The titular character. An extremely short and quiet high schooler.
  • Action Girl: When she plays the zombie rail shooter in the arcade she shows deadly accuracy.
  • Adaptational Badass: A good portion of Raido's wacky assumptions about her seem to paint her in this light. For example, coming to school roughed up and Raido coming to the conclusion that she single handedly beat up a gang of delinquents.
  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Does this to Raido after Oshiro calls him scary.
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: She fails to tell Raido her feelings, so she out of the blue kisses him before running off crying. Later it is revealed Raido already confessed to her by that point and she was worried she messed things up.
  • Balloon Belly: Happens to her whenever she eats a lot of food. Tends to go away within minutes.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The start of her friendship and later relationship with Raido.
  • Big Eater: She has a very big appetite, often unable to function without a lot of food. It's also noted by Satou that Aharen has an absurdly fast metabolism, turning from stuffed-fat to normal in mere moments.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: When attempting to confess to Raido.
  • Character Development: While still quiet, she does seem to be able to communicate with others better as the series goes on.
  • Cuddle Bug: She loves hugging Raido.
  • Dressed Like a Dominatrix: Futaba pictures her like this when assuming Rena was trying to steal her crush from her.
  • Emotionless Girl: How she comes off at first. Internally (and once she becomes close to someone) she's fairly expressive.
  • Girls with Moustaches: Aharen drawn with a mustache shows up quite a few times in Raido's imagination. Outside of his imagination, she wears a fake mustache at her birthday party.
  • Hidden Depths: Reina is a master of manual crafts with the potential of being an excellent artist. She's so absurdly good at it that it's a Running Gag.
  • Instant Expert: Half the things she tries she ends up beating Raido in, even if she has never done it before.
  • Luminescent Blush: Becomes a very common trait of hers whenever Raido calls her cute or someone brings up anything related to her relationship with Raido.
  • Minor Living Alone: Technically she lives with her parents, but they are hardly home due to work. As such the household is almost always just her and her two younger siblings.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: Due to looking exactly the same as she did in high school, Reina ends up looking younger than her own daughter even by the time the latter's old enough to get married, and which doesn't change even when she becomes a grandmother.
  • Nice Girl: Reina is a very generous and considerate girl, once you get past her trouble with speaking.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: She physically leans into Raido so he can hear her voice. Amongst other moments, like sticking her bento box in his face to get him to eat it.
  • Not So Stoic: While she keeps her resting dull expression most of the time, she does smile, cry and becomes flustered from time to time.
  • Older Than They Look: She's at high school age, but doesn't even reach Raido's shoulders. To put it into perspective, her grade-school brother looks like her twin when wearing one of her uniforms, and her middle-school sister looks like she's the older one. Even her own daughter ends up looking older than her and she doesn't look any different by the time she's a grandmother to a young child.
  • The Quiet One: She rarely speaks, and even when she does she's so quiet that a mic can't even pick up her voice.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's generally uncomfortable with speaking in a volume that's audible to others or communicating in general for that matter.
  • Supreme Chef: She can make delicious meals from whatever ingredients given to her.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Meatballs, though she feeds them to others just about as much as she eats them herself.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Ends up like this a couple of times. Episode 3 gives her major bedhead (with her hair going straight up) while episode 2 had her walk into class beat up with messy clothes looking like she got in a fight.

    Matsuboshi Raido

Matsuboshi Raido

Voiced by: Takuma Terashima (Japanese); Ben Balmaceda (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raid_4.png

The male lead, and a first year with a perpetually neutral expression yet an active imagination. Having had trouble making friends growing up, he makes a new leap for himself by befriending Reina Aharen.

