music. At one point, she dismisses the princesses and all girls in general as being "so emotional". She also immediately assumes the princesses have been out dancing with men when she discovers they've been sneaking out to go dancing, because of course they wouldn't be going out for any other reason. And that's without mentioning she's plotting to usurp their throne.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: She briefly gains control of the kingdom when Randolph falls into a coma due to her poisoning him. Her first act is to order her new guards to imprison the princesses for disobeying her.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Uses the magic flower to wish that Genevieve would never stop dancing, but Genevieve uses her fan to turn the magic back on her and Desmond, causing them to dance nonstop instead.
  • Impoverished Patrician: She an aristocrat whose carriage is falling apart, doesn't have enough money to pay her debts, and needs to steal something to trade for the poison she intends to kill her cousin with.
  • Involuntary Dance: She tries to inflict this on Genevieve during the climax, but Genevieve is able to use her fan to reflect the spell back at her.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Plays Randolph like a fiddle.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Relies on Desmond, her [[Mooks]], and enchanting two suits of armor to do the fighting for her.
  • Robbing the Dead: She steals a goblet from her cousin's late wife.
  • Short-Lived Leadership: Was sentenced to rule the kingdom in Randolph's place until he recovers; since she is poisoning him to death, it's clear she wants to seize the throne for good.
  • True Blue Femininity: She wears a blue ballgown.
  • The Usurper: She briefly gains control of the kingdom after poisoning Randolph, completely bypassing the princesses in the succession, most notably Ashlyn, the eldest child and heir. As soon as he's rendered comatose, she immediately start putting up portraits of herself and organizing a new guard even while Randolph lays dying in his bed.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Duchess Rowena is a master manipulator and comes the closest to winning out of nearly every Barbie villain. As she slowly poisons King Randolph to death, she plays the part of a loving relative to gain his trust and cut him off from his twelve daughters, until he willingly makes her his successor on his deathbed. In turn, she manipulates the 12 princesses, undermining their self-esteem and capabilities to help their father, to the point that they decide to leave the kingdom for their mother's secret pavilion, believing Rowena's lie that they are the cause of their father's failing health. Before they can realize their mistake, she imprisons them in their place of refuge by having Desmond destroy the stones and steals some of its magic. Upon their escape, she uses the stolen magic to place a Fate Worse than Death curse on Princess Genevieve, compelling her to dance herself to death, which Genevieve only escapes by weaponizing the paper fan Rowena yelled at the girls about earlier.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She has silvery white hair and is a cold-hearted, selfish schemer out to steal her cousin's throne.

    Desmond
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/desmond1_87.jpg
"You're a lovely dancer. You know, I should've brought my other shoes."
Voiced by: Gary Chalk

Rowena's second in command and loyal servant.

  • And I Must Scream: Cursed to dance forever with Rowena.
  • Chased Off into the Sunset: A version of this where he and Rowena dance off into the moonlight against their will.
  • The Dragon: To Rowena
  • Dumb Muscle: He lets his boss do the thinking for him.
  • Evil Brit: Speaks with a distinct cockney accent.
  • Involuntary Dance: He gets hit by residual effects of the spells Rowena intended to cast on Genevieve, forcing him and the duchess to dance off into the night.
  • Subordinate Excuse: It's implied that he follows Rowena's orders because he has feelings for her.
  • Yes-Man: He follows Rowena's every order without question and constantly kisses up to her.

Animal Sidekicks

"I come from a long line of ferocious tigers, from the deepest jungles of India! Roaaar!"
The royal family's playful kitten who is convinced that she is a ferocious Bengal tiger.

  • I Just Want to Be Badass: She claims to be a descendant of Indian tigers.
  • Named After Someone Famous: She gets her name from the famous choreographer Twyla Tharp.

"What are you waiting for? An invitation?"
Derek's snarky pet parrot. The shoemaker tries to brush the bird's words off as mindless parroting, but he talks sense more often than Derek would like to admit.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He quips constantly about the absurd moments of fairy-tale logic, and Derek's general timidity.
News flash! She walked in her own room!
  • Just a Stupid Accent: Over a decade later, the Barbie community is still debating what accent Felix's birdie voice is supposed to sound like. It sounds like some monstrous fusion of a Jamaican and Irish performed by Apu from The Simpsons.
  • Named After Someone Famous: He gets his name from Felix Mendelssohn, the famous composer whose music is included in the score of this movie.
  • Shipper on Deck: He regularly tries to get Derek out of his comfort zone and admit his feelings for Genevieve.
  • Stealth Pun: He's a bird who acts as Derek's wingman with Genevieve.
  • Talking Animal: Unlike Twyla and Brutus, he speaks complete English when around the humans and they understand him perfectly.

    Brutus

I'd say you're about as ferocious as a flea. Like this one!
Rowena's bullying pet monkey, and her eyes and ears with the princesses.
  • All There in the Manual: According to the novelization, Rowena procured Brutus from a New World trader.
  • Maniac Monkeys: He's the Big Bad's pet monkey who causes nothing but trouble for the main characters, and he often laughs maniacally while causing mischief.
  • Talking Animal: But only when the humans aren't around.
  • Troll: His greatest joy in this life is tormenting Twyla. She finally triumphs over him in the climax.
