Find a Trope:

A girl who gets sent away to college because she became pregnant with her brothers child, and he gets sent to the army. pretty sure her dad makes her have an abortion. Just remember she lives with a roommate, I think she's a dancer or something at college, or they both are. Her brother ends up finding her, and she has PTSD, I remember one scene where she goes to sleep with a bunch of books on top of her.
openHorrific hidden explanation
When a character asks another how did they manage to turn an ordinary building into some Bizarrchitecture Bigger on the Inside maze, the second guy whispers something in his ear that's apparently horrific. Then the second one goes "if it's any consolation" and whispers something else, and the first one goes "oh... I guess that's... Better?"
What exactly tropes go here?
openPixel Face Videogame
An animation technique in which the characters' facial expressions are rendered on their models as a texture that has their own animations. Most often, it is used to give characters rather unique expressions, or demonstrate a lot of character by showing some unique mouth movements.
It's largely fallen into disuse in the modern era - thanks to more advanced hardware allowing characters' mouths to be rendered, as well as people often finding them out of place or just plain creepy. However some games might still use them, primarily if they are stylized or lower budget.
openPredictable shot
This scene from The Flash (2014) where Barry and Iris are in two different dimensions (Iris is in the "Mirror Dimension") and both talking to a mirror and not knowing if the other can hear them or not, and the final shot is a split screen of both of them looking at the other side. This is an example of when you can pretty much tell what the final shot of a scene is going to be. I know it's a subjective experience being able to guess something, but usually if a shot is predictable enough then most people could guess it. Also if you have any other examples I'd greatly appreciate it because this is the only specific scene I can think of at the moment, though I know there are others (a lot of action movie groups shots are like this).
Edited by Troper48openMy Totally Real Romantic Partner
A character keeps talking about having a girlfriend or boyfriend and all the things that they do. The other characters usually don't believe them. It's usually left ambiguous whether or not the partner is real, but all evidence points to them being anything but.
openIntentional mess making
A character intentionally messes up or destroys something with the purpose of having another character clean it up, or for the purpose of getting them into trouble.
open"I softened him up for ya"
A character takes someone else's place in a fight and eventually wins. Because the loser expended energy fighting the replaced fighter first, someone credits the victory to them instead of the one who finished the battle.
The Kingdom Hearts video currently up on The Battle Didnt Count is an example of this trope, not the one it's currently filed under.
openHad The Makings Of Going Pro
Example: The main character, is an sucessful novelist, is told by someone who used to play football with him in high school that he was an modest player and could've gone pro if he had put in the work. Even the main character agreed.
openLiked them better when they were evil
Possibly an Audience Reaction trope. Do we have a trope for when fans/viewers of a series voice that they prefer when a character was previously evil as opposed to their Heel–Face Turn? I feel like this is a common enough sentiment that it would be a trope but I'm not finding anything.
openMen Protect and Women are Protected
Is there a character tropes or general tropes to do with the belief that men are supposed to protect women? I've skimmed some tropes but they all seem to be peripherally linked to this.
openSitcom expat relation Live Action TV
Usually found in sitcoms: someone (especially if the show is based around a family) has a relation that's emigrated, and phone or web calls to them will be played for laughs. Sometimes the character is unseen, sometimes they make cameo appearances during the call - usually accompanied by a background of stereotypical features of whatever country they're supposed to be in. Can also be used to bring a character back as a guest if the actor quits or is busy with other work
open0% Approval Rating for Non-Rulers
Do we have a trope that applies the "0% Approval Rating" for non-rulers? It would apply to a character that is widely despised by the rest of the cast and would classify as 0% Approval Rating if they were leaders. It wouldn't be "The Friend Nobody Likes" because they are no one's friend in the first place and their nominal allies (if they have any) have strictly professional relationships with each other and aren't friends. It also wouldn't be "The Dreaded" because they aren't feared, just hated. The source of said hatred can come from numerous sources like how the individual is an unpleasant Jerkass or a Complete Monster. The only thing that matters is that the individual is widely hated in-universe.
openMarketing By Dissociation
An ad campaign (sometimes claiming their product sucks) says that at least they're better than X, Y, or Z. An example would be the Sega Genesis' "Genesis does what Nintendon't" campaign or the Hastily Made Cleveland Tourism Video's claim that "We're not Detroit!"
openMarriage con
A person promises marriage or actually marries someone to take all their money and leave the mark taking all their debt.
openover powered but has terminal illness Anime
a character is very powerful and could defeat the main villain if they're on the good guy's side and if they're not they could easily defeat the protagonist if it weren't for that pesky terminal illness they have. they will be shown spitting/coughing up blood from time to time and in their final fight they will be shown about to win only for them to die of their illness. itachi from naruto, whitebeard from one piece and to an extant Goku's heart disease prior to the arrival of the androids.
opencreatures drop items that cure the standard status effect items they cause Videogame
So when you've fighting creatures that cause paralysis more often than not they drop the item that cures paralysis. If they cause poison then they drop antidotes and so forth
A work with a story arc is released bit by bit. Fans thus get to speculate how the plot would be resolved, and manage to actually guess correctly, so the writer decides to scrap it and write a different ending.