  • Absurd Phobia: He seems to not do well with animals. For example in one chapter he goes to a cat cafe with Aharen and believes it is some kind of torture place full of vicious creatures. He also flinches at the presence of Aharen's dog Nui, seeing it as a ferocious beast.
  • Briefs Boasting: Wears a red speedo during the beach chapter. Humorously, it's the sole thing in color the entire chapter.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Played for laughs. One of Raido's random assumptions was that Aharen is his sister. It is worth noting he had this assumption after he was already dating Aharen.
  • Butt-Monkey: Loses to Aharen the majority of times they compete against each other in something. This does get toned down a bit once they start dating.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He has a tendency to come to the wildest conclusions possible from whatever observations he makes. However, there are a couple of occasions where this running gag is subverted, as noted under Dumbass Has a Point.
  • The Confidant: Gladly becomes this for Aharen.
  • The Dreaded: How Oshiro sees him. She eventually stops fearing him.
  • Dull Surprise: The most emotion we see on his face is usually his eyes widening a bit, while his stern eyebrows never change.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: While the vast majority of his crazy assumptions are completely wrong, there are select occasions where he ends up being 100% correct (ironically after doubting himself along the way).
    • Chapter 67 has him and Aharen going on what is very obviously a date, but he assumed she's there for the Beyblade Tournament going on that day. Turns out, that is exactly why she is there and she didn't even realize they were essentially on a date.
    • Chapter 112 shows Aharen doing a lot of things involving clothes and music. His "crazy" assumption is she wants to be an idol. The chapter ends with her and her siblings doing an idol performance.
  • Endearingly Dorky: He may have a Frozen Face, but his vocal expressions and imaginative tendencies can't hide how much of a dork he is.
  • Friendless Background: He could never make friends in middle school due to his unfriendly look.
  • Frozen Face: He's not necessarily the traditional stoic. He never changes his expression because he seems to be physically unable to. His attempt to smile and appear friendly yields no outward change to his expression whatsoever.
  • Gentle Giant: While not huge himself, compared to Aharen he is basically a giant.
  • Graceful Loser: His drive to compete with Aharen is balanced with his nonchalant response to her multiple wins.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite mediocre grades, his weird imagination seems to demonstrate that he is extremely knowledgeable on a wide array of topics, ranging from the world record in limbo to the explosion in the population of wild boars in Japan. It's implied this ends up contributing to him becoming a successful author as an adult.
    • Later chapters in the manga show that, despite his weird imagination, it turns out he is very good when it comes to serious situations and (shockingly) romance in general. Seeing him give legit really good advise to a sad Aharen makes you shocked that the guy talking normally assumes the most crazy scenario possible.
  • I Will Wait for You: Tells this to Aharen when he finds out she wants to go to a different university.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Becomes a parody of one in Chapter 124 after drinking (what he believes is) an alcoholic beverage in the morning. He reverts back to his old self immediately after finding out the drink didn't have any alcohol.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Aharen. She isn't hopeless without him, but she much prefers being with him.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Chapter 100 shows that he met Aharen when they were children, but Aharen had to move the very next day.
  • Mr. Imagination: He has weird first impressions and ideas that crop up on the spot whenever he sees something strange.
  • Nice Guy: He may have some weird antics but he is a very kind person.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: A minor example. His small pupils and completely stoic face clashes heavily with every other character.
    • This is toned down a bit in the anime, giving him more detailed eyes while preserving his stern look.
  • Older Than They Look: He still looks the same as he did in high school by the time he becomes a grandfather, though it's ultimately downplayed unlike with Reina in that he finally starts looking his age by the time his granddaughter is older.
  • Replacement Goldfish: What Ōshiro thought Raido was usurping from her, as he became Reina's "carer", a role she used to fill.
  • Shattered Sanity: Happens to him after Eru asks him what the meaning of life is in chapter 122. Considering how much he overthinks little things it is no shocker a statement that big would break him.
  • The Stoic: Subverted. He is extremely emotive in every way except for his facial expressions.

Classmates

    Mitsuki Ōshiro

Mitsuki Oshiro

Voiced by: Mao Ichimichi (Japanese); Kristen McGuire (English)

Aharen's shy but vigilant childhood friend. A towering girl with absurd dexterity and strength.

  • Childhood Friend: She's been friends with Reina since at least elementary school, appointing herself Reina's guardian.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: A rather unique example early on. She was clingy to Aharen, but her shyness basically made her stalk her and Raido rather than physically clinging to her.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Played with and later downplayed. She's shown to be very apprehensive and envious of Raido's relationship with Reina, but witnessing how much said relationship benefits and fills Reina with joy, she learns to accept Raido as a friend.
  • Hidden Depths: It's not apparent from looking at her, but she's surprisingly good at styling hair.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Taller than both Raido and his teacher.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: She's tremendously dexterous and the most physically capable character in the story.
  • Stalker without a Crush: She follows Reina without her notice to make sure she's safe from harm. As a result she spends her debut spying on Raido (even in the bathroom...) to sort out any ill intentions he may have for Reina.
  • Yandere: Downplayed. Honestly, it did occur to her to act like one; but then she realized that Aharen wouldn't like it.

