Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread

Phoenix Avalon and queenhippolytas (who added the initial entry) have been suspended for edit warring.
Edited by MacronNotes Macron's notesTo save you all a click, it is about Depp/Mikkelsen.
I could've guessed that without a click. FWIW I agree that the entry probably belongs, although maybe with the caveat that at least some of the animus towards Depp is based on real-life issues and not his performance as such.
^ Really? The reactions I've seen (at least on the trailers) were that people generally agree that Mikkelsen makes a better Grindelwald than Depp, but some protested the change because they feel that the studio firing and replacing Depp mid-production is unfair to the latter. I've never heard anyone say that Depp's performance as Grindelwald is better than Mikkelsen's.
Edited by AdeptI dunno about better - mainly I'm thinking of people saying after the second film that while they oppose Depp's casting on moral grounds, he did have a better performance than was expected, especially since the film in general was pretty bad.
That might've been after the initial allegations, and before Depp's own side of the story came out. I know my sister at least, despite being a HP fan, is boycotting the new movie because she's pissed they fired him, so it's not a completely made up claim.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessDon't wanna push it or anything but would it be safe to re-add the entry? I've been to some places with opinions of the film and so far it seems Mikkelsen's performance is seen as the better one (controversies aside)
"Bingo! If two species hate each other, they will wipe each other out on their own."I think so. I wonder if we should add a note for other tropers not to remove it.
On a side note, Omega 3421 also edited an entry on Just Here for Godzilla to remove a statement that "many critics take the view that [Mikkelsen's] performance as Grindelwald is superior to Johnny Depp's", and while that statement might not be relevant to JHFG, this makes me think that the previous More Popular Replacement removals are somewhat agenda-driven.
(From what I gather, the Depp v. Heard issue has had the internet overwhelmingly pro-Depp, and it might be that some people are getting overly defensive over possible any perceived criticism against the actor)
The entry in question:
- More Popular Replacement: While professional critics and general audiences had very different opinions on the film, the one thing they both agreed on is that Mikkelsen's take on Grindelwald is better than Depp's. Most believe he was able to bring the way the character as portrayed in the books and first movie by Farrell in disguise in a way Depp never did. The odd character design and stoicism are gone and we finally get to see the narcissistic, manipulative, and charming yet lost and overly emotional man that was described in Deathly Hallows and glimpsed in the first movie when he lets the disguise slip. For the first time, it became clear why Dumbledore fell in love with him and as well as that the relationship truly was mutual.
I'd be inclined to add back as it was removed without edit reason and seems to avoid the Depp controversy as reasons. Any reason not to (too divisive/soon to say)?
Edited by Ferot_Dreadnaught^ Looks good. That's a common enough opinion that there's no reason to leave the entry off the page.
Edited by AdeptDuplicate.
Edited by AdeptI am fine with adding it back.
Macron's notesAdded it back citing this ATT with a commented out note and Discussion page entry saying not to re-remove without discussion.
Accidental double post.
Edited by Ferot_DreadnaughtI'd agree it's valid, even those unhappy with the reasoning behind Depp's removal seem to still think his take was better.

On the YMMV page for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, the entry under More Popular Replacement was deleted by Phoenix Avalon without explanation, then re-added by Vengeful Bale with the edit reason saying "this is an opinion held by both critics and audiences I've seen." The entry was then deleted again by Omega 3421, and was then re-added by queenhippolytas, before being once again deleted by Phoenix Avalon.
