Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread

Well, Robin Hood is public domain.
Yep, if being derived from folklore was all it took to make something fanfiction, we'd have to move a lot of Shakespeare over.
TV Tropes's No. 1 bread themed lesbian. she/her, fae/faer^^ Doesn't make it not derivative of an original property. If I wrote an It's a Wonderful Life fanfic, would that be classified as Literature/? note .
But at the same time, I can't imagine you'd consider, say, a novel based on the Greek Gods or any other mythology to be fanfiction. What's the cutoff for something being considered fanfiction or not?
Edited by Larkmarn Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.As far as this wiki is concerned, the line between fanfic and original fic is that fanfic infringes on an existing copyright. That's it.
Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing. To clarify, it's an existing copyright in the fic author's home country at the time of release?
(In weird cases like American-written Sherlock Holmes, we might have to defer to the author's preference, as the last Holmes story doesn't hit the American PD until 2023.)
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.It notes that it's a web series. Has the author self-published it, published it through an online distributor, or released it via fanfiction sites? ... I honestly can't tell from the page if it's even a written work.
(Ninja!) Geez, it is written, just badly explained so I had to look again to understand this meant word count— "short story, usually in the 13, 000 range"
Edited by ImmiThrax Covered in Star Wars Cleanup, Deadpool, and Web Video sand. I'm not coarse and rough, but I get everywhere.I've updated the page to reflect that it's an electronically published series of novelettes and novellas (mix of lengths from 12k to 22k).
Since Robin Hood is public domain, it isn't considered fanfiction. "Web Original" on this site refers to where the work originated in format— originally (or only) released on the internet. It doesn't refer to derivative or not.
Covered in Star Wars Cleanup, Deadpool, and Web Video sand. I'm not coarse and rough, but I get everywhere.I see. So it's clear cut here, but I wouldn't be surprised if some other works fall in a gray area.
Question: Does Sherwood Forest really belongs in the Literature/ namespace, and the Web Original Fiction index, considering that it is basically a Robin Hood fanfiction?
In what way reusing some ancient myth makes it different to all the other fanfictions out there? I would see it belonging to the Fanfic/ namespace.