    Ishikawa

Ishikawa

Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara (Japanese), Kevin Thelwell (English)

A classmate of Aharen and Raido. Often seen hanging with Satou.

  • Chick Magnet: A somewhat minor example. He gets some attention from Oshiro, Satou and Tamanaha.
  • Childhood Friends: His relationship with Satou (though she seems to want to be more than that).
  • Nice Guy: Is often the one to spark social interactions that are more often than not to benefit his friends rather than himself.
  • No Full Name Given: His full name has yet to be revealed.

    Hanako Satou

Hanako Satou

Voiced by: Tomori Kusunoki (Japanese), Veronica Laux (English)

Another classmate of Aharen and Raido. Often seen hanging with Ishikawa.

  • Childhood Friend Romance: Heavily hinted that she has romantic interest in Ishikawa.
  • Did Not Get the Boy: Chapter 158 has her finally confessing to Ishikawa, only to get rejected.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Her first spotlight chapter has her constantly repeating how normal of a girl she is. The chapter goes out of its way to show how abnormal everyone around her is.
  • Weirdness Magnet: Doesn't matter how normal she tells herself she is, everyone around her (students and teachers) are very much not normal.

    Riku Tamanaha

Riku Tamanaha

A new transfer student who went to the same elementary school as Aharen and Oshiro. She wants a happy high school life, but often overthinks situations into oblivion.

  • The Atoner: In a lighthearted way. She desperately wants to be friends with Aharen, but feels she messed things up in the past by being clingy. In reality Aharen likes her and wants to be her friend.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Which complement her cat smile.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The anime gives her one in Episode 1 during Aharen's flashback. In the manga she doesn't appear until Chapter 71.
  • Gyaru Girl: Adopted this look by high school, having long light hair with a side loop, tanned skin, an untucked shirt buttoned in the middle, and a loose-hanging tie.
  • Mirror Character: Like Aharen, she doesn't seem to understand social boundaries all that well. While Aharen dealt with this by keeping to herself, Tamanaha ends up overthinking every little situation she does.
  • Nice Girl: She's very sweet and eager.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: Often has one on her left kneecap.
  • Prone to Tears: Be it happiness or sadness, girl has the waterworks on about half of the time.
  • Tender Tears: She's very prone to crying, usually because she works herself up to the cry by overthinking.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to the bigger, more athletic Oshiro.

Teachers

    Ms. Tobaru

Ms. Tobaru

Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (Japanese), Katelyn Barr (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aharen1.jpg

Aharen and Raido's teacher in classical literature. She has a thing for classical romance and poignancy.

  • Nosebleed: To the point it's one of her defining character traits. Whenever she sees even a hint of poignancy, her nose absolutely gushes, and sufficient poignancy can get her vomiting blood as well.
  • Sensei-chan: Despite being portrayed as a strict teacher, she is pretty casual and friendly with the lead students. For example she spars with Oshiro at the gym once. Aharen also invited both her and Miyahira to her tea party, treating them just like any other friend. Some later chapters show that she can interact with Raido and Aharen on their own just fine, she just goes mad when they're together.
  • Shipper on Deck: Parodied example. She's an avid Raido x Aharen shipper, to the point that any potentially romantic interaction between them can trigger massive blood spurts from her.

    Ms. Miyahira

Ms. Miyahira

Voiced by: Yurie Kozakai (Japanese), Tia Ballard (English)

Another teacher of Aharen and Raido, and Ms. Tobaru's close friend.

  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: She takes care of Ms. Tobaru whenever she faints from her recurrent and copious nosebleeds. Given how much it happens, she may as well be the reason Ms. Tobaru is healthy enough to teach, but just barely.
  • Drives Like Crazy: In the anime's version of the camping trip, she punctuates her response to not being able to join the students on their trip by performing a drift on the way to the site. With the students still in the van with her.

