Would Ted Faro's actions in Horizon Zero Dawn fit any of the categories listed on the Ludd Was Right page?
Hide / Show RepliesPersonally I think he would be more Evil Luddite considering that his actions are not shown in a positive light
In some ways, Ludd WAS right. For example: some restaurants now have remove ordering computers built into their computers. Thus, waiters are obsolete(or at least will be when they add in robotic delivery machines). Yes, this creates new jobs for the people who fix such machines, but what about the teenagers who have no idea how this stuff works? What about the adults who couldn't afford college? And the college students who need money to pay for their expensives? They're out of luck. Advanced technology may create new jobs for the EDUCATED, but the young and uneducated are out of luck.
Hide / Show RepliesEconomic policy discussion goes here for the record.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWhere did the Headscratchers page for this trope go?
Hide / Show RepliesHeadscratchers for tropes are (slowly) being removed as per this forum thread.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going."Alternate title: Ludd was Aight."
...How is this a pun? Am I missing something? A pun involves a double meaning of some kind.
Real Life
- there's an island in the pacific that used to use 500-pound wheel-shaped rocks for currency. when the british found this place they used modern tools to make them en masse, the modern stones are worth much less than the old ones, partially because part of a stones value was its "pedigree", or what it was traded for in the past. weird, amirite?
Can someone who knows what this person is talking about clean this up?
Chabal 2: Butlerian Jihad? Would someone care to explain this title?
Hide / Show RepliesIn the well-known Dune series of science fiction books, the Butlerian Jihad was an ancient war between humans and intelligent machines, which the machines lost. The consequence was that artificial intelligence was outlawed, to the point that all work that would be done by a computer (or heck, a pocket calculator) even today in Real Life, from complex mathematics onward, is instead done by highly trained human beings.
It doesn't make perfect sense as an alt title, but the basis is there: The Butlerian Jihad showed that if you use technology for too much and give it too much power in everyday life, it will turn all dangerous and evil and you'll have to fight against it; and the solution is a Ludd-like approach in which certain technology is outlawed and human abilities are used instead.

Removed the following example. It doesn't list the title of the work, and asking on YKTS failed to bring any replies.
