  • Designated Hero: Many feel Goku was Flanderized into this by the time the series got to the Cell Saga due to his tendency to either make the fight fair for his world-destroying enemies or deliberately holding back on them so that his sons would have a chance at defeating them. While Goku always enjoyed a good fight, he didn't risk the safety of the world for it.

So there's definitely a decent chance of Designated Hero fitting for Goku, except the writeup doesn't make any sense because he never does that "by the time the series got to the Cell Saga." The only time he's actually truly had the upper hand against an enemy was (depending on the format you're watching/reading) after going Super Saiyan against Freiza, and he was holding back for the sake of Cruel Mercy. Plus, everyone else was off the planet. Even through the Cell Saga, it only really applies to the actual fight with Perfect Cell.

Like I said, there might be a good case for Goku here, but the writeup is problematic.

I can agree with that. Do you have an improvement to propose?

Eh, I'll give it a shot. I don't even really agree with it, but it certainly is something a lot of the audience reacts to so it's valid.

  • Designated Hero: Goku's Idiot Hero and Blood Knight tendencies cause him to, over the course of the series, commit quite a few acts that are pretty questionable and coming from someone else who isn't a Kindhearted Simpleton would be frankly jerkass behavior. These tendencies can include ignoring his family and friends for long stretches of time, to the extent that his closest friends had no idea Gohan existed until the start of Z and spending years in space by choice training; repeatedly give unrepentant murderers arguably undeserved second chances (though he's built up quite a bodycount himself, so maybe that's actually fair); and sending Gohan to fight Perfect Cell with an Unspoken Plan Guarantee and actually helping Cell recover in the process. He never does this maliciously but fans certainly see it as unheroic behavior.

Uh actually Goku eventually grows out of actually killing people after OG dragon ball. In dragon ball z, goku only kills like 2 bad guys (Kid Buu and Yakon = both of whom arent actually sapient, so Im not sure thats a good example) while in super, he kills freeza (Who returns to life anyway later so also not a good example) and avoided trying to kill any of freeza's minions during Resurrection F. So im not sure the quite the body count for himself part is accurate.

Oh, I was unaware that if you kill less for a while, it stops counting. Sorry, couldn't help that.

But seriously, he's killed like... a lot of people. That is a thing. The writeup doesn't say "and he has a penchant for killing" or anything, it just mentions the fact he's killed quite a few people. And saying "he only killed two people" in DBZ is technically true, but frankly dishonest considering he sure as hell has tried to kill more (Freiza surviving is a huge fluke and retcon, and he would be considered legally culpable for Raditz's death even if he didn't fire the beam).

"...at the end of the Frieza saga, they use the Dragon Balls to wish back everyone killed by Frieza and his men. Since Vegeta was in Frieza's command at the time, Nappa should have been revived, too, but wasn't."

Technically Nappa and Vegeta didn't invade Earth on Freeza's orders. In fact they shirked a previous job when they decided to come to Earth, so their allegiance to Freeza was pretty shaky by that point.

Were all the people Nappa killed brought back?

If I recall correctly, the Z Fighters killed by him were brought back by Porunga's wish. According to this page, the wish was "bring back the people killed by Freiza's men on Namek" which seems needlessly specific, but not a plothole.

Mr. Satan being a Creator's Pet: I don't really see it. I don't think he really counts as The Scrappy because a lot of fans find him entertaining (including, according to this page, the entire Japanese fanbase, which would disqualify him). And I can't remember him being genuinely talked up. All the times I remember him being talked up it was a gag... he gets talked up In-Universe, but not to the audience.

Not this again.....

So the Japanese fandom counts as to whether a character is a Scrappy or not? Not to argue, just wondering.

Well, it's the reason Kira "Jesus" Yamato was pulled, and he's otherwise one of the most fitting examples I can possibly think of.

It makes sense, honestly. The point of the Creator's Pet is that the author keeps putting writing about even though the fanbase hates them because the author likes them. If the author's primary demographic (their own country) likes the character, then it changes things pretty considerably, you know?

Okay, I see where you're coming from. While I do think Mr. Satan is a Creator's Pet in the English fandom, I don't think it would be a problem removing him if he's liked in the Japanese fandom. I only wrote him as a Creator's Pet because I heard many fans dislike him and complain about how "annoying" he is, he gets praise from fans all the time In-Universe (aka shilling), and Toriyama admits that he likes Mr. Satan.

Yeah, and I get your points too. But I think it just doesn't fit if he's liked in his country of origin, tempting though it may be.

... I really hate Kira Yamato. So hard.

You can remove him if you like. It's great we had this discussion first. And, I don't watch Gundam Seed...sorry =(. I'm not a fan of Mr. Satan because of how he keeps taking credit for saving the world when actually the Z-Fighters did all the hard work. It's grating, but I don't hate Mr. Satan either.

I do see where you're coming from. I don't mind it because for all the credit-hogging he does, he still gets played off as a joke. I'm surprised he's not listed under Base Breaker, though. I feel like that needs to be added.

I think he IS a Creator's Pet because he is given such special treatment that no one on Dragon Ball Z ever was. His enemies spare him, the Z Warriors ignore him despite the fact that is calling them all liars and cheaters, people worship him for doing things he can't do, and then we have Goku choosing to save his life over his own family. And Toriyama admits that he likes Mr. Satan, so there you. He is given unbelievable favoritism and the creator likes him. There's the link.

Except he's not The Scrappy in his country of origin. So he can't be.