Relatives and other characters

    Ren Aharen

Ren Aharen

Voiced by: Misaki Kuno (Japanese), Brittney Karbowski (English)

Reina's little brother.

  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Ren is a boy but looks like a slightly smaller version of his eldest sister Reina. In the anime, he is voiced by Misaki Kuno (who is known for voicing young girls), making his gender reveal even more surprising.
  • Precocious Crush: Chapter 150 has him develop one towards Tamanaha after hanging with her when everyone else was busy.
  • Shipper on Deck: Excitedly asks Raido if he is going out with Reina.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Enjoys dressing up in Reina's outfits.

    Eru Aharen

Eru Aharen

Voiced by: Rina Hidaka (Japanese), Natalie Rose (English)

Reina and Ren's middle sibling.

  • Big Little Sister: Much taller and bustier than her elder sister Reina.
  • Face of a Thug: She means well, but her permanent scowl can be rather off-putting to other people.
  • Mistaken for Dying: When she mentions that she doesn’t have much time left to take care of Reina, Raido thinks Eru is terminally ill. She clarifies that it won’t be long until Reina goes to college.
  • Supreme Chef: Her cooking skills are comparable to her sister, best demonstrated by filleting a tuna like a professional.
  • Tsundere: Her kindness beneath her perpetually angry-looking face and abrasive attitude makes her an example of this.

    Raido's little sister

Raido's little sister

Voiced by: Rika Nagae (Japanese)

Raido's younger sister, who's also a classmate/friend of Eru's.

  • Always Someone Better: How she feels Eru is compared to herself (to the point where she assumed a love letter for her was intended for Eru).
  • Ambiguously Bi: Her freak out reaction to receiving a love letter was due to her being bad with romance, not because it was given to her by a girl. She also doesn't explicitly turn her down either, rather she just wants to get to know her first.
  • Chick Magnet: In chapter 144 she has both Satsuki (the girl who gave her the love letter) and Eru fighting over her. The former openly likes her and calls her her girlfriend, while the latter admits she might have feelings for her, she just doesn't know what the feelings mean. The whole thing leaves her an awkward embarrassed mess.
  • Idol Singer: Performs in an idol group with some school friends in Chapter 112 for a local event. Got very flustered when she noticed her brother was there.
  • Love Letter: Chapter 134 revolves around her receiving one from a classmate and her not knowing how to react to it. Eventually, she decides to go with getting to know each other first. The ending of the chapter reveals that the person who gave her the letter is a girl.
  • No Full Name Given: She has yet to be given a name. Even the official site refers to her as "Raido Imouto"
  • Shared Family Quirks: Chapter 134 shows that she seems to (at least somewhat) share her brother's rather odd imagination.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: While nowhere near as extreme as the Aharen family, she does share her brother's stern eyebrows. Unlike him however, she is very emotive.

    Futaba

Futaba

Voiced by: Maria Sashide (Japanese)

An elementary school girl with a very obvious crush on her friend Atsushi and is often jealous of Aharen.

  • Abomination Accusation Attack: Anytime Raido tries talking to her she threatens to call the cops or pull her safety buzzer. She stops doing this after Raido reunited her with her father after she got lost at the festival.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: She has a hard time directly thanking people, even though she really wants to. When Aharen and Raido helped her cook she leaves bragging about her skills, only to berate herself later for not just thanking them. She does directly thank Raido at the festival (albeit quietly).
  • Closet Geek: Chapter 153 shows that she hides from her friends to play certain arcade games cause she doesn't want them to know she is into such games. She drops this behavior after meeting Miyahira talks her out of it.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: While she is only a few years younger than them, her relationship with Aharen, Raido and Eru would count as this.
  • Tsundere: Towards basically everyone to some extent:
    • She is very given to berate Atsushi, whom she has a crush on.
    • She tends to think the worst of Aharen at first because she thinks that she'll steal Atsushi from her, but she starts to recognize that what Atsushi harbors for Aharen is a great deal of respect.
    • She threatens Raido with her safety buzzer every time they encounter each other, but begins seeing his helpfulness and friendship the longer the story goes.
    • However, she manages to get along well with Eru, possibly due to their similar personalities.
